Whether your household ispartial to dogs, cats, fish orreptiles, deciding if the familyis ready to welcome a pet intothe mix is a big undertakingand one that requires a lot offorethought.

Too often getting a familypet is more of an impulse deci-sion than one carefully con-sidered. Other times petscome into the family by way ofgifts. There have been manytimes well-meaning individu-als gift a cat or bunny andthink they’ve stumbled on theperfect present. But if the family isn’t ready for the pet, the animal could end up being neglected or givenaway.

Here are some ways to tell if your family is ready to take on the added responsibility of a pet.• Do you have the room for a pet? Some animals require more living space than others (a Great Dane versus a gerbil). Consider if your home is adequate for the pet you’re considering.• Are pets allowed where you live? If you rent or live in a community with homeowner regulations, find out if you are able to have a pet first. Sometimes pets are restricted based on breed or variety, such ascats being allowed, but no dogs.• Have you set the ground rules regarding who will be caring for the animal? If the children are expect-ed to care for the pet and then you as parents are forced to take over, it could lead to animosity.

• Have you considered the lifespan of animals you desire. Many dogs and cats can liveanywhere from 10 to 20 years. Some birds live for 50+ years.Think about whether you’reready for that time commit-ment and who will care forthe pet after the childrenhave left the nest.• Let’s face it, pets can bemessy. Feathers, fur, food, poop —they’re all part andparcel of owning a pet. Areyou ready for the extra clean-up required?• Many people overlook finan-cial obligations with pets. Isyour family financially stableenough to handle anotherexpense? Vet care and foodfor pets can total several hun-dred dollars each year.

The way to prevent overpopu-lation in shelters is to carefullyconsider getting a pet andthen being a responsible petowner.
