Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota is known for pushing the developing process and thepotential of analogue image-making to the extreme, thereby introducing imperfections and visualnoise in the photos he creates. He often re-photographs prints up to ten times, injecting layerupon layer of distortion and, in the process, emphasising the mediums inability to represent pastevents accurately or truthfully. His experimentation with delay, reverb and echo in this sense isinspired by certain strains of electronic music, playing with the way one perceives time andaltering it in a visual way. This series of haunting, distorted and otherworldly images epitomiseshis approach.

    Takashi Homma - Mikako Ichikawa PortraitHeibonsha Ltd. 2012 ISBN 9784582231212 Acqn 23476Hb 15x21cm 60pp 48col ills 16.95

For this small-format book, photographer Takashi Homma collaborated with Japanese model andactress Mikako Ichikawa to produce a series of portraits. The images express a narrativelanguage, depicting her elusive individual character. At times, she is a self-assured woman of

singular beauty. More often, she comes across as a precocious, occasionally awkward girl. Herexpressions are at once rebellious and vulnerable, her poses both unconsidered and fully self-aware. The series of portraits, photographed as if following her everyday life, engages theviewers curiosity, evoking a sense of intrigue, a certain fascination with this mysterious femaleprotagonist.

The Lives of the Unholy is a visual archaeology of the city of Warsaw, an attempt at lookingclosely at the phenomenon of the destruction of monuments in Poland in times of politicaltransformation. Today the fact that Warsaw was rebuilt after the war as a promise of a socialutopia is practically invisible. Its post-war roots have become hieroglyphs. This book is an attemptat a visual reading of the citys hidden grammar, of the mute language it speaks.

    Ken Kitano - Our Face: AsiaSeigensha Art Publishing 2013 ISBN 9784861523946 Acqn 23475Hb 22x30cm 164pp 137ills 60

Ken Kitanos work often focuses on time and existence, shunning acceptance of the notion thatthe globalised world hinges upon just one or a few centres. Deeply moving and profound withregard to the homogenous implications of identity, photographer Ken Kitanos Our Face projectinvolves the creation of meta-portraits following a beautifully simple concept. He redefines themeaning of globalisation as an accumulation of individuals and localities by presenting faces ofpeople from various positions and places, making portraits of different individuals from the samesocial group and transforming these into a representative, hybridised image by layering them ontop of one another.

Photographer Sandy Kims work invokes historical references, specifically Nan Goldin and CindyShermans early self-portraiture, with a mix of classical American street photography and a verycandid approach to the youth of San Francisco and New York City. In her underwear and topless,Kim places herself at the centre of various public spaces for this series, published as a large

foldout poster. According to Kim, We are always on display. Our lives are curated across anever-increasing number of media and social media platforms I put my life on display because Iwant to. But the exhibitionism of the work on display here is not meant to fill some perversevoyeuristic desire.

Donigan Cummings The Stageis one of the most challenging photo books published in the lastcentury. Rather than merely documenting his subjects, Cumming collaborated with them, carefully orchestrating their appearance and posture in each photograph, emphasizing their mosteccentric qualities to a degree that has earned him comparisons with Diane Arbus. The Stagethus constitutes a portrayal of the elderly, the odd, the sick and the possibly demented. Books onBooksNo. 19 offers a complete facsimile of this extremely rare, remarkable and little-knownCanadian photo book. It includes an essay by prominent cultural journalist Robert Enright.
