locations of significance to her family. Natural Historiestakes us on a meandering journeythrough the forests and streams of Bosworths past in the Chagrin River Valley, as she retracesher youthful walks to reengage the sense of wonder at the landscape her father first instilled inher. These lush black-and-white photographs reveal a place Bosworth knows well: a place inwhich to dig up arrowheads, pluck clusters of blackberries, catch fireflies and savor the texturesof nature. Featuring the youngest as well as the oldest members of Bosworths family, thesetouching images explore the joy of youth and the wistfulness of aging, memory and the passageof time.

    Janet Russek - The Tenuous StemRadius Books 2013 ISBN 9781934435700 Acqn 22576Hb 23x26cm 176pp 110ills 40

In 1993, Janet Russek began a series of still lifes of ripe squashes, peaches and pears whoserounded forms echoed the plenitude of pregnancy. Using only natural light, she then started tophotograph vegetables and roots whose tendrils, reaching for the sun, expressed all of lifesstriving and aspiration, and finally, the maturing plant, evoking the inevitable downward spiral into

decay. In subsequent years, Russek has expanded the project to include pregnant womenphotographed at close range so that bellies and breasts become almost abstract. Her hauntingportraits of dolls explore the darker, more psychologically complex side of childhood andparenting, while the Memoryseries includes photos of significant personal objects that harken tothe past, and take this volume full circle. The Tenuous Stemalso includes an essay, written by artscholar and critic MaLin Wilson-Powell, addressing Russeks creative process.

    Janelle Lynch BarcelonaRadius Books 2013 ISBN 9781934435687 Acqn 22581Hb 21x32cm 114pp 50ills 39col 40

Scouring the fallow landscape around the Llobregat river and the Rub stream near Barcelonawith her 8 x 10 camera, Janelle Lynch (born 1969) searches for evidence and omens of natureslife cycles. Her photographs of anthropomorphized trees, walls of litter-strewn vegetation, rocksand disintegrating leaves, all taken during a four-year stay in Barcelona between 2007 and 2011,are informed by three figures whose texts are excerpted in this volume: Roland Barthes,

particularly his discussion of mourning in Camera Lucida; Charles Burchfield, whose pantheisticpainterly animations of landscape have much inspired Lynch; and Wendell Berry, whose essayon approaching nature with respect and humility helped to further hone her process. Barcelonaisalso conceived as a homage to Lynchs grandmother, who died in 2008, and to the victims of adevastating flood in the region that occurred in 1962.

    Henry Jacobson - Postcards HomeDaylight 2013 ISBN 9780988983106 Acqn 22582Hb 18x28cm 96pp 64col ills 29.50

This monograph is the result of three years that photographer Henry Jacobson spent living on theroad, shooting film around the world. This nomadic phase allowed for only limited access to thoseJacobson held dear, and the varied array of subject matter found in Postcards Homeisconsequently a record of a period of personal upheaval; of the endings and beginnings of veryimportant relationships; of illnesses and deaths and births. All of the works in this book weretaken with an iPhone, and most were immediately sent to someone he cared about, or wereshared within his broader social network. Such synergy of photography and communication was

facilitated by mobile technology, a development which is transforming societys understanding ofthe medium of photography from a frozen moment to a visual interaction between individuals, making this collection important both from a personal and historical perspective.

The images are quite diverse black and white or colour, interiors or landscapes, captured with flash or abstract and unfocused and together evoke the separation of two lovers, along with the powerful emotions this entails. Bleak, snowy scenes speak of longing and despair, while warm light and colours remind one of ardent desire and palpable memories. Rimaldas Vikraitis is best known for his artistic documentary photographs of rural life in hisnative Lithuania. In them, the habitual use of alcohol and the prevalent grime and poverty in thevillages is depicted humorously, albeit with darker undertones. Through the social backdrop of hisintriguing and wonderfully surreal images, Vikraitis narrates the decline of local farms andtraditional village life since the fall of the Soviet Union. His unflinching gaze embraces voyeurism, nakedness and drunken abandonment, and employs masks, saws, kitchenware, bicycles andanimals in chronicling a world where people have nothing except their bodies, with no hope ofimprovement.

About two decades ago, Hendrik Kerstens decided to fully and exclusively devote himself tophotography. Paula, his daughter, quickly became his favourite subject. Kerstens photographedher almost obsessively, recording her every day, as if trying to capture every moment of life foreternity. His portraits, remarkably following the Dutch art historical tradition, show her strength, but also her vulnerability. The styling, framing and lighting reveal his fascination with the 17th-

century Dutch masters, and the astute observer will immediately recognise the manner ofVermeer skilfully translated in graceful, delicate plays of light. In all, 60 portraits of Paula arepublished in this volume.

Juliane Eirich knew Japan already from previous visits, when she returned in the summer of 2011in order to work here. But this time things were much different. A few months earlier theearthquake had destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The enthusiasm and curiosity forthe foreign country mingled with a subliminal feeling of fear and threat. With mixed emotions thephotographer took residence in a beautiful old country house in the subtropical south of Japan.By bike she explored the Itoshima region and collected new impressions, by day and by night, inthe countryside and in the cities, in sultry heat, pouring rain and storm.
