History: Kings Creek Station was established in 1982 by Ian and Lyn Conway. This was originally vacant crown land with no infrastructure - no water, no electricity, no communications, no roads, no buildings. Originally the vision was to run the Station as a cattle/camel property. Since then tourism has taken precedence although Kings Creek Station still runs cattle and exports camels. Kings Creek covers an area of 1800 sq kilometres of which 110 sq K’s is Freehold, the remainder being Leasehold. Ian Conway is the grandson of William Liddle, who, in 1907, was the first permanent pastoralist in the Kings Canyon region. In 1929 Liddle took up a pastoral lease known as Angas Downs Station. Liddle’s first wife was an Arunta woman from Alice Springs. Bill and Mary had four children, the eldest being Hilda, Ian’s mother. Ian’s father, Mortimer, was also born to an Arunta Woman and a white pastoralist. Mortimer attended the first school in Alice Springs in 1914. He then went on to work for Syd Kidman for 20 odd years as a boss drover.Lyn Conway was born in Adelaide and met Ian in Alice Springs. When they first started Kings Creek Station, Lyn was more or less thrown into the deep end as there was no infrastructure. Everyday chores were very difficult especially with 2 young children. Ian Conway is a self-made man who grew up in Central Australia during the 1950s. A one-time ward of the state after his mother died, his early years were spent in bush camps outside Alice Springs. Against the odds, Ian Conway finished school and carved out a career running a big cattle station near Kings Canyon. But material success wasn’t enough, and when he saw poverty and deprivation on his own doorstep, he was determined to do something about it.

A brief account of Ian’s story. “This is a magnificent country, it’s the most beautiful scenery in Central Australia. This place is in my blood. There is absolutely no doubt about that. I love this country very much. Tourists come here and view Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock. They don’t see what is happening in the back blocks. They don’t see Ukaka for instance. Behind this curtain of beauty live traditional owners of this region who find it very difficult to live day by day. They have no future unless somebody helps them. A long time ago I made a promise to an old Aboriginal elder. I wasn’t able to keep that promise and that promise has stayed with me ever since. Kings Creek Station is about 300 kilometres as the bird flies from Alice Springs. We have something like 300,000 visitors a year coming through here. People that are just travelling through. Lyn turned up here on the 1st of January 1981, it was New Year’s Day and I remember that very clearly because somebody gave me a cheap bottle of wine and I had a very, very bad hangover on the 1st of January 1981 and I’ll never forget it. But Lyn didn’t come to this building. We only had a piece of tarpaulin between the trees behind us and that was our first place of residence. I had no idea what we were going to do with this piece of land. I was just interested in coming out here at that time. There was wild camels everywhere and at that time camels were a fad in Australia and as I’d done a fair bit of camel catching, not very experienced at that time and I thought well, this is the way to go. But as time went on we developed it into a business where we were selling camels to people all over the World. Seventy kilometres to our east is Ukaka which is an Aboriginal homeland. Ukaka is a little community which consists of about 60 people, sometimes more, sometimes less. It’s got about 20 children living there. We’ve been to Ukaka where the children have been starving and I mean starving. They’ve been malnourished - we’ve even found kids on the side of

road waiting for tourists to go by so that they can actually stop them and tell them that they’re hungry and please give us some food. And this is happening today, not 50 years ago. The education on Ukaka like most homelands is really nothing. The kids go to school for a number of years and they come out of the schools not even being able to spell their own names. My background is a mixture of Indigenous and European and I spent most of my life in and around Alice Springs as a small child. We’re actually at the old Telegraph Station which was the original Alice Springs. On this side of the river lived my ancestors from time beginning on my mother’s side and on my father’s side. My great grandfather on my father’s side was a white man and my grandfather on my mother’s side was a white man as well. I didn’t really know my mother. She was a half caste lady, as they were called in those days. Today they’re called an Aboriginal person. My extended dream I guess is to try and help the adults as well as the children. And when I say adults I mean kids from the age of 15, 16 years old to 40 years old. What we are doing is we are going to be mustering mainly camels off Tempe Downs Station which is traditionally owned by the people who live at Ukaka. This is the first time that these guys have been involved in a proper muster as such. The place is alive with feral animals. And these fellows are worried about their country. They want to get all those feral animals off their country so that they can start it from scratch and be able to have a sustainable cattle industry on Tempe Downs. And one of them said to me, “My dream is in five years we’ll be the best Aboriginal-owned cattle station in Australia.”This a small extract of Ian’s story. He is a man who cares deeply for his people and is trying to get the government to do something about the poverty and derivation. SERGEANT’SSESSION

* PP Ian Mence: Was seen by the sergeant in Brighton strolling with Peter Reith who he seemed to be mentoring with the budget in mind. He had a large bank

money bag in his hand - if it was the savings from the budget - $1 - if not $2;

* Marcus Bastiaan: Organised a function for PP Ian Mence with lots of important guests and Ian fell asleep in a corner;* Barry Hickman: Sergeant referred Barry to Pres Pat and Sec

Bill as to how Presidents and future Presidents should dress at meetings. Not in jeans Barry - “Another generation” quipped Barry. The sergeant fined him anyway;

* All Members who have not brought a guest to Rotary this year were fined $1;

* Gerhard Sommer: PP Arthur Hubbard was playing golf last Thursday and Gerhard’s phone rang. Wobbly knees Arthur missed the putt. Bill Jeans to put in;

* Bruce Crossley: Off to Alice Springs to support Melbourne FC last weekend and then doing a fishing trip in the Tiwi Islands - obviously recruiting for Melbourne;

* All Melbourne supporters: They have all had a year of reduced pain;

* George Jerzyk: Has had a pacemaker put in to slow him down;* Michael Rundle: Bought a pair of trousers from a reputable

sponsor of the Club only to find that his money has burnt a hole in it as it went straight through the money pocket. Sarg encouraged him to by his suits at Club sponsor Raoul’s;

* Max Martin: Thought the President said Rob Noodie was the speaker next week and sent the Bulletin out to 32 people. Should have been Moodie. Bulletin was recalled;

* PP Paul Nicholson: Went to Queenstown NZ to play a game of golf and it started to snow. He couldn’t find the ball;

* Graeme Wallace: Was overheard bragging about his two weeks holiday on the Gold Coast;

* Tony Rouse: Flew back specially from Bali last Thursday so he could be at the meeting;

* Damien Hellard: When up in Northern Territory he ran into Ian Conway and sat down with him and talked him into speaking at our Club. Sergeant apologised for Damien’s harrassment but was happy to see Ian at the meeting.

PP Brett Parkin with Exchange Student Vivian Yu ran the raffle last week.

The prize winners of a bottle of wine were:

1. PP Des Thomas

2. Sven Erik-Bredenberg

3. Guest of Damien Hellard

4. PP Alan Pinkus

There was something slightly ‘Fawlty’ at the Brighton Lunch on Friday 30 May........ but it wasn’t the running of the Event which was done extremely well by Chairman Geoff Bentley and his hard working team who produced a wonderful, magical lunch. No, it was actually ‘Basil Fawlty’ with sidekick ‘Manuel’ who really stole the show popping up throughout the afternoon with impromptu skits even addressing the Bulletin Editor as ‘Major’ after a character in the TV series. Very funny stuff. ‘Marilyn’ was also there to remind us that ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’. There were over 300 guests who enjoyed great food supplied by the International of Brighton, Katie Bentley as MC extraordinaire, legendary Aussie singer James Reyne backed by Tracy Kingman singing a couple of his big hits and very entertaining interviews with Kevin Sheedy asking the big questions of the 3 celebrity speakers - Susan Alberti, Brian Ward and Beverley Knight. We also heard from Sonya Stephens and Cathy Freeman about the Cathy Freeman Foundation’s work with the indigenous kids of Palm Island and we were shown an inspiring video. The live auction looked to be a great success as auctioneer Peter Kakos from Marshall White plied his craft. Finally we heard from Michael Long and the ‘Sheedyettes’ prior to the Long Walk for reconciliation in the weekend’s round of AFL footy. Cathy and friends all joined in on the final number. Another successful Rotary Club of Brighton fundraising event. Well done again Geoff and Darren Donnellan for the great powerpoint presentation.
