Focuses the responsibility of learning on the learner. Involves students in doing and thinking about the things they are doing, beyond listening and watching.

Definition of Active Learning

Learning is not a spectator sport.

Students do not learn by sitting in class listening to teachers. They must talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past experiences, apply it to their daily lives.

(Chickering and Gamson, 1987)

Have you experienced learning as a spectator sport? Was it effective?

Example:

Think about what you know about active learning strategies.

Turn to a partner and share

What can you share with the class?

Page 32: Photo by Mark Brannan - Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License N00Created with Haiku Deck

Example:

Take out a sheet of paper and list as many characteristics of a strong club as you can.

Page 33: Photo by Mark Brannan - Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License N00Created with Haiku Deck

Example:

Take a few minutes to share notes with a partner:

•Summarize the most important information

•Identify (and clarify, if possible) anything that is confusing

Example:

Take a minute to come up with one question.

Then, see if you can stump your partner!
