Dear International Student!Deciding whether to spend a semester or more abroad might be one of the most important decisions of Your life. A thousand questions must be rushing through Your head: will I manage in a foreign country…? Is it easy to make new friends…? What about language issues and cultural differences…? Is it going to be an adventure…? What if…?

Going abroad is not just a journey to another country. It is also a journey to Yourself, which may lead You to discover who You really are and what are Your goals in life. As they say – look from afar and You will be able to see things more clearly. Our motto at TTK University of Applied Sciences is: “Practice is the Best Teacher – Usus Est Magister Optimus!” So, in order to get rid of all the “ifs”, go for it!

As You will soon discover, being an exchange student is as much about giving and sharing as it is about receiving. Being an ambassador of Your country is both a privilege and a responsibility.

The staff and students of TTK welcome You with warm hearts, despite the cold weather you may sometimes experi-ence. I wish You a pleasant and inspiring stay at TTK Uni-versity of Applied Sciences!

Tere tulemast!Welcome!

TTK University of Applied Sciences – Your Reliable Partner in Education and Research TTK University of Applied Sciences is proud of its long history and continuing traditions. The predecessor of TTK, Tallinn Commercial School for Boys, was founded in 1915. TTK has had many different names, but the most well-known of them amongst Estonians is probably Tallinn Technical School for Building and Mechanics (Tallinna Ehitus- ja Mehaanikatehnikum – TEMT), which started providing engineering studies in the fields of construction and mechanics in 1940.

In 1992. TEMT started the process of transferring the curricula from the level of vocational education to the level of applied higher education. In 1999, the university was named Tallinna Tehnikakõrgkool (TTK).

Research and DevelopmentIn order to co-ordinate the applied research carried out at TTK University of Applied Sciences, the Research and Development Council was established in 2001. The Council has worked out the development plans and action programs for enhancing applied research activities at TTK. The Council is also responsible for publishing the research articles and applied research papers of our lecturers and students in the magazine Proceedings of TTK University of Applied Sciences. Since November 2000, the university has also been publishing a monthly newspaper Young Engineer.

The Council also encourages the scientific activities of students. The students inter-ested in writing scientific papers and participating in academic life may join HEUREKA, a scientific association for students founded in 2002.

For enhancing the cooperation of university and enterprises, the Technology Transfer Centre was established in 2008. TTC functions as link between the university

and companies – private enterprises can order applied research from the university, carried out by its academic staff and students. Through applied research, TTC binds together the needs of companies and university competence. In addition, TTC helps young inventors and the staff of TTK in the process of protecting intellectual property and acquiring patents.

Today, the society needs highly competitive specialists who are able to succeed in a globalizing and con-tinually developing world. Lifelong learning, internationalization, inno-vation and creativity have become inseparable elements of our real-ity. Together with its students, TTK wishes to develop continuously. Since 2013, this goal reflects in our renewed visual identity. The new logo – gateway to opportunity – symbolizes university as a gateway, allowing its students to develop their future in a creative and open way.

Faculty of Architectural and Environmental Engineering

Great things begin from creative thought. Open your eyes and you will see how the space around you is filled with matter.

Number of Students: 284

The faculty offers studies in two fields of specialization: Applied Architecture and Envi-ronmental Engineering. The 4-year undergraduate study process involves acquiring both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Practical trainings, workshops and intern-ships in architects’ offices or companies form an essential part of becoming an applied architect or an environmental engineer.

Applied Architecture Becoming an architect means choosing a creative profession. Developing skills and creativity needed for this profession, students pass a modelling practice, drawing and painting practice and town observation practice. In the 3rd study year, all students go to an internship in an architectural or a planning bureau. The graduates of applied architecture may work as assistant architects in private or state-owned companies; as architects, planning specialists or assistant construction advisers in a local government, or continue their studies in master´s level.

Environmental Engineering Studying environmental engineering means learning how to act together with our environ-ment in a responsible and smart way. The studies of environmental engineering comprise of technical, practical and theoretical knowledge. Learning the smart handling of climate change, biological diversity, natural resources and waste is a key to sustainable future.

First I did not know what to expect from this country. Maybe I also was a little scared. But Estonia’s beautiful nature, Tallinn’s pretty Old Town and the nice lectureres at the university convinced me that it was a good idea to come. If you are thinking about going to Estonia just grab your winter coat and boots, also bring a towel for sauna, and go!
