Principal’s Report
Welcome back to fourth term. Fourth term at any school is a very busy and vibrant time and Coomealla High School is certainly no exception. A great deal of planning is currently underway to take the school into 2012 and students are working hard to complete their studies for this year. I will run through some of the most important features of this term.
For students we have two major exams. Year 12, of course, have already started the Higher School Certificate. These exams began on Monday 17th October with Business Studies and will conclude on Friday 11th November with Design and Technology. I have been very impressed with the way our Year 12 students have been preparing themselves for these exams and I wish them luck.
Our Year 10 of 2011 can claim that they were the last Year 10 to undertake the School Certificate. The School Certificate takes place on the 7th and 8th of November. Most students continue their schooling beyond Year 10 and this milestone is not as important as it once was. It is still an important examination for our students and measures their performance against students from across New South Wales. As I write our Year 10’s are completing their trial School Certificate.
Year 11 students begin their Higher School Certificate studies at the start of Term 4. It is important that they realise the work that they are doing now will be in their HSC exams in 2012. Good work practices now will lay the cornerstone for success next year.
As Year 12 leave we prepare for our next Year 7 group. Transition activities are underway. Our transition team is visiting the primary schools this week. They are meeting the students and talking with their teachers. The information gathered at these meetings will allow us to prepare the best possible transition into high school for these students.
From an administrative and organisational standpoint we are doing a great deal of planning for next year. The school Management Plan, which gives direction to the school for 2012 is well underway. It will be completed by mid November and is then approved by the School Education Director in Broken Hill. The Management Plan Team has been working on this throughout last term.
We have begun our budgeting process for next year. The school has limited financial resources and the expenditure of funds must be carefully managed to provide the best educational outcomes for our students.
Later in the term we will have the opportunity to celebrate the successes of our students with our award assemblies. These start with the Year 12 Leavers Dinner on the 21st November and continue with our Presentation Assembly on 6th December and the Year 10 Assembly on the 8th of December. Our school magazine is nearing completion and will highlight our achievements this year.
2011 has been a busy year and continues to be one. As you can see fourth term is a hectic term as we move, very quickly, towards the end of the year, Christmas and the holidays. For our students it is a time to keep working and establish the study patterns that will see them continue to succeed. Enjoy the term, the weather is warming up, the days are longer and 2012 promises to be another exciting year.

Fishpond Revived After receiving a grant from Lower Murray Darling Catchment Management Authority from their Special Environment Fund it was decided that some of it should be spent on the resurrection of the science pond as it is such a valuable resource.
Our science pond has not been operational for the last five or so years because of water retention difficulties owing to the drought and a crack in the bottom. Mr Colley helped rescue the fish which were put in an aquarium and the plants which were put into crates and barrels for replanting.
A liner was purchased with the funding and carpet for underlay was donated by Mrs Reid and Matthew Cameron. On the last day of Term 3 the “Myth Busters” Year 9/10 enrichment class and 8J Science class volunteered their muscles. It was hard work but a lot of fun getting the liner (8M X 7M) smooth and then shovelling a cubic metre of large river pebbles around the edge. Thanks to both classes and Mr Dreyer and Mr Raso for their help.
The Lilies, Water Irises and other water plants are in and ground covers are round the edge. The 40 gold fish are in their new/old home after being in an aquarium for a long time.

Footy Colours Day 2011
Thursday the 15th of September the school celebrated ‘Footy Colours Day’.
Everyone came dressed in their favourite footy, soccer, rugby tops, scarves or socks etc. A gold coin donation raised $128 to assist children with cancer. During lunch time we organised a couple of fun activities – ‘Zero In’ where students had to kick a football and knock a soft drink can off a goal pole, The Longest Kick, and Nearest to the Cone.
Winners of the events were: Longest Kick – for boys were Austin Murdoch, Connor Darby and Nick Cottrell, girls who won were Sarah Watts, Caitlin Hancock and Nat Wescombe. Nearest to the Cone - not many students participated but we did have a few winners – Mikaela Martin and Cori Gill for the junior girls, Emily Hancock, Nick Cottrell, Corey Henderson and Ashley Watson all won a prize. Zero In was the favourite of the day with many students who tried out but no-one was able to knock the can off the pole.
Two students who managed to hit and knock the pole were Sam Clyne and Bailey Tyers they received a can of Zero for their efforts.
Many thanks to the coaching class who prepared and created the activities and to the SRC members who helped run the events. Thanks also to those who came along for the fun enjoyed the activities.
Thanks to everyone for supporting this great day.
