In their quest for knowledge and discovery, students and researchers in Africa face challenges trying to access scholarly information in their respective areas: - Where books and articles are available, they are mostly old editions - In most cases, costs involved in purchasing newer editions of books and accessing current research papers from most publishers are beyond the reach of scholars on the African continent - Additionally, students and researchers often do not have the ability to pay for articles with credit cards or other online payment methods

Working to improve the situation, many universities in Africa take advantage of initiatives such as TEEAL (The Essential Electronic Agricultural Library), AGORA (Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture), OARE (Online Access to Research in the Environment), ARDI (Access to Research for Development and Innovation) to have access to journal articles from some publishers.

While these initiatives have significantly improved access to published literature, there is still limited access to peer-reviewed articles. To complement initiatives such as those listed above, the “Building a Science Bridge to Africa and Beyond™” program was initiated.

The Building a Science Bridge to Africa and Beyond™ program aims at improving the access of students and researchers in higher education on the African continent to peer reviewed research articles and books. The program was conceived by Professors Mary Schmidl and George Annor of the University of Minnesota, and is managed by the Honor Society of Food Science and Technology (Phi Tau Sigma).

How it Works The Building a Science Bridge to Africa and Beyond™ program accepts donations of research journals and books, then matches scholarly information with universities or research institutions in Africa.

The program arranges for the books/journals to be picked up from your location and shipped out to students and researchers that will benefit the most.

How You Can Make A Difference To donate books, scientific journals or make monetary donations to the program, please contact Phi Tau Sigma/ Dr. George Annor [email protected] or 612-512-5647.

All donations will be acknowledged and donors sent a copy of impact reports submitted by the receiving organizations.
