Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

Interdisciplinary PhD GrantThe PhD research will be carried out in collaboration withresearch groups of the PhD programme in"ARCHITECTURE, BUILT ENVIRONMENT ANDCONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING".See http://www.dottorato.polimi.it/index.php?id=242&L=1for further information.

In recent years various countries, their populations andcultural heritage have become victims of conflicts ornatural disasters, with a dramatic extent of bothdestructions and of the consequent devastating effects onsome of the most distinguished city monuments andhistoric locations.One of the most important and challenging case is offeredby the city of Aleppo, where numerous internationalUniversities and conservation agencies have entered intoa dialogue over the appropriate approach to urbanconservation and reconstruction, in connection also witheconomic recovery.Following the cessation of hostilities in December 2016,the City of Aleppo has embarked on a process of urbanand socioeconomic reconstruction, recovery, andconservation that will be multi-phased and multi-year incomposition.Today, the return to Syria, and to Aleppo in particular, of

more than 500,000 displaced residents demands urgentactions, in order to facilitate an orderly and socially-inclusive process of reconstruction, as well as mitigateand prevent the risk of inappropriate and irreversiblephysical transformations of the city's distinguishedheritage.The above research activities correspond, in general, tothe main themes which contemporary culture is nowstarting to face about this topic, both in the theoretical andmethodological field (mainly in the European Universitiesand in the USA), often assuming Aleppo as a  meaningfulcase study.This specific research proposal, as mentioned, makesreference to a variety of different branches of knowledgeand expertise forms, widely represented inside thedoctoral programs offered by Politecnico.Specifically, it is submitted by the research groupsoperating in the field of  Urban and Architectural Design /Composition (ABC Dept.) and in the field of Preservationof the Architectural Heritage (DAStU Dept.), consideringboth common study activities started since 2017 about thecity of Aleppo, and general research themes of buildingand urban reconstruction as well.Such activities have been done in cooperation with theAga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC)- Historic CitiesProgramme -, which developed, in the past, workingrelationships with the ABC Department in relation to anumber of historic sites / cities of mutual interest (Lahoreand Multan in Pakistan, and George Town in Penang).

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The complexity of the present condition, as well asAleppo's wealth in terms of both architectural heritage andurban structure - clear proofs of its extraordinary historyand role - call for a complex and reach variety of expertiseforms and inter-disciplinary contributions.These last concern research activities in various fields:the critical reconstruction of wide portions of the ancientcity and  destroyed buildings, rebuilding techniques forboth monuments and buildings in line with the regionalseismic and climatic conditions, new construction plans asrequired by the new city design.

Educational objectives

To reach these objectives, students in the doctoralprogram work closely with one or more faculty membersof PHA and ABC Programmes and experts of otherresearch sectors and from their related fields of study.Members of the field and invited experts will also playimportant roles in a students academic progress and PhDcandidates will be prepared to fill faculty and researcherpositions or secure positions at research institutes andcenters.Upon successful program completion, we expect ingeneral that they will:

Provide guide lines for critic reconstruction and for the

care of the historical buildings and remains;

Be prepared for employment in research/faculty

positions at high-level research institutions,

Engage in and promote evidence-based practices

through the application of rigorous methodology;

Provide leadership in the field by developing an

independent line of ethical and culturally responsive

research;

Contribute to development of the next generation of

scholars.

Job opportunities

PhD candidate involved in this interdisciplinary researchwould be welcomed in the International groups working atthe reconstruction of Aleppo and other, partly destroyed Middle Eastern Cities.Graduates of the PhD programme have often foundemployment in public sector and conservation institutions,as well as in professional practices and in the businessworld, in specific specialized fields.PhD candidates from abroad find job in their nativecountries at University or in Cultural Heritage Institutions.As regards Italy, the relationship with Italian Ministry ofCultural Heritage (Mibact), has been definitely fruitful,especially when we consider that many among the bestPhDs in Preservation of Architectural Heritage have beenhired as officers and executives to the above ministry:recently (February 2018) twelve PhD from this

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

The program of study leading to the doctoral degree isorganized to attain the following objectives:

To enable students to engage in advanced study

and research;

To foster original and scholarly research that

contributes to enhance knowledge in the field of

Preservation of the Built Heritage and Cultural

Landscape;

To enable graduates to integrate their professional

education and experience with the larger problems of

the professions around the field.

 The PhD programme, lasting three years, calls for theacquisition of 180 credits overall:

25 credits (minimum) are divided as follow:

-  15 credits (minimum) offered by PhD courses

organized by the PhD programme in Preservation of the

Architectural Heritage;

-  10 credits offered by the PhD School (transferable

In support of research carried out for their thesis,

studentswill benefit from several laboratories both inside

and outside the University. The activities undertaken

during the second and third year also include

attendance of workshops, seminars, national and

international conferences related to individual research,

with great attention to conferences wherein PhD

candidates present the results, even partial, of their

research theses.Periods of study at foreign university

and research centers are also strongly encouraged.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The academic plan of the PhD programme revolvesaround 3 main research lines:

HERITAGE AND LANDSCAPE PRESERVATION:

CULTURE AND PRACTICE

1.

METHODS AND THEMES OF HISTORICAL

RESEARCH. CONSTRUCTION HISTORY

2.

SCIENCE AND INNOVATION IN DIAGNOSTICS OF

MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES. REHABILITATION

OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS

3.

Educational activities are related to research eitherunderway or at an early stage of development, some ofwhich addresses major monumental structures and someof the most renowned sites of the world.To the aim of theirthesis research, PhD candidates have the opportunity torely on facilities and laboratories, both inside and outsidethe University, the breadth and width of which providesthem with a crucial support to the aim of acquiringcompetence for highly qualified research activities in thedomain of cultural heritage protection. As for the thesisresearch, candidates thus have the opportunity to addressand investigate in-depth the wide- ranging themesconnected to heritage knowledge and preservationbroadly meant, such as advanced methods of
