• The grid is a way of coming up with 4-5 photoshoot ideas and getting you to think about what you want to communicate and how you will do this.
• It should be based on your chosen theme within the Vintage project e.g. collections, memories, urban decay, natural decay, fashion… IT IS VITAL YOU DO NOT DEVIATE FROM YOUR CHOSEN PERSONAL THEME. (If you have forgotten what this think back to your montage)
• Check the assessment page to see how your work will be assessed

ALL will:
Describe your intentions for future photo-shoots explaining subject and visual elements
MOST will:
Identify 4 aspects of your theme that you will try to interpret and explain how you will use subject, visual elements and devices to help you to communicate your intentions
SOME will:
Develop a clear plan of your ideas for future photo-shoots, relate this to related concepts, devices, subject & visual elements in response to looking at artists work

10 minute TASK
• Identify 3-4 key THEMES of your chosen concept that you can explore visually e.g. within the theme of psychological states there may be aspects of :
• Contrast (opposites) ‘jackal and hide’
• The senses – sight, touch, taste
• Hallucinations/ paranoia
• Disorganisation
• Identity issues
• All of these could then be used as key areas to develop a photo shoot.
TO HELP YOU DO THIS:
Look at images you have collected and write words which come into your head
5 minute task
CREATE A GRID WITH THE FOLLOWING TITLES:
1. Along the top row come up
with 3-4 key themes related to your
chosen vintage theme. These will be
ideas for photoshoots
2. Down the left side column write the following in this order,
depending on your group:

URBAN
DECAY
Destruction Beauty in Decay Cohabitation Traces Regeneration
Ideas For this theme I had a
idea to get a broken
down and rusted car as
nature has eventually
destroyed the man made
object
For beauty in decay I
planned to take images
of a room in a urban
building that’s been
abandoned and left to
decay.
I was going to show how
humans & nature live
together in urban living
through human
interaction with nature
e.g. recycling
For traces I am going to
show how a abandoned
building with surrounding
trees and leaves can
leave a trace of urban
living.
For regeneration I'm
going to show how
photography in certain
areas can show
improvement of the area
and the new life of the
city.
Subject Matter Cars, Buildings, Trees,
Windows and Statues
could be used to show
the various things within
living in a urban
environment that can be
destroyed.
Flowers, Buildings,
Architecture, Structures
and Bicycles could be
used to show the beauty
in worn urban objects.
Things like Weeds,
fountains, gardens,
flowers and Trees are
things that are in
cohabitation in Urban
areas that live along side
one another.
Leaves, Trees,
Brickwork, Cars and train
tracks are things that can
be used to find a trace
from objects that were
once there before.
Regeneration in urban
areas are made by
adding/changing
Gardens, Sculptures,
fountains, architectural
buildings and
Visual Elements The visual elements that I
will use for this theme is
tone, contrast, line, form
and texture.
The visual elements for
the theme beauty in
decay will be contrast,
tone, line, colour and
texture.
The visual elements for
this theme will be line,
shape, texture, form and
contrast.
The visual elements for
this theme will be texture,
shape, tone, line and
contrast.
The visual elements for
this theme will be colour,
tone, line, form and
texture.
Devices Devices for this theme
will be focal point,
aperture, structure, filter
and panoramic.
Devices for this theme
will be filter, focus,
structure, focal point and
panoramic, symbolism
Devices for this theme
will be emphasis, focal
point, structure, aperture
and cropping
Devices for this theme
will be lighting, cropping,

Devices for this theme
will be structure, focal

AMBER task example
Society Phobias Media Concealment
Photo-shoot plan
For this photo-shoot I am going to take multiple portrait photo-shoots of various people (all different ages etc.) and place them together to create a portrait image including people from society to show everyone is perfect in their own way
In this photo-shoot I will show the fearthanatophobia being captured by a person through the use of a skull and a cage. The photo-shoot could involve a model grasping a cage with a skull in to show that the person has confronted their fears and beaten them.
In this photo-shoots I want to show how the media judges the individual person in society. To do this I am going to take photo-shoots of models legs which I can edit onto images from a magazine shoot t show that media ‘eats’ imperfect people
This photo-shoot will be showing the masking of flaws by a disguise of pure beauty or prettiness. The model could wear a beautiful mask covering her face or a edited airbrushed human face of perfection.
artists
Visualelements
The visual element shape could be used In this photo-shoot as the different images placed on the photographs will have to be different shapes and sizes to create effect in the final phonograph
The visual element I will consider using for this photo-shoot is dramatic lighting and shadows to create a eerie atmosphere to link to the theme of phobias. Dark lighting also links to phobias as some people are scared of the dark.
Colour will be an important visual element in this photo-shoot as colour in media is used to make an eye catching advertisement therefore I can link this to my work by making my photographs eye-catching through the use of colour
Silhouette lighting and also shadows lighting are good visual elements to use in this photo-shoot as the theme of concealment and hiding of faces will be helped by the darkness of the photographs.
devices Distortion will help to show the differences in people appearance and their uniqueness whereas Metamorphosis can shows that although peoples appearances change heir basic shape is the same.
Dark Lighting could be a good device to use to communicate the dark subject matter of confronting fears (death). Viewpoint can help communicate the feeling of the model.
focus will help to attract the viewers attention to specific important points on a photograph to communicate the theme.
I could use Composition to create an interesting setup that will help communicate the theme of concealment and also draw the audiences attention.Lighting could be used to capture detail in the image or help communicate concealment through hiding and shadows.
Techniques & processes
As this photo-shoot requires close up shots of peoples faces, sharp focus will help keep all the detail needed to create a detailed photograph. Collage photography could also be a important technique to create face from multiple photographs
For this photo-shoot Under exposedlighting could be used to make the photograph darker. Also Out of focuselements of the photograph will help create a focus point within the image.
Panning the camera will give a wider view for a wider photograph. If the subject is large such as the planned photo-shoot of the models arms and legs coming out of the magazine image. Panning may be needed to capture the whole length of the image.
The use of Depth of field could enhance the concealed effect. If the surrounding area was in focus and the model was not then the model will appear to be concealed by the photographs fuzziness.
context People will be the main context in this photoshoot as I will need multiple models to show society.
Capturing fears is what this photoshoot is about as the phobia is going to be overcome.
Influences is the context in which this photoshoot is based as I am trying to show how people are influences by media
People will be the context I am going to use as the photoshoot is biased on their concealment.

GREEN task example
Q: review your key theme grid
1. Have you come up with 4 themes?(4)
2. Have you written an idea for each key theme shoot? (4)
3. Have you explained the subject matter (4), visual
elements (4), devices and concepts (5-6)
4. Have you written in full sentences and in detail
explaining your ideas (7-9)
5. Have you included artists which might influence your
work (7-9)
Now complete any thing which is missing
CHALLENGE TASK
Compare artists work that relate to each of your
themes in the grid. Looking at the following. Find
a way to do this visually and in writing
How they communicate their theme:
a) Use of visual elements, colour, shape, pattern
b) Devices- symbolism
c) Composition - vantage point, framing
d) Subject matter
30 minutesNow you need to identify ways (devices) artists have used to
communicate their theme. Come up with 3 main devices that you
want to explore to communicate your theme. E.g. colour
dominance, CHANGE IN SCALE, JUXTAPOSITION….
NOW COMPLETE A SLIDE ON EACH OF THESE THEMES
AND COLLECT ARTISTS WORK WHICH FITS INTO THIS
THEME. Write a short paragraph and explain how they use the
devices.
