DISCOVER THE

SCHOOL OF PHARMACYDIFFERENCE

For over 100 years, D’Youville has provided students the education and skills needed to pursue their chosen careers. To meet the needs of the community and the interests of students, D’Youville opened its School of Pharmacy in 2010. Four years later, the inaugural class graduated in May of 2014. Additionally, in June of 2014, the D’Youville School of Pharmacy received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

The D’Youville School of Pharmacy is a teaching and learning community of faculty, students and staff dedicated to educating tomorrow’s pharmacy practitioners and advancing the profession. Through our focus on critical inquiry, research, scholarship and service, we ensure that our graduates are qualified to enter practice as generalist practitioners who are prepared to serve their communities and their profession. We believe that tomorrow’s pharmacists must be committed to a lifetime of learning and service to their profession and to their community.

We encourage you to visit our campus and meet with a School of Pharmacy admissions counselor, who will answer any questions you might have and can also arrange for you to meet some of our faculty and tour our laboratories, classrooms, and workspaces. We look forward to welcoming you to our School of Pharmacy student community in the near future.

The D’Youville School of Pharmacy’s four year professional program leads to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD). Over the course of your studies, you will learn to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare practitioners. You will also learn to troubleshoot and solve problems related to drug therapy regimens. Upon graduation, you will be prepared to develop and evaluate programs to improve the health of the communities you serve and you will become a compassionate healthcare provider – an effective contributor to a healthcare team.

The Master’s in Business Administration OptionIn addition to earning your PharmD, you can choose to concurrently pursue a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). An MBA can provide you the business skills and resources to help you manage your pharmacy practice, improve efficiency, and to think like an entrepreneur.

D’Youville offers an accelerated MBA option designed for students enrolled in the professional pharmacy program. Taking one business administration course at a time, you can complete your MBA degree in 12 to 18 months – depending on transferable credits. When you graduate with both a PharmD and an MBA, you’ll be qualified for even more job opportunities.

Students enrolled in the PharmD program receive a 50% discount on tuition for courses in D’Youville’s MBA program.

The Master’s in Health Services AdministrationWhile pursuing your PharmD, our pharmacy students may also choose to concurrently enroll in the Master’s of Science (MS) degree in Health Services Administration (HSA) offered on-campus by D’Youville. This flexible program is designed by the HSA Department to provide the real-world skills you’ll need to enhance your skills in management, finance, decision-making, research, and leadership in the pharmacy profession and health care settings beyond the pharmacy. You’ll learn from a diverse range of professionals who bring their expertise and real-world experience to the classroom. Graduates of the D’Youville HSA Master’s program are able to: understand the complex dynamics of the U.S. healthcare system; skillfully and comfortably collaborate with other professionals, manage health services employees, and lead a wide range of healthcare organizations; understand and be adept at applying the key components of ethics, law, and privacy in a health services environment; and, apply business skills in the healthcare environment.

Tuition for the Master’s in Health Services Administration may be available at a discounted rate.

The Master’s in Public HealthMaster’s in Public Health is a joint program that is run through Daemen College. The Master’s in Public Health is typically started during the professional 4 year and extends on for one additional year upon graduation from the doctor of pharmacy program.

The Master’s in Public Health program is offered at a discounted rate.

Pharmacists are health care professionals who have a thorough knowledge and deep understanding of the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications. As a pharmacist you will have a wide range of responsibilities, from reviewing and monitoring medication regimens, to educating and counseling patients on the correct use of medications, to compounding medicines, and much more. Through four years of hands-on coursework and extensive supervised pharmacy practice experiences, D’Youville School of Pharmacy prepares you for the demanding pharmacy profession.

To expand your opportunities for professional growth and networking, you are required to become a member of the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) once you are a student in the PharmD program. We encourage you to join other student organizations as well. There are chapters of the Student Societies of Health-System Pharmacy (SSHP), Student College of Clinical Pharmacy (SCCP), Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society, Phytomedicinal Society, and the Rho Chi Society (Academic Honor Society) as well as several other student pharmacy organizations, here on campus.

There are also three professional fraternities within the D’Youville School of Pharmacy that you can choose to join:

• Kappa Psi (ΚΨ)

• Phi Delta Chi (ΦΔΧ)

• Lamda Kappa Sigma (ΛΚΣ)

Pharmacy students jump right into hands-on learning, beginning supervised introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs) just six weeks into their first semester. Experiential education provides you with opportunities for active learning at a variety of pharmaceutical care centers.

Early practice experiences allow you to:

• Solve problems related to medications

• Learn to communicate with patients

• Manage yourself and others

The D’Youville School of Pharmacy places students in a variety of pharmacy practices where they gain a cumulative 1,780 hours of experience throughout the four years of the Doctoral program. Our unique academic calendar allows you to fulfill your clinical rotation requirements in pharmacies across the United States. In addition, you have the opportunity to travel abroad to participate in several international clinical rotations. Past International rotations have included Haiti, Ecuador, Uganda, Ireland, Turks and Caicos, Australia, China, and Guatemala. This exposure to a wide range of pharmacy settings and careers prepares you as you transition from student to practitioner.

The D’Youville School of Pharmacy has a student to faculty ratio of 9 to 1. Upon enrollment you are assigned a faculty advisor who will be a source of information, communication, and advisement for you throughout your four years in the program. As a result, you receive individualized attention – both in and out of class.

Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on collaboration within the School of Pharmacy. Faculty coordinate their curricula to cover related topics across classes. Team learning is an essential component of our pharmacy coursework; but the Collaborative Learning Practicum class is especially designed to allow students to exchange ideas on patient care and drug protocols. Each semester for the first three years of the PharmD program, students take a Collaborative Learning Practicum. Professors assign case studies based on what students are learning in their classes and students work in teams to discuss their perspectives and potential responses. Professors monitor students’ progress, and after an allotted time the teams return to class to present their findings. Working with classmates and professors on how to address these scenarios will prepare you for the real world situations that you will face as a professional pharmacist.
