5 00 years almost to the day Dunning will revive its ancient right to hold markets. The original right dates back to a charter granted in August 1511, and on Saturday 27th August 2011 the people of Dunning will exercise that right and hold a market in the Rollo Park as one part of a major village celebration. Janet Crow, chairperson of Dunning Parish Historical Society explained, Peter Duncan, one of our members and a keen scholar of village history, brought this to our attention. The celebrations have been coordinated by the DPHS and the Community Council. We have been very pleased that so many of the organisations, businesses and individuals are involved. Just as it was 500 years ago, this will be a “local” market. Jim Gale has been coordinating the market day. He explained: There will be no charge for entry into the Rollo Park. There will be nearly forty stalls offering a variety of things for sale as well as games, challenges and craft demonstrations. The market will be declared open at 2pm by the Town Crier and Lord Rollo. At 3pm the Jacobite Re-enactment Group “Alba” will put on a display of highland dress and weapons, including a display of the weapons in action. An important part of this historic event will be a major exhibition at St Serf’s Church. Custodians Garry Malcolm and Paul Jenkins have sourced material, information and artefacts from over ten other Historic Scotland properties. They will also have a bookstall relating to 16th Century Scotland. St Serf’s is open from 9:30 to 5pm and entry is free. The Dunning Bowling Club will be open from 2pm for visitors and non- bowlers to try their hand on the green at target bowls. When asked to comment, Frances Philip, chairperson of DCC, said: we are very lucky to have a strong community spirit and local support in Dunning. We are delighted at the amount of effort that people throughout the community are making including St Andrews Metals who have placed a large notice board in their window to keep villagers informed about this event. Everyone – locals and visitors alike - will be very welcome on the day. The will also be the chance to sample Dunning 500 Ale which has been especially brewed for the occasion. Albie Sinclair of DPHS explained: We thought that in the past most market days there would be locally brewed ale, so we asked Inveralmond Brewery if they could help. They have supplied Dunning’s Kirkstyle Inn with Dunning 500 Ale which is available from 12th August for anyone who wants a little refreshment after all that history. Gordon Banks MP

I was delighted when asked to write an article for The Hub and I didn’t have far

to look for a good news story either. Prior to the school holidays, I was fortunate to be invited to Muthill Primary School to meet with staff and pupils and to hear about the school’s varied projects and activities.

It was an uplifting visit and I was really impressed with the whole outward-looking ethos of the school culture which is reflected in everything that they do – their learning, their projects and their links to communities – locally and globally. Everything is geared to helping the pupils to be successful learners and confident, responsible individuals.

During my visit I met a representative from the British Council, the organization who support Muthill Primary’s link with the Juliet-Johnson School in Ghana. The school’s staff, pupils and indeed the Muthill community has been involved in some fantastic fundraising ventures to allow them to make a contribution to

part-funding a fully operational school bus so that their counterparts in Ghana came have the basic necessities that we are able to take for granted here.

Muthill Primary is a Global Partnership School which allows classes from schools in other countries to be involved in joint curricular work with them, and pupils enthusiastically told me about the teacher exchange programme; about which there seemed to be consensus that it deepened the learning experience for all concerned.

I feel that this is not only an excellent way of making learning “real” for the young, but it also gives them an appreciation of the cultural diversity in the world and a realization that there are many children who are a lot less fortunate than themselves. The school is also working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School; by learning about their own rights and responsibilities, the children learn to respect the rights of others.

At the time of my visit, the pupils were

involved in the campaign Send My Sister to School, and were busy learning about the barriers to education for girls and women in the global south where various factors are preventing them from taking up their basic right to an education.

It was a very full visit and I also attended the P6 – P7 election proceedings, which I really enjoyed - and it was most informing to listen to the pupils’ perceptions of the world of politics. I was also presented with a tie made up in the famous Heart of Strathearn tartan, designed by a former Crieff pupil as part of the enterprise tartan project. Yes, my visit was a really enjoyable one and I’m looking forward to the next.

SNP name candidate for highland perthshire by-electionThe Scottish National Party have

announced that local man Mike Williamson is to be their candidate in the by-election for the Highland ward of Perth & Kinross Council.

The by-election will be held on Thursday 15 September 2011.Mr John Swinney MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire North, gave his backing to Mike Williamson, saying:“With a combination of local knowledge and commitment to his community, the SNP couldn’t ask for a better candidate for this by-election than Mike Williamson. I know that he will ensure that the voice of Highland Perthshire is heard loud and clear.”

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, added his support, saying: “From Logierait to Glen Lyon and Rannoch Station to Ballinluig, voters will have an opportunity to elect a new councillor.Mike is a great candidate and will make a fantastic councillor for Highland ward, working with local people to ensure that the best possible public services are provided for this area.

Mike’s Election Agent, Cllr Kate Howie, who won a previous by-election

in the Highland ward, concluded: “As chair of Aberfeldy Community Council, Mike knows well the issues facing this area. I know that he will be a huge asset to the SNP Group and to the Council as a whole. The SNP will be campaigning hard to secure Mike’s election and I look forward to welcoming him as a colleague in the Council Chamber.”

Mr Williamson, said: “I am delighted to have been selected to represent the SNP in this by-election and I will be working hard to get elected to represent the people and communities of Highland Perthshire.

“I promise them that if they put their trust in me I will not let them down.”

Madam,

As the Chieftain of this year’s Perth Highland Games, I write to express my sadness at their cancellation. This is an important event in Perth’s summer calendar, and brings many tourists and competitors to Perth from all over Scotland, the rest of the UK, and from overseas. In the five years of my provostship the Games have been cancelled twice, and moved at the last minute to Scone racecourse once. It will be impossible to secure the long-term success of the Games if this pattern continues.

I believe that an alternative venue, which is less susceptible to flooding, but still accessible from the Perth’s city centre needs to be found. The North Inch is the obvious candidate, but I am aware that there are some challenges to be overcome if that is chosen.

Dr. John Hulbert,Provost of Perth & Kinross.

Letter to the Editor

New partnership will transform care services for older peopleA new partnership agreement that will

transform the future provision of care for older people in Perth and Kinross was signed by local public, private and voluntary sector organisations on Monday 15 August.

The transformation is about changing the way services are delivered in order to make sustainable support available for everyone now and into the future, and to make sure services meet individual needs.

It means taking services to the people, instead of taking people to where the services are. Older people requiring social care in Perth and Kinross will be supported to live independently in their own homes whenever possible rather than in long-term hospital or residential care, thanks to the community-focused change in the way services will be delivered.

Unnecessary admission to hospital will be prevented, and when people are hospitalised they will be discharged earlier. The process is being pushed forward under the Change Fund, a Scottish Government programme which provides funding for the Health and Social Care, voluntary and private sectors to work together to develop

services that will meet the challenges of a growing elderly population. The number of people aged over-65 living in Perth and Kinross is expected to increase by 74% by 2031, significantly higher than the national level of 61%.

Around £2.3 million has been allocated for service development in Perth and Kinross, following a bid submitted by NHS Tayside and Perth & Kinross Council.

Today, the Council and NHS Tayside were joined by Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Service (PKAVS) and care homes association Scottish Care to sign the agreement which will see them work together to improve the lives of older people in the area.

As well as providing better value care for service users in a community setting that is beneficial to clients, the work will reduce the number of hospital bed days lost through delayed discharge of patients.

Care provision will be tailored according to what support already exists in local communities and what additional support can be developed. Community partnerships will be forged, and innovation will be encouraged in local communities in order to offer a robust range of community

support. For example Community Timebanks could be set up to allow people to volunteer their time to help older people in their communities. Community Timebanking allows individuals to use their skills to support people in their local area now, so that when they need help other people will be there for them. There are no limits on what people can do for their communities - it could range from doing the shopping for elderly neighbours, to helping older people with their gardening or housework.

Another improvement will be the introduction of step-up/step-down care. This will provide an intermediate level of care for people who aren’t in a position to cope at home with support, but where a hospital bed is too intensive a level of care for them.

Closer links are being secured between the partners through a new joint commissioning strategy. This will ensure a high level of co-ordination and planning as the programme is taken forward. Local community GPs will also play an important role in developing new services.

Housing and Health Convener, Councillor Peter Barrett, said: “This change is a

response what service users have told us they wanted. For a long time older people have told us that they don’t want to go into hospital or into residential care unless they really have to, so this is about providing community-based services that help people remain in their own homes. Older people have an important and active role to play in community life. We want to empower them, and their local communities, to engage in the provision of new services. This project will improve community cohesion and enhance people’s quality of life.

“Any changes to services will happen over the next few years. Changes will be shaped by the specific requirements of individual communities and by the commitment of people in those communities, at a pace which is appropriate to them. All partners are committed to a full engagement programme with individual communities as plans emerge and develop.”

Karen Cowley, Chief Executive of PKAVS said: “This programme will enable PKAVS to work closely with communities and support new initiatives from the ground up. Our main aim is to work with our partners to find ways of doing things differently to

make a bigger impact on people’s quality of life. Volunteering, building community resources and connecting people are all important aspects of our role. Initiatives such as setting up Community Timebanks will enable local communities to thrive.”

Evelyn Devine, Head of Older Peoples Services at Perth & Kinross Community Health Partnership, said: “The Change Fund provides NHS Tayside and our partners with the opportunity to refocus our joint resources to enable us to make real improvements in the delivery of services for older people. To do this, we will be engaging with local communities and general practitioners and empowering them to become involved to help shape local service provision to ensure they meet the needs of the local community.”

Regional Chair of Scottish Care, Alastair Stewart, added: “On behalf of local care providers, Scottish Care welcomes the Perth and Kinross Change Fund Plan. We firmly believe that only an effective partnership between service users, service providers, the Council and the Health Board will deliver the outcomes needed to meet the needs of older people and their families.”

Nominations required for Spirit of Youth AwardsPreparations are underway

for the 2011 Spirit of Youth Awards, and organisers from Perth & Kinross Council’s Youth Services and the local Youth Council are asking residents to nominate young people whose outstanding achievements make them worthy of recognition.

2011 is the fifth anniversary of the Awards being presented and their success so far makes it all the more important for local communities to highlight young people aged between 12 and 25 who they feel deserve an award for their efforts either as an individual or as a group. There are a range of categories including caring for the environment, being active citizens, contributing to sports or the arts and making

personal and special endeavours which show a determination to succeed.

Each category will have three finalists, with a winner and certificates of merit for the runners up. The recipient of the overall Spirit of Youth Award will be chosen from all the category winners, as the young person who has shown the greatest achievement during 2011.

The Group Awards have kindly been sponsored by local organisations as follows: Active Citizen Group Award - sponsored by DC Thomson Group Achievement Award - sponsored by DC Thomson Award for Environmental Contribution - sponsored by DC Thomson Award for Contribution to the Arts - sponsored by DC Thomson

Award for Sporting Achievement - sponsored by Live Active Leisure Award for Best Pupil Group (Secondary) - sponsored by Perth & Kinross Youth Council Award for Best Pupil Group (Primary) - sponsored by Perth & Kinross Youth Council

Sponsors are being sought for the Individual Awards, which are presented in two age groups, 12-15 and 16-25: Special Endeavour, Community Involvement, Personal Achievement, Sporting Achievement

Lifelong Learning Convener, Councillor Liz Grant said: “The Spirit of Youth Awards give recognition to the successes, efforts and achievements of our young people in the widest possible sense. They contribute to making their communities a

better place to live and strive to do their best in many different ways, and the awards provide an opportunity to highlight what they do every day in Perth and Kinross.

“It is exciting that we have already reached the fifth year of the Spirit of Youth Awards and I hope we will receive plenty of nominations for 2011.”

Anyone who would like to submit a nomination, or find out about sponsoring an award, should pop into Youth Services’ base at 68-86 Scott Street, Perth, or email [email protected]

Granny flit from B listed farmhouse to G&M shed

Mrs Margaret Gillies Brown has lived at East

Inchmichael Farmhouse for 50 years. The B listed 18th Century building comprises of 5 bedrooms, 2 function rooms, staffing quarters, larder , kitchen bathrooms and its very own Chapel!

Margaret now in her later years of life decided it was time to down size.

Conveniently for Margaret she knew exactly who to ask, Grant Gillies of Gillies and Mackay Ltd. Grant being one of 7 of Margaret’s children was more than happy to oblige to the plans of a cabin at the bottom of the garden, with a little help from his siblings of course.

Grant and his brother Lindsay, (Project Manager for

TRAC) began work on site this January. A true team effort was involved with the G&M boys on the construction, Ronnie Brown on Plumbing, Andrew Gallagher on electrics and Lindsay on project management everything was still on track by May. The finer details were set about by the rest of the family. It was made quite clear they had to

buy, beg, borrow and steal for whatever was left still to do for the “Get Granny in by June campaign”. And it worked.

Last week the boys (and girl) from Gillies and Mackay attended a post moving in celebration with the official handing over of the keys. With the assistance of Cairn o’ Mohr Cider and Na’ans Cairn o’ Cafe Cake!

Council issues plea on building maintenance Perth & Kinross Council is urging

building owners to ensure that properties are well maintained in order to prevent masonry and slates falling from them.

Recent incidents of masonry and slates falling into the street at North Port and Scott Street in Perth have highlighted the

need for proper maintenance of buildings.Enterprise and Infrastructure Convener,

Councillor John Kellas, said: “In both of these cases parked vehicles sustained some damage, but of more concern is the potential for serious injury to members of the public who may have been passing at the time.

“It is the responsibility of private building owners to ensure that their properties are maintained to a safe and proper standard.

“Recent weather patterns - very cold winters, strong

winds and summer downpours - have been a major contributing factor in loosening masonry and slates from poorly maintained buildings.

“After extreme weather events building owners – particularly of older properties - should ensure that they get roofs and chimneys checked for damage. Owners are advised that if they live in a conservation area or if the building is listed that anything other than minor repair work may require prior consent. For clarification or advice they should contact the Council’s Conservation Section in the Planning & Regeneration Service.

“At this time of year there is also a problem with vegetation growing from roofs which can be causing unseen damage. Owners should ensure this is removed.”

Wishart highlights challenges and opportunities of growing populationThe Scottish National

Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire has highlighted the challenges and opportunities associated with recently published reports showing that not only is the population of Scotland at its highest level since 1977 but that Perth & Kinross is exhibiting the second highest population growth rate in the country.

Mr Wishart said: “Scotland’s population is growing, decades of depopulation are being reversed - and that is welcome news.“The reasons behind this growth are varied. Human migration is up with new folk coming in from elsewhere in the UK as well as from elsewhere in Europe, birth rates are now rising and the death rate is falling.

“I welcome all of these factors but we need to be aware that there are both challenges and opportunities to be

addressed as a consequence of this population growth.“Schools for the young, health services for a burgeoning population and care services for increased numbers of elderly are only part of the picture. Sewerage systems, refuse collection, housing supply and infrastructure. All these and others have to be planned with a growing population in mind.

“This Scotland of ours is far from full and we should be welcoming with open arms those who are attracted to what is a great country and who bring with them new skills and talents that will help us build the services that our growing population will demand.

“Perth & Kinross, quite rightly, always scores highly on surveys of best places to live so it comes as little surprise that within that national picture of growing population, we have the second highest growth rate, yet another argument for Perth’s status as a city to be officially recognised.”

It is an important event that attracts a lot of visitors to the area, and the committee that runs it is to be congratulated on its success.

“Perth & Kinross cultural strategy states that the Council will contribute to the growing and diverse local economy by supporting creativity and tourism.

“We are delighted to support Perthshire Open Studios. The event is just one of a number of unique events hosted here that reinforce the image of Perth & Kinross as a quality destination.”

Testimonial“We would like to let you know how happy we are with our Hub Newspaper advertising campaign. The staff have been very helpful and we have found the cost to be extremely good value for money, we are also very impressed by the customer service and the fact that we have regular personal visits from our account manager, it makes a difference when someone takes the time to get to know you and your business. Since placing our advertising in the Hub newspaper we have also seen a dramatic increase in the level of enquiries and people visiting our unit so would have no hesitation in recommending any business to give the HUB newspaper a try, if it works as well for other businesses as it has for ours then it would be well worth the investment.

Thanks again to all at the HUB Newspaper.”

Cash collection change at Council Area OfficesCash payments at

Council area offices in Blairgowrie, Pitlochry and Crieff are to end from August 31st 2011 in favour of more convenient methods of payment.

In recent years payments in area offices have reduced significantly as people have moved over to Direct Debit or online payment methods.

In June 2009 the Council agreed that the collection of cash in rural area offices should stop completely in favour of alternative methods.

Our existing Area Housing Team staff will all still be based at the area offices and residents can continue to contact them about any housing matters and arrange appointments to see the Housing Officers, the Property Inspector or the Registrar.

People who want to pay their Council Tax or rent in cash can still do so at their local Post Office counter or at any shop offering the PayPoint service.

There are a number of easy ways you can pay your regular Council bills. The simplest and most efficient is Direct Debit, which allows you to make a regular payment directly from your bank account.

You can also pay Council bills by:* Debit or credit card

payment by telephone to the Customer Service Centre on 01738 475000 or online at www.pkc.gov.uk* Debit or credit card payment at any time of day or night by telephone to 0845 603 0121* Standing Order* Cheques posted to Perth and Kinross Council, PO Box 7299, Perth PH1 5GD* Pay at your own bank* Pay at the Coupar Angus sub-office, which will remain open until the end of November 2011, or at Pullar House, Perth. (Coupar Angus sub-office, which currently has very limited opening hours, is closing in November due to the retiral of a member of staff).

If you still want to pay in person locally you can do so at any shop displaying the PayPoint logo, or at your local Post Office counter. Please note that there may be a charge for paying some bills at the Post Office.

September is heritage month!Celebrate the archaeology and historic

buildings of Perth and Kinross throughout September for FREE.

Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust are delighted to present for 2011 a combined Perthshire Archaeology Month and Doors Open Day, offering a month-long calendar of events, talks and guided walks throughout September. Admission to all sites and events are free, so get booking!

The programme for this year will start on 1st September with the launch of Perth, a Place in History, an exciting new book based on the highly successful conference held last September as part of Perth’s ‘Perth800’ celebrations.

A key event in Perthshire Archaeology Month will tackle ivy clearance and recording at important historic church ruins in the Carse of Gowrie. Places are available for volunteers to help reveal the ruins, aiding in their conservation, while helping to unravel their often complex history through drawn surveys. You can help us explore and care for these ancient buildings - learning new skills while having fun!

Doors Open Days will take place over the weekend of 24th and 25th of September – part of a Scotland-wide programme, that is itself part of European Heritage Days. See inside Perth Fire Station and the Police Station, or travel up the A9 to Redgorton and visit Scottish Natural Heritage’s Offices at Battleby. Over 50 sites are open over the two days.

While visiting these sites and events why not take part in our photography competition? A picture paints a thousand words and your participation will help us expand our photographic records of all archaeology sites and historic building in Perth and Kinross, creating a photographic archive of the historic environment for future generations to enjoy. See www.pkht.org.uk for competition details and prizes.

Information is available at www.doorsopendays.org.uk and at www.pkht.org.uk or by picking up a copy of the combined programme, available from a range of locations including the AK Bell Library, Perth Museum and Art Gallery and VisitScotland Information Centres.

Perthshire Breakfast project signs up major local hotelA scheme which aims to

promote the diverse produce of Perth and Kinross and support local tourism businesses has signed up its first large hotel.

The Perthshire Breakfast scheme encourages tourism businesses to offer local food and drink to customers for breakfast. It was launched last year and has been taken up by many B&Bs in the area.

Now Duchally Hotel and Country Estate near Auchterarder has signed up to the project, making it the first large local tourism business to join in.The Council’s Enterprise and Infrastructure Vice Convener, Councillor Ann Gaunt, joined the hotel’s general manager Graeme MacDonald at the resort today to see how its chefs plan to cook up their version of a Perthshire Breakfast. A Perthshire Breakfast consists of at least 50% of Perthshire-produced food and drink.

The scheme supports local B&B and hotel businesses by

giving them a selling point, whilst providing a boost to local food producing businesses and promoting Perth and Kinross as a food destination.Councillor Gaunt said: “A Perthshire Breakfast shines the spotlight on the huge variety of delicious, local and seasonal food found in Perthshire. “From outstanding raspberries and mouth-watering soft fruit to fresh free range eggs and honey, from top quality beef, lamb and game to wild boar, succulent venison and an array of vegetables, Perthshire is unbeatable, and locally sourced food is almost always fresher and of higher quality.

“A Perthshire Breakfast gives visitors to our area the chance to experience this top quality produce. Visitors will know where their food has come from and the story behind it, creating a very positive image for both the business and the area. “Businesses can choose what produce to use at different times of year, and present dishes using their own imagination

and flair. As well as offering visitors beautiful authentic food, another benefit of a Perthshire Breakfast is that produce is locally sourced, thereby reducing transportation miles and helping minimise adverse environmental impact.

Graeme MacDonald added: “Duchally Hotel and Country Estate is delighted to be the first hotel in Perthshire to offer a Perthshire Breakfast. Research shows that today’s visitors are looking for a `food experience` where they can sample a local culture through the food and drink of a region – offering a Perthshire Breakfast is an excellent way of doing this. “Since highlighting that we offer a Perthshire Breakfast and increasing the local products we offer at breakfast, sales and customer satisfaction have increased dramatically. We actively try to buy local where possible for the quality and to enhance the customer

experience in our restaurant and bar.”

The Perthshire Breakfast initiative is part of Perth and Kinross Council’s Developing Rural Tourism Project. The project supports new initiatives to develop tourism across the area and is funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Perth & Kinross Council would be delighted to hear from any tourism business interested in learning more about the initiative. Please email [email protected] for more information.

End of an Era as Garden Tour Guide Retires

John Dick, a much loved (and always kilted!) tour guide at Explorers Garden, Pitlochry has hung up his sporran after ten

years and 240 Garden tours.Popular amongst locals and visitors alike, his tours were packed

with the stories and adventures of the Scottish Plant Hunters as well as all things botanical. “I would like to thank John for all his help over the years, he will be sorely missed” said Explorers Garden Volunteer Co-ordinator Glenda Rudd, continuing “and we wish him all the best with his retirement!”

John was presented with a print of a red squirrel (of which there

are many in the Garden) by artist Anne Chambers. The original picture was commissioned by Explorers Garden and features one of the resident squirrels. Garden tours continue throughout the Summer months every Wednesday and Sunday at 11.30am. For further information, visit www.explorersgarden.com.

“We are always on the look out for volunteers for the garden, including tour guides!” added Glenda, “If you would like to follow in the footsteps of John Dick, please get in touch or come along and take a tour – it’s not often you get to traverse all the continents in a single afternoon!”

Progression BikesDunkeld is located on the first

step into Highland Perthshire, making it an ideal stop for those looking to experience what the area has to offer.

This year, Dunkeld has been witnessing a mountain biking explosion, and a development that is only just beginning to gather pace. You can’t travel more than 100 yards up the A9 without seeing bikes on roof racks, and now is the time for any person or business to get involved. Progression Bikes, based by the river in Dunkeld, opposite the Atholl Arms Hotel, is new this year but has already become an asset to the village.

Run by Adam Flint, it is a company that was originally planning to specialise in bike hire and coaching alone. With a background in coaching and mountain biking, this seemed a logical step for Adam. However for the business it was clear that the people of Dunkeld and of Perthshire demanded more from their friendly local bike shop, and that is exactly what they got. Progression Bikes now not only has a wide range of bikes for hire including kids bikes and trailers but stocks spares, parts, and complete bikes from Ghost, Lapierre, Rocky Mountain, Norco, Nukeproof and more. Bikes can also be repaired and serviced, with turnaround usually same day. In addition, in 2012 road bikes and hybrids will be available for hire and purchase, making it a one-stop-shop for cyclists travelling North or South.

However Progression Bikes has also been exploring a number of niche markets. The uplift service has been running well in Craigvinean Forest for downhill mountain bikers, many of whom now stay for the weekend and take part in other activities and sample local hospitality. Also with the inevitable rush as the months turn cold(er), those looking to buy bikes in the run up to Christmas can take advantage of 0% finance and a Christmas Eve bike delivery service. That means no hiding suspicious packages under the stairs or a mad last minute dash around the shops. Progression Bikes will deliver fully built and checked bikes and accessories to your door just in time to sneak them under the tree. They are even now involved with the cycle-to-work scheme.

So rather than tell you any more, why not stop in for a chat about local routes, suitable bikes for that special someone or to book a guided trip or coaching session.Contact them on 07825322225 or email [email protected]

Rock Awesome Tour Ends In PerthThe Black Lights concluded their album tour titled “ Rock Awesome “with a visit to Perth. Playing in the relatively new “Clearwater Showcases” started to give local newbie bands a platform to gig from.Organisers Clearwater Studios wanted to highlight the up and coming talent that Perth has to offer but to draw the crowds they also like to feature a more experienced band in each showcase and the Black Lights filled that slot for them on Sunday. They played alongside Local band Stone Dead, fife band Vereor, Dundee band Shoogar and local band Whole Lotta Riff Raff.

The Black Lights are a collective of five (more or less) grown men who hail from the hills and dales of Central Scotland, formed in early 2006. James McCulloch – Throat Steven Nicol - Guitar, Auxillary Throat Tony Riccio – Bass Stuart Penketh – Drums Cameron Arndt – Guitar.

“If you happen to be tired and sick of the re-processed hippity hop beats, affected accents that plague sanitised ‘indie’ like a drunken mistake and the whiny bubblegum melodrama of fringe-weilding teenagers then we are a band you can trust to offer a guilt-free and refreshingly honest alternative” claims lead “throat” as James McCulloch likes to call himself.

Steel-lunged vocals spitting out melodies that cling to your conscience with VD-like enthusiasm, enough riffz ‘n’ drumz to blow a hole deep enough for sans-bullshit lyrics to be fully absorbed and live shows that remind you just why sweaty lager soaked venues are infinitely preferable to listening at home with the volume at 4....that’s them.

Although their actual tour may be over The Black Lights are not resting, “ if we stay still for a minute the alcohol in

Steven’s blood may cause him to spontaneously combust”.They have gig’s by the plenty with this Sunday the 21st August seeing them in “Slouch” in Glasgow followed by “Back in the Attic” on the 27th of August. As for their experience in Perth @ the Clearwater Showcase, “we had an awesome night in Perth …. Sold out of t-shirts too”Local Promoter Iain Pryde of “Pryde Tiger Promotions” came along to see the guys perform, “the lads played a brilliant set tonight, we will definitely need to get them back for one of our gigs.”

Perth Airport not just for flying

This month see’s the launch of something new for Perth Airport.

A young vibrant and fresh Local band Whigs and Rakes are about to launch a residency event there. Playing 6 dates from August the 24th through to March 14th 2012 at the Hanger, they will showcase their talent and that of other local artists including Anthony McIntyre, Taylor McQuillan.

The Hangar was built in 1936 as an assembly hall for the thousand or so aviation students who lived and learned here at Perth Airport. While the Airport continues to function as a training centre, The Hangar remains a gathering place but has been transformed into a stylish, versatile venue playing host to all sorts of events.

Whigs and Rakes have come on Leaps and bounds in the last year since forming in 2010 playing their first gig at Tents in the Park, and being the main

attraction at BBC Blast tour in Perth. Playing every possible gig they could they were soon recognized as a band to be watched. Recording and releasing their first E.P at the tail end of 2010 with the help of Clearwater Studios Fiona Munro and being a featured favourite on Andy Gees radio show “The Sound” on Radio North Angus every Saturday @ 12.30pm, these guys have certainly been busy letting the country know who they are.The shows are tailored for the younger crowd however the Hanger does cater for over 18 also so all ages are welcome. Buses run regularly to and from the Hanger, No 57 from South street and Tay Taxi’s have generously offered a reduced taxi fare for anyone wishing to attend.Check the band out at : www.facebook.com/pages/Whigs-Rakes/145540065460865 /www.myspace.com/whigsandrakes

My Summer Holiday 2011 By George Hughes

The Fair City Singers, the youth choir for 11-17 year olds from

Perthshire in Scotland went on tour to Holland from the 04th July to the 11th of July.

This is one young members recall of the trip.

4th-11th JulyI have been singing with the Fair City Singers for almost 2 years and this was my first chance to go on tour with them, it was also my first trip abroad. The Singers were going to Holland. We set off for Hull in a bus and spent the night on a ferry. We arrived the next day in Zebrugge and drive to Valkenburg in the bus. The rest of the day was spent touring the caves, ruins and a toboggan run. The day ended with a sing-song in the lounge. After a very cold swim in the outdoor pool at Valkenburg and a hot shower we were off the Aachen for our first concert of the tour. In the evening we did our second concert in Valkenburg bandstand. It was a pretty good day!The highlight of the tour for me was our visit to Amsterdam. There was a canal cruise; I saw a multi- storey bike park!! A visit to Anne Frank’s house, where we wore our backpacks on front, and the Rijksmuseum (art gallery) where I saw some very famous paintings including the ‘Night Watch’ by Rembrandt and pictures by Vermeer. There was a concert in the evening at Monnikendam, we got back to the hotel very late.

The following morning the Singers had a shopping trip in Valkenburg and we performed to the shopkeepers, the final concert of the tour was in Brussels in the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula. After all the hard work the choir had a fun day out in Phantasialand, Germany, with ten pin bowling in the evening. Before departing the hotel on Sunday morning the Singers sang a farewell song to the hotel people; ‘Feeling Good’, then a visit to the Technopolis,

science museum at Machelen where I did lots of stuff. Then it was off to Zebrugge for the ferry back to Hull. I got home to my family and guitar on Monday. This has been a great experience and a one- off for me.Mr and Mrs Neilson are retiring at the end of August after over 20 years of running the Fair City Singers, there is to be a final concert, ‘A Night to Remember’ in Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 28th August at 7.30pm. However the choir will not be ending as a new couple are taking over.

Although Wimbledon is behind us and the

high ranking players are in America for the US Open,

tennis is still high on the agenda in Perth with the most important tournament on the local calendar, the

Perth Tennis Club “Tennis in the Pink” event in support of Breast Cancer Research.

The event takes place at

the club on Sunday, 21st August between 1.00pm and 5.00pm. Entries for the fun tournament have

been received from players of clubs across Perth and Kinross but there are still spaces available. As well as contributing to an excellent cause, players will be competing for the “Bob Wilson Salvers”. Bob Wilson was President of Perth Tennis Club for 10 years and donated the salvers to the club to commemorate his 50 tennis playing years. To add to the fun, all players will be encouraged to wear pink and PINK tennis balls will be used for the tournament, donated by Price of Bath.

But to support the Club’s Breast Cancer event, you don’t have to play tennis and everyone is invited! There are another five games to play which will help to raise money for this extremely important cause. In the club’s snooker room there is a “Pick a Pocket & Pocket the Pink” game, the prize for which is a signed cue donated by ex-world champion Stephen Hendry. There is also an opportunity to try your hand at batting a ping pong ball into some “pink jars” to win a pink prize. The squash court will house a “Coin and Bottle” competition with various bottles on offer, including a 10 year

old donated by Glenturret Distillery. A putting game, name the duck, and test your knowledge in some “pink quizzes” completes the fun afternoon.

There will also be an auction and raffle with the prizes including three luxury cottage breaks, all next to golf courses, a 3 course meal with wine at The Bothy, Perth, a free Haircut & Finish at Charlie Taylor, a Campus Sports voucher, and the opportunity for 4 people to enjoy the Club at Gleneagles for a day. Raffle tickets can be bought on the day at the club.

President Howard Finch said “as we have such a great facility at Hay Street, with the squash court, snooker and table tennis rooms, we thought we would use all of them to ensure a fun day while realising as much as possible for this extremely important cause. We look forward to seeing you to join in the fun on Sunday 21 August whilst helping to support Breast Cancer Research.”If you want to enter into the tennis tournament or for any further information on the event contact Irene Rixson on 07702 477031 ([email protected]).

Sweet treats

• To remove streaks from stainless steel splash-backs, hobs and cooker hoods after cleaning, simply dap a soft cloth in petroleum jelly and rub into the stainless steel for a streak free shine (also works with baby oil).• Stop your dishcloth from smelling and breeding bacteria by popping it in the dishwasher with your dishes on the wash cycle.• When you have been chopping garlic or onions, wash your hands with ordinary soap and lather with a stainless steel spoon in your hands, the spoon neutralises the odour while the soap cleans.

• When buying sweet peppers for cooking, choose the ones that look a little past their best, the wrinkles indicate a sweeter and more flavoursome pepper.• To remove a splinter first try very sticky tape or a plaster dressing and use the tackiness to pull the splinter, if that fails, soak the area in vegetable oil for a 5 minutes and then remove with tweezers.• If you write on a dry wipe board with a permanent marker pen by accident, just go over the same writing with a dry wipe marker and wipe off before it dries and it will lift the permanent marker clean off.

You probably think there’s nothing much more boring than

watching paint dry unless that paint just happens to be whitewash! Actually white walls can be a stroke of genius when it comes to deciding on colour schemes for your home.White goes with almost anything, so it makes interior design and decorating just a little bit easier… and you don’t have to be so careful with the paintbrush and roller, white against white is a dream… it even makes the room look bigger than it really is.Sleek modern furniture with its angular protrusions or curvy twists sit well against a completely white canvass, while antique and distressed furniture, dark or light wood and a variety of metals can look equally at home against the white gallery feature walls. To be honest though white everywhere will eventually make your eyes hurt so add some bold splashes of statement colour, a statement wall centre piece, a statement clock or statement piece of furniture can break up all that white with a wow of colour that not only looks good amongst all that pristineness (yes that is a word) but can be the start of any contrasting theme in any room.Go for Bright Greens, Hot Pinks, Primary colours and Purples to stay within the current trends. Be really bold and go for the whole lot in one room… we dare you!

You’ll find lots of inspiration in magazines or even in your local DIY store, most of which now sell accessories such as mirrors, lighting and art, so it’s a great starting point if you want to make that first leap into changing a room without going down the “home makeover TV show” route and having someone create weird shapes with masking tape or paint that 300 year old antique sideboard (and family heirloom) with a tin of orange emulsion.

In the self-care and beauty industry, the latest craze is to

include sugar in skin care products. If you search the internet you will find everything from sugar body scrubs to sugar hair removers. The prices can range from a few £’s to as much as £30.00 for each product. How’s that for a product in which the main ingredient can cost you a no more that £1.00 a bag!To enjoy all of the benefits of a sugar based product without shelling out your hard earned cash, try these really simple recipes:

Orange Cream Sugar Body ScrubThis recipe is great to remove dead skin and give your skin a healthy glow. The sugar contains glycolic acid and the cream is a source for lactic acid. Avoid irritated or broken skin areas.

Ingredients: ½ cup sugar, 2 TBSP cream or whole milk, 5 drops orange oil, and 1 cup olive, jojoba, or almond oilMix sugar, oil and cream together. Add orange oil after main ingredients are completely mixed.Apply to your body by starting at the feet and working your way up. Massage in a circular motion and leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then shower it off. This recipe is enough to make one full body treatment.

Lemon Head Sugar Body ScrubThis recipe is both cleansing and detoxifying. Lemon is very detoxifying to the body and will also help brighten the skin.Ingredients: ½ cup sugar, 10 drops lemon oil, or ½ a lemon freshly squeezed, and 1 cup olive, jojoba, or almond oil

Mix all ingredients together. Apply to your body by starting at the feet and working your way up. Massage in a circular motion, then shower it off. This recipe is enough to make one full body treatment.

Facial CleanserIngredients: white or brown sugar, your favorite facial cleanser, witch hazel, and waterUsing your favorite daily facial soap, an easy, inexpensive facial scrub can be made by adding sugar. Simply add a teaspoon of either white sugar or brown sugar and massage it gently on your facial skin. Rinse with cool water and spritz your face with a ½ witch hazel and ½ water mixture.

Sugar is a natural and inexpensive way to include alpha-hydroxy acids in your skincare program. It produces glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, which is included in many skincare product lines. Today’s pricey beauty products that include sugar or alpha hydroxy acid, can be created inexpensively right at your kitchen table. You can experience all of the benefits without the inflated price.

Perthshire writer and singer to appear at Walking Festival event

Well-known

Perthshire writer and singer Jess Smith will present a talk at Blairgowrie Library as part of this year’s Blairgowrie & East Perthshire Walking Festival.

Jess is a traditional storyteller from Perthshire’s travelling people and her early years were spent travelling across Scotland in an old blue Bedford bus with

Jess’s autobiographical trilogy, Jessie’s Journey, Tales from the Tent and Tears for a Tinker is a memorable account of a way of life that has all but vanished. The books were all on the Scottish best sellers list and have been published in the USA and Canada.

Jess has also written a novel, Bruar’s Rest, and a collection of Scottish Traveller tales called Sookin’ Berries. The talk takes place in the Royal Hotel, Blairgowrie on Friday 16 September at 8pm. Tickets are priced £4 and can be obtained from Blairgowrie Library in Leslie Street. For more information telephone 01250 872905 or email [email protected].

Bankfoot To Get Post Office BackFollowing the closure of their Post Office in

July 2008, the locals of bankfoot welcomed the decision by Post Office Ltd to reopen a branch at the Nisa Local Store in the village’s High Street.

Post Office Ltd has been working tirelessly to try and reopen a branch in Bankfoot and have come to an agreement with the sub-postmaster at the Methven branch to supply the service to Bankfoot six hours a week, 9:30 – 11:30 on Monday Wednesday and Friday starting on Monday September 19th.

Given the number of transactions per day online

this is a very good question recently asked by one of our readers. It is also quite timely as my debit card was cloned a couple of weeks ago from an online purchase so let me try and help you understand how it works.

Firstly, when you are buying something online, make sure the comp0any you are buying from is legitimate and trustworthy. Many companies now accept payment via PayPal and this is fairly secure however, in recent months we have seen the rise of the false payment window where a scammer has created a false webpage identical to the PayPal one and asked you for the information. This it appears is what happened to me.

So what can you do about it? Really it is quite simple, when you are entering a payment page online, the address line will change slightly and instead of having “http://” you will see that

it changes to “https://” indicating that this is a secure area. There will also be a wee gold padlock symbol in the address bar showing you who the company is. If this does not appear then it is not really safe to input your details. You can also set up a “Verify By Visa/Mastercard” setting so that when you go to pay anything, the website will divert you to enter your verification password, this prevents any fraudulent activity on your account and many sites are now using this as part of the payment process.

You should also check the Privacy Statement for the website you are using, this will explain how they are using your data, where and how it will be stored and how to contact them about your information.

The sort of things to be aware of are the sites where you are asked to input personal information or bank details where there is no “https://” in the address line. It does not

mean they are not secure but it does mean they are not using a secure payment site and this was my downfall. I needed to get an update for my SatNav and used a site which did not have the https but felt that having read the information relating to the payment it would be safe. Three days later, the night before I was going on holiday, my account was relieved of over £1400….. The bank felt this was unusual and blocked my account until I had contacted them to clarify what had happened. They sent me an email asking me to call them, if you ever get one asking you to fill things in online just delete it, it is a scam! Once I had called them we started to unravel the fraud and I eventually got my account back a week later.

So, if you are not sure, do not click to pay and if you have any queries about any of this please feel free to contact me at KPG Professional Services on [email protected] or by calling 07413 943228 for help and guidance.

Buy local...that includes your website! You’re fired up, full of

enthusiasm for your new business idea. You’ve come up with a name, a logo and now you have to get out there and market what you are going to sell. Ok, stationery is a must but top of your list nowadays is a website.

Where do you start? There are thousands of website developers out there, accessible through the web but if you are new to this you will probably be more confident in dealing with a local company.

Yellow pages or any other of the telephone directory maybe your first port of call but surely a quick search through Google would be more effective. After all a local web design company that comes up for a specific geographical search in your area eg. Web Design Perth is going to return companies that have the required skills to optimize their website for useful key phrases and if they can do it for themselves just think what they can do for your website! If you

can get a recommendation from a friend or business contact then even better.

So you have identified a web design company in your area through your search of the web, now check out their portfolio follow up with a call to a couple of their clients and get some feedback from them. Everyone wants a visually appealing website that captures the feel you want to represent your business but how can you tell if the web designers

you are going to consider develop technically well built websites. You’ve probably heard the phrase search engine friendly website, well that is what you are aiming to achieve when you make this investment. On the web designer’s portfolio check if their websites download quickly? What claims have they made about SEO results for their clients?Meeting the web design company

When you meet with the web design company to discuss your

brief here are some less obvious questions you need to ask:• Will you have the opportunity to approval the design • How long would they expect to take to develop the website?• Will they do initial SEO work on the website within the development cost? • Will the website adhere to current web standards?Making your mind up

You may choose to meet with 2 or 3 web design companies and get

quotes. If you are motivated only by the bottom line you may end up very disappointed. Just be sure whoever you choose they are going to be around long-term and won’t disappear on you overnight.

In the coming issues of The Hub we will be covering tips and advice on websites, search engine optimization and general computer issues. Broxden provide web design and IT support services. Tel: 01738 450422. Email [email protected]. www.broxden.co.uk

Blairgowrie Rugby Players Cycle For Cancer Charity

Blairgowrie Rugby Club’s Peter Ireland and Sandy McCurdy are to throw off their

boots and pick up their bikes in a charity ride on behalf of the Maggie’s Centre in Dundee.

With both of their families having been affected by cancer, the two caring guys, who have been friends for 35 years, decided to do something different to help raise finds for the charity. They have therefore decided to cycle

from Arbroath to Fort William, a distance of around 150 miles, over the 26th and 27th August across a very hilly and difficult route.

Blairgowrie Rugby Club started them off with a donation of £200 but if anyone else wishes to donate you can do so through the Just Giving website on http:www.just-giving.com/Sandy-McCurdy or by calling Peter on 07979 517297.

David Hay has been selected as the team captain for The Rest of the World team and Blair Atholl’s Eve Muirhead will skip one of the Team World teams with team mates Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams and Claire

The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart

MP, Member of Parliment for Perth and North Perthshire and Mr John Swinney MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire North, have welcomed the anounced of awards totalling £2,995 from Big Lottery Fund’s 2014 Communities programme for two organisations in their constituencies.

Mr Wishart said: “Well done to both Jeanfield Swifts and Perth PLUS in securing this funding which I am sure will be put to very good use.

“It is great to see these two grassroots football

schemes gaining funding as part of the programme deigned to build a legacy of well-being throughout Scotland before and beyond the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in 2014. What a contrast to the giant money pit that is the London Olympics which has actually been sucking money in from good causes and grassroots sport.”

Mr Swinney added: “Both groups have been awarded funds to assist with their footballing activities. This shows the importance of sport to young people and adults of all abilities.

“In the run-up to the

Commonwealth Games in 2014, I know that so many groups and individuals will be gearing up to cash in on the benefits that the games will deliver.

“As I have stated previously, I would encourage my constituents to take part or volunteer in sport and physical activity. These grants awarded will help to do just that.”

Prestigious event destined to be pinnacle of racing calendar

With just over one week to go until Perth Racecourse hosts its biggest and best ever racing event, excitement is building

rapidly for the forthcoming Charities Race Day in support of The Prince’s Charities in Scotland.

Charities Race Day, which will take place on Saturday 20th August, has gathered enormous momentum since it was first an-nounced and is successfully accumulating a number of promising credentials. Not only is it set to attract record crowds, but the Charities Race Day is also the most valuable raceday ever to be staged at the Scone track and will offer the highest prize fund in Perth Racecourse’s history. In addition, this fixture will attract Perth Racecourse’s most distinguished guests in recent times – namely Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Rothe-say and the First Minister, Alex Salmond.

Demonstrating that Perth Racecourse’s forthcoming fixture is expected to be the pinnacle of the racing calendar, the race day aims to raise a six figure sum for The Prince’s Charities in Scot-land - a group of not-for-profit organisations of which His Royal

Highness is President.Having supported the fixture from its inception, Alex Salmond

greatly welcomes the event and comments, “I am delighted to be involved with the Perth Charities Race Day, which is shaping up to be the biggest event ever held at the racecourse and one of the signature dates in this year’s Scottish sporting calendar.

“It is incredible to see how this event has grown from a conver-sation I had with The Prince, into a spectacular day of racing and other activities that will draw a record crowd of 15,000 and bring significant benefits to the local economy. “Thanks to the hard work of the organisers and the generosity of a variety of sponsors, we are on track to see a number of charities receive substantial donations and the richest ever prize fund in Perth Racecourse’s history. Central to the day will be the £40,000 Scottish Hydro Summer Champion Hurdle, with the magnificent trophy that I am pleased to be unveiling today. “As a racing fan, I am thrilled to be attending on the day itself and I look forward to participating in the full range of events on offer.

With Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in attendance, it promises to be a fantastic day out, and I encourage people from all across Scotland to come along and join in the fun.”

The Charities Race Day, which is supported by Scottish Hydro, will feature eight competitive races from some of the UK’s top names in horseracing, all of whom will compete for prize money that is expected to top £90,000 – the highest prize fund in Perth Racecourse’s history.

In addition to the usual horse racing, the fixture will also feature camel racing, a sport more commonly associated with the Middle East than Perthshire!Clothed in fantastically colourful Arabian style outfits, the camel racing will not only present an entertaining addition to the Perth Racecourse Charities Day, but will also be an eye-catching addi-tion, providing pzazz to this prestigious event.

The camel racing will accompany other additional entertainment including a pipe band display from the Scots DG Pipe and Drums, with a white charger in attendance as well as an evening concert.
