School Direct

2014-15 Cohort Update: Our School Direct cohort had a very successful PGCE year. At the end of the academic year 95% of our School Direct cohort had gained employment. Of the 37 NQT posts, 22 of these are in UoM partnership schools – 14 of which are specifically SD partner schools. All except 2 of the 37 posts are placed in the North-West. 2015-16 Cohort: We are enjoying developing very successful relationships with our School Direct 2015-16 partners and our growing partnership. There has been more cross-alliance training this year, which is working well and the experiences that our trainees are being offered by alliances are varied and exciting, as well as the reported development of partner school staff CPD. Our alliance ‘planning day’ in May 2015 received very positive feedback from alliance leads and this supported schools to develop their alliance led training in line with the UoM requirements. Much good practice was shared and this has really supported the shaping and strengthening of this for our current cohort. Next year and beyond: We look forward to welcoming two new School Direct alliance groups to work with us next academic year. If you would like to find out more about the School Direct primary programme generally or are interested in forming an ‘alliance’ of schools and working with our primary programme for 2017-18 then please contact the admin team as the timescales for applications begin very shortly. 2015 NQT Survey Results – Well Done and Thanks! Last years students appear to be doing very well as NQTs so best wishes to them and their employing schools. We just have the DfE NQT annual survey data in which asks about student satisfaction with the PGCE programme. Across all areas the programme has scored highly so thanks to everyone in schools, at the University and of course the hard working class of 2014-15! In most sections we have improved on previous years and score higher than many other providers of initial teacher training e.g. overall quality of training received 100% good and very good. Aspects which we feel could be further improved include:

- preparing students to teach SEND; - preparing students to teach EAL; - dealing with parents; - behavior management.

Inner-Manchester Cluster Research The Primary PGCE team is delighted to have the opportunity to work in new collaborative ways with teachers in Manchester and we are currently piloting a 'Research Cluster' model approach to our partnership with the Inner Manchester cluster. Our project commenced on the 18th September, and teachers from partnership schools in the Inner Manchester cluster were invited to attend sessions to prepare them for undertaking research-based teacher enquiry with our trainees. We are excited to have the opportunity to enable trainees to develop skills and knowledge through collaboration on authentic tasks, whilst also developing the research expertise of teachers in our partnership schools. We are very much looking forward to working in innovative ways with our partner schools and trainees.

If other schools or clusters are interested in this approach please talk to your University tutor.
