In an effort to show our commitment to living drug free, the students, faculty and staff at Pine Forest Elementary will continue this tradition by celebrating Red Ribbon Week, October 29

th – November 2

nd. We will have many

activities at school that will help spread our message of: “One School, One Goal ~ Bully and Drug Free!” We ask that you take time to reinforce positive, healthy choices for life at home.

History of Red Ribbon Week

In 1985, the assassination of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent Enrique Camarena enraged many Americans. Young students in his hometown began wearing red ribbons in his memory. The message of the red ribbons was simple: “Take a stand against the loss of life and energy to drug abuse.” That message and its symbol, the red ribbon, spread rapidly. In 1988, the National Family Partnership took the Red Ribbon celebration nationwide. Since then, Red Ribbon Week has been listed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a National health observance and has been touching millions of children, families, and communities across the Nation. The week calls upon all citizens to become aware of the drug problems in their communities and to show their support and commitment by wearing a Red Ribbon.

"Keep Kingwood Green Club" needs our help to collect JUNK ELECTRONICS! Their goal is to collect 500,000 pounds of electronic waste between now and November 15. Next Collection Date: Sat. November 3 Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Where: Kingwood Metro Park and Ride lot What: *All electronics and small appliances. * There are no restrictions on the amount you bring in and there is no charge to you! *If it has electrical wires and is not a large appliance they will probably take it. Why: *To keep these items out of our landfills. Many of these items have valuable resources that can be recycled into new products. *To train and employ disabled people in our area.

This year, PFE will be supporting a Service Learning project founded by two fifth grade students at Lakeland Elementary. These two students have taken great initiative from reading an article about UNICEF on children who do not have the opportunity in other countries to get an education. Only donations provide these kids with the opportunity to attend school. PFE students will have the opportunity to support this initiative through participating in the Pay to Play Storybook Character Dress-Up Day. Support this service learning project by paying $1.00 to wear your storybook character costume to school on Wednesday, October 31st at PFE. Donations will be delivered to Lakeland Elementary on November 1st.

Madelyn's artwork will take center stage as the front cover of our yearbook. Our runners up, Kendall Keating (4th grade), Lucy Sullivan (3rd grade), Annabelle Shrader (2nd grade), Jennifer Le (1st grade) & Samantha Soto (Kindergarten) will have their artwork displayed on the back cover. We had 6 students receive honorable mentions, they will also be featured inside this year's yearbook.
