this time we celebrate the feasts of saints Peter and Paul,

our own patronal day.

2. Our church has stood for centuries past, its pealing bells we hear;

and choirs singing joyfully, will fill our hearts with cheer.

we thank you as we pray.

4. Today old customs here are kept,

the aisles are strewn with hay; and window sills aglow with flowers,

as we rejoice today.

Prayer of Penitence

Jesus said to his apostles, ‘You are my friends if you obey my commands.’

Let us now confess our disobedience to him.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you

and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed,

through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.

We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us,

Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you in their death as in their life:

grant that your Church, inspired by their teaching and example, and made one by your Spirit,

may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

¶ The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading – Acts 12.1-11

King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased

the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to

the people after the Passover. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. The very night before Herod was going to

bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly

an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’And the chains fell off his wrists.

The angel said to him, ‘Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.’He did so. Then he said to him, ‘Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.’ Peter went

out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had passed

the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked

along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, ‘Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the

hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.’

At the end of the reading

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Second Reading – 2 Timothy 4.6-8,17-18

As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have

kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day,

and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might

be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his

heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Gradual Hymn

1. We have a gospel to proclaim,

good news for all throughout the earth; the gospel of a Saviour’s name:

we sing his glory, tell his worth.

2. Tell of his birth at Bethlehem, not in a royal house or hall

but in a stable dark and dim, the Word made flesh, a light for all.

3. Tell of his death at Calvary, hated by those he came to save, in lonely suffering on the cross;

for all he loved his life he gave.

When the Gospel is announced the reader says

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John All Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,

‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He

said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are

the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but

my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the

keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’

Sermon

The Nicene Creed Stand

All We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

to those who were far off and those who were near.

Offertory Hymn

1. Lord of the Church, we pray for our renewing: Christ over all, our undivided aim.

Fire of the Spirit, burn for our enduing, wind of the Spirit, fan the living flame!

We turn to Christ amid our fear and failing, the will that lacks the courage to be free,

the weary labours, all but unavailing, to bring us nearer what a church should be.

2. Lord of the Church, we seek a Father’s blessing,

a true repentance and a faith restored, a swift obedience and a new possessing,

filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord! We turn to Christ from all our restless striving,

unnumbered voices with a single prayer: the living water for our souls’ reviving,

in Christ to live, and love and serve and care.

3. Lord of the church, we long for our uniting, true to one calling, by one vision stirred;

to praise his glory, risen and ascended, Christ over all, the everlasting King!

Preparation of the Table

The gifts of the people are gathered and presented. The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it.

Father, accept all we bring before you this day.

Guide us with your love and feed us at your table as you nourish the faith of the Church

by the preaching of your apostles Peter and Paul. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Lord be with you. All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Lord of all life, you created the universe,

where all living things reflect your glory.

You give us this great and beautiful earth,

because you formed your Church on the apostles

to stand firm for ever,

as a sign on earth of your infinite holiness

and the living gospel for all to hear.

'This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me.'

After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine,

So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life.

As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit,

and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Saviour.

Help us, Father, to love one another,

as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended,

and all creation is gathered in your loving arms.

And now with all your saints we give you glory,

through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit,

Prayer after Communion

Lord God, the source of truth and love, keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,

united in prayer and the breaking of bread, and one in joy and simplicity of heart,

in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice.

Walk Rutland calls us to walk together

and share fellowship as we walk through the villages of Rutland. It is an

opportunity to talk about God with friends and strangers. Walk Rutland is

supporting the Churches that already exist in the villages, and we hope that they will engage with us in witness. The

fortnight starts with a commissioning service at Hambleton Church on

17 August at 2:30pm, and ends with a celebration service at Uppingham

Methodist Church on 31 August at 2:30pm.

stewarding, support driver, banner carrying and for leading

Cancellation

It is with regret that the organisers have announced that the 'Art for

Hearts Sake' art show 4-6 July in Langham Church has had to be

cancelled due to insufficient entries.

Sales for May amounted to a healthy

£172.06. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to look and buy.
