FIGURE 1: Different stages of the refinery process of crude oil.
A growing industryWhat is oil? We hear about it almost every day in the news. People around the world are very concerned with the price of oil; countries are concerned with obtaining a secure supply of oil. The oil industry has reached an unquestionable importance in the global economy.
The importance of petroleum to mankind took a giant leap in the late 1800’s when it replaced coal as the primary fuel for the machines of the industrial revolution. In today’s industrialized society, petroleum means power. It has enabled civilization as we know it today. Petroleum provides the mechanical power to run machines and industries.
These days, the global demand for petroleum, natural gas, biofuels and petrochemicals is increasing every day. Companies are challenged to carry out safe, reliable and efficient processes to ensure that consumers receive a consistent flow of high quality products. It is a long way from crude oil to the countless products made from it.
The industrial refining processes are demanding and Scharlau contributes to the petrochemical industry by providing high quality products to achieve the most accurate results at the Quality Control laboratory.
Scharlau: Technology, knowledge and supportScharlau is aware of the analytical needs of the various stages of processing crude. Therefore our petrochemical analysis solutions focus on the diverse techniques applied in the different processing steps.

Application of the Scharlau portfolio to different parameters We describe below some of the parameters of the previous chart that can be analyzed with Scharlau chemicals according to their respective analytical techniques.
Acid and base number
The accurate measurement of acid and base in lubrication fluids is critical in determining when an oil is losing its ability to protect engine or pump components from corrosion. The great importance of the T.A.N. (Total Acid Number) or T.B.N. (Total Base Number) determinations is evident in many standards and regulations. However they differ in the titrants used, the exact composition of the solvent mixtures and the evaluation procedures. The T.A.N. indicates the quantity of KOH, which is necessary to neutralize the acidic contents in the oil. The T.B.N. indicates the quantity of contents with alkaline effects (such as additives) that can neutralize acid forming impurities or combustion products. Both parameters are determined by potentiometric titration in non-aqueous solvents or solvent mixtures.Scharlau offers high-quality mixtures for determination of T.A.N. and T.B.N. For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.

Sulphur
Crude oil contains sulphur typically in concentrations from 0.5 mass % to 5.0 mass %. Sulphur is one of the critical elements in refinery processes and final products.Sulphur compounds occur in various types and quantities in hydrocarbon feedstocks and refined products, including gasoline, diesel and many other fuels and materials. For determining hydrogen sulphide and mercaptans in liquid hydrocarbons, the sample is titrated with silver nitrate solution, whereby silver sulphide and silver mercaptide are produced. For sulphur measurement, volumetric solutions are required.Scharlau offers a wide range of volumetric solutions and secondary standards Titrasure®, manufactured with the utmost precision. Scharlau volumetric solutions are guaranteed to a factor of 1.000 and are traceable to NIST.For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.
Bromine number and bromine index
The Bromine number is useful as a correlated measure of aliphatic unsaturation in petroleum samples and can be used to estimate the percentage of olefins in petroleum distillates boiling up to 327°C (626°F). The Bromine Index provides a measure of trace amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons in petroleum distillates having boiling points up to 288°C (550°F). An estimate of the quantity of these materials is useful in assessing the suitability of the lighter fractions for use as reaction solvents. Scharlau offers high quality specific solutions for the determination of Bromine number and index. For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.

Water determination according to Karl Fischer
The presence of water in petroleum products may cause a reduction of lubricant properties, promote microbial oil degradation and promote corrosion of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, not only in the product but also in the tank. Because of the low water content in petroleum products, the Karl Fischer coulometric method is usually the method of choice due to its higher accuracy. 1. Aliphatic and aromatic petroleum components: coulometric titration is used due to the low content of water. 2. Hydraulics, insulation, transformer and turbine oils: the use of a coulometric titration with a diaphragm cell is recommended. Solubilizers (chloroform or trichloroethylene) must be used because of the poor solubility of such oils in methanol.
By using Scharlau’s Aquagent® products for Karl Fischer titration it is possible to determine the water content in petroleum products with very stable end-points, rapidly and accurately. Aquagent® is a comprehensive pyridine-free range of solutions, providing reliable Karl Fischer titrations with increased safety. For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.

Saponification number
The Saponification value of oil is defined as the number of mg of potassium hydroxide (KOH) required to neutralize the fatty acids resulting from the complete hydrolysis of 1 g of sample. The Saponification value gives us an indication of the molecular weight of oil. In order to measure the Saponification Number, volumetric solutions are required.Scharlau offers a wide range of volumetric solutions and secondary standards Titrasure®, manufactured with the utmost precision. Scharlau volumetric solutions are guaranteed to a factor of 1.000 and are traceable to NIST.For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.
Hydroxyl number
The Hydroxyl number indicates the mg of potassium hydroxide, which correspond to the hydroxyl groups in 1g of the sample. The most frequently used method is the conversion of the sample with acetic acid anhydride in pyridine, with subsequent titration of the released acetic acid. This method determines the number of hydroxyl groups present under the test conditions. The most frequently described method for determining the hydroxyl number is conversion of the sample with acetic acid anhydride in pyridine with subsequent titration of the released acetic acid. Acids and bases are required for the measurement of this parameter.Scharlau offers a wide range of Acids and Bases for the analysis of the Hydroxyl number. For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.

Chloride and organically bound chlorine
Organic chloride species are potentially damaging to the refinery process. Hydrochloric acid can be produced in hydrotreating or reforming reactors resulting in acid accumulating in condensing regions of the refinery. Unexpected concentrations of organic chlorides cannot be effectively neutralized and damage can result. Prior to measurement, the sample is freed of sulphur compounds and inorganic chlorides. The organically bound chlorine is converted to NaCl with metallic sodium in toluene. After extraction into the aqueous phase the NaCl is titrated potentiometrically with a silver nitrate solution. Solvents and volumetric solutions are required for the measurement of this parameter. Scharlau offers a wide range of volumetric solutions and secondary standards Titrasure®, manufactured with the utmost precision. Scharlau volumetric solutions are guaranteed to a factor of 1.000 and are traceable to NIST.Scharlau also provides a broad family of high quality solvents in different grades: reagent grade/ACS, extra pure and synthesis grade, in a wide range of sizes to meet the needs of any customer. For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.
Inorganic and low-molecular organic ions
The ion chromatography technique is able to accurately determinate different ions at low concentrations in fuels, lubricating oils, gas-washing solutions and what is referred to as “Produced Water”.Anions and cations in “Produced Water”: produced water is a by-product of crude oil drilling containing large amounts of inorganic cations including calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium as well as anions such as carbonate, bromide and sulphate. The piping may be affected by scaling and, even worse, may be blocked. Hence, the determination of these anions and cations is of vital importance to achieve a correct production process. Scharlau offers a wide range of Inorganic Reagents and Conductivity Standards for the analysis of anions and cations. For more information, please refer to the section “Ordering information” of this brochure.
