Founded in 1971, Petrobras Distribuidora is a Petróleo Brasileiro subsidiary responsible for marketing and distribution of petroleum products throughout Brazil. By 1974, the company held the position as the country’s largest distributor.

Today the company has 7,500 service stations – the single largest network of stations across the country – with more than 4,000 employees and more than 10,000 large customers, drawn from industries spanning manufacturing, power plants, aviation and vehicle fl eets.

Petrobras Distribuidora’s 2014 to 2018 business plan forecasts that fuel demand in 2018 will be 20 percent higher than that recorded in 2013. In this eventuality, the company is keen to retain its 37percent market share, matching market growth and increasing profi tability.

The main role of the IT department at Petrobras Distribuidora is to cost-effectively meet the company’s information and automation needs. This involves managing resources, data, networks and telephony and enabling the business to make fast, informed decisions that help increase productivity and effi ciency.

Carlos Marcelo Bianchi, Environmental Architect of Petrobras Distribuidora’s Business Portal, deployed early versions of CA Application Performance Management in 2011 and was pleased with the fi rst results: “Even with little knowledge of the solution and without training, I was able to extract a more detailed view of the behavior of the desktop components and applications. Previously, we only had basic CPU data, memory and logs; since then, we have been evolving so we can anticipate problems based on the behavior of applications.”

In order to extend the benefi ts to the company’s other critical systems and to provide broader monitoring, Leonardo Martins, IT Analyst at Petrobras Distribuidora, led the CA Application Performance Management implementation project for external environments. The goal was to aggregate more information from the same event, connecting the behavior of different systems with the user experience.

CA Application Performance Management now has approximately 20 users, and has enabled Petrobras Distribuidora to address a number of issues, including slow external systems. “When there is a slowdown in an environment such as SAP, for example, we can now warn our internal client proactively, long before the user perceives any problems. This builds trust,” says Raphael Menezes.

With the implementation of CA Application Performance Management, Petrobras Distribuidora’s IT Department now has customized technical monitoring dashboards for each of its technology teams, which enables them to monitor the status of services. System Analysts such as Raphael Menezes also rely on a business dashboard in CA Application Performance Management where the availability rate of the most critical transactions can be viewed.

“With alerts issued at the fi rst sign of trouble, we have reduced troubleshooting time and the number of problems in the production environment,” says Menezes.

In particular, this has reduced the time required to resolve incidents in the SAP environment.

On the customer side, CA Application Performance Management alerts the Customer Service Center in advance about problems, which prevents call queues and safeguards system availability. “CA Application Performance Management enables us to anticipate the consequences of a problem in the production environment, thereby reducing resource requirements for root cause analysis,” adds Menezes.

Other benefi ts achieved using CA Application Performance Management include:

• The ability to analyse resource allocation, simplifying capacity management

• A 90 per cent reduction in the monthly volume of incidents in the production environment

• Faster resource allocation at the Customer Service Center.
