Tips of the Month – How to protect your Petrel projects from saving with a newer version of Petrel?

Soon, you will be installing Petrel 2007.1, and you will probably keep some of your Petrel 2005 projects active. If you open your project directly (using the Project Name icon), Petrel 2007.1 will be launched automatically and if you save, you will be automatically converting the 2005 project into a 2007.1. Should you wish to protect your 2005 project from newer version, open Petrel 2005 and your project, you can go under Project Settings / Settings 1/ and select the option on the top “Protect from overwrite by a newer version of Petrel”.

Should you open your project by mistake with Petrel 2007.1, you won’t be able to save it and Petrel will give you a warning message like above “The project can not be saved by a newer version of Petrel, Do you want to save it to another location”, so it will automatically create a new copy, which will protect your Petrel 2005 project from upgrading to 2007.1.

Highlight of the Month – More extended Data Management in Petrel 2007.1

Petrel user Petrel active project Petrel non active project

Last month, we introduced the Petrel Reference Project. This month, we would like to present more extended tools for Data Management in Petrel. The Reference Project Tool in Petrel is ideal for transferring and sharing data amongst several users (Asset Team for example), but if you want to manage all your Petrel projects available on your network (from all users in your company, usually 100s projects), you will need more advanced data management tools. This new tool, introduced last year is called PROSOURCE and will allow you or your Data Management team to:

- Archive all your Petrel projects from your Network - Publish the content of each project - Compare projects together - Retrieve data

Should you need more information about ProSource, please contact your Schlumberger representative

This is a Process Manager improvement from Petrel 2007.1, but has great application in the automation of plotting. Earlier versions of Petrel had a user-definable reference list, which could be used in a “for all icons in list” looping workflow. This has been expanded and now the list can have several columns containing different objects. A good example is the need to plot all the key horizons in a model, together with their associated faults and tops. A workflow is created with a line for every associated set of objects. The workflow shown below plots all the horizons in the list, together with their faults and tops.
