Peter Lindhberg- Portrait

Purpose

The photograph was probably for a fashion show or fashion exhibition in order to promote a type of style or trend. Income would be generated from the fashion show because it would have a lot of media attention, as well as models who work to advertise this style.

Composition and framing

The woman’s body is in centre focus in terms of framing, with the face being in the higher quadrant of the frame. The position of her slouching body shows the fact that the image is natural and there isn’t a pose to it. I believe that her body is the central focus because she is trying to tell a story with it, rather than her face. The audience’s eyes are automatically focused onto the body and then draws up towards the face, supporting the idea of the body telling the story and the face following on.

Image analysisThe bandage type-clothing item she has on is the brightest colour in the image, indicating where the audience’s attention should be. The use of dark lighting is successful because It relates to the story of her and what she is trying to portray. Her background is very dark almost suggesting that she has emerged from the darkness. The light bandage around her body is covering and sheltering her from

the darkness, which could represent her purity that the darkness is following. There is some light on the right side of the face, which has been purposely added to show the sunlight. There is also a focus of light on her hand with the cigarette, which could indicate that the cigarette is her chance of hope.

Meaning

The meaning behind the photo could be that her past is full of darkness which is represented by the black lighting in the back and she is looking for a new way out which is shown by her looking out the window and the light bandage that is wrapped around her. The woman depends on the cigarette to relieve her from the sad past of her life, which is again shown by the lighting. Her facial expression almost shows a dazed and lost from reality look where she is concentrating on something else, perhaps to think of other things instead of the darkness behind her.

Purpose

Again I feel that the photo was taken for a fashion show or magazine to express the idea of beauty or a desirable look. This is portrayed in the fact that she isn’t wearing any clothes and her face and body is very naturally shown.

Composition and framing

The framing is traditional portrait and has a central focus of her body and chest area. The audience is drawn to her body first and the face follows as a type of back up for the story, with her head being in the highest quadrat. Overall she is in the centre of the frame, and looking directly into the lens. This makes it more sensitive to the audience as she is directly telling her story.

Image analysis

The woman’s left side is a lot brighter on her body and face, which could show that her past was brighter than her present because the right side seems to be more facing towards the camera. The shadowed light on the right side of her face is quite dark on her cheeks and shoulders, perhaps indicating the weight she carries on her shoulders.

Meaning

Her present seems darker than the present because the light behind her is focused on the back half of the image. There is a true natural beauty about the girl, where she is exposing her real self and perhaps telling people what has happened to her. She has an innocent and natural beauty about her that shows a sense of vulnerability in the look of her. Her natural body as well is slouching down, almost showing she wants to cover herself and protect herself.

Kevin Corrado- Surrealism

Purpose

The purpose of this image could represent the idea of a person being in between two pathways, or the idea of an individual being stuck in a dead end route. The image shows a road curving on the side where the yellow lines aren’t present, maybe showing that the person has little time left.

Composition and framing

Surrealist images have unique composition and framing because they all have separate messages. This image has the centre focus on the arm and yellow lines, showing that the message behind the individual is the key message. The arm is composed in a way that shows an accident has occurred, because it is relaxed and not tensed purposely.

Image analysis

Overall there is a white glow in the path above the yellow lines, which could imply that the person has gone to a better place. The deep black shadow curves around the white glowed road, suggesting that there is darkness in the outside world that can overpower the light. The yellow lines aren’t harsh and have a blurred imperfection to them, where they are not perfectly strait, again indicating that imperfect and rough life.

Meaning

Surrealism has an individual interpretation for everyone, and my perspective is about seeing someone who is depressed and feels trapped in life. The double yellow lines in society mean that you are not allowed to park there, however this person is blatantly on them indicating that the person is somewhere they shouldn’t be. The fact that the arm is so relaxed and implies someone who has had an accident could lead to the idea of someone who took a bad road and died as a result.

Purpose

The purpose of this image is to inspire and show other people that there is more to what meets the eye. The board that the image is showing could mean that amongst something isolated is a whole other chapter to be revealed. This could generate income for a holiday campaign or for a travel magazine.

Composition and framing

The wooden frame is the central focus of the image, with the rule of thirds having the wooden frame in the centre. The train tracks are in the lower quadrant and the trees and glimpse of sky in the higher sections of the quadrant. The two boys are both equally on the left and right side of the quadrant. This is effective because there is an equal share of the boys who both have a half of the picture each.

Image analysis

There is a focus of light in the sky which could mean that the sky is what is leading the way. The broken piece in the frame, which has the sea, shows a bright light that draws focus to it. There are glances of light on the boys bodies but they have more of a shadow on them, along with the trees which have shadows on them to symbolise a darker outside world.

Meaning

The meaning behind this shows two boys looking for an escape and looking for a different type of scene. It could also mean that there are two boys who are working towards moving away from whatever they want to leave behind. They are carrying a broken board that seems to have a new way forward. The fact the

two boys look very similar and are dressed the same might represent the idea of the two being family and even twins. The train tracks clearly indicate the idea of new paths and travelling. The image could also mean that the new hope for going to this new landscape is the only thing that is keeping the two boys together, as their train tracks are separate and leading to different routes.

War photography- Phillips Jones Griffiths

Purpose

I believe that the photo was taken to show the damages of what war can do and how it can corrupt even the innocent. This kind of image could be shown in a World War art gallery, which could be themed around war photographers and their different styles. It could also be seen in a newspaper, to show what is going on in the world and alerting the public of how children’s lives are after being effected from war. Using this photo as part of a charity and therefore raising money for the charity could generate income. If the photo was used in journalism such as newspapers, it could gain income by people having an interest in this topic.

Composition and framing

The rock in the child’s hand is in the highest part of the quadrant, showing that what the rock symbolises is the key message of this image. The boy is located on the centre left side of the quadrant, which shows a focus onto what he’s throwing the rock on. What the boy is standing on is on the lower centre half of the quadrant, which also draws attention because it acts as the base and almost gives stability to the picture. The boys face has a dimmed light to it but not much, representing the darkness that has overtaken things.

Image analysis

The photo is in black white, which gives it an obvious old fashioned/ style theme to it. The colours around the boy are lighter, such as the sky, whereas the boy’s colours are more dark and dimmed. All natural lighting is used, because it has been taken from outside. There is no costume of the boy because he is in his own habitat living how his life is. His clothes are a blazer and trousers, perhaps suggesting that he had a wealthy background. The other children in the image appear to be less privileged than him, as they are not taking control or showing any dominance.

Meaning

My understanding on the meaning of this image is that war ruins a child’s innocence and sense of childhood. There is also a sense of abolishment in ranking and class, which is represented by the different types of children there, shown by their clothing. There is a sense of togetherness and people being together despite their rank, because the situation is terrifying. The meaning of the innocence being destroyed comes from the child wanting to destroy things with what is in his hand, mirroring the idea of what he must have saw on the streets and on the TV. The landscape of ruins in the background ends the idea of hope and any place of happiness for that child.

Purpose

The purpose of this image is to again inform people on war and show people the discomfort and dramatic change people have to undergo. This image may be publicised on TV, in a newspaper or even billboard. It can also be shown in a war museum or in a Vietnam War focussed exhibition. It could generate income by selling it to be publicised or to be involved in a charity advertisement.

Composition and framing

The photo overall is very busy and it contains a lot of information. The woman is slightly of f focus of the centre of the quadrant, but the eye still draws to her belongings and herself. In the left and right of the quadrant, soldiers and ruins are all visible which contributes to what the message truly conveys. I think that the focus is lightly off the girl because it represents how her life is now off focus and there isn’t a perfect centre focus on her because she has this hard difficult life that is far from perfect.

Image analysis

This photo has been shot from natural lighting and there is not artificial lighting added to the photo, representing this in the moment and imperfect idea. There a focus points where the lighting catches more, such as her clothing and any areas of white. There are no costumes in this image because the photographer is capturing the true reality of their lives. The traditional soldiers uniform shows the idea of danger, as well as the number of soldiers in the image. The destroyed environment in the surroundings tells the viewer about the horrors that this woman much have faced.

Meaning

The meaning of this photo is showing that despite the destruction that surrounds someone, that individual can always move on from it, which is shown by her collection of her belongings. Although her home and town has been shattered, she has still collected the courage to gather her belongings and move somewhere else, showing how she is fighting her trauma. The soldiers represent the idea of safety but also command and control from the government. The fact that there are many of them represents the idea of being outnumbered as well, that there are more soldiers who have survived compared to civilians, because they have chosen to fight.
