This project consists of 20 artist studios with a community commons comfortable for individual contemplation or a gathering for one-hundred people.To create a sense of community and place, the studios are conceived as a “forest of lanterns” along the slope of the Watertown Arsenal. Each of the five lanterns, or towers, consist of four studios and an open gallery space. Studios are organized according to their programmatic needs - photography lab in the ground, painting in the sky!

The towers begin to fold and bend to blur the boundary between interior and exterior, claiming outdoor work space for their respective tenants. Materials reflect the play of interior and exterior Charred wood absorbs light outside of the community to contrast the interior facades, which offer a lighter wood that enhances lantern light.
Modulations of a similar lantern language create a greater sense of diversity and individuality among the five towers. The tight geometries created by the interior facades form a community space nested between towers. The base of each tower is anchored to the subterranean community space - a horizontal link between the verticals.

Arlington National Cemetery30 acres with 15000 sf chapel
Passage of Time investigated how architecture reflects physical, spatial, and ritualistic aspects of time through a study of diverse burial scales and the specific rituals of Arlington. The thesis proposed new burials and a memorial chapel to the south of the cemetery near the Pentagon and Air Force Memorial. In response to these dominant monuments, the scale of burials are increased, but still reflect the existing “fields of stones.” Thus, the new stones represent not one soldier, but a community of individuals who have increasingly shouldered the burden of war.

The chapel celebrates sacrifice by crafting a visual corridor towards the Pentagon with the void between two chapels of varying scales. The sizes reflect a desire to accommodate the frequency of funerals performed at Arlington for both immediate families and larger gatherings. The adjacent reflecting pool provides a precinct for quiet contemplation within the monumental national cemetery.

This one week design charrette mandated the use of shipping containers as a medium to create new experiences for Generation-Y. The Digital Media Lab responds to the advancement in video production that has enabled GenY to invent and showcase new forms of self-expression. The linear form provides three basic parts of producing media: recording, editing, and screening, fostering an environment for creative thinkers to learn, produce, and share their lives with others. The ‘camera obscura’ quality of shipping containers compliments the intimacy of producing and consuming media.

Common Ground is a New Haven-based charter school dedicated to the cultivation of healthy living and sustainable practices. Located on an under used lot in the southern corner of the original nine-square New Haven city plan, the Common Ground school seeks to create an urban boundary that redefines the eroded corner. A four-story interior commons parallels the street and links the library, classrooms, and multi-purpose space. The library and multi-purpose spaces are conceived as nondescript objects on the exterior, but carved on the interior to define scale and filter light.

The objective of this furniture design course was to craft an end table confined to a 30” cube maximum dimension. “The Plane” is conceived as a long 1.75” thick board of Cherry that has been “folded” to define shelving space. The construct derives its harmonic form from the golden ratio, and tapers at each end to signify a definite beginning and end. An extension of the lower shelf allows the table to be rotated 90 degrees as a coffee table, providing flexibility of function for the user.

The sketches on the upper right are selections of various atria visited during a Sustainable Insights study abroad course in Stuttgart and Munich. The course primarily focused on envelope construction and energy efficient design. Other drawings are products of Construction, Materials, and Assemblies coursework. The models opposite highlight graduate studies in material, form, and historical precedent.
