01. Deep Ellum Theater Deep Ellum is a neighborhood of Dallas, Texas that thrived in the early 20th century thanks to the cotton gin factory, the automobile industry, jazz, and dance. Due to World War II, the neighbor-hood shortly started to fall apart and people moved away. To make matters worse, the city built an express way that cut through Deep Ellum thus obliterating what was left. In the late 1900s, the neighborhood came back to life through the reintroduc-tion of music, art, clubs, bars, etc. Old ware-houses were turned into apartments, venues, and art galleries. Deep Ellum is once again bursting with activity and music. The goal of the theater is to help reconnect with the history of Deep Ellum by providing a venue that is also flexible with its program, which echoes the familiar sounds the neighborhood once knew. The 250 seat theater can accom-modate theater plays, small dance perfor-mances, music concerts, business meet-ings, movie projections, etc. Each story is open to the outdoors and reinforce the connection between the neighborhood. One can be in the building, and yet, still be a part of the lively surroundings.

02. The Billboard Project: Parasitic Architecture

The site is an unused billboard structure adjacent to a two lane highway. The billboard serves as a live-work shelter and is composed of a sleeping space, a food prepa-ration space, storage, a bath-room, and an office space. The intent of the design is to offer great views of the surrounding landscape with the use of glass, while protecting from the harsh rays of the Texas sun by using an aluminum skin system comprised of louvers. This project was completed as a second year student.

03. The Menil Extension The project is a 4,000 ft2 exten-sion to Houston’s Menil Collection and has for goal to accommodate the museum’s drawing collection. The program specially calls for a drawing gallery with natural diffuse light, and a blackout gallery for light sensitive drawings.

The idea of the project is to provide different experi-ences to the viewers by creating different light quali-ties. The horizontal louvers in the drawing gallery filter light and distribute it evenly. The second floor has clerestory windows that allow less light to penetrate the space. This area is a threshold between the gallery and the blackout gallery where artificial light-ing lights up the drawings.

04. The Floating Boathouse The floating boathouse is situated on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. With its 600 ft2 facility, it provides a platform both for the launching and mooring of kayaks. The program has an office for renting equipment, a storage space for kayaks and spaces for diving into the water. The idea of the project is to give a sense of monumentality to the boathouse so it becomes a landmark, and a beacon to the visitors passing by.

05. Bathouse The Bathouse is a second year project located at Barton Springs in Austin, Texas. The scope of the project involved analyzing the context of the site from topography to natural features to social conditions, and designing a 11,000 ft2 bathouse. The program includes an office, lockers, rinsing areas, storage, bathrooms, a main pool, a hot plunge, a cold plunge, four therapy rooms, a steam room, a dry sauna, a sun room, and a mechanical room. The intent of my design is to create distinct outdoor bathing spaces, and circulation areas around the river. Light is a crucial element in the design as it is used both to guide the user through the building, and create different lighting conditions throughout the project.
