2.1 Cross Section as Imaginary (Due 10/25)

Peter Cook (Archigram) Plug-in City: Maximum Pressure Area, project (Section)

Using your site model, program mapping, and knowledge of existing infrastructure, as a guide, create two (2) idealized section-elevation drawings that reconfigure the site, the water’s edge, and integrates programs/functions into a vertically stratified/hybridized landscape system. The section-elevation drawings should offer a measure speculation about the future while acknowledging the dimensions and contingencies of the site and your design intuition and skill. As an imaginary, the drawing reveals an idealized set of relationships distributed vertically and horizontally across the site, integrating new programs and site functions with existing infrastructure. The hybrid section-elevation is measure and to scale (ex. 1/8” = 1’) and articulated in a manner that prioritizes ground, water, social connections, structure, and the intertidal zone. Think deep, draw depth, height, and flux. Simplified Process

• Cut 2 sections through the site using you model from EX 1.4 as a guide. Include existing conditions.

o 1 section East/West at Lake Merritt channel (north of the Amtrak line) o 1 section North/South at Channel park and the alameda channel

• Modify the section drawing to integrate idealized programs from your programmatic mapping in EX 1.4

o Draw the structures, slopes, planted forms, etc that support and enables these programs

o Show how the site functions. Represent use, flux, and new relationship enabled by the assemblages in the drawing

Deliverables & Formatting

• Draw at one of these three scales 1/8” = 1’, 1/10”=1’, 1/16”=1’

• Min 24 inches (i.e. 192ft, 240ft. 384ft) • PDF format • Hybrid as necessary

Due This Wednesday (10/20)

• Location Plan showing orientation and extents of proposes cuts. • 2 schematic sections in process (analog or digital)

Complete by Monday (10/25) – We will continue to revise these through the semester.
