STOP- Take a deep breath, sitdown if possible, calm yourself andrecognize that whatever has happenedto get you here is past and cannot beundone. You are now in a survivalsituation and that means . . .

THINK- Your most important assetis your brain. Use it! Dont Panic!Think first, so you have no regrets.Move with deliberate care. Take no

action, even a foot step, until you havethought it through . . .

OBSERVE- Take a look aroundyou. Assess your situation andoptions. Take stock of your supplies, equipment, surroundings and thecapabilities of fellow survivors . . .

PLAN- Prioritize your immediateneeds and develop a plan to system-atically deal with the emergency. Makea plan. Follow your plan. Adjust yourplan only as necessary to deal with...changing circumstances.

    PRIORITIES:

    1. Medical Care2. Shelter & Fire3. Signaling & Communication4. Sustenance

DO NOT PANICStop - Think - Observe - Plan

Signal Mirror- The most basic andbest all-around signaling device. Innormal sunlight, the flash can be seenfor up to10 miles and possibly up to 50miles, depending upon atmosphericconditions. A mirror will even work onbright overcast days and withmoonlight, though with much reducedrange. See diagram below on aiming.

Whistle - A whistle blast will carryfor 1/2 to 2 miles or even more in thewilderness where your voice may onlycarry for a few hundred yards. Andyou will also be able to signal formuch longer periods of time.Repeated three blasts, the universalsignal for help.

Fire- During darkness, fire is themost effective visual means forsignaling. Build 3 fires in a triangle(the international distress signal) or ina straight line with about 25 metersbetween the fires. Build them as soonas time and the situation permit andprotect them until you need them. Ifyou are alone, maintaining 3 fires maybe difficult. If so, maintain only onesignal fire.

Smoke - During daylight, build asmoky fire to gain attention. Theinternational distress signal is three...columns of smoke. Try to create a

....color of smoke that contrasts withthe background; dark smoke against alight background and vice versa. If youpractically smother a large fire withgreen leaves, moss, or a little water, the fire will produce white smoke. Ifyou add rubber or oil-soaked rags to afire, you will get black smoke.

Ground-to-Air Signals -Makesymbols a minimum of 1 meter wideand 6 meters long. If you make themlarger, keep the same 1: 6 ratio.Ensure the signal contrasts greatlywith the ground it is on. Place it in anopen area easily spotted from the air
