To the congregation of Salem Baptist Church:

Our Lord Jesus Christ has called the church generally, and each individual believer particularly, to “make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:18-20).

The first step to making someone a disciple is for him to be a believer, and the Bible tells us that it is the gospel that is powerful for salvation (Romans 1:16-17) and that the gospel must be proclaimed and heard for faith and trust to occur (Romans 10:9-10).

My hope is that this guide will help every believer to become a disciple-making disciple of Jesus Christ, first by helping to solidify the gospel in our own heads so that it can flow freely and accurately across our lips, and second by directing our attention to the specific ways we will be a disciple and help to make disciples.

As with many things, I have not tried to re-invent the proverbial wheel, here. There is, in fact, “nothing new under the sun” and some of what you find here is my own, some I have adopted from others. I have benefited immensely from working through this material, myself, and trust that you will, too.

Assignment One:Understanding & Telling the Story

Part A: Knowing & Telling God’s Story

Use the following seven elements of a biblical presentation of God’s gospel story to write the gospel story in your own words:

ELEMENT 1: THE CHARACTER OF GOD

Disciple Making Plan 1

(Romans 1:18-20, 2:1-16, 3:22-24, Isaiah 43:6-7)

Biblical Truth: God is the just and gracious creator of all things.

Write this element of the Gospel in your own words:

God’s Story (example)…

The just and gracious God of the universe looked upon hopelessly sinful people and sent his Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to bear his wrath against sin on the cross and to show his power over sin in the resurrection, so that all who have faith in him will be reconciled to God forever.

ELEMENT 2: THE SINFULNESS OF MAN

ELEMENT 3: THE SUFFICIENCY OF CHRIST


(Romans 1:21-25, 3:9-20, 3:23, 6:23)

Biblical Truth: We are each created by God, but we are all corrupted by sin.


(Romans 3:21-26, 4:25, 5:6-10, 5:18, 8:1-4)

Biblical Truth: Jesus Christ alone is able to remove our sin and reconcile us to God through His death and resurrection. He alone satisfies the wrath of God for our sins.


ELEMENT 4: THE NECESSITY OF FAITH

ELEMENT 5: THE URGENCY OF ETERNITY

(Romans 6:23, 2 Corinthians 5:20, Hebrews 9:27; 2 Corinthians 6:1-2)

Biblical Truth: Our eternal destiny is dependent on our response to Jesus.

Biblical Truth: We are reconciled to God only through faith in Jesus. There is nothing we can do to become right with God.

ELEMENT 7: THE REWARD OF GLORY

You might remember these seven elements this way:

1) God is Holy, 2) Man is Sinful, 3) Christ is Sufficient, 4) Faith is Needed, 5) Time is Short, 6) Costs are High, 7) Rewards are Great

(1 Peter 1:18-19; Ephesians 2:8-9; Luke 9:23-24; Luke 14:26-33; John 14:15)

Biblical Truth: God paid the price for our salvation in Jesus' death; we pay the price of our own self-interest.


(Romans 8:29; 2 Corinthians 4:17-18; 1 Peter 1:2-3; Luke 12:32; 1 Corinthians 2:9; Romans 6:14)

Biblical Truth: Repentance and belief in Christ gain for the believer eternal riches in both the future and in the present.

My freshman year in college could be summed up in one word…do. I thought that if I did things ‘right’, I could earn favor with God and be accepted by Him. Then I was introduced to Jesus. By dying on the cross and rising again, he paid the penalty for my rebellion against God. I trusted in Christ and repented of my sins before a holy God.
