PERSONAL CRITICISM ABOUT THE CONSPIRATOR

There is no question that the murder of Abraham Lincoln was a conspiracy, but contemporary Americansknow little about the particulars. The makers of the sturdy drama "The Conspirator" do a public service

by illuminating a dark corner of American history.

The Conspirator opens with the enacted Lincoln assassination and it is as sad as ever. We are drawnimmediately into the drama and what is to come. That brings us to the real heart of this film: militarytrials for U.S. citizens in America. They fly in the face of the Constitution. And at the end of the film we

read that this travesty has been rectified and U.S. citizens are henceforth guaranteed a trial by their peers.

The greatest strength ofThe Conspiratoris by far it's attention to historical detail. Filmed in Savannah,

Georgia, the film has a great "authentic feel" to it. The courtroom and setting for the execution of Surrattand her three co-conspirators look amazingly like the photos and sketches of the actual locations from

that time. Even the fact that Mrs. Surratt was shielded from the blazing sun by an umbrella the morning ofher execution is included in the film. Very well done.

The film was well researched and based on historical events, which I don't have a problem with.

However, once again the emphasis causes this film's emptiness and it falls below threshold of its promise.Not because it was made on a budget of only 16 million dollars but because if it were so well researched

then why don't we get at least a peek into the minds of the conspirators and what they were up to at theSurratt boarding house?

Redford's tightlipped about these clandestine meetings, in effect, putting the actors on a short leash. I

dont think money is the reason however, but for want of a better script. The directing is wonderful; thescript, not so much.

But Redford, blessed with an electrifying cast, nobly fulfills his mission to bring alive a forgotten chapter

of American history.

contemporneos saben poco acerca de los detalles. Los creadores del drama robusta "The Conspirator"

La mayor fortaleza del conspirador es en gran medida su atencin a los detalles histricos. Rodada enSavannah, Georgia, la pelcula tiene una gran "sensacin de autenticidad" a ella. La sala y el escenario de

promesa. No porque se hizo con un presupuesto de slo 16 millones de dlares, sino porque si fuera tanbien investigado por qu no tenemos al menos una ojeada en la mente de los conspiradores y lo que

estaban haciendo en la casa de huspedes Surratt?Redford callados sobre estas reuniones clandestinas, en efecto, poner a los actores con una correa corta.

No creo que el dinero es la razn sin embargo, pero a falta de un mejor guin. La direccin esmaravillosa, el guin, no tanto.

Sin embargo, Redford, bendecido con un reparto electrizante, noble cumple con su misin de dar vida a

un captulo olvidado de la historia americana.
