Perks of procrastination

As per the popular belief, procrastinators chronically avoid difficult task or in other words

procrastination is often is a symbolical tool that is used in order to defend the inability to

pursue a particular work ("Good And Bad Procrastination." Paulgraham.com.). From my

perspective I would like to argue that procrastination is not a mere vindication in order to avoid

perennial struggles of mundane life, rather, procrastination in large part indicates the perennial

struggle that continue in the human mind. It is a struggle with self control and often it has been

seen that procrastination is useful before availing a major stepping stone (Matthiesen, Noomi.

Procrastination is a formulation for the perfectionists. It is important to understand that carpe

diem or “seizing the day” is not always necessarily a correct philosophy to follow. Although

procrastination often hinders one from achieving his or her goals and objectives and evidently

has its conflict with the time management, but procrastination has its bright side too. It is

important to understand the right time to do a particular thing. Procrastination allows one to

think before one can leap. But the importance of procrastination lies in the persuasion of

creativity that is associated with it. Procrastination allows me imagine and imagination often

ends up at the edge of any creative idea. But procrastination also hinders me from constituting

the idea in a concrete piece of work. Procrastination is not a mere tool which is used to wait for

the right opportunity or to wait till our situation improves, rather it is hoping for a better

tomorrow.

Peaks and valleys of procrastination

My personal experience says that terrible procrastinators are often the most impressive people

I know in terms of creativity. When I search for procrastination the major information is

regarding the cure of procrastination but procrastination is not always bad. Curing

procrastination is almost impossible rather it is important to focus not on how to avoid

procrastination but how to procrastinate well. Instead of working on a particular work, on what

you work on classify what type of procrastinator you are. Procrastination can be classified into

three groups depending on what one chooses to do instead of working on something. For

example one could work on nothing, something less important or something that is more

important to other mundane day to day on goings. By good procrastination I mean to avoid

errands in order to do something of prior importance. The important thing is to understand

what real procrastination is. Visiting your face book profile once in a while in your working

hours is not procrastination and this self acclaimed procrastinator often advises a real

procrastinator not to procrastinate in order to improve their ways of life. Neither the fake

procrastinators not the dictionary understand that procrastination is not merely a bad habit for

the procrastinators which they want to get rid of, it is not something optional rather it is an

unavoidable circumstance.

The life of a regular college student who is primarily under the effect of the popular culture of

late 90s often spends hours and hours doing absolutely nothing or to be more precise nothing

productive and usually start doing something at the end moment. This does not any particular

reason apart from the fact that they understand that it is possible to complete the task even if

it is done in the late hours. The post on which I am concentrating right now is taking a much

longer to finish as a procrastinator’s brain does not work in a same fashion as a regular brain as

we wonder a lot.

Why procrastinators procrastinate so much?

Procrastination is something that we all do a lot but as per the experts we should do it a lot less.

For example any idea stirs my mind I get excited about starting to materialize my idea but

before the production I procrastinate a lot and then the excitement is dimmed and I wait for a

long time. The reason for delay can be considered my research time or I am more likely to be

just lazy. A little bit of procrastination can be healthy as it offers much time to think. Now

thinking not always has to be productive. Sometimes, there is nothing going on in the mind, its

completely blank. This idea is not as simple as it sounds. The fable of the architect who

designed the most beautiful mosque did not let anyone to erect the mosque just to establish

the ideal over reality. He could not stand the fact that once the mosque is erected then it will

be subject to decay and it is better not to materialize the ideal into reality. The main idea of the

fable is that the ideal state of a thing is before it comes into existence therefore, it is better to

not be born.

The reasoning of the procrastinators can be parallel to the belief of Gnostics. One of the most

intriguing figures of early Gnosticism had faith that the highest form of divinity is in its

inexistence. This particular philosophy that the state of perfection can not be achieved through

actualization can be the driving force of procrastination. Perhaps, the procrastinators celebrate

the catastrophe of birth like Cioran.Idleness can be considered as the worst trap of popular

culture but it is possible to find a philosophical experience in its own right. If we consider the

philosophy of Camus and Sartre then it is the most difficult thing in the world is to do nothing as

Wilde commented. Greatest consummate figures of literature are the epitomes of metaphysical

quest which exemplifies ways of being human and its unusual complexity.

Procrastination and nothingness

Procrastination is often associated with idleness. Idleness eludes us with its radicalism but

procrastination is a totally different work altogether. The procrastinator contemplates the

upcoming deed and realizes its imperfections and betrays the anxiety of creation by not

creating anything. It is true that the eternal procrastination is of one single moment of

nothingness. As influenced philosophy of Camus life is in its true sense absurd and it is absence

of meaning. The obsession with meanings leads us to imposing identity to the characteristics

and we avoid the great plurality of existence. Procrastination focuses on one primary question

that is why do anything. If everything is centered on nothingness and the meaning of life is

nothing then why practice something else but nothingness. The philosophy of nothingness finds

its framework in the writings of Beckett in some of its seminal works, Waiting for Godot. The

result of doing anything is futile then it is better not to do anything. It is important the purpose

of doing anything. If the purpose is nothing then why to do anything?

Source:( "Why Procrastinators Procrastinate." HuffPost.)

If you waste time thinking about waste you can not obviously produce anything. One of the

many issues of why we procrastinate is nothingness. Italians have a concept which is La Dolce

Far Niente meaning the sweetness of doing nothing. As Kundera mentioned the essence of

every experience is insignificance. Procrastinators are often more creatively productive than the

doers. A rational decision maker would always have a third party in its brain. And the third

party often argues affirming procrastination. If this third party is a gratification monkey, a

Lucifer or a wise alterego that emphasizes on thinking more is upto the rational decision maker.

In a world where we are the passive actors like Stoppard’s supernumerary characters like

Rosenberg and Guildenstine, we reject reality. The reality as Camus suggested is to go on and to

experience the anguish of reality. If someone is procrastinating on the immediate task then he

or she is wisely wasting the limited time.

Existentialism and procrastination

Sartre’s philosophy of “bad faith” regarding being in itself and being for itself as if the

experience of itself has no consequence. Procrastination starts to look less like a question when

viewed through the lens of complex mixture of self conflict. Identity is considered to be a

mixture of competitive selves then what each of the selves represents? Philosopher Don Ross

offers his argument like each of the selves wants to do something different from the other and

while the selves fight the superego procrastinates. The procrastination of the external self is the

result of the conflict which the inner self experiences. The idea of divided self can be liberating

at times in practical terms through the extended will. Though procrastination is a product of

existentialism. Chronic procrastination is a problem of existence. Existentialism is a philosophy

of choice. And the unavoidable indecision, inaction and choice become the act and perhaps the

whole life. The space between anticipation and action is the place where we live with

procrastination.

Procrastination does not affect normal life

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8flHJolcdwg

If we consider this particular video then we can understand the phenomenon of procrastination

from an existential and a personal perspective. Procrastination is often treated as the primary

result of existentialism that is prominent in the life of a post modern man.

Anime, Manga and books have tremendous influence over the fantastical mindset and catalyzes

the process of imagination. A normal person’s brain does not function in the same manner as a

procrastinator’s brain works. The reality is further removed from the real word for the

procrastinators. The mundane on goings of life are definitely affected by procrastination but the

absolute truth of life that life means nothing and does not get affected by procrastination. It is

important to understand that procrastinating before a big and daunting task can be positive

and bear fruitful results. While one procrastinates the mind prepares itself over the fact that

how the work will get done. It seeks the solutions of the primary questions of life. The

procrastinators are the ones who are driven by the deadlines and prefer to do any task last

moment. Life itself is a vicarious cycle but as Camus at the end of “ The Myth of Sisyphus”

concludes that we must go on and practice our duties and carry out the deeds that are going to

lead us nowhere. Procrastination can have adverse effect on the time cycle as it provides one

with the opportunity of thinking. If one has subscribed the idea of not thinking by surrendering

to the ideology of “ Do not think” then the normal life of that person will be less hazardous and

he can perform and be compliant to the regular, day to day activities. Philosopher Mark

Kingwell puts in the terms of existentialism by stating that procrastinating often arises from a

Page 12: Perks of procrastination - abcassignmenthelp.com file · Web viewprocrastination is almost impossible rather it is important to focus not on how to avoid procrastination but how to

Student’sname12

sense there is a lot of work to do and finds not a single reason to do anything that is worth

doing. Action and inaction and the purpose of inaction achieves a different dimension

altogether in Shakespeare’s seminal plays Hamlet. Hamlet which is often considered as the

tragedy of inaction is based on the procrastination of the protagonist. The existential dilemma

in Hamlet prevents him from avenging his father’s death and he procrastinates long enough

and withdraws himself from the situation. Withdrawal of self is one of the major reasons

behind procrastinator’s procrastination.

It is often argued that the period of procrastination is time that the self takes before

reemergence. According to the scientists 20% of the adults who procrastinate are more

Page 13: Perks of procrastination - abcassignmenthelp.com file · Web viewprocrastination is almost impossible rather it is important to focus not on how to avoid procrastination but how to

creative than the rest. Procrastination often ends up with the most creative ideas but again it is

the procrastination that prevents one from materializing those ideas. Professor Shin has found

that those who procrastinate are often found to be most creative ones. In her study she has

found that under laboratory conditions when a group of people to submit their business ideas.

The ones who submitted their ideas after playing certain virtual games came up with more

creative ideas than the ones who submitted their ideas straight away. It has been claimed by

Professor Grant that some of the greatest moments of human history are the result of

procrastination which includes martin Luther King’s famous speech “ I have a dream”, Leonardo

Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
