Training Workshop Report - 6 December 2011

An open invitation to members was extended to workshop and develop recommen-

dations for improvements to the Perisher Training System. 14 members attended

the workshop with 13 additional patrollers providing written input by email. The

written feedback was provided to all attendees and circulated to interested parties.

A copy of the amended (May 2011) Perisher training flowchart was provided which

included the recent changes that included the Certificate II and the Certificate III

in Public Safety. Reference was made to Emergency Management Australia (as the

peak body for Rescue Work in Australia) and the increasing requirements for Res-

cue Workers to hold minimum formal qualifications to be able to participate in

government sponsored rescue operations.

Not all agenda items were completed during the workshop. Some items raised in

the written submissions were not addressed due to insufficient time.

Agenda:

1. Issues with the current system (brainstorm exercise)

2. Prioritising of issues

3. Possible Improvements

4. Pros and Cons of possible changes

5. Recommended changes list for implementation

Questions Arising from prior member consultation:

We still have a high rate of drop-out from the trainee program. Is that a recruitment issue, a workload

issue, a time in training issue, or something else? What can be done about it?

Should we have more off-mountain training?

Is there value in putting more material on our website; if so, how should it be presented to be of best

value to our trainees?

Should we consider a bond for trainees - or would that act as a disincentive?

Do we really need the training that we currently do (completeness, accuracy, timeliness, validity, accessi-

bility, reliability) or is it over-training?

The list of issues raised are too numerous to mention here but maybe obtained by contacting

Richard Hemsworth.

Grouped Prioritised Summary:

A large list of issues were raised and were prioritised and grouped. Three main issues arose:

A. The roles and responsibilities of all members needs to be clearly defined, simple, supported,

and facilitated.

B. Members need to work together as a team and treat each other with respect, ethics, profession-

alism, honesty, integrity, and empathy. The behaviours of members is reflected in the values

that are important to the group. Some members do not demonstrate those values which in-

clude: fairness and equity, respect, ethical behaviour, honesty, integrity, professional dealings,

and teamwork.

C. The quality of training resources do not pass the test of accuracy and completeness. Resources

need to be improved to be appropriate, available (accessible), timely, valid, and reliable.

Recommendations

A further workshop should be conducted to consider and formalise the recommendations.

The roles and responsibilities of all members need to be made clear and simple. They need to be

supported (reinforced) and facilitated.

Members need to work together as a team and treat each other ethically, with: respect, profession-

alism, honesty, openness, integrity and empathy.

At the upcoming seminar, a session should be conducted that establishes a "charter of values" for

the patrol; and reinforces a cultural change that removes perceived intimidation and fostering

openness.

To improve the quality of training, standards should be developed that answer questions like:

• where should the training take place?

• when and in what order should the training occur? (a blue print/ideal program)

• what standard specifically needs to be applied? (including support material develop-

ment)

Perisher should move to "own its own ski test", conducting the test using its own members. (not

endorsed by all)

SPRING THAW

October 29 2011

Attempts are made most years for an annual post season get together, and this year was no

exception with the 'Spring Thaw' at the Lowenbrau Keller.

Even with short notice, we had a good roll up of attendees at the Lowenbrau Keller at the

Rocks which, was coincidently hosting the Octoberfest. Preferred attire was Lederhosen but

all of those attending the 'Spring Thaw' missed the opportunity to don their Bavarian outfits

and decided to settle for tasting the range of Bavarian beer on offer.

The gathering proved to be a great way to talk over the events of season and to plan and dis-

cuss trips to the Northern Hemisphere in the approaching season there.

As the night went on, the time came for those with that look in their eye, to move on to other

night spots. But what happens at the PSP drinks stays at the PSP drinks. The only way to get

the 'goss' is to come back next season and do it again.

The Editor was able to gain the following insight and “goss” from an anonymous source.

“I’m sworn to secrecy…although there was the girl wearing a pair of chaps & not much else at some point and two people being

refused entry to a bar whilst another was allowed in (funny they don’t like letting straight people into gay bars!) make what you

will of that. You’ll have to put on you reporters hat and dig a bit deeper for more on that one, I still don’t think I’ve got the

full story yet.

There would have been more stories but I could see they were up for a big night & I had a pre-arranged early start the next day

& at one point around midnight I think, while they were all piling into a cab I being the gentleman let everyone else in first

then shoved (name withheld) in, slammed the door and disappeared into the crowd and made may escape.

I hear they surfaced in Windsor Sunday morning sometime around 11.00am”

84 billion litres of water was released from the

Jindabyne Dam in October. After it was proposed by

an expert panel of scientists in the nineties to provide

an annual environmental flow into the Snowy River.

With continued rainfall over the coming years it is

hoped the release will be an annual event.
