Rhino-Rack’s Batwing Awning has been certified a Gold Winner in the 2018 Good Design Awards under the Product Design: Sport and Lifestyle category.

All Good Design award entrants are evaluated against criteria such as good design, design innovation and design impact. Products awarded Gold Winner status must not only meet but exceed the good-design criteria.

Rhino-Rack says the Batwing is both stylish and functional, providing up to 270 degrees of shade and 11 square metres of coverage around a vehicle, and can be quickly and easily set up by one person. It is made from a heavy-duty material that is both mould and water-resistant, and has been tested and rated to UPF 50+.

Because of the latter, the Batwing has been endorsed by the Cancer Council and every purchase of the product supports the organisation’s work in cancer research, education and support services.

Rhino-Rack’s Kayle Everett, William Davis and John Klinkenberg are the team behind the Batwing’s unique and innovative design. Everett, the lead designer on this project, says he is delighted by the news.

“We’re honoured to be recognised by the Good Design Awards for our work on the Batwing,” says Everett. “A lot of work has been put into making sure we’ve created something that’s not only functional but with our customers’ best interests in mind. This award is reassurance that we’re on the right track.”

All Rhino-Rack products are tested to strict Australian standards and made collaboratively with car manufacturers in order to meet the latest market trends. The company says it is also committed to minimising environmental impact from design through to its manufacturing and distribution processes.

The annual Good Design Awards has showcased excellence in design and innovation in Australia to a national and international audience since 1998. The awards span 10 specific design disciplines covering 28 categories, and are recognised by the World Design Organisation (WDO).

DexKo Global Inc., a global leader in highly engineered trailer running gear and chassis assemblies and related components, is pleased to announce that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire G&S Chassis and Hume Caravan and Camping Accessories to expand its Australian operations.

G&S Chassis and Hume Caravan and Camping Accessories are Australian family-owned businesses and leaders in their respective fields of chassis manufacturing and supplying a diverse range of accessories used by leading caravan manufacturers nationally.

“We are excited to welcome the G&S Chassis and Hume teams to the DexKo organisation,” says DexKo Global CEO Fred Bentley. “These acquisitions allow us to expand into chassis manufacturing and supplying an even more diverse range of products in Australia through the integration of two leading businesses. We truly believe together is better for all of our businesses and this is our next step toward obtaining our DexKo 2020 vision.”

The transaction has the strong endorsement of the owners of G&S Chassis and Hume, the Inturrisi family. Rob Inturrisi will remain within the business as General Manager, along with many other members of the family.

“At G&S Chassis and Hume, we are very proud of the legacy we have built for over 40 years,” says Inturrisi. “Becoming part of the DexKo family will allow the business to continue to grow with the backing of the industry leader. I am confident that uniting with DexKo will be very beneficial for both our customers and employees.”

AL-KO Vehicle Technology Global President and CEO Harald Hiller says the acquisition will deliver many benefits for customers.

“We continue to add strong brands to our global portfolio and offer additional quality products to our customers,” says Hiller. “This integration will further expand our core business, which will allow us to service our customers as a systems supplier with an even broader range of solutions.”

AL-KO Australian Managing Director Peter Mannfolk is similarly excited by the new arrangement.

“I am excited by the opportunity to integrate G&S and Hume into the DexKo organisation,” says Mannfolk. “I look forward to the already successful G&S and Hume businesses continuing to service customers, whilst adding the additional support of AL-KO in Australia and the global chassis manufacturing expertise of DexKo to take chassis manufacturing in Australia to new heights.”

CCAM NEWS - 5 -

Australian electronics manufacturer Redarc Group has spoken in support of the Australian patent system following the Australian government’s recent decision to shelve plans to scrap the ‘Innovation Patent’ classification, pending further public consultation.

The Innovation Patent was introduced into the Australian intellectual property protection regime in 2001. It was intended to be a second tier of patent that was relatively quick, easy and cheap to obtain, although it provides a monopoly for eight years as opposed to the 20 year term of the standard patent.

The Innovation Patent has been criticised by some as being too easy to obtain and too difficult to overturn. However, proponents of the system argue that it is useful in enforcement action because it provides a faster route to patent protection than a standard patent. They say it helps stimulate innovation by Australian small to medium business enterprises, and provides an appropriate means for protecting lower level inventions that may not be entitled to standard patent protection.

The Federal government had been hinting at plans to abolish the innovation-patent system as part of the Intellectual Property Laws Amendment (Productivity Commission Response Part 1 and Other Measures) Bill 2018. However, in response to industry backlash after the bill was introduced to the Australian House of Representatives in late March, the government removed the section dealing with abolition of the Innovation Patent, and is now undertaking further industry consultation on the subject.

Redarc Electronics CEO Anthony Kittel is a big supporter of the Innovation Patent.

“At Redarc we are always seeking to be innovative, and we spend millions of dollars on research and development in order to be at the cutting edge of technology,” says Kittel. “It has been particularly frustrating to observe other companies, who devote no time or resources to their own research and development, simply copying our innovative products and getting away with it. The Innovation Patent is a useful part of our armoury to stop that copying.”

Redarc has much experience in the intellectual property field, having been rewarded with a successful outcome in April 2018 following patent proceedings issued against Great South Land Pty Ltd (GSL). Redarc alleged that GSL copied its award-winning Tow Pro electric trailer-brake controller, which was the subject of an Australian Innovation Patent. Redarc brought proceedings against GSL in the Federal Court, seeking restraining orders and damages. GSL, while not admitting liability, conceded to those orders and agreed to pay back its profits from the sale of its products, together with Redarc’s costs.

“This case was a good example of how effective the Innovation Patent can be in protecting our intellectual property,” says Kittel. “This gives Redarc incentive to invest more in research and development and helps Australia to be a smarter country. For as long as Redarc seeks to be innovative, it will be using legal tools such as the Innovation Patent to enforce its rights against copycat manufacturers.”

Piper Alderman Intellectual Property lawyer Tim O’Callaghan acted for Redarc in the action against GSL.

“The Innovation Patent is Australia’s recognition to the importance of small steps of innovative improvement, and is a very useful tool in preventing copycats,” says O’Callaghan. “Only China and Germany have a similar system. In this case, we have seen first-hand how the ability to have an innovation patent is a major incentive for small to medium companies like Redarc to spend large sums of money on innovation. That is a very good thing for the country.”

The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA) also supports the Innovation Patent, and has been critical of the push for its abolition.

“IPTA is opposed to plans to abolish the Innovation Patent system,” says IPTA council member Grant Shoebridge. “The main users of the system are the very SMEs (small-medium business enterprises) that are acknowledged to be the main source of new jobs and growth in the Australian economy, and which largely support the government’s jobs and growth agenda.”

IPTA has been actively coordinating a bid to save the Innovation Patent system, and responded to the government’s decision to undertake further industry consultation.

“IPTA is pleased with this development and welcomes the decision by IP Australia to undertake further consultation targeted at better understanding the needs of Australian SMEs, rather than fast-tracking the abolition of an important Australian innovation tool,” says Shoebridge. “IPTA will continue to lobby to retain Innovation Patents.”

An exciting new entrant has emerged in the caravan industry with the launch of Let’s Go Caravan Insurance at the Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s annual conference in May.

Let’s Go Caravan Insurance was developed via a partnership between Caravan Industry Association of Australia and NM Insurance, one of Australia’s largest specialist underwriting agents.

“There are sadly too many Australians who are uninsured or under-insured with their caravanning product and this partnership with NM Insurance will further raise the profile of caravan insurance amongst the community,” said Caravan Industry Association of Australia CEO Stuart Lamont at the launch. “The opportunity to partner in consumer caravan insurance represented a unique offering and allowed both NM Insurance and the association to build on their respective strengths to simultaneously deliver a product to market.”

NM Insurance Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Turner was similarly enthusiastic.

“Let’s Go Caravan Insurance represents a fresh approach for caravan insurance across Australia,” said Turner. “We look forward to servicing consumers, dealers and manufacturers alike with our on-line quote and bind facility.”

DexKo Global Inc, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality chassis technology, chassis assemblies and accessory parts, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a minority shareholding in VB-Airsuspension B.V. based in Varsseveld, Netherlands.

This strategic partnership strengthens the core business of AL-KO Vehicle Technology. This shareholding is the logical next step in the development of their close relationship. The move will allow AL-KO Vehicle Technology to concentrate its know-how and development in the field of high-quality air-suspension systems for motorhomes and light-commercial vehicles.

VB-Airsuspension is a leading manufacturer of professional full air-suspension, semi air-suspension, coil-spring and controlled shock-absorber systems. The company’s proven expertise has made it a leader in the market and a specialist in retrofit components for 25 years.

As part of the cooperation, all the know-how and expertise in the development and manufacture of air-suspension systems will be brought together and concentrated in the Netherlands. The management of DexKo has full confidence in the future collaboration with the management and staff of VB-Airsuspension.

A new company building will be constructed to help support future growth. The existing buildings will continue to be utilised to provide space for sales, marketing, development and the VB Academy to ensure the opening of further sales channels and the development of new products.

“We are very pleased to have gained a strategic partner in the air-suspension system sector in VB-Airsuspension,” says DexKo Global CEO Fred Bentley. “The result is an ideal expansion of our portfolio. The high quality standards of VB-Airsuspension’s products, first-class design and development, customer proximity and presence in the aftersales market, including service, are an exact match for the requirements of DexKo. We are continuously working to optimise our range of products and level of service and this partnership is consistent with our strategy.”

President and CEO of AL-KO Vehicle Technology Harald Hiller emphasises the significance of this strategic partnership.

“Thanks to the cooperation with VB-Airsuspension, we are strengthening our position as a leading chassis manufacturer,” says Hiller. “We are building on the expertise and know-how of VB-Airsuspension, whose air-suspension systems complement AL-KO Vehicle Technology’s range of chassis technology. This will allow us to further enlarge our product range. In addition, I am particularly looking forward to working with the existing management team.”

VB-Airsuspension Managing Director and joint founder Iginio Voorhorst says the new cooperation is the perfect step for the company.

“We celebrated our company’s 25th anniversary on April 1, 2018,” says Voorhorst. “Now we are proud to have a strong partner at our side in DexKo. This step confirms our outstanding work as a healthy, growing company with an excellent market position and offers huge opportunities for a successful future.

“Based on our closeness to the market and our strong customer focus, we know the needs of our customers very well and can offer tailor-made solutions. This is where we can provide dependable support to DexKo. Looked at the other way around, this cooperation with offers us access to new markets for which we already have a few ideas in the pipeline. We are prepared!”

VB-Airsuspension Managing Director Gerald Molenveld says the move is a big positive in an important stage for the company.

“We are going through a further, very important period in the history of VB-Airsuspension,” says Molenveld. “I have been on the board for almost three years now. During this time, the company has developed very positively. VB-Airsuspension and AL-KO Vehicle Technology maintain a long-standing commercial relationship, therefore this strategic partnership is now the next logical step. I look forward to a good, successful future and the opportunities it will yield for us.”

Lumileds, the exclusive manufacturer of Philips Automotive products, has announced an industry-leading partnership with Brown and Watson International (BWI).

The partnership will see BWI join forces with Lumileds to provide Australian customers with the latest in automotive lighting technology, products and customer support.

Lumileds APAC Regional Manager Paul Oddy says the partnership will ensure the long-term success and growth of the Philips Automotive brand in Australia.

“BWI are already a leader in lighting and electrical products in Australia and NZ, so adding the Philips product range was a natural fit and one we are confident will help us achieve stronger market penetration,” says Oddy.

BWI CEO George Davies is equally optimistic about the partnership, saying BWI is well positioned to maximise the success of Philips products through its comprehensive distribution network.

“We’ve approached this with the consideration bringing a global brand like Philips on board needs,” says Davies. “We’ve made a significant investment in the business through stock holding and the appointment of key staff to help manage the brand to meet its full potential.

“Customers can expect to see more innovative lighting products and accessories in more places, more often.”

Philips’ history covers more than 100 years of innovation in lighting technology and the company is a global leader in the automotive-lighting industry. The brand is a leading choice for car makers globally, with one in three cars fitted at the factory

with Philips lights. BWI is Australian-owned and, through its Narva and

Industrial manslaughter is treated differently nationally and penalties and jail terms around the country are significantly different.

The labour government in Victoria, for example, is promising to create a new criminal offence of workplace manslaughter that would allow employers to be fined almost$16millionforindustrialdeaths.

Employers who negligently cause the deaths of their workers, meanwhile, could also face up to 20 years of jail under the election promise. The new offence would extend beyond the employer’s staff and Victoria would then lead the way with the toughest penalties.

Unions, who have called for tougher penalties for considerable time, including jail terms, are behind this new legislation.

The death of 234 Victorians in the last decade is the driving force behind this new law. But the national statistics are what must be considered.

WORKER FATALITIES – 2003 TO 2016

3414 workers died.

39 per cent of worker fatalities were due to a vehiclecollision.

44 workers who died in 2016 worked in the agriculture, forestryandfishingindustry.

WORK-RELATED INJURIES

Safe Work Australia reported in 2009 -10 that 638,400 workers reported they had incurred a work-related injury inthat12months–aninjuryincidencerateof57.9per1000 workers. That’s one in 17 workers affected by a workplace injury. There are 2.1 million small businesses that account for 97.4 per cent of all businesses operating in Australia, with a third employing between one and 19 employees. As tough as it is, the odds are stacked against a small business owner if they don’t make changes in their workplace in relation to work health safety.Even though workplace fatalities and injuries have been declining over the last 15 years, the impact of a fatality in a workplace is long-lasting and those associated with the deceased worker and the workplace never recover from the trauma associated with the fatality and the loss. The cost of work-related injury and disease to our economyin2012-13wasestimatedtobe$61.8billionat 4.1 per cent of GDP. That equates to an injured worker costingtheeconomy$96,805perworker.Canyouimagine what this would mean to your bottom line?

Just this week I was a participant in a moot court situation involving a forklift. The scenario played out was so similar to what I hear so often… speed, seat belt not being worn and complacency. It’s usually not the forklift operator that is killed or seriously injured but the person they hit and/or the goods they are moving around falling on the person in the working area.

It’s time for all employers to revisit their work health safety practices and make the necessary changes required to reduce the potential risk of injury and death. There’s nothing worse than finding the perfect free camp, only to find you have no TV reception.

That’s where the Travel Vision R6 Automatic Satellite Antenna comes in. This compact device weighs just nine kilograms and is designed to automatically find the strongest TV signal and deliver crystal-clear reception, regardless of how remote you are.

The system is fully developed and manufactured in the Netherlands and comes with a two year warranty for peace of mind on the road. Australian distributor Intellisat says it’s incredibly easy to store, set up and run, and a game-changer for free campers.

No signal? No worriesUnlike some fixed satellite dishes, the R6 automatically searches for the strongest signal, adjusting its position with small electronic motors until it can set up the best link. Combined with a high-quality laminated 80cm dish, it’s built to survive Australia’s harsh climate. The R6 finds the Optus C1/D3 satellite, giving it the ability to receive crystal-clear reception, even in bad weather.

DIY installationThanks to its compact size, the Travel Vision R6 can easily be stored in a van’s tunnel boot or external storage. When you set up camp, all you need to do is open the tripod, connect to your viewer access satellite television (VAST) receiver and press the ‘search’ button. That’s it.

Intellisat says the good news doesn’t end there – once theR6 has located and locked on to the Optus C1 satellite, you can remove the LCD control panel and go inside, making the whole system anti-theft and anti-fuss.

Extend the life of winter gear Winter is now in full force, so it’s time to dust off the ski gear. However, if a hydrophobic down or regular down-filled garment is dirty or greasy, its performance is hindered. This leads to extra weight that can leave the wearer wet, cold and uncomfortable, which is hardly ideal in the chilly and wet conditions of the ski fields.

With this in mind, Nikwax has launched Down Wash Direct in Australia, just in time for your customer’s next winter adventure.

Down Wash Direct is an easy-to-use washing solution for hydrophobic down and regular down-filled clothing and gear. It is hand-wash and machine-wash friendly and designed to clean effectively while restoring water repellency.

Nikwax says if gear is relatively new, or been recently treated with a waterproof coating, Down Wash Direct is ideal for restoring insulation and revitalising durable water repellent (DWR) properties.

Down Wash Direct is designed to gently but efficiently remove dirt and body oils from both outer fabric and the regular down fill while simultaneously restoring the existing DWR properties throughout a garment.

This revives the breathability of the item by allowing moisture vapours to pass through instead of seeping into the clothing, optimising its performance in cold and damp conditions.

Nikwax says it aims to produce innovative and safe high-performance waterproofing, cleaning and conditioning solutions for outdoor gear that are environmentally friendly and cruelty-free. Down Wash Direct, like all of its products, is palm-oil-free, non-hazardous, water-based, biodegradable and contains zero fluorocarbons.

Nikwax Down Wash Direct is available from leading outdoor and snow retailers nationally and best used in conjunction with Nikwax Down Proof.

One way to help make sure your vehicle stays the right way up is to keep as much of your cargo down low and in tune with the centre of gravity.

RV Storage Solutions says it has designed its new range of easy-access drawer-combo systems in line with that philosophy. Not only that, it makes access to the gear in a vehicle easier.

Many travellers have a fridge and many also try to put the biggest fridge they can in their 4WD. If you put the fridge up on top of a set of drawers, the vertically challenged might have no way of reaching that cold drink unless they stand on a box or carry a ladder. Drop slides are one solution but they are large and cumbersome, really only suited to smaller fridges and don’t adhere to the whole ‘keep the centre of gravity low’ philosophy, either.

RV Storage Solutions says big fridges belong down low on a low-mounted slide, and on a slide that fully extends for the best access. Its easy-access combo-drawer systems can be had in a single-drawer/low-slide combo or a twin-stack/low-slide combo. They can take fridges up to 110 litres such as the large Waecos and are available in various lengths to suit most 4WDs on the market.

For 4WD wagons such as the Toyota LandCruiser Prado 150-Series and LandCruiser 200-Series, buyers have the option of a cargo barrier that mounts to the drawers. Wagon systems can also utilise a new top cargo shelf and side-vented fridge barrier panel to further increase storage and vehicle useability.

Dual-cab utes of all different sizes are catered to by RV Storage Solutions’ full-length easy-access combos. The company says their deeper bottom drawers and full-length lower slides work really well and allow for access to other gear such as jerry cans or batteries.

RV Storage Solutions products are manufactured in New Gisborne, Victoria and the company has distributors nationwide.

303 says its full range of automotive protectants is the gold standard in automotive protection and has been used by car detailers and auto enthusiasts for years.

303 Automotive Protectant is designed to be used for a number of applications. Applying it to a vehicle’s interior and exterior trim can go a long way to ensuring these often overlooked parts of a car remain in optimum condition. Just spray a small amount on plastic and vinyl surfaces, then wipe the excess away with a clean micro-fibre towel. For best results reapply every 30-45 days.

A regular application of 303 can also protect a vehicle’s underbody plastics against dust, dirt and oily spray, keeping them looking good throughout the life of the car.

Tyres are a car’s only connection to the road and often subject to abuse. It’s important for tyres to be in good condition and 303 can help keep them free from damage such as dry rot, as well as looking like they just rolled off the showroom floor.

RVs and caravans, too, have a number of surfaces that can respond well to 303 Automotive Protectants, including leather, plastics, vinyl, cabinets, cupboards, countertops and other surfaces that require some form of maintenance.

303 Automotive Protectant is available from all good automotive accessory retailers.

Narva says its new range of LED Awning Lamps delivers comfort and convenience on the road once the sun goes down while covering just about every application. There are now four new models to choose from, providing additional options for users.

Narva’s existing range of LED Awning Lamps are oval-shaped. The new additions, contrastingly, are longer and narrower, making them suitable for fitment to areas where the originals might not have fitted.

The new Narva LED Awning Lamp range begins with the 87792 model, which also combines a PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor. This 12V lamp measures 365mm x 49mm at its widest points and features a sleek, contemporary design suitable for modern vans, caravans and motorhome exteriors. Its light output comes courtesy of SMD LEDs, which deliver a bright, white light (30 lux at two metres).

Other features of the lamp include its low current draw of 0.5A at 12V, tough polycarbonate lens and IP66 rating. This light is also available without the PIR sensor (part number 87790) and both are backed by Narva’s five-year LED warranty.

For additional brightness, the new 87794-12 variant uses six 0.5W high-powered LEDs to output 33 lux at two metres while maintaining a low current draw (0.25A at 12V). With compact

dimensions of 218mm x 44mm, this 12V model is also IP66-rated and suitable for campers, for use as a utility lamp or even for emergency services and transport applications.

The 12-24V 87796 model, with its larger 332mm x 44mm dimensions, makes use of 12 0.5W high-powered LEDs to develop a bright light output of 65 lux at two metres but current draw remains low (0.50A at 12V or 0.25A at 24V). This lamp is also IP66-rated and a stylish, practical addition to any motorhome, caravan or for transport and emergency-services work. Occupying the top end of the new Narva LED Awning Lamp range in terms of size and output is the 12-24V 87798 lamp, which offers 130 lux of bright light at two metres courtesy of 24 0.5W high-powered LEDs.

Just like the other new additions to the range, this variant is durable and weatherproof to IP66 and suited to use as a coupling lamp for transport applications, for RV awnings or for emergency-service work. This lamp’s dimensions are generous (560mm x 44mm) but current draw remains low (1.0A at 12V and 0.5A at 24V).

Narva’s new range of LED Awning Lamps is available from leading automotive and outlets transport nationwide.

Comfort and convenience when the sun goes down

RV Towing Solutions has launched its new D.I.Y. Adjustable Smart Line, a simple, do-it-yourself, awning-mounted clothes line for caravans and RVs.

This lightweight product is designed to secure easily to a vehicle’s awning arms and is ideal for drying clothes, wet towels or airing sheets. It is made from marine-grade stainless-steel fittings and RV Towing Solutions says it is guaranteed not to rust or sag under a heavy load.

The D.I.Y. Adjustable Smart Line is available in two sizes, an adjustable 17-foot version to suit all awnings up to 17 feet and a 20-foot adjustable line for awnings up to 20 feet.

RV Towing Solutions says fitment is as simple as measuring the length of the awning between the awning arms or measuring the full awning, then cutting the wire (instructions in the kit) and fitting. It says it takes only seconds for the line to be fitted to the awning once initial installation has been done.

The D.I.Y. Adjustable Smart Line comes complete with fixtures to secure it to the awning arms, plus a weatherproof pouch for easy storage when not in use.

In 2014 HPPLunds announced the new distribution partnership of the iconic US brand JB Weld for Australia. Since then JB Weld sales in Australia have grown at a rapid rate and the brand’s products are now available from most automotive outlets in the country.

Now HPPLunds is proud to announce another brand-distributionpartnershipofaniconicUSbrandforAustralia–the Formula 1 car care range.

So what is the story behind Formula 1? HPPLunds says it asked Formula 1 to give it the secret of its success and the company broke it down to the three following areas:

Brand recognitionThe term ‘Formula 1’ is obviously synonymous with high performance in the motorsport world. But it also has parallels with wealth, technology and celebrities. Formula 1 says its branding and its close association with the motorsport circuit reflect this connection.

Carnauba qualityThis is fundamental to the Formula 1 brand and the company says it puts this key ingredient first. It says it is fundamental to its success and it will always source carnauba of the highest quality.

ValueFormula 1 says it prides itself on delivering quality at a competitive price and that car care product consumers needtoaskthemselvesthisquestion–whyistheresucha variation in the price of car care products when other cleaning products (dish soap, body wash, etc) do not have brands commanding more than two or three times the average price?

HPPLunds spent several months researching and quality testing Formula 1 products and says all products exceeded its expectations for quality and performance. It says Formula 1 product pricing is competitive and delivers excellent margins for stockists in a tough market.

The Formula 1 range covers 50 part numbers and includes carnauba waxes and car wash-and-wax products in various sizes and quality levels, as well as protectants and cleaners for all parts of the vehicle.

To get your own copy of the Formula 1 catalogue or become a Formula 1 stockist, get in touch with HPPLunds.

Go HUD for safer drivingTrying to keep to the speed limit can be a challenging task sometimes. How many times have you struggled to read your speedo or had to keep taking your eyes off the road to monitor your speed?

Polaris says it has the answer with its new Digital Head-up Display, or HUD for short. The small module mounts on either the vehicle’s dashboard or windscreen and displays its current speed.

Having the speed displayed in digital format in direct or peripheral vision makes for a safer driving environment. The Polaris Digital HUD also features fixed speed and red-light camera audible alerts that warn the driver on approach, another handy feature that potentially lowers the risk of speeding fines and demerit points.

The Polaris Digital HUD plugs straight into a vehicle’s 12V outlet and calculates the speed via GPS satellites for an accurate speed reading.

The team at Mister Hitches has just released its newly developed Raptor 4.5t HD Series adjustable/reversible hitch (4500kg gross trailer weight [GTW], 450kg tongue weight [TW]) and says it’s the only hitch you will ever need.

Mister Hitches is a leading Australian manufacturer of towing products and has one of Australia’s largest ranges of specialty hitches.

Its new Raptor Super Duty adjustable has been tested and rated to comply with ADR62/02, the ADR that tests the hitch’s longitudinal tension to a whopping 6750kg. The hitch shank and the ball platform are fully reversible, giving it 16 stages of height adjustment. It also has multiple hitch-pin holes for adjustable lengths, too.

The Raptor hitch has been designed in Australia and incorporates more than two years of extensive R&D and testing in local conditions. The ball platform has been designed to accept both 50mm 3.5-tonne and 70mm 4.5-tonne tow balls, and is also suitable to take DO35, DO45, Treg, AL-KO, McHitch, Hitch-Ezy, Ark and Oz-Hitch couplings. High-tensile three-quarter-inch bolts, Nyloc nuts and toothed conical washers hold the ball platform to the shank securely.

The standard adjustable Raptor hitch has height adjustments from a maximum drop of 210mm to a maximum rise of 188mm. Using the optional long-drop shanks, a maximum drop of 370mm and maximum height of 350mm can be achieved.

The Mister Hitches product range also includes its famous weight-distribution systems, friction sway-control device, ADR tow balls (50mm, 70mm) and its Towsafe original ball-weight scale and caravan wheel-weighing platform scales, plus a huge range of specialty hitches and accessories.

Continuing their commitment to innovation, the CORGHI Uniformity is revolutionizing Tyre Changer Technology. The Uniformity is the world’s first ‘Diagnostic Tyre Changer’ and is claimed to be breaking new ground in both safety and efficiency.

“This truly is ground breaking technology,” said Andrew Cornwell, General Manager, Corghi Australia.

The Uniformity halves the number of steps it takes to fit a new tyre. As a result, it delivers massive increases in workshop efficiencies in addition to improved workflow and safety. But most importantly investing in a Uniformity can ultimately increase profitability.

“This is a massive step forward in workshop technology that will allow workshops to turn jobs around much faster,” Andrew said. “The Uniformity is the first Tyre Changer that allows match-mounting to be carried out directly on the tyre changer, transforming it into a real wheel diagnosis centre,” Andrew explained. “This is essential for the professional who wants to provide clients with a first-class service.”

The key is the unique variable thrust pressing roller and the precision laser sensor. This delivers a complete diagnostic evaluation of each individual wheel and/or the entire set of

vehicle wheels. It analyses the wheel geometry in a loaded and unloaded state, simulating behaviour on the road and favouring driver comfort and safety, in addition to completing the normal tyre mounting and demounting operations. The analysis takes into account the geometry of the rim and the uniformity of the tyre and includes

checking radial, lateral rigidity and geometrical deformations that cause on-road vibrations. “The Uniformity resolves the vibration problem by providing the tyre fitter with suggestions about how to best mount the tyre on the rim, making it possible to reduce the actuation work time by at least 25% and reducing the total time by up to 50% when compared with traditional tyre fitters,” said Andrew.

Featuring ‘Smart’ technology, the Uniformity guides the operator step-by-step through the tasks that need to be performed to successfully mount the tyre. Each operation is presented in a very simple manner thanks to the modern and intuitive graphic video interface.

Finally, the machine resolves the detected faults by optimising the coupling position between the rim and tyre, more commonly known as match-mounting, thus delivering the only true solution to this problem by avoiding unnecessary steps between tyre changers and wheel balancers.

Cruisemaster’s next-generation Country Road Suspension (CRS) system, CRS2, is now available for delivery.

The original CRS semi-off-road suspension system was first developed back in 2013 and was designed to deliver the quality of an independent-arm suspension without the purpose or extra weight of a full off-road system. It is now fitted to many of Australia’s leading semi-off-road caravans from names such as Avida, JB Caravans and Evernew.

So why the new model? Cruisemaster, never a company to rest on its laurels, says its continuous-improvements philosophy drives ongoing development of both existing and new products and it saw an opportunity to improve the CRS design. KeyCRS2advancesinclude:•Newshock-mountdesignsignificantlyreducestheweight associated with suspension installation by removing the need for the traditional cross member for shocks. •2.5-tonnesingleor3.5-tonnetandemaggregatetrailermass (ATM) gives increased capacity to the single-axle option, making CRS2 stronger than its predecessor.•CRS2iseasiertoinstallduetomodificationsmadetothe suspension mounts.•Cruisemaster’sroundbush/hingetechnology,asseenon the company’s off-road suspension systems, has now been integrated into the CRS2 system.•CRS2addsdisc-brakecompatibilityasapremiumoptionover the traditional electric drum-brake option.•In-builtcable-managementsystemkeepsimportantcablestidy and out of harm’s way.•Improvedgrease-nipplepositioncomparedtothepreviousCRS for greater protection from stone damage.•Lowerjackingpositionforimprovedaccessibilityandeaseofuse.

Like all Cruisemaster products, CRS2 was put under the intense scrutiny of the company’s Remote Area Testing program, or RAT Run. A prototype version of CRS2 was part of the 2017 RAT Run to Alice Springs, which Cruisemaster says was one of the toughest RAT Runs to date, and pushed to breaking point.

Development on the project continued back at Cruisemaster’s site in Brisbane, taking on board the learnings from running CRS2

through some of the roughest tracks in Australia. CRS2 is also the first Cruisemaster product to be tested on its new CORCS (Cruisemaster Off-Road Corrugation Simulator) machine. The company says this new piece of equipment allowed the suspension to be tested at an accelerated rate over simulated corrugations to benchmark performance and establish an expected product lifespan.

CRS2 was officially launched by Cruisemaster in June at the Queensland Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow and consumer kits are now rolling off the production line. The company says manufacturers have responded positively to the weight savings of the new design and that end users will love the simple functionality of the day-to-day improvements. Like other Cruisemaster products, CRS2 is covered by the company’s five-year conditional warranty.

If you’re already using CRS, you will be contacted by a Cruisemaster sales representative to discuss the transition, production lead times and pricing of CRS2. If you are new to CRS and want to learn more about CRS2, contact your Cruisemaster sales rep directly.

A powerful, efficient and safe cordless pump-and-puller combination is being offered by Enerpac for the speedy removal of bearings, bushings, gears, sleeves, wheels, flywheels, sprocketsand other shaft-mounted items.

The highly portable combination incorporates new Enerpac Sync Grip (SG) hydraulic pullers in capacities up to 45 tonnes, actuated by go-anywhere XC cordless pumps that offer the performance capabilities of an electric or pneumatic powered pump with the convenient portability of a hand pump.

“The new Sync Grip pullers feature synchronised movement of their locking jaws for simultaneous engagement and optimised safety, enabling one person to do jobs that often previously took two people,” says Enerpac National Sales Manager Darryl Lange.

The versatility of the SG pullers is complemented by XC-Series cordless pumps, which are designed to satisfy the need for a long-lasting pump that can be used in hard-to-access areas. XC cordless pumps are constructed from lightweight materials, equipped with a powerful, one-half horsepower motor and feature 28V lithium-ion battery technology.

Enerpac says its XC-Series promotes operator safety by removing trip hazards associated with traditional powered pumps.

“The XC/SG combination is ideal for a wide variety of common maintenance tasks either off-site or in workshops where operations staff appreciate the power and precision of safety-first hydraulics that are easy and convenient to apply to sometimes less accessible and potentially jobs,” says Lange.

Boab poly tanks are a safe, affordable solution for buyers who want a built-in water storage system or who are simply looking for a quick, convenient way to carry extra water.

Boab water tanks are manufactured from BPA-free polyethylene and come in capacities from 20 through to 120 litres and a range of sizes to suit all kinds of applications, from simple ‘drop-in’ fitments to fully plumbed concealed systems.

Boab water tanks are designed to withstand harsh conditions and precision moulded from hard-wall, food-grade polyethylene. Boab says this gives them consistent quality and heavy-duty durability without the weight and cost penalties of traditional stainless-steel tanks.

The Boab range starts with a smarter version of the simple jerry-can design. This 20-litre unit fits standard jerry-can holders but is purpose-built to carry extra water and has an easy-fill cap and protected outlet tap recessed into the base.

The next step up in Boab capacity is 40 litres, where there’s choice of a ‘double’ jerry-can unit that can be built-in or added where required, plus an angled tank designed to mount adjacent to the wheels of utes or camper trailers and a drop-in unit that fits over the footwell hump behind the front seats in utes and wagons.

Boab says its tanks are designed to make the most of available space. The ‘tapered’ 50-litre unit is designed to fit behind a vehicle’s seats or in the front of a ute’s tray, while the 42-litre ‘vertical’ incorporates wheelarch cut-outs to allow it to fit easily into utes or behind the seats in wagons.

For added versatility in a ‘thin’ tank design, Boab offers a 90mm-thick, 45-litre tank that can be mounted in either a flat or upright position, making it suitable for concealed mounting behind wall or floor panels, on roof racks or vertically or flat in utes, trailers and wagons.

When capacity is as important as space, Boab offers an ‘oblong’ 60-litre unit that can be mounted flat or vertically or –forthosewhosimplywanttheoptionoftakingmorewateralong–a55-litrerectangularunitthatcansimplybedroppedin and secured with tie-down straps.

For those who want serious capacity, Boab offers a ‘flat’ 80-litre tank designed for underbody mounting or a massive

120-litre rectangular unit for use in motorhome, camper and ute/truck applications.

Plumbing is designed to be handled by DIY installers. Boab tanks employ standard-size outlets and brass fittings and –forapplicationswheregravityfeedisn’tappropriate–anoptional 12V pump with auto-pressure switch and hose kits are available.

Boab also offers a range of poly diesel tanks for those who want a quick, convenient way to extend their vehicle’s range without major modifications or expense, featuring a drop-in installation and simple gravity fuel feed.

Boab tanks are distributed in Australia by Dolium visit: www.dolium.com.au and are available across the country.

Mounting surfaces The mounting surface of a lightweight panel provides the thermal and mechanical properties that are provided by the glass and aluminium frame of a conventional panel.

The best surface for lightweight panels is rigid steel followed by aluminium because these have a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and there will be little variation in properties regardless of the source of the material. Fibreglass can have a low CTE of about 20 to 27 x 10-9 m/m K depending on fibre properties orientation. It can be suitable but difficulties can also occur with RV fibreglass roofs, so personalised advice from Solar 4 RVs is recommended.

All plastics have a high CTE and are not recommended as a substrate for this reason because they may result in a ‘stretching’ force on the panel. However, vented twin-wall polycarbonate strips attached with a high-bond tape underneath each cell gap can work well (note: use strips only –notafullsheet).

Installation – vented air gap or direct bonding? Aventedairgapbetweenthepanelandroofprovidesahostofbenefitsforthepanel,roofanduser:1.Airflowunderneathremovesheatfromthepanel,which: •Reducespaneltemperature, thusreducingtheageingrate of cells and materials.

•Reducesthermo-mechanicalstressbetweendifferent materials in the panel, thus reducing the ageing rate and likelihood of premature failure.

•Optimisesheatremovalfromthepanelowingtothe underside being directly vented.

2.Shadeandairflowreducesthetemperatureoftheroof,meaning:

•Minimisesmoistureabsorptionintopanel.Noplasticsare absolutely 100 per cent waterproof and the small amount of moisture absorbed will increase the ageing rate because, one, water molecules expand differently to plastic molecules and, two, the corrosion of the metallic components.

•Minimisesmoistureabsorptionthroughmicro-cracksinthe fibreglass gelcoat, which could accelerate ageing.

•Avoidsthepossibilityofalgaeformingbecausewatercan drain away and dry out.

•Easilyandquicklybynon-specialiststaff.

•Withoutdamage.

•Withoutspecialisttools.

You can still attach panels without a vented gap but the lifespan of the panels will vary and is not entirely predictable due to the unknown thermal-expansion properties of the surface.

Test results The thermal image on the next page shows panel temperature when sitting directly on an insulated surface versus a vented gap with wind blowing directly under the panel. Note that these measurements were carried out with an ambient air temperature of about 38°C and mid-afternoon sun in Melbourne in early January.

The left side of the panel is sitting directly on a composite fibreglass/foam/fibreglass sheet with an average temperature of about 79°C.

The right side is vented by wind blowing from the bottom of the image towards the top, creating a temperature gradient of 22°C over the length of the panel with an average temperature at the mid-point of 56°C. This is 23°C cooler than the left side, so in theory the vented side will produce seven per cent more power (i.e. 23°C *0.3%/°C = 7%) than the left side using SunPower cells, or nine percent more using conventional P-type cells.

Maintenance of flexible solar panelsNo regular maintenance is required for RADpower, eArche or Solbian solar panels except for checking the security/bonding of the panel on the surface and possibly cleaning the panel. Note that ETFE top sheets are effectively ‘non-stick’ and self-cleaning. Light dust might be able to be brushed off but a soft brush/cloth and water with a little dishwashing liquid (to lower surface tension more than anything) can also be used if necessary. Do this in the shade when the panels are cool.
