A short company historyIn 1963 the mischance parting ofa light pull-cord from its knobtriggered off the thought thatthere must be a better means ofattachment than threading thecord through a hole and tying aknot.

With the 'necessity' established,the 'invention' followed in shortorder and was proved by a modelcomprising of two pieces ofPerspex in each of which ridgeswere machined at an angle andwhich, when cemented together,formed the first of our cleats - gripcommensurate with load and nomoving parts.

Scepticism greeted this simple,unique device - the firstinnovation in rope cleats for over40 years. However, followingexhaustive development work onnumerous prototypes andextensive material trials, the firstnylon cleat was produced in1964. In the same yearClamcleats Limited was formed,initial patents were filed and thetrade mark Clamcleat wasregistered.

The company is a family concernwith sound engineering andadministrative background anddedicated to offering quality andpersonal service. Right from thebeginning, it has been companypolicy to offer excellent service toall our customers. Good stocksare held so most orders can besupplied ex-stock, via distributorsthroughout the sailing world.

All of manufacturing is undertakenin house, from design andtoolmaking, through casting andmoulding to finishing andpackaging. This ensures allstages of production can beclosely controlled to ensure highquality cleats.

Whilst Clamcleat® rope cleatssell chiefly in the sail-boat andwindsurfing markets, there arenumerous industrial applications -but no call, so far, for a switchpull-cord cleat!

Complementaryranges to satisfyall needsMarine grade nylon cleats offervery good value for money, forboth production builder and sailoralike. They are ideal for mostapplications where high loads orrope surges are not likely to beencountered. Nylon cleats arecorrosion resistant and will last formany years outdoors.

Aluminium cleats are highlysuccessful in providing acomplete answer to rope burn.They are unaffected by the heatgenerated by a rope surging backthrough a cleat as well as beingsuitable for sub-zerotemperatures. Corrosionresistance is good.

For extra protection fromcorrosion and a high techappearance all of our popularaluminium cleats are offered witha hard anodised finish.

Our research into cleat materialsover the years has shownaluminium to be far better for highperformance cleats than anypolymer, irrespective of any fibrereinforcement or additive. Thesefactors make aluminium cleats thebest choice for demandingapplications.

How our cleats work

A deceptively simple ridged ‘V’ groove holds ropes firmly, yet is devoid of any movingparts to break or seize. It allows the immediate release of the rope by a short upwardand backward pull.

Always tension the rope before it enters the cleat. Dragging the rope backwards overthe teeth may cause damage, especially to the nylon cleats.

Clamcleat® rope cleats are not suitable for metal ropes.

Most cleats are provided with countersunk fixingholes. Countersunk head screws or bolts of therecommended size should be used; bolts beingpreferred. If using rivets with a powered fixing gun,make sure the pressure is not set too high.Fastenings must be entered straight so that theheads do not protrude to snag the rope. Several ofthe cleats have been designed with a groove in thebase enabling them to be fitted to both flat andcurved surfaces.

Clamcleat® rope cleats are not suitable for metal ropes.

Tapered Pad allows correctrope/cleating alignment. Cleatscan be mounted either way round.Pads can be stacked to increaseangle or create a riser block.

Backplate provides under deck support when bolting throughthin sections and is supplied withevery tapered pad.

Cages CL816 and CL817 withwear resistant stainless steel allow easy cleating at extreme angles.

Rivetting the CL211Mk2 or CL263. Rivet gunspacers are available free of charge. Speciallong mandrel alloy rivets are also available forCL211Mk2.
