PUBLISHER'S LETTER

Although we always plan our issues in advance

our editorial seems to have a mind of its own

and a sub theme always emerges. This month we

had a strong focus on cancer. Of course, that’s

entirely apt seeing as it’s our Perfect Healing

issue. What really came home to me though, is

how prevalent cancer is in our society.

The incredible struggle to heal and the devastating

consequences of what that healing involves

reveals an awesome number of brave people.

Reading Kathy Bruggeman’s cancer journey made

me so grateful for my health. Regrets about not

paying attention to lifestyle and health don’t help

in the midst of a dangerous diagnosis. More and more we realise how important

preventative care is.

Reviewing your lifestyle frequently is also imperative. It’s not difficult to make

enlightening and uplifting lifestyle changes. We strive to give you inspiring information

on the many ways you can do this. But in the fast pace of life, we don’t take enough

time to check our habits and implement healthy changes. Exercising daily makes you

feel good in so many ways, try the plank pose in our Move Well section. Read the

story on eating to prevent cancer or come and sample our new Sexy Food Bun-less

Burger at the Wellness Caf in Kloof street. You are guaranteed to forever change your

view of sprouts. Incidentally, James Kuiper from Sexy Food also had cancer. Drink

more water with some creative ideas on how to spike your water with herbs and

spices. Become a real flower child and grow edible blooms, they’re one of the leading

trends in culinary circles. Get a deeper conviction for living in accordance with earth’s

wisdom and beauty, teach your children compassion and follow some home-based

grooming rituals. Once again I wish you a fabulous month filled with wellness.

Yours in wellness

Love your laundry I have had my Spindel for a year now and it still remains my most favourite green innovation. Three minutes is all it takes to remove up to 80% of moisture from clothing. After that, laundry need only hang up for a fraction of the time. What’s more, it doesn’t use heat so nothing shrinks or gets spoiled. I put all my delicates in the Spindel without any worry. It comes in a nifty cylinder shape that’s portable and doesn’t need a lot of space. Spindel Eco Laundry Dryer R1599

Build a cleaner earth “Phew, I feel so amazing, we are a completely chemical-free household now.”

Hat’s off to Better Earth for being a South African brand of chemical-free earth friendly cleaning materials. With a few awards under their belt they are doing a great job of providing amazing alternatives. I find their air freshener spray irresistible; the smell of lavender and grapefruit is energizing and lovely. They also cover laundry, surfaces, dishes and other household products. Better Earth Air Freshener R42,99

Make fatty friends Omega 7 helps guard against the development of certain types of cancerous cysts, lumps and malignant cells. It promotes healthy cellular growth, can relieve chronic pain and inflammation, and strengthen joints and the nervous system. Get Omega 7 from dairy products or take this supplement from Nativa. Nativa Omega 7 30tablets R169,99

Hey Gorgeous Gorgeous is definitely the operative word when it comes to describing this new range of face, body and hair products. They are all made from the finest ingredients, 100% pure, natural, and free from parabens, SLS, alcohol and chemicals. Besides the fabulous packaging using these products will make your skin glowing, radiant and deliciously touchable. From R160 - R220

Skinny tan I love the idea of adding a bit of colour to my body in the throes of winter. Streak free self tanner that also helps you slim sounds phenomenal. The truth is, it has guarana in it that firms your skin and works to disguise cellulite. All ingredients like sweet almond oil are eco-certified and natural. Use their 7-day tanner, gradual tanner, 24 hour bronzer or ab tanner (great for men). Skinny Tan 7 day tanner R399, 24 hour bronzer R319

Naturally fragrancedPerfume is a woman’s best ally. This brand new range of natural perfumes from Acorelle is 100% natural, certified organic, based on the properties of essential oils. They have been developed with mood in mind. Choose from energizing, balancing or soothing blends. I couldn’t resist Lotus Dream from the relaxing range, which has a light and almost dreamy effect. Acorelle Lotus R572,99

“She believed in dreams all right, but she also believed in doing something about them.”

This month I am practicing being proactive. I love the idea of taking action, finding solutions and sorting out niggley things I have wanted to attend to for ages. Use Woman’s Month to give you extra impetus - take the bulls by the horns, honour your life and do what needs to be done.

TAI CHI

Being under a lot of pressure lately, I was lucky enough to be invited to Natalie Wittwen’s ‘Stillness In Motion’ Wu Tai Chi class in Gardens, Cape town, to help alleviate stress. Natalie is a qualified instructor, not to mention a very pleasant person to be around. She teaches at various venues, she’ll even come to you, and also does office visits.

Tai Chi is a form of martial art originating in China thousands of years ago. In modern day society, this soft form of practice is used for its health benefits and longevity. It is soft, light and relaxing for your muscles and vastly beneficial for your mind. It teaches you to be fully conscious of all your movements, and to breathe, relax and be aware. “Self-defence starts with you,” says Natalie. “Tai Chi also helps ward-off modern day diseases by building up your immune system.”

Tai chi gives you better balance, and strengthens the heart. It makes you more flexible and lubricates the joints. It reduces bodily pain and increases vitality. Mentally it reduces stress, relaxes, benefits concentration and mental focus. It improves memory; makes you happy and gives you inner peace. It’s definitely a great way to break away from crazy everyday living! Look for a teacher that focuses on structural and postural awareness.

STILLNESS IN MOTION provides specialised programmes focusing on stress, that incorporate massage and relaxing, yet energising movement and breathing exercises.

MORROCCAN OIL AT KAVANAGH HAIRDRESSING

Morroccan oil is the current trend in celebrity model circles and with runway stylists. If you think about it, models get a bad deal with stylists pouring on any amount of

hair spray or damaging products to get the hairstyle they want. So they especially, should be in the know about what’s going to help repair hair. Someone else who’s an expert is Steve Kavanagh. Years and years of owning hair salons and seeing results on his clients, and keeping up to date on the latest trends gives him undisputed insight into hair styling and treatment. Steve was the first to bring Morroccan oil into hair care in Cape Town. We were curious to see if all the hype was really worth it and went to try it out. Firstly, a trip to Kavanagh’s makes you feel very pampered and special. It is ultra-modern, (has great coffee) and extremely well-trained staff. After a head massage from heaven and a chance for the Morroccan oil to absorb my hair was dried and styled. Apparently the treatment formula transports lost proteins for strength; fatty acids, omega-3 oils and vitamins for shine as well as antioxidants for protection. It has very small particles which makes it easy to be abosrbed to fill gaps in hair created by heat, styling and environmental damage. I must admit, being the skeptic I am, I’ve joined the throngs of Morroccan oil fans. Thank you Kavanagh for making me look fabulous.

ESSE FACIAL

Esse is a Latin word that means ‘to be’. It’s an entirely South African skincare range and founded by Trevor Steyn who, while at University, became fascinated by the chemistry of Africa’s plants. After much study and research Trevor developed Esse with the vision of a beautiful, indefinitely sustainable life for all species. Esse use very high percentages of organic starting materials and are resolute about quality and safety. They have Ecocert certification which means their ingredients and packaging are safe and also considerate of the environment. Besides that, their products

are incredible to use. Their cocoa exfoliator still remains one of my favourite products. When I heard that Esse facials are available, I had to give it a try. I was lucky enough to get Kayleigh, an Esse ambassador, who was very informative about the product and explained in detail how it works. If you want a natural, organic range using the intelligence of local plants and a completely non-harmful yet effective skincare product then Esse is definitely the one.

Esse facials are available from WellSkin at Wellness Warehouse. Contact: 021 487 5454

ECO-CONSCIOUS HAIR DYE

I know grey hair is somewhat fashionable and ‘embracing your age’ is mature and self-accepting and etc but I seriously feel much too young to have grey hair. I’m not going to actually reveal my age but let’s just say I have at least twenty more years of hair dying in store for me. When you think of a monthly dose of chemicals over twenty years, it adds up to a huge amount. This not only means damage to your hair but the chemicals are absorbed through your scalp and into your blood stream as well. So, I did some research and found a product called ‘Love My Hair’ that professed to cover grey. It’s made without any ammonia, peroxide, PPDs or harsh chemicals, so it’s kind to your hair, gentle on the scalp and harmless to the environment. It’s natural, vegan, proudly South African and cruelty-free. Well, after trying it out I can say with certainty that it does cover all the grey, that it doesn’t have that horrible chemical smell, didn’t burn my scalp, didn’t dry my hair and also gave me a nice deep glowing colour. I feel very excited to have found a natural hair dye that works without any damage. Love My Hair is available in dark and light browns but doesn’t as yet have options for blondes.

Find it on the shelf at Wellness Warehouse in Kloof street, Lifestyle Centre.

How Amazoo Açaí arrived in Cape Town

Meet our supplier

After moving to South Africa from Brazil some four years ago, one

thing Chico and Renata couldn’t leave behind was their Amazoo Açaí smoothie... let’s just say it took lots of friends travelling between South Africa and Brazil with lots of luggage to keep the family stocked with their beloved berry.

After some time Chico decided the simplest solution was to bring it to South Africa himself. A few business meetings later, IBEV Liquid Health was started with Amazoo Açaí as its very first product.

We all know the generous nature of all Brazilians and wanting to share their love of Amazoo Açaí was the natural next step. The result is we now have Amazoo Açaí available at Wellness Warehouse.

What is Açai?Açaí (pronounced (ah-sigh-EE ) is a fruit that grows on Açaí Palm trees in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. It’s a dark purple small berry (smaller than a grape) and is mostly seed, covered with a small amount of pulp. About 90% of the Açaí berry is seed - it is important to note that no one eats the Açaí berry seed.

Acai HighlightsWe aren’t the only one’s that are impressed by Açaí. Here are statements from some powerful media sources.

Dr. Perricone, in his bestseller “The Perricone Promise” picks Açaí fruit as the number one Super Food in the world.

• In 2005, Oprah also called Açaí the number one Super Food, saying, “This little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world.”

• In 2004 The New York Times published a statement lauding the berry. “Rich in antioxidants and amino acids, Açaí is thought to be one of the most nutritional fruits of the Amazon basin.”

AMAZOO AÇAÍ

integrative healthbewell

Our story begins with a passionate Brazilian and his beautiful wife, who also happens to be a nutritionist, part time yogi, part time foodie, full time chef, and full time PA to the passionate Brazilian

Learn more about the nutritional value of Açaí

• Antioxidants are substances that prevent or slow the oxidation (ageing) process.

• Studies at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Ageing at Tufts University in Boston suggest that consuming fruits and vegetables with a high-ORAC value may help slow the ageing process in both body and brain.

• Fruits and vegetables tend to have the highest ORAC values. Per 100 grams - apples score 218, bananas 221, blueberries 2,400. And fresh Açaí berries have a whopping 5,500!

• Anthocyanins are flavonoid pigments that give plants and fruits their beautiful pigmentation - but it’s not all about looks. They have excellent antioxidant properties. The red wine grape, known for its role in heart health is attributed to its anthocyanin content. This is why fruits with bright pigmentation tend to have great ORAC values - they are loaded with anthocyanins. Açaí berries have a tremendous concentration of anthocyanins.

• Here is the interesting part - the antioxidant properties of anthocyanins are maintained even after eaten by another organism.

Açaí has over 30 times the anthocyanins as red wine.

In 2006, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave a ‘qualified health claim’ status to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 fatty acids, stating that ‘supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.’

While that may not sound like much, for the FDA to concede any healthy claim on something other than a drug is very impressive.

The Açaí berry is rich in healthy Omega fats. Nearly 50% of the Açaí berry is fat - with 74% of the fat coming from healthy unsaturated fats like Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9.

Rich in amino acids and protein Nineteen different amino acids have been identified in Açaí. Since amino acids are the building blocks of protein, it’s no surprise to find over 8 grams of protein in a 100 gram serving of Açaí.

Good source of vitamins and minerals Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C and E are all present in Açaí. In fact, Açaí contains as much Vitamin C as blueberries and has over 1000 IU of Vitamin A for every 100 grams of Açaí. What’s more, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc are all found in Açaí.

Good source of fibre For a fruit, Açaí has a strong fiber profile. There are about 14 grams of fiber in every 100 grams of freeze dried Açaí powder.

I have heard that Açaí kills cancer cells - is this true?A University of Florida study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry on 12 January, 2006 found that acai berries trigger a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested in vitro. While we consider this study a promising start, it’s important to understand that the Açaí killed cultured cancer cells in a test tube - this is different to killing cancer in the human body. Obviously, more research needs to be done before anyone can make cancer claims.

FULL OF FLAVOURYou would think anything this healthy must taste terrible but Açaí has a berry and chocolate flavour that’s truly unique and delicious. Açaí is eaten in smoothies and desserts or on its own.

GREEN SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTIONCurrently 60% of the energy used for the factory boilers comes from the Açaí seed. That means the factory uses all its waste for energy production. This returns the C02

necessary for photosynthesis (proportional to the seed that has been harvested) closing the cycle of clean energy.

Açaí come in a ready to drink tetra pak. It’s the first smoothie with a high Açaí pulp content giving the unique Açaí taste with all the benefits of this superfruit. It has the same consistency and pulp percentage of Açaí eaten as the Brazilians do, in a bowl.

How can I get fresh Açaí berries? If you happen to live in the Amazon rainforest you are in luck. Just climb up the Açaí tree and pick some fresh berries. Unfortunately, for those who don’t live in the Amazon rainforest, getting fresh Açaí berries can be close to impossible. Except of course you can get over a thousand berries from a 750ml Amazoo Açaí drink. Every berry is USDA Organic certified.

14 helping you live life well

You might be living but are you alive?

When you eat living sprouts and micro-herbs it’s like munching on sunshine and living energy, they raise the frequency of thoughts, and boost power throughout the body."

Some time back we published an article about Sexy Food and pioneer James Kuiper, and his flexitarian approach to eating. Since then he has launched Sexy Food into the Wellness Café in Kloof street, Cape Town and is attracting a noted crowd of dedicated followers. That’s because it’s not just a completely delicious plate of food he serves but an irresistible philosophy to carry you through life. This philosophy includes the concept of alkalinity and is highly relevant to those who have had cancer or chronic disease. We look more closely into the ideology driving the Sexy Food crusade; explore alkalinity in its cancer prevention role; help you find your own flexi diet and glide through the anatomy of the Sexy Food signature meal – the famed ‘bun-less burger’.

Page 15: Perfect Healing

One morning I sat in the Café for a few hours working on my laptop.

There was an underlying excitement as the new Sexy Food menu addition was being dished out. “Best meal I have ever had,” was probably the most well used sentence of the day.

“I can’t believe how delicious sprouts can be,” was another common response. But the meal is simply the introduction to a way of eating that brings completely rejuvenating energy, the chance for the body to detox, a sustainable approach to eating, and an opportunity to balance blood sugar and eliminate cravings.

Not only that, but anyone who has had cancer or chronic illness can feel assured they are eating to keep their body disease free and operating at maximum capacity. James had lymphatic cancer and before he knew about alternative treatments was subjected to bouts of aggressive chemotherapy and acidity. His body is highly sensitive to chemicals and because of this, he has pioneered a lifestyle of ultimate wellness that is life-giving, sustainable and well… sexy.

Sexy Food is alkaline based and free from gluten, soy, dairy, sugar, preservatives and funny business. Their meals are full of essential fats and promote detoxification and deliciousness. All meals are prepared in line with anti-cancer principles, and the bursting flavours appeal across all seasoned taste circles.

KEEP YOUR BODY ALKALINE Most Western diets create inflammation and high acidity in the body. An acid body is known as the perfect environment for fear to build and cancer cells to grow. An alkaline diet on the other hand will improve cellular pH, strengthen immunity, and is the best defense against inflammation. Sprouts & micro-greens in the form of living complete protein, lemon juice, pesticide free leafy greens, herbs and spices, vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower and carrots, soaked nuts and seeds, ripe peas, and gluten-free grains are alkaline examples. Fruits like lemon, grapefruit, tomato, avocado, fish (know who caught it), organic wild poultry, organic wild game - when the body is calling for them - can also (in respected amounts) be part of a healthy, alkaline oriented diet.

EAT LIVING PROTEINSprouts and micro herbs in their early growth stage are the most compact and nutrient dense in their plant life cycle. It’s like munching on sunshine and converts into pure energy. All the Sexy Food sprouts and micro herbs are grown and harvested by the Sexy Food team, without any chemicals or growing agents. They use alive protein to take the place of the bun in the bun-less burger. “It’s the alkaline based, sprouts and micro-herbs that’s the Sexy part of our food”, says James.

BE GLUTEN-FREE Glutinous grains cause inflammation. When the body is in a permanent state of digestive bliss, and slow release strength, it’s a prime condition for cancer to dissipate. A smashing sexy substitution for normal glutinous flour is coconut flour. Preferable grains to eat are whole, soaked and non-gluten like quinoa, buckwheat, millet, rice, and amaranth.

FORGET THE DAIRY In a study by Professor Colin Campbell, PhD from Cornell University, casein protein from cow dairy was tagged as one of the most cancer promoting foods. “Getting off dairy triggered my sexy journey to recovery after chemotherapy, there is only a very small population that can handle dairy,” says James. All dairy products should be avoided when counteracting cancer. Dairy products create inflammation. They also create high acid production in the body, causing interior clogging. “When going on a dairy expedition, make sure it’s non-pasteurised, and when drinking coffee try coconut oil instead of milk.”

USE GOOD FATS Use cold pressed natural oils like olive, coconut, macadamia and avocado oil. They are naturally anti-inflammatory, and will soothe and heal inflamed and potentially cancerous cells in the body. James describes them as your ‘sexy drive, lubricating the cylinders so the engine can fly.’ Oils to avoid in a cancer prevention diet and in general are corn, soy, canola, safflower, sunflower and any refined oil. Mostly these are highly processed and produced from genetically modified plants (known to increase cancer risk).

did you know?In the 1930’s, alkaline therapy or pH

therapy was developed as a natural

cancer treatment. It is based on the

fact that cancer cells metabolise

and grow in a very narrow pH range

(between 6.5 and 7.5). By increasing

or decreasing the cancer cell’s pH out

of this range you can theoretically

stop cancer progression. The pH

measure runs from 0 to 14. Less than

7 is acidic and more than 7 is alkaline.

Keeping your body in an alkaline state

means cancer cells are unable to

spread.

did you know?Processed oils are subjected to high

temperatures to improve shelf life.

This process changes the molecules

and they are unable to act as

natural conductors for the electrical

messaging in the body. The molecules

are ‘dead spots’ in the cells because

they cannot conduct electricity. This

interferes with healthy cell function

and can promote cancer progression.

Essentially, cancer cells are those that

no longer respond to intra-cellular

messaging and proliferate without

purpose.

SPROUTING PROCESS

Page 16: Perfect Healing

MAKE SWEET CHOICES Rather than using sugar, look for healthy alternatives. Sugar metabolism creates acid, which also supports cancer progression. A diet high in sugars and comfort food, triggers the insulin response. If you frequently eat sugar or fruit during the day, you suppress your immune function and increase the insulin levels in your body, creating insulin resistance. Insulin resistance has been directly tied to cancer proliferation. Processed sugar depletes magnesium in the body, another contributor to cancer proliferation. High fructose corn syrup, because of the way it’s processed, is high in mercury (a cancer-promoting toxin). Eliminate white sugar, high fructose corn syrup and only eat natural sugars in their natural state.

READ INGREDIENTS all the time and look out for sugar, it’s used everywhere. Any amount of refined sugar is not good. Honey in its raw, unheated form and coconut blossom are good substitutes. Your body will recognize and can assimilate sweetness in its natural form. Choose unsweetened applesauce, dates, figs, dried apricots, or fresh pineapple.

Coconut blossom sugar is a beneficial natural sweetener with less fructose and more vitamins and minerals than other sugar. Totally diabetic friendly, it contains trace amounts of vitamin C, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron and copper. It also has anti-oxidants and small amounts of phytonutrients, like polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanidin. It contains the B Vitamin inositol, also good for mood boosting.

“The most important thing to be aware of is that every body is different. Finding your own sexy blueprint and which foods work for you comes from learning to feel the affect of food in your body.”

DRINK FOR LIFE Swap alcohol for what James calls ‘nature’s non-alcoholic whiskey’. He is referring to buchu, which has incredible health and

detox properties. Like whiskey, it’s an acquired taste but after a few tots your body recognises the benefits and you will be hooked. Swap bottled, canned or frozen fruit juice for freshly squeezed veg juices, smoothies and spring water. Processed drinks with shelf lives, even fruit juices have high concentrations of sugar and many are highly acid forming. Don’t be fooled by the un-natural process of preserving drinks. Drink freshly squeezed lemon in hot or cold water every day, herbal teas love a lemon slice. Lemon is alkalinizing in your body. Drink fresh carrot or carrot-beet juice daily, these are healthy, alkaline juices for a cancer diet. Spring un-filtered water is the ultimate drink for life.

SWITCH ON YOUR RECEPTORS Once you become attuned to your body you will be able to feel when something is good or not good for you. Eating without consciousness makes us insensitive to what goes into our body. By practicing mindful eating we get that intelligence back. Our sense of taste has been hijacked by processed foods and flavour enhancers. Foods loaded with processed salt or sugar re-sets our natural taste receptors and puts us off course. “Once you start eating more naturally you get a strong desire for natural food and will easily be able to taste something that’s artificial, chemical or not good for you. You will feel when your body is in an acid state and will be guided towards foods that restore your alkalinity,” says James. The more acidic your body is, the more you will crave food that’s acidic. If your body is alkaline, you will naturally crave alkaline food.

“Figure out your own sexy blueprint and become a healthier more alkaline person. This will help you re-programme your taste buds away from acidic cravings. It’s a process that may take some time – but think of it as your life long sexy food journey. Remember, alkalinity applies to both food and emotions.”

LOVE WHAT YOU EAT “When you eat food your metabolism loves, your digestion has a dance with a long after-party,” says James. Most people think healthy food is hard to eat. Replace ‘healthy’ with’ sexy’ and on the contrary, there is nothing more delicious than food when it is prepared and combined properly. Eating food you don’t like won’t digest as easily in your body. Growing your own food is even more beneficial. James recommends growing sprouts and micro-herbs for the ultimate sexy food experience.

THE SEXY FOOD COMPANY IS FLEXITARIAN FRIENDLY This means a greater environmental awareness behind every food choice, a healthy attitude, a ‘no funny business’ approach, a right to feel sexy, and a flexible mind-set when measuring what ingredients work best for each individual’s unique digestive system. Listening to the body is key when mastering the Flexitarian Friendly lifestyle. If you don’t recognise the ingredients, or relate to the way it was prepared, your insides certainly wont. Your body might call for organic wild game meat on a certain day or you might be a sold-out vegan. Get to know your body so you can identify what’s best for your body.

International model Charmaine San Pedro has developed a recipe for the

ultimate healthy chocolate fudge bar with added protein and an abundance of healthy attributes. It’s also raw, gluten free, sugar free, egg free, dairy free, low carb and needs absolutely no baking. Charmaine believes this home-made fudge bar is far healthier than any protein bar you can buy. She uses her favourite protein powder that comes from Lifematrix in the form of their Vegan Super Smoothie Essentials. This is an unsweetened protein powder made with organic powdered sprouted brown rice, chia, pineapple fiber, raw cacao and inulin.

“It has a light smooth taste and it doesn’t have that whey powder taste that a lot of leading macho protein powders have. Packed with protein and pre-biotics, it is the perfect nutritional base for my chocolate fudge bar,” says Charmaine. “Brown rice protein is a convenient source of protein for those on a vegan or vegetarian diet and even for others that follow a strict healthy diet. Like other protein sources, brown rice protein can help with weight loss and management since it’s low in fat and generally low calorie. Recent research has also indicated that it can aid with muscle recovery and gain when consumed after a workout. It’s allergen-friendly and you can add it to almost anything: smoothies, cereal, juices and of course, this fudge bar!”

PROTEIN FUDGE BAR

Makes approximately 24 squares

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients together.

2. Using a spoon, add in coconut milk, almond butter and vanilla. Add water. The mixture might be crumbly, this is good.

3. Using your hands, form into a large ball of dough. After rolling the dough it should eventually feel like play-doh.

4. Dust parchment paper with cacao

powder. Press the dough onto the parchment and form into a large square. Cut into small strips.

5. Dust the top with more cacao. Top it with unsweetened coconut shreds, almond flakes or both. Cover it and keep it stored in the fridge. Grab a square at your tummy’s discretion.

NOTE: The texture of the bars is very soft, almost like cookie dough. If you add a little more liquid, they will become creamier. Once refrigerated, they will firm up but they won’t ever harden. At room temperature they will always be soft.

LAZY PEA SOUP

Makes approximately 3 litres

1. Add the peas, potato, carrots, onion and chicken stock to a big soup pot.

2. Boil hot water and pour into the pot until it reaches a level about 3cm above the ingredients – about 3 litres. Add salt and pepper

3. Bring to boil and let it simmer for about an hour.

4. While you are waiting, fry the bacon in a separate pan. Make half of it soft

and the other half crispy. 5. Once the pot has boiled for an hour,

use a hand mixer to liquidise the ingredients thoroughly. Make sure you blend all the potato pieces, it’s not great to get a potato clump in the middle of your masterpiece. If you don’t have a hand mixer, wait for the ingredients in the pot to cool slightly then use a standard blender.

6. Mix in the soft bacon. Chop up the crsipy bacon into small pieces and sprinkle it on the top. You can also add a drizzle of sour cream or plain yoghurt. Serve with love

NOTES: Pea soup is made in big amounts, at least 3 litres. The flavour won’t be as good if you make less. Ideally you make pea soup the day before eating, that way the flavours have time to blend together. Be careful when you reheat as it can burn easily. Use low heat and stir regularly. Pea soup freezes

really well so dish out meal-sized portions and freeze for busy days.

TRY THIS: If you want your soup to be vegetarian, you can always substitute the bacon for other flavours like grilled tomatoes, bell peppers and garlic. Use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock. Add herbs like rosemary and thyme. If you are adventurous, add a bit of red wine.

Cooking for a partner brought up in the mediterranean where food is a high art and rich cuisine abounds, is a challenge to say the least. Being Afrikaans, most of us ‘plaas meisies’ are raised to show our men love through their tummies by cooking, and when my best attempts weren’t matching up to his mamma’s expertise, I called Mom to the rescue. One Friday evening she popped in armed with ingredients, stories, three master recipes and a bottle of wine. This is where my pea soup comes from. It’s been a success all the way. If ever I want to see my best friend Marine, all I have to do is say, “I made Pea Soup.” Thanks Mom!

The pea is one of the oldest cultivated vegetables in the world. Although its origin is not clear, peas were found dating back to the Bronze Age in excavations in Switzerland; as well as in an Egyptian tomb at Thebes. Peas were popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Angus McIntosh, a.k.a Farmer Angus started farming on the

Spier Wine Farm, Stellenbosch in late 2008. With his first mentor, Christo Kok, they started getting cattle onto the land, establishing pastures and then brought chickens to the land to add to the fertility that the cattle were contributing to the farm.

Today Farmer Angus has 4,000 laying hens on the farm who overnight and lay their eggs in Eggmobiles. These Eggmobiles are moved to fresh pasture daily and there are no limits to how freely these hens can range during the day.

In January 2014, assisted by meat expert Mark Muncer, he opened a butchery on the farm where he processes his grass fed cattle. It is the only farm in the country that has an on farm butchery specializing in pure grass fed beef.

The beef is dry aged for 2 weeks before being processed by Farmer Angus himself under the guidance of Master Butcher, Spencer Nicholls. They only use non irradiated spices and no meat from any other animals.

In addition to selling eggs Farmer Angus also takes the small and odd shaped eggs he cannot sell and separates the yolks and whites which are sold in 1 litre bottles.

The beef products are many. Burgers, boerewors, breakfast sausage, biltong, dog treats, droewors and most recently beef broth made with organic vegetables, rainwater and the bones from Farmer Angus’ grass fed cattle.

It is said that our longest journey in life is about 25cm. This is the approximate distance from the Head to the Heart. It might be just a few centimetres but for some it can take a lifetime to get there. Healing our bodies, our emotions, our relationships with others and ourselves, and repairing destructive belief systems can be filled with obstacles and inconsistent results. Why? Healing from HEAD TO HEART

24 helping you live life well

Page 25: Perfect Healing

From Head to Heart

This is where true healing begins. Whilst the head or brain is responsible for cognitive functions and goes from point A to point B using logic - the heart is everywhere - open and expansive. Scientists map the frequency of the heart at 528hz calling it the ‘miracle healing frequency’. That’s because it’s infused with healing power and perfect resonance. Within it, it carries perfect symmetrical patterns that symbolise vibrant wellbeing in all facets of life. Living from the heart means radiance and magnetism – a life brimming with contentment.

Our minds, on the other hand, are constantly occupied by thoughts. If we track our thoughts and note them down, we are likely to be shocked. Try it for yourself: Just for an hour, keep a close watch over your thoughts. You will probably notice a lot of negative self-talk and worry. “What should I make for dinner....maybe I’ll get takeaway’s....oh dear, Rose is allergic to soy sauce....we can’t get Thai food, the last time we ate there her body just about packed up....now that I think of it, she hasn’t recovered properly yet....maybe her immunity has been damaged....I must take her to the doctor again.. (PANIC)...oh, my boss is looking at me, he probably thinks I’m wasting time, he’s been hinting about downsizing, I can feel it’s me who’s gonna get the boot (FEAR), come to think of it, he’s been acting strangely towards me lately… I know I work hard and get things done....or do I.... I did mess up the invoices last month....how could I...what an idiot (JUDGEMENT), but I can’t seem to focus properly, maybe there’s something wrong with me, what if I have the depression genes inherited from the family, after all, my mum couldn’t look after me properly when I was born.” (SADNESS).

Once your thoughts start looping into negativity, it’s difficult to stop the spiral of downward thinking. When examining your thoughts to see how many of them are negative and how many are positive, most people find they have more negative thoughts than positive. If we know that thoughts create reality, it makes sense then that your current reality will include the results of your negative thinking. Knowing that thoughts are so influential in shaping our reality, why then does choosing thoughts more carefully to create a life that matches our dreams, hopes and desires seem so elusive? It could be we need to create a habit of thinking in a more positive form or we need to learn how to discipline what we think about. Use these four mindful steps to get your thoughts to work for you.

Think of your thoughts as an offering to the Universe

This means your thoughts about your body, about yourself, your career, and about things that matter most to you. Turn the steering wheel of your thoughts gently and deliberately in the direction you want your life to go. Imagine all the experiences you want and think about them in a vibrant way - add beautiful sounds and voices, taste them, give them a fragrance and breathe it in. In this moment you are effectively creating your life with passionate intent. When you feel excited and have a surge of exuberant emotions running through your being, in that instant your vibrational offering to the Universe shifts and aligns with the life of your dreams. These new positive thoughts log into the abundant stream of wellness available in existence and will return with your new updated reality. There is no ‘evil’ intention in the Universe to sabotage your requests nor is there any malicious mischief or intent to cancel your highest desires. It just is. It listens, waits and responds. In every moment it offers you the potential to re-shape your life’s path.

Up-size your thoughts

Ever heard that one before? We’ve been led to up-size our meals, our drinks, our wardrobes, our credit, our material possessions - but never our thoughts, yet this is the single - most powerful shift you can make. Take for example someone in a state of pain or dis-ease. Focusing on pain or illness dilutes the potential of wellness and healing. Chronic attention to an

unwanted condition holds you in a space of disallowing your body from receiving solutions and resources for healing. You begin to focus more and more on the absence of health rather than on physical wellbeing. When you consciously bring awareness to your ‘thinking wheel’ you begin to slowly turn its direction to one that serves your highest needs.

TRY THIS Just for a moment - close your eyes, breathe deeply and gently, with each breath allow your body to gradually soften and relax. With great reverence, bring your attention to the trillions of activities being orchestrated in your body effortlessly and with such love. Deeply connect with the sheer genius of each cell as it serves you selflessly in every moment. This is its only mission. Receive this love in open gratitude and in doing, your thoughts will leap into the core of magnificence. This is instant up sizing!

Rewrite your inner story

You may have decided on a story about yourself and your life. Try choosing a new one. Release all emotions associated with being a victim of circumstances, events or relationships. Base it on vibrant wellbeing, joyousness and miracle healing. It’s a simple choice to become comfortable and set on a vibrational frequency that creates your destiny, as you want it to be. Drop your old story. It’s a boring one. Step into a whole new one and feel the ‘joire de vivre’ of conscious creation. You will begin to feel differently, your body might even react by tingling – this is a visceral reaction to the joyous chemistry you have activated within you. Be in it, own it and enjoy it.

Decide to Thrive

As you shift your thoughts into a place that serves you, you will notice changes. They might be subtle or strong but either way, receive them in joy. It means your inner being is becoming congruent with the vibrational offerings of your feel-good thoughts. When there is this match, life becomes an effortless miracle. It means you are in deep resonance with the bounty the Universe has to offer. You will experience unparalleled freedom in living joyously from a space that is the fullest expression of who you are. You will thrive.

did you know?Thoughts create matter. What you think about; becomes. If you change your thoughts you can change your reality.

Page 26: Perfect Healing

Most people think you can’t change your beliefs. But by changing your

perspective, a transformation in belief is highly possible. Let’s take a look.

We have beliefs. These beliefs influence our emotional responses to what happens around us. Our emotions spur us to act and we then get a result. But most of our beliefs and emotional responses to events lie deep in our subconscious. Sometimes we aren’t even aware of the beliefs we have.

So mostly, we create our reality from subconscious beliefs and emotions we are seldom aware of. A clue to knowing what beliefs are hidden in our subconscious is to look at the results we get from our lives. Here is a map showing this process.

If you reverse this process you can create your reality in an entirely new way.

CREATE THE REALITY YOU WANT

1. Rather than compulsively acting out from your beliefs and emotions, choose the kind of result/ life/ reality/ vision you want.

2. Choose the actions that create that result.

3. Choose the emotional state that best facilitates the actions.

Over time as you begin to experience a new reality you will start to transform your deepest subconscious beliefs.

Through this ‘reverse engineering’, you transform step-by-step and begin birthing new beliefs. Later these new beliefs play their own role in creating a new reality for you. This model is so powerful and effective it’s a core mainstay on our Wellness Coaching programmes.

HOW CAN I USE THIS CONCEPT?• Take a sheet of paper divided in half. • Think of a result you are getting in your

life that you are not happy about. Write it down on the first half of the page

• Working backwards, ask yourself which of your actions created that result.

• And what beliefs and emotions created those actions?

• Now using the second half of your page, choose a result you would much prefer getting, compared to the present one.

• Ask yourself what actions are needed to create that result.

• What emotional states are needed to facilitate those actions?

• What beliefs need to be in place to create those emotions?

It’s been three years since I was living a cancer nightmare. It took ten months and a fortune of money for the many doctors to finally figure out that my agonising symptoms were Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. During this time I had a new baby, a stage 3B diagnosis and a prognosis of only a few weeks to live. There is nothing that can prepare you for the C-word - even less as a new parent, where you seemingly have everything to live for after welcoming the light of your life into the world.

Your spirit transforms from someone who is ‘just living’, to a conquerer."

Healing through CANCER By Kathy Bruggemann

Owner of Mommy Matters.co.za

Page 29: Perfect Healing

I stepped into ‘fight’ mode, determined to not miss my little boy’s first

birthday, his first day at school, girlfriends, Matric farewell... I wanted to be part of every second, and did just about everything the Doctors told me to make sure I survived.

You don’t think about the purpose of it all in those moments. You just stop your life, and take the journey the dreaded disease has in store for you. For me that meant emergency doses of radiation to my chest to shrink a tumour surrounding my heart and lungs, then many months of chemo. Once diagnosed, cancer becomes your life. It becomes your family. Your daily routine revolves around tests, medicine or research. Yet your spirit transforms from someone who is ‘just living’, to a conquerer. I know I’m incredibly blessed to be in full remission within a year of the scariest diagnosis any family can be given. Many of the people I met along my journey weren’t as lucky, and that’s the reality of this disease. Researching my genetics, understanding the disease, getting the tools I needed to cope, and finding wisdom forced me to look at life in a different light. Having cancer has transformed me. These are some of the lessons I learnt.

Curb your Stress One of the biggest causes of Lymphoma, and most cancers is an aggressively stressful lifestyle. It’s no surprise that Hodgkin’s Lymphoma commonly hits adults between 27- 35, who, like me at the time, are building careers and putting in crazy hours. We all know stress affects health but do we take it as seriously as we should? I had the added complication of an extremely low immunity from my pregnancy, so while allowing my baby to grow inside me, my body also allowed the manifestation of disease during one of the most stressful times of my life. Review your stress levels daily, and find an outlet for it. Be conscious about your lifestyle decisions so you avoid unnecessary anxiety.

Meditate Self mastery is the key to overcoming adversity. My Haematologist’s assistant would regularly visit me in the isolation ward of the oncology unit, and one day she gave me the poem “Invictus” by William Earnest Henley, and made me read it aloud. It ends with the lines “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

Invictus is Latin for ‘undefeated’, and while imprisoned on Robben Island Prison, where he was incarcerated for 27 years, Nelson Mandela recited this poem to himself and other prisoners as a way to bolster their spirits, and motivate them to press onward. Finding positive affirmations to meditate on is a great way to turn your self-discovery time into healing. I wish I had taken more time during my journey to meditate and quiet my mind from the craziness of doctors and drugs, because most days it just overwhelmed me. If it was something I did before, perhaps I never would have been susceptible to such drastic disease. Now taking time to relieve stress is a daily ritual for me.

Do what you loveCancer forced me to walk away from a 13-year career doing something I thought I loved. I found motivation and created a purpose in my mind about the worthiness of it, but when I had to step away, cancer made me listen to my intuition. Was it something that gave me joy? What was my purpose here on earth? If I needed to start listening to my inner guidance, and not people or society around me, what would I be doing? I’m not saying walk out of the Bank or the Accounting Firm, burn your University Degree and go selling kayaks in Newfoundland cause you think that will make you happy, but more people could benefit from tuning into their intuition and making choices based on their inner truth, rather than societal pressure. This is your life. You only have one.

It doesn’t matter what you look like (to others)! This is probably the biggest lesson through this journey of self-discovery, and possibly the most superficial. Before my formal diagnosis, and I had just found a lump in my neck, I joked with my friends that if it was cancer, I would never have chemo because I didn’t want to lose all my hair. That might sound a bit silly, but in the end I had to, and I did lose my hair. My body became a human pin cushion and I had an access port inserted in my chest, chemo made me skinny, chemo then made me fat, with a crown of balding curls to wrap up my ‘look’ and I struggled with this throughout my experience.

Since actively listening to my intuition, learning to meditate and realising I was important, I started to love myself on a

whole different level. It didn’t matter what others thought of me anymore, and if I ever had to go through this again, I wouldn’t be as self-conscious. One thing that became evident was that those who weren’t bothered by my appearance through my pregnancy or cancer were people I wanted to stick around for the rest of my life, which brings me to the next point...

Don’t waste your time on relationships that don’t service you Not only do your relationships take strain through a cancer diagnosis, or any adversity, they show you who the ‘better or worse, richer or poorer, sickness and health’ friends and family really are. Chances are if they can’t handle your life challenge, they’re probably not going to handle your healing and who you become through it. Taking control of your life and being conscious is a step towards making yourself a whole and self-complete person. It changes how you review the people around you. Are they proud of how you cope and supportive of your decisions? If not, there probably won’t be place for them in your new, awesomely conscious life of self-appreciation.

While we can’t control what happens around us, we can control how we react. Will it give us strength? Wisdom? Patience? Perseverance? How about empathy for others?

Life’s greatest opportunities are often hidden in adversity. For me that was self-discovery on a radical level - the end of a career and a relationship that didn’t serve me anymore. The words of a fellow cancer-friend remind me daily that “I’m not just a survivor, I’m a conqueror”.

Doctors and patients have been amazed at the speed with which Ozone Gel helps rapidly heal a wide variety of skin ailments and scarring.

The relief you’ve been looking for is here.

Ozone is more than the paper-thin layer of gas high up in the atmosphere. It’s formed by the sun’s ultra violet rays and the air, it’s also formed during a lightning storm and is responsible for the fresh and invigorating air that we experience.

Also known as‘ enriched’ oxygen’ it is the most powerful natural

sterilising agent there is. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses are all quickly and completely destroyed by exposure to Ozone gas. Ozone is also non-selective in its action. So, unlike traditional antibiotics, microbes are not able to develop a resistance to it. Ozone is also a very powerful deodorising agent. Ozone was first used commercially to purify water in Europe over a hundred years ago and is being used today by thousands of cities around the world, Oxygen & Ozone are bubbled through the water, killing bacteria and viruses, reducing odour and taste, and leaving the water purified and safe to drink. This process is analogous to

the treatment of human blood.

Ozone is typically used in medical treatment through one of two ways. The first is through rectal insufflation, in which the Ozone is absorbed into the body through the major arteries in the colon. The second is through autohemotherapy. In this treatment, blood is drawn from the patient and has Ozone bubbled through it. Within a few minutes the blood is returned to the patient. In both treatments, Ozone is pulled directly into the blood and spreads quickly through the body.

Once inside the body, the Ozone attaches itself to diseased cells. Cells infected with a virus are already weakened because they are being used as a host by the parasitic disease. Once Ozone attaches itself to

the infected cell, the two dissolve and are soon flushed from the system. Healthy cells are completely unaffected, and there is no residual toxicity.

In addition to being bubbled through the blood, Ozone treatment can be very successfully applied externally for burns, wounds, and many other skin conditions in the form of ‘Ozonated oils”.

I met up with Regine Veraguas, an American based Life Coach and

Holistic Educator apprenticed to a legendary native Andean spiritual mentor, Koginka Kamaru Xue and who brings with her a message we all need to hear.

“I am privileged to be apprenticed to Koginka Kamarue Xue, a true Master in Spiritual Arts who works in sacred alliance with his ancestors, the Kogis. He is the founder of the Xolar Vibronics School and the Koginka Sewaluna Foundation. Koginka is dedicated to bringing back the original knowledge of ancient holistic wise ways. The most important of these is Sacred Reciprocity, which means having a reciprocal relationship with the earth,” says Regine.

Some time back the Kogi people, who live in an isolated mountaintop civilization, sent an urgent warning to the world. Filmmaker Alan Ereira was chosen to document their concerns that culminated in the film From The Heart of the World: The Elder Brother’s Warning. Normally, the Kogi don’t allow any outsiders into their environment or any interaction with the modern world but an exception was made because of the urgency and compulsion to draw attention to humanity’s treatment of the earth.

Their warning is that we are facing an ecological catastrophe. That the world, particularly the Western world, needs to radically change its way of living and its exploitative attitude to the natural world if it is to avert this catastrophe. They refer to themselves as Elder Brothers and refer to the rest of the world as the Younger

Brother. The Kogi say the balance of the earth’s ecology is suffering irreparably from modern-day devastation of resources by Younger Brother.

Regine notes how industry unthinkingly and unabashedly takes from the earth with an attitude of insensitivity and without reciprocating in any way. The Kogis exercise reciprocity for every single detail they receive from the earth and are very careful of not taking anything out of its natural place. This type of reverence sets up a reciprocal relationship with the natural world and serves to create much needed respect and reverence. This is in contrast with companies that harvest plants for medicine on a massive scale not concerned with sustainability or without regard for the environmental impact.

HEALING THE EARTH WITHSacred Reciprocity

34 helping you live life well

We speak so much about healing our bodies, our minds, our relationships but what about healing the earth? If, like the Kogi people from Colombia, you view the earth as a living being, we have a lot to do in the way of making reparations.

To avert a devastating ecological catastrophe, the world, particularly the Western world, needs to radically change its way of living and exploitative practices towards the earth.

"livewellgreen living

Page 35: Perfect Healing

A privileged look into the lives of the Kogi shows incredible architectural pathways through the forest, people that truly live in accordance with nature’s rhythm and essence. “Our actions of exploitation, devastation, and plundering for resources is weakening ‘The Great Mother’ and leading to our destruction,” they say. Through deep concentration, symbolic offerings, and divination, the Kogi believe they support the balance of harmony and creativity in the world. Similar practices are used to bless seeds for agriculture and for harvesting.

As an apprentice, Regine works towards sharing the wisdom received from her spiritual mentor. She is helping to enlighten people on how to reconnect to the natural and beautiful relationship we should be having with the earth. “Sacred Reciprocity is the real ecology”, she believes, “and impacts how we do things on every level.”

Her aim is to bring consciousness to people that want to make a change, and consciousness about how we use our energy and what type of energy we create. “Cape Town has powerful energy and is a great place to practice Sacred Reciprocity”. When you are in touch with nature, it speaks to you in a way that provides great wisdom and knowledge.

It gives us lessons of the soul and spirit, lessons we have to learn. It’s a way to bring back consciousness to our original nature. “Spiritual forces need our loving energy. We strayed and now we are making a commitment to reciprocate. The Earth is always there, calling us back,” explains Regine. “Our Creator is orchestrating that we return to her.”

How have humans become blinded to the healing, comforting, all-knowing, bountiful and soothing powers of nature? We have arbitrary studies about how letting kids play outside can reduce the symptoms of attention deficit disorder. How about letting kids grow up with a powerful connection to the earth, let them discover themselves in the context of a powerful planet and play and learn about creation in a way revealed by earth. Surely then there won’t be any attention deficit to begin with.

“As we tune, listen and align ourselves, life has a wise way of guiding us to be our authentic self and practical tools and elements are presented right in front of us and available to us. It is with a focused, attentive and ardent heart that we empower our Soul and Spirit to grow and open our consciousness.” Regine Veraguas

NATURE DEFICIT DISORDER Naturalist, Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, claims that “in the space of a century, the American experience of nature… has gone from direct utilitarianism, to romantic attachment, to electronic detachment.”

did you know? The Biophilia hypothesis was used by Edward Wilson to suggest the instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems. Wilson proposed the possibility that our deep affiliations with nature are rooted in our biology. Unlike phobias, which are the aversions and fears that people have of things in the natural world, philias are the attractions and positive feelings people have toward certain habitats, activities, and objects in their natural surroundings.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

The Koginka Sewaluna Foundation supports with heartfelt reciprocity all wisdom keepers and light shamans, with alliance to Mother Earth who sustains us relentlessly. Part of the Koginka Sewaluna Foundation mission is to allow supporters and other interested persons to learn from the tribes’ ancestral spiritual and environmental teachings. These are referred to as the ‘Holistic Wise Ways’, which means to return to simple and non-destructive ways of living and behaviours that are not harmful to nature and human interaction. They encompass a variety of cultures and interactions with all ecosystems and share these tribes’ culture of coexistence with the natural world and environment. We hope to teach the urgent necessity to recover the harmonious functioning of the world’s ecosystems and the responsibility each individual has in preserving and protecting such ecosystems.

The Xolar Vibronics School was founded by Koginka Kamaru Xue and focuses on holistic education and healing services as well as the art and science of vibrational healing. It helps people through a combination of spiritual practices and healing modalities including lifestyle mentorship and spiritual training. It is full spectrum healing which includes the spiritual art and science from the Andes of how the sun works, healing through the spiritual sun. Xolar Vibronics works with people to recover consciousness at an energetic vibrational level so we can return to our more authentic original vibrational identity unique for each one of us. Learn more about the Koginka Sewaluna Foundation at www.koginkasewalunafoundation.org. Here you will find links to two documentaries. The first is called From The Heart of the World: The Elder Brother’s Warning. Aluna is a sequel to this and was made by an indigenous film crew and the Kogi spiritual leaders.

VISUALISE IT

Whatever it is you most want to be doing, you must be able to see yourself doing it. For most of us, the things we do when procrastinating is probably the work we should be doing for the rest of our lives. Practice visualizing this concept with your eyes closed for a few seconds. Where are you working? What’s the room like? What’s the temperature like? How’s the lighting? How do you feel? Are you drinking a cup of coffee or a glass of water? What time of the day is it? The more senses you involve the better. Keep imagining this and you will increase the likelihood of your visions becoming reality.

BELIEVE IN IT

Believe you already have everything you need to be successful. Remember: You don’t need money to try out an idea. There are plenty of free and low-cost ways to get started with all kinds of projects—from using social media to smartphone apps to making use of fundraising sites. And when it comes to having the courage and ‘can-do’ spirit to get going, well, that’s something you clearly already have an abundance of.

TALK IT UP

Talk about what you do and want to do everywhere you go. You won’t believe the people you stumble upon who are willing to help. Whatever pain you’re healing or problem you’re solving or project you’re launching, share your knowledge and experiences with everyone who can benefit from them. When you help as many people as you can, those people will connect you to all kinds of resources—everything you need to get started. Just let it happen, and smile as often as possible.

Edible Flowerslivewelllivewelldo it yourself

38 helping you live life well

For thousands of years, culinary afficionados have been adding flowers to traditional dishes. Rose petals are commonplace in Indian desserts and squash blossoms a regular in Italian food. Flowers add colour and whimsy not to mention flavours from spicy to herbacious, floral or fragrant. They are commonly used in salads, teas, and as garnish for desserts, but can also be used creatively – spicy chive blossoms can be rolled into handmade pasta dough, petals into homemade ice cream, or even pickled. Some make fabulous floral syrups. We speak to Richard Morris from Starke Ayres about flowers that are good to eat.

“I put a hibiscus flower in every cup of tea I make. It’s sweet, sexy and cleansing.” Mario Batali"

Page 39: Perfect Healing

Edible flowers are perfect for anyone with an interest in gardening or

food, and are highly versatile plants providing a visual and culinary feast. You only need a small courtyard garden, balcony or windowsill to enjoy edible flowers.

They are also safe for children, many common garden plants are poisonous, so planting edible flowers is a sure way of avoiding danger. Be assured that if flowers do get subjected to a toddler taste test they aren’t poisonous. Kids will enjoy planting and then eating their flowers straight from the garden.

NASTURTIUMS

Flavour profile: Slightly sweet, peppery, spicey with a slight bitterness

Nasturtiums have a vibrant flavour that starts out slightly sweet before developing a peppery, spicey finish. Combine them with vinegar in a salad dressing. You can also make capers from their buds.

PANSY BLOSSOMS

Flavour profile: Mild citrus, mint

Sweet pansy petals enhance both flavour and appearance. They are beautiful additons for for desserts and salads. Pop them on top of vanilla cupcakes, add them to tarts, spring rolls and ice cube trays for cocktails or flavoured water. You can also boil them in syrup, they make a natural food colouring and turn to a vibrant violet colour. They look beautiful on salads.

LAVENDER

Flavour profile: Sweet, aromatic, herbaceous

Lavender adds a beautiful finish to almost any dish. Use it in pastries and ice-cream. Lavender is also fabulous in savory dishes. Add it to your salad vinegrette or put a sprig in your favourite cocktail. Shake up some lemon juice with gin, or a tot of liqueur, or top with champagne and decorate with lavender sprigs.

ANGELICA

Flavour profile: Slight liquorice flavour

Depending on the variety, the flowers range from pale lavender-blue to deep rose. The roots and seeds of garden Angelica are sometimes used to flavour gin, and more especially the liqueur Chartreuse. Use them decoratively on cakes or in salad.

CARNATIONS

Flavour profile: Sweet, perfumed

Once trimmed from the base, carnation petals are sweet and taste similar to their perfumed aroma. They can be steeped in wine or eaten plain.

CHAMOMILE

Flavour profile: Faint apple flavour

Chamomile flowers make a great tea. Be careful though, ragweed sufferers may be allergic to chamomile. Freeze them into ice cubes for a stylish ice block display.

MARSH MALLOW

Flavour profile: Sweet and delicate flavour

As you might have guessed, the marshmallows we know used to be made from Marsh Mallow flowers. You can eat the flowers just as they are. They are sweet and delicious.

ROSE

Flavour profile: Sweet, aromatic flavour

Remove the white, bitter base and the remaining petals have a strongly perfumed flavour perfect for floating in drinks or scattering across desserts, and for a variety of jams. All roses are edible, with flavour more pronounced in darker varieties. Soak the petals in coconut blossom sugar and freeze them. Use to decorate desserts.stews or salads.

HIBISCUS

Flavour profile: Slightly acidic

Boil up some hibiscus flowers, add some stevia and you have a tasty beverage with a vibrant cranberry flavour. Hibiscus is commonly used for tea and tarts.

SIGNET MARIGOLD

Flavour profile: From spicy to bitter

If you dry and crumble the petals they make a good substitute for saffron and have a unique and subtle flavour for use in casseroles, breads, and omelets. You can also use them in a stir fry or in rice, soups, stews or salads.

SUNFLOWER

Flavour profile: Leafy, slightly bitter

Steam your sunflower petals to remove some of the bitterness. The unopened flower buds can be steamed and eaten like artichokes.

DANDELION

Flavour profile: Young buds fried in butter taste similar to mushrooms

Dandelion makes a potent wine. Although they are quite bitter they have a hint of sweet grassiness that evens out the bitterness.

JASMINE

Flavour profile: Delicate, sweet

Use jasmine to make a fragrant tea.

Safety GuideAs beautiful as flowers are, some of them can be dangerous. Make sure the flowers you choose really are edible. If unsure, consult a reference book or expert.

• Eat flowers you have grown yourself, or know to be safe for consumption. Flowers from a florist or nursery may be treated with pesticides or other chemicals.

• Do not eat flowers you pick by the roadside or in a park. It’s likely they are either treated with a growing factor or polluted by car exhausts.

• Eat only the petals, remove pistils and stamen before eating.

• If you tend to be allergic, introduce edible flowers gradually - they may exacerbate allergies.

• Keep your flowers fresh by putting them on a moist paper towel and refrigerate in an airtight container. This will make them last. Ice water is a good revitaliser.

• For the best flavour, pick your flowers early in the day. Unopened, faded or wilted flowers can be quite bitter.

Sitting in front of the open fireplace on one of the elegant, sleep inducing couches, sipping a glass of wine and drinking in the view was one of our favourite pleasures during our short stay. Jackson and his team offer friendly service in the elegant dining room. There’s also the option of dining outside on the balcony if weather permits. Getting out and about offers endless exploration. We ended our experience at Whale View Manor with a Spa treatment at the experienced hands of Molly. BOOST YOUR METABOLISM

44 helping you live life well

Winter fuels the temptation for comfort food while cold and rainy conditions makes it harder to get out and exercise. It’s no wonder we usually pack on a few after months of cold weather. Counteract the trials of winter with metabolism boosting tips to keep your body in top shape. Here are a few quick tips you can use before summer comes along.

"Make a big pot of green tea and sip it throughout the day

Page 45: Perfect Healing

did you know?Strength training, that is, building muscle can raise your resting metabolism by about 100 calories per day. An average 30 year old woman strength-training twice a week for 30 to 40 minutes will, after four months increase her resting metabolism by about 100 calories a day. This effectively re-sets your thermostat to keep running high even when you aren’t exercising.

STAY HYDRATED We all love the drinks outing or red wine by the fire, but research shows that the day after a party night, there will be a significant decrease in your metabolic rate. Combine this with a headache and junkfood craving, and you have double trouble. If you live a stressful lifestyle, avoid fizzy drinks and alcohol, these will raise the stress hormone cortisol, which tells your body to hold onto fat in stressful situations. Drink water as the best way to get rid of any toxins from the night before. Drink warm water to help quell the temptation for junk food. You can also control cravings by adding something with the same taste as what you crave, to your water, If you crave the sweet taste, add a pinch of coconut blossom sugar; if you crave salty, swallow a pinch of Himalayan salt with your water. Being well hydrated will make your body perform at its best.

CHECK YOUR CALCIUM INTAKE It is very important to have calcium in your diet. Research shows that a decrease in calcium levels triggers the same hormone that stores fat. Get your quota of calcium by making sure you have a daily dose of salmon, cheese, yogurt or tofu for breakfast. Add some Vitamin C to help your body absorb the calcium.

Calcium and Vitamin C make a great team, calcium speeds up your metabolism, while vitamin C helps the body absorb this mineral, creating an overall win.

DRINK THE RIGHT TEA Our two favourite metabolism boosting teas are White Tea and Green Tea. Make up a big pot and sip it throughout the day.

White Tea - Stimulates Fat Burning

Made from young leaves and buds, white tea stops new fat cells from generating and also stimulates fat burning. It fights germs and has an anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal effect. Steep white tea for a bit longer than other teas – from seven minutes up to ten will do.

Green Tea

Green Tea is well known for helping with weight reduction, that’s because it boosts metabolism and burns fat. It is rich in antioxidants and said to lower blood sugar levels. Go for an organic variety to minimise the risk of contamination. Green Tea should be steeped for at least three minutes before pouring. Researchers found that catechins

in green tea may improve fat oxidation and thermogenesis, (your body’s production of energy, or heat, from digestion). You need to make it a habit though, up to 5 cups are needed a day to increase your energy expenditure.

ZzzQuality sleep is key. Seven to eight hours is crucial for an optimum metabolism balance. Anything less can affect your body’s ability to burn calories. Too much sleep can do the same thing. Keep your sleep times consistent for best results.

EARLY WORKOUT

An early morning run is not only the best way to wake up, but doing cardio in the cold burns extra fat. Challenge yourself even further by alternating with a hot and cold shower after your run. It might be a gruelling thought but it will up your circulation and is worth the fat burn. Make sure you include some weight training, the muscle you build will continue to burn fat even when you aren’t doing any exercise. If you are short on time, do quick bursts of sprinting or interval training, allows you to burn more calories in less time.

LIGHT UP Research shows that too much time in a dark environment actually stimulates the same physiological function in the body as gaining weight and sleep. Your body functions best between 11am and 3pm, so make a point of going for a lunchtime walk or getting out during those times. Not only will you get fresh air, but you will increase your heart rate.

SNACK REGULARLYSnacking regularly is not necessarily a bad thing, if you are eating the right food, that is. If your stomach is talking to you, it means it wants fuel. Not answering your stomach, will slow down your metabolism. Have some high fibre, high protein snacks on hand during the day. Vitamin B is also key, include small amounts of nuts, seeds and chicken, beef or fish into your diet. Don’t forget about legumes, they are great for speeding you up and are also packed with fibre. Omega-3’s found in fish, flaxseed and walnuts will balance blood sugar and help control inflammation. Most importantly, eat breakfast. Eating in the morning kick-starts your metabolism.

DRINK SOME HEAT

Mix up the drink from the famed Master Cleanse detox diet and not only will it speed up your metabolism but it will detox your body at the same time. Food that burns, like those with chillies and peppers stimulate calorie burning in the body. The Master Cleanse drink consists of freshly squeezed lemon, a pinch of cayenne pepper and either molasses or pure grade maple syrup blended together with fresh spring water.

CHOOSE ORGANICNon pesticide fruits, vegetables, and grains keep your fat-burning system running at optimum speed because they don’t expose your thyroid to toxins.

THE LEMONADE CLEANSING DIEThas been used for decades. It was designed in 1942 by Naturopath Stanley Burroughs as a liquid fast to rid the body of toxins. Everyone is subjected to pollutants – from the air we breathe; water we drink; chemical residues in processed foods; the medicines we take; and heavy metals in food and cooking utensils. These pollutants tend to land up in our tissues and organs stopping the body from working optimally.

DOLPHIN PLANK POSEGet this pose right and it will become your favourite way to strengthen not only your core but tone your arms, legs and in fact your whole body. If you have a day where you just can’t get to do your exercise routine, use plank as a concession. Practice building up strength in this pose and you will see the benefits it brings.

Benefits: • Calms the brain and helps relieve stress

and mild depression• Stretches the shoulders, hamstrings,

calves, and arches• Strengthens the arms and legs, and

core• Helps prevent osteoporosis

CAUTION: If you have neck injuries support your forehead on a block

48 helping you live life well

did you know?Your core makes up the centre of your body and encompasses the spinal column, which means all movements pass through your core. Strengthening your core brings increased balance and stability, better posture and reduced back pain. Having a strong core keeps your body aligned, minimising the strain on muscles and joints. The muscles that make up your core act as a shock absorber during running and this protects your joints.

Lie flat on your stomach with legs stretched out behind you. Put your forearms on the ground in front of you with elbows directly under your shoulders. Clasp your fingers lightly together. Tuck your toes under and lift your body up into a plank formation. Your torso should be parallel to the floor.

Press your inner forearms and elbows firmly against the floor. Firm your shoulder blades against your back and spread them away from the spine. Similarly spread your collarbones away from the sternum.

Press your front thighs toward the ceiling, but resist your tailbone toward the floor and lengthen it toward the heels. Lift the base of your skull away from the back of the neck and look straight down at the floor, keeping the throat and eyes soft.

When the body is engaged in a challenging pose we often forget to breathe. Make sure you keep breathing in long steady breaths with an even exhale and inhale motion.

Stay anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute. Then, release your knees to the floor with an exhale. Do as many rounds as you want.

Tips: To build arm and shoulder strength, particularly for forearm stands, rock your shoulders forward of your elbows, and then back behind your elbows. Keep your belly lifted and lower back puffed up with your breath.

Step by Step

Make sure you keep breathing in long steady breaths with an even exhale and inhale motion."

CHANGE YOUR LIFE

50 helping you live life well

When Brian Berkman’s doctor told him he was dangerously unhealthy, he needed to radically change his lifestyle. Setting his mind to what seemed to be an impossible challenge, he lost 83 kg – naturally.

When did you know you’d reached your health ‘rock bottom’?In July 2011. I weighed. 153Kg. I had diabetes which my doctor said wasn’t able to be controlled with oral medication any longer. Injecting insulin came with the risk of gaining weight. I knew then I’d reached a point where I had to change my lifestyle.

How long did it take you to reach your goal weight? It took about 18 months. During this time I had to make hard life changes. At first I believed that bariatric surgery, which would make my stomach smaller, meaning I absorbed fewer calories, was the answer. It took some time to see if my medical aid would approve the surgery, though, and that time was a godsend. It gave me the chance to notice that changing my lifestyle alone (which I had to do anyway before having surgery) could be the answer to my weight problems.

Besides being overweight, what other symptoms of ill health did you have? As the son of a pharmacist I was used to taking medication for a litany of conditions to the point that, at my heaviest, I was popping 22 tablets a day. It still amazes me how we can convince ourselves that we are not sick when our bodies are telling us we are.

I believe most of my issues related to my obesity. Even things like constant athlete’s foot and eczema, not obviously related to overweight, have cleared up since reducing my weight. I also had a lot of anxiety which, while I still am a worrier, is much less debilitating and doesn’t require medication now. I do still suffer from nasal allergies though and would probably be better off not eating dairy but I’m not ready for that move just yet.

How did you discover LCHF eating? (Low carbohydrate; high fat)I was following an even more restricted diet plan than my dietitian prescribed while preparing myself for the bariatric surgery. Her low fat, low calorie diet recommended oats porridge for breakfast. I happened to hear Professor Tim Noakes being interviewed on the radio about low-carb eating where he suggested eggs instead of oats or cereals for breakfast. I did that.

I introduced high-fat foods into my diet only after I’d reached about 90kg and then shed the additional 9kg to the 81kg that I am now and have been for almost two years of following his low-carb, high-fat diet. I like how I can eat as much as I like, without picking up weight. Well, that’s providing I avoid all starch, eat only low-carb vegetables, and avoid sugar and alcohol.

"After losing 83 kilos over two years, I’m starting a diabetes revolution

did you know?Sever obesity can cause a 14 year reduction in life-span. U.S. researchers combined results from 20 previous studies and found that a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 (considered severe obesity) raises the chances of dying early from heart disease, cancer and diabetes compared to people of normal weight.

TYPE 2REVOLUTION

I’m so committed to healing Type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes I’ve started what I call the Type 2 Revolution. It’s a support group for obese people with diabetes who need the support to make themselves well again. We work through 12 steps with the aim of helping people make lasting life changes and gaining lasting health.

12 Steps:1. Know you are sick2. Know why you want to get

better3. Test the reasons you believe

you will fail4. Plan to succeed5. Ask for help, join support

groups – I recommend SleekGeek and, of course, Type 2 Revolution

6. Change how you think about certain foods

7. Change how and where you eat

8. Get moving 9. Risk losing people you love10. Recognise how being fat

served you in the past11. Celebrate every achievement12. Express gratitude for your life,

health and people that love you.

When introducing exercise into your life, what approach did you find most successful? I’ve always been a member of a gym but a Tygervalley Virgin Active biokineticist called Johannes Janse van Rensberg, gave me the best advice: get fit slowly. Swimming is the most effective way to do this and avoid injury.

What are the biggest changes in your health you’ve noticed since changing your lifestyle? I no longer take medication for type 2 diabetes! The most unexpected change is that I feel smarter. My mind is brighter than it was before and it takes less effort to think things through. I guess my brain also had to fight the stress of being 70kg heavier than it needed to be.

I can also do a whole bunch of physical things I not only didn’t want to do previously but didn’t believe I’d be able to manage. Things like regularly climb the mountain behind our house in Pringle Bay or cycle and kayak (I recently went on a week’s kayaking through Madagascar) but most of all I feel as if I’ve been given a second chance at life.

What advice do you have for our readers (whether new to living life well or not)? If you are obese and have type2 diabetes I believe you have the ability to be symptom free without the need for medication by changing your life. It isn’t easy but it also isn’t as difficult, or impossible. I also believe that I was addicted to sugar and carbohydrates, which produce sugar in the blood. I had to wean myself off these ‘poisons’. All previous diets just kept me teetering on the edge of my addiction and always hungry - something I hardly ever feel now.

The best way to get, and stay well is to find the right motivation. These are some of the reasons that kept Brian going on his journey to wellness.

Why I eat healthily and stick to my eating plan:

• I can participate in walks and hikes.

• I can kayak, snorkel and ride a bicycle.

• I can fit comfortably into an economy plane seat.

• I have stopped taking 15 pills every morning and 7 at night.

• I have reduced the risks associated with being diabetic like gangrene and nerve damage.

• I have stopped damaging my joints.

• I have the energy to climb the stairs at home.

• I can buy clothes off the rack at any store.

Brian Berkman has been in the communications industry for over 20 years as PR consultant and journalist. Most recently, he is building his Type2 Revolution support group for people with type2 diabetes who want to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. His mission is to be a catalyst for positive change.

French Woman Don’t Get Facelifts: The Secret of Aging with Style and Attitude by Mireille Guiliano (Doubleday)

French Woman Don’t get Facelifts is about ageing gracefully. It notes that French women (with a life expectancy of 84) have an exceptional attitude toward ageing—in France, many believe old age begins at 80. Expect tips on hairstyles, makeup, healthy recipes and eating, and how to nurture your body as if it were a cherished garden. Guiliano maintains ageing has much more to do with how women think of themselves than with facelifts or outward appearances; nevertheless, dressing stylishly and appropriately, making time for sleep, play, love, laughter, and, of course, the occasional glass of wine are all part of ageing gracefully.

Clean & Lean Diet: The Cookbook by James Duigan (United Book Distributors)

James Duigan, owner of A-list gym Bodyism and the man behind some of the world’s most beautiful bodies has a long list of celebrity clients including Elle Macpherson, Hugh Grant and Rosie Huntington-Whitely. The Cookbook has over 100 delicious recipes and ideas that allow a flexible eating plan to rid your body of harmful toxins and an approach to food and eating that allows you to feel good about yourself and your body. Kale and Goats Cheese Salad, Quiche with Brown Rice Crust, Lettuce Wrap, Sirloin with Rocket and Watercress Salad, Lemongrass and Coconut Prawns with Glass Noodles are just some of the options. Clean & Lean is not about calorie counting, self-denial or fad eating. It is about reassessing your relationship with food and learning to break bad eating habits and cycles. Children learn at a relatively young age to empathise with others –

at the age of around four years, they begin to understand other people’s feelings in relation to their own. But there’s a subtle difference between empathy and compassion. It’s a similar emotion in that you are able to recognise and even feel another person’s pain; but empathy is passive whereas compassion is coupled with a desire to do something positive about that pain. Bereavement is a good example; an empathetic person will consider the emotional turmoil of losing a loved one, they will find similar experiences in their own life to draw on in order to fully understand the loss. A compassionate person will do all that, but will be compelled to help in some

way, by reassuring, helping out with day to day tasks, or doing something that counts.

AT HOMEWith just about any life lesson, the first experiences are at home. As a parent, the responsibility is to teach with actions - it’s the unsaid that holds far more meaning than words alone. If you truly want to teach your child compassion, you need to display it yourself. But, and this is important, it’s also vital to not let yourself or your child get so concerned that you become an emotional sponge. Be mindful of keeping their problem in perspective in terms of your own life and realise that some people need their challenging experiences to stimulate growth in their lives.

Making sound effects or singing through sentences is often more entertaining to kids."

did you know? There’s a noted difference betweeen compassion and co-dependency. Compassionate intentions are lead by selflessness and love; where co-dependency is fuelled by self-protection. Compassion and loving kindness can be learned in much the same way as learning a musical instrument.

While just about every parent aspires to teach their children great life lessons, it’s also important to understand just what the results of those life lessons need to be.

Learning compassion

Page 55: Perfect Healing

55www.wellnesswarehouse.com

eco mom & babylovewell

Talk to your child about what compassion is – for example if you see a beggar on the street, chat about why that person is begging, what their life may be like and how they must feel. Then ask your child what they would like to do to help that person. In that way you instil both empathy and the more active result of compassion.

VOLUNTEER TOGETHER

An excellent practice to demonstrate compassion is to give your child the opportunity to volunteer to serve other people. Working at a charity allows them to experience the joy of giving to someone else for no tangible or material gain for themselves.

Aside from compassion, volunteering offers numerous life lesson opportunities, not least the belief that you can make a difference. It is a wonderful self-esteem building lesson and cements the ability to be compassionate. When you believe that your actions matter, you’re more likely to take action.

GET ANGER OUT OF THE WAY

A building block to compassion is letting go of anger. It’s very difficult to feel any positive emotion when anger is clouding your vision. Once again, talking to your child about any anger they might have will help them to understand their emotions, express them and let them go.

As the Dalai Lama advocates, talking about how anger can lead to action or change in a positive way helps alleviate the negative aspects of anger. Help your children turn anger into compassion by discovering what led to the circumstance or situation that made them angry. Allow them to explore and unpack the reasons behind other people’s behaviour. For example, a bully at school might be living in a broken home, causing them to lash out. By exploring reasons, you will assist your child to see other people in a different light and be less judgemental; and so, more compassionate. Note that it’s also important to teach your child not to brush off bad behaviour simply because there is a reason for that behaviour.

LEARN TOGETHER

The best way to learn is to teach and one of the true joys of parenting is the incredible lessons you learn from your children, as you’re teaching them. By being mindful of finding examples of compassion to teach your child, you’ll build a greater ability for compassion yourself. And this will further cement this important life lesson in your child.

WHY IS THIS LESSON IMPORTANT?

Numerous studies on compassion have shown incredible benefits of this emotion. Here are just some study results:

• Compassionate action activates and strengthens pleasure and reward circuits in the brain, leading to an increase in happiness

• It can make you more resilient under stress by lowering stress hormones and strengthening the immune system

• Compassion can make you a better parent, or a more nurturing human being – compassion breeds compassion

• Being supportive of a friend or loved one increases the relationship satisfaction of both individuals

• Compassion increases your social ability, which means you’re less likely to be lonely

did you know?Goedgedacht Trust has been at the forefront of promoting and supporting communities with its People out of Poverty (POP) programme that provides much needed support to rural children. The POP programme starts by caring for pregnant woman to ensure their children have the best start to life and continues supporting these children all through school.

Hi, I’m Mikal Lambert. I’m the new kid on the block having just migrated to

the Western Cape from Kwazulu Natal. I’ve been working in food security for a few years now growing food gardens at schools and community centres; working with communities to promote environmental awareness and training people in permaculture.

A few months ago I heard that Goedgedacht Trust were keen to develop a one acre permaculture farm and training centre. For almost any ‘permie’ this is a dream come true: to create a garden full of organically grown food and teach others to do the same… life doesn’t get better than this.

The permaculture garden ‘Twalap Tuin’ is part of the next phase of the POP programme that supports rural children after their time at the Goedgedacht Leadership College. Here, young people learn leadership skills and practical tools to implement in their communities and promote internal transformation.

Twalap Tuin will be both a classroom as well as a living expression of what sustainable living can look like. With an emphasis on food security, alternate energy production and waste management techniques these young leaders get the opportunity to see essential aspects of modern living provided in a sustainable manner. Young leaders will also be involved in community projects with the opportunity to develop many of the soft skills that will support them as they transition into the leaders of tomorrow.

It’s a an exciting new project and I’m really glad to have the opportunity to be working with an amazing team of people using permaculture to cultivate leaders and grass roots transformation in South Africa.

I’m often asked, “So, what is permaculture?” invariably that leads to a long conversation

about sustainability and climate change and all the problems we face as a global community moving into an era of unprecedented impact on the planet. The difficulty is that there is no single answer, permaculture has as many definitions as there are permaculture designers.

A generic definition may be something like: Permaculture is often defined as a design system that emphasises the careful placement of elements in an environment to maximize efficiency and productivity for the benefit of the Earth and people living in that environment. With the major thrust of permaculture being about care for the Earth many different kinds of activities fall within this scope. The way you build your dream house, the materials you use, where they come from, the labour force used, and where they come from are intimately connected to permaculture. So is what you do in that house and surrounding. In this way permaculture gets involved in every aspect of human life from the materials economy, social, cultural, environmental even our spiritual lives (although that’s a controversial aspect in the global permie community).

Bill Mollison and David Holgrem came up with the term and original concepts for permaculture starting with basic ethics and principles. Using these as guiding lights people around the world have shaped and moulded permaculture into the dynamic organic concept it is constantly transforming into.

The Ethics of Permaculture:1. Care for the Earth2. Care for the People3. Sharing of surplus

The principles of permaculture provide technical support for designs and actions but are themselves so broad that they inform our ideas rather than dictate them.

This has been the genius of the system that allows people to create for themselves.

Some of the principles are:1. Work with nature rather than against2. The problem is the solution3. Make the least change for the greatest

effect…the list goes on but I will let you discover more for yourself.

I’m sure by now you’re thinking, “gee this is pretty easy stuff!.” Well, it is. Once we start to harness the natural potential of the things (elements) around us, placing them in the best positions in time and space to serve the environment and ourselves we start living permaculture. And we can all do it. A simple example is turning our waste into life giving humus (decomposed organic material). By recycling un-enjoyed food back into nutrients for the soil we serve the Earth by making food for the soil. This is done using the natural processes of decomposition, transforming what could be a smelly landfill problem into a solution for our garden. And so the work of permaculture begins.

If you want to get involved or support this programme contact Mikal Lambert [email protected]

or call cell: 084 961 9985 www.envirosolutionscentre.com

We catch up with Mikal Lambert in his one man mission to grow the concept of sustainable living. As he heads off to a farm administered by the Goedgedacht Trust he reports on Twalap Tuin, the permaculture garden he will be working with.

NATURAL PET CARE By Paul Jacobson owner of Vondis Holistic Pet Nutrition

Vegetables & LegumesSuperhero food for pets

Almost everyone acknowledges the positive health impact of a natural and wholesome diet, and the benefits of eating vegetables high in minerals and vitamins. Fresh vegetables, fruit and legumes provide essential natural anti-oxidants helping to protect the body from illness and poor health. This applies to both humans and animals.

Pets fed on table scraps that include vegetables are proven to perform very well. According to Paul, dogs can no longer digest copious amounts of raw meat and prefer a diet rich in vegetables and nutritious pulses.

Fruit in smaller quantities can also be beneficial, although those with high sugar levels should be avoided.

There is a growing trend worldwide towards natural and organic food for humans and animal alike. With this in mind many commercial pet food companies are jumping on the bandwagon and aligning themselves with this up and coming lucrative market by making claims that their pet food is natural and organic.

We often find that pet food labels claim their food is ‘naturally preserved’ or contains only ‘natural preservatives’.

Remember, the highest quality of nourishment comes from whole natural and enzyme-active foods that are not refined nor processed or laden with preservatives. The challenge is to understand your pet food labels and ingredients so you can best decide what is truly natural, free of preservatives and nutritious for your beloved companion animal.

Here is a list of vegetables and legumes that are great value for money, effective and nutritious for both human and animal: carrots, spinach, beetroot, celery, brown rice, millet, pearl barley, split peas and wheat germ.

Whether you are cooking for the family, two legged or four, make sure you include vegetables and legumes in their diet.

Celebrating

Mandela Day with Wellness #67Tips

Mandela Day is about making a change in the world for the better. No matter how small. Wellness Warehouse celebrated Mandela Day this year by sharing 67 health tips with South Africa – one tip for each of the years that Nelson Mandela spent making the world a better place.

Wellness Warehouse believes that wellness is every South African’s right and that it’s every South African’s right to take charge of their own health. Wellness Warehouse’s Mandela Day initiative is inspired by Mr Mandela’s famous quote: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’

We hope you’re as inspired by these #67Tips as we have been creating and sharing them.

#60“Drink buchu water if you’re feeling bloated. Buchu is a natural diuretic.”

#50“Forgive easily. Holding onto anger can make you ill.”

helping you live life well

During the winter months we have a tendency to layer up, cover up and settle in. Your make-up and beauty routine is one aspect of your life that need not hibernate. Read on for 15 beauty tips to inspire your grooming routine.

BeautyBy Sam Aronson

Coconut oil for deep moisture

Coconut oil is a ‘must-have’ for any beauty buff. Use it as a hair conditioner, skin moisturiser and shaving balm. What most people don’t know is it’s an excellent make-up remover, lifting mascara effortlessly in one smooth gliding motion.

Breakfast facemask anyone?

It’s not only the most important meal of the day but breakfast ingredients offer important nutrients for your face as well. Combine honey, plain yoghurt and whipped egg whites and you have a facemask that leaves your skin glowing and restored. Honey holds many healing properties and helps diminish unwanted blemishes.

Winter tan

There’s no need to look as pale and dull as the grey sky above you. Simply add two drops of self-tan to your daily moisturiser and get a sun kissed lasting hint of colour.

Baking soda for a whiter smile

Expensive teeth whiteners are unnecessary when you can use a safe method with a simple ingredient. Brushing your teeth with baking soda is an effective way to whiten and brighten your teeth without the cost or effort.

Coffee solution for cellulite

Use freshly ground coffee and combine with three tablespoons of hot water and two tablespoons of olive oil to create a paste. Massage your caffeine-spiked scrub in a circular motion to affected areas. The caffeine and antioxidants in coffee reduce the appearance of cellulite and help tone and tighten skin tissue.

Green tea to calm eyes

Green tea is loaded with antioxidants. Use green tea bags to soothe puffy and irritated eyes by steeping in warm water and placing them on top of the eyelids. The caffeine in the tea will shrink swelling and reduce fluid around the eyes.

Eye drops for tired mascara

Refresh dry mascara and smooth out the lumps by adding 4-5 eye drops into your mascara tube. Mix it in by moving your mascara wand around and your old mascara will be good to go.

Sweet sugar skin

Exfoliation is key to tightening skin pores and improving circulation. Combine brown sugar and olive oil for an all round body scrub. Olive oil protects skin from damage and sugar removes dead cells left on the skins surface.

Never underestimate a lemon

Lemons are a great cure for dry, flaky or scabbed skin. Cut half a lemon and rub on dry areas. It’s most effective on elbows, knees and heels.

Longer lasting nail polish

Keep your nail polish in the fridge. It slows down discolouration, prevents spoilage and makes it easier to apply.

Brush up on hygiene

Make up brushes are prone to bacteria build up and germs, this is why it’s so important they are cleaned regularly. Soak brushes for ten minutes in chemical free baby shampoo and water, the baby shampoo provides a gentle clean without damaging the bristles.

Stimulate hair growth

Combine Argan and Jojoba oil and massage into hair and scalp. Allow the oil to work on the hair for thirty minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Not only is this treatment relaxing but it also works wonders for hair growth and shine.

Make longer lashes

Rinse out an old mascara container, refill with ¼ castor oil, ¼ aloe Vera and ½ vitamin E oil. Apply to lashes every night as you would your mascara. The castor oil thickens the lashes while the Aloe Vera and Vitamin E oil accelerate length.

Restore razor blades

Soak razor blades in baby oil after use, this stops the metal from oxidising and keeps blades sharper for longer.

Bring on natural highlights

For natural highlights that won’t dry out your hair soak chamomile tea bags in water for ten minutes. Spray the tea onto the hair and leave for thirty minutes. Natural chemicals from the blooms enhance blonde undertones and add a gold effect to the hair.

did you know?Using natural products like coconut oil or honey not only nourishes your body from the inside; they are also wonderful additions to your beauty regime. Reap the beautiful benefits without costing you, or the Earth.

Scents, sensibility & skin

helping you live life well

lookwellbeauty & wellspa

You will be drawn to the kinds of smells that are naturally healing for you. If you find the smell of cinnamon especially irresistible, you could be a ‘cinnamon personality’. Cinnamon personalities tend to more physical and emotional than mental.

Spend a few minutes in store smelling different essential oils and you’ll soon see which you like and which you don’t.

"

Page 65: Perfect Healing

Despite craving cinamonny baked goods, body image is very

important to cinnamons. When a cinnamon personality is out of balance they become preoccupied with image and tend to be overly emotional. Interestingly, out of balance cinnamons also share similar skin problems, especially bouts of acne possibly caused by emotional overeating. Notice the cycle?

What’s my ‘aroma-personality’?This is easy to figure out. Spend a few minutes in a store smelling different essential oils and you’ll soon see which you like and which you don’t. It’s certain that the oils you’re drawn to will be good for you. You can double check this with the table below.

If you like the smell of lemongrass essential oil and tend to have oily skin or enlarged pores, that’s one box ticked. If you also feel in need of a little inspiration in your life, that’s another box ticked. Are you also warm and friendly, and prone to being a dreamer? Lemongrass may be for you. Get a whiff of these essential oil must-haves for starters:

LEMONGRASS

Personality: Warm, friendly, may be a bit of a dreamer

Mood: Refreshing, inspiring

Skin Type: Oily/acne, large pores

ROSEWOOD

Personality: Gentle, nurturing, supportive

Mood: Calms, relieves tension

Skin Type: Wrinkles, blemishes, sensitive skin

GERANIUM OIL

Personality: Interesting, generous, kind

Mood: Balances mood and emotions

Skin Type: Eczema, dermatitis, sensitive skin

YLANG YLANG

Personality: Intense and passionate yet calm and balanced

Mood: Uplifting, eases depression

Skin Type: Balances combination skin

Choose carefullyA large choice of aromatherapy brands and types can be a little intimidating. When it comes to choosing an aromatherapy oil, look for purity and pick an organic product wherever possible. If the bottle says the oil is a blend, or anything other than ‘100% pure essential oil’, it may not be the quality you’re looking for.

Seeing the Latin name of the plant on the bottle is always a good sign – that way you can look it up and identify exactly what it is you’re buying. One more trick is to see if a country of origin is named. You may not know which countries produce better quality essential oils, but if a manufacturer includes this information it means it’s more likely they’re supported by professionals who do.

It’s all in the blendOnce you’ve found the essential oil you think is ‘the one’, you’ll need to find the best way to use it. You could inhale it using a burner, bathe in it, or apply it (diluted) to your skin. If you’re looking to improve the condition of your skin, massaging it in is the way to go. The trick is to use very little.

Choose a carrier oil (an oil that will ‘carry’ or hold the essential oil) that’s good for your skin type. Coconut oil, which you can also eat, is good for all skin types. Avocado oil is the right choice for ageing or very dehydrated skin – and you can drizzle it on salads, too. Go for jojoba oil if your skin is somewhere in the middle. Then, when it comes to diluting your essential oils in the carrier oil you’ve chosen, easy does it. Follow the directions on the bottle to the letter.

As a general rule, make sure that there’s no more than 0.5% aromatherapy oil in a carrier blend you’re going to use often. That’s a very, very, small amount. At times you may need no more than a single drop.

What is phototoxicity?A really long word that means an essential oil (or anything else you put on your skin) can cause damage when you go out in the sun. To be 100% safe, avoid using citrus oils like bergamot, lemon, lime, orange and angelica in the day or on skin that will be exposed to the sun. Always use sunscreen either way.

The aromatherapist’s apothecaryIf you’re at all concerned, consider checking your oil of choice against this aromatherapists’ ‘safe list’. These essential oils are all considered among the safest when used as directed.

Take careStill, if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication, under 12, or have any sort of serious health problems, ask a trained aromatherapist before you use any aromatherapy oil. Essential oil is powerful stuff and can affect your mind and body profoundly.

65www.wellnesswarehouse.com

lookwellbeauty & wellspa

did you know?Essential oils may be natural, but that doesn’t mean they’re not powerful. Stay safe in general by doing research on any essential oil you use, by always diluting essential oils, and following any warnings on the bottle. Ask an aromatherapist for advice if in doubt.

Paleo skin?helping you live life well

lookwellbeauty & wellspa

Paleo or not, many of us spend a lot of time focusing on eating well. We may avoid sugar, grains, alcohol, carbs, artificial flavourants and colourants, or all of the above, because we care for our bodies and want to nourish them with only the best foods. Can we say the same about what we put on our skin, though?

Page 69: Perfect Healing

If you’re not into paleo skincare, maybe not. But why exclude things

like wheat, dairy, irritants, toxins and chemicals from your diet, only to allow them into your body in the beauty products you use? Ideally, if it’s not good enough to eat, you shouldn’t be putting it on your skin.

Paleo shmaleoThere are so many meal plans out there right now vying for top position in the health lifestyle stakes that you’d be forgiven for not remembering exactly what ‘paleo’ means. Don’t worry. All you need to know is that, when it comes to skincare, ‘paleo’ means going as natural as you possibly can. If you’re already a natural skincare fundi, you’re probably following a paleo skincare plan without even realising it.

Your first line of defenceCulturally, skin defines much of our standard for beauty. Bright, youthful skin signals health and vitality. And, like every part of our bodies, skin responds to care and attention. Proper treatment can revitalise skin and slow the aging process, keeping skin healthier, longer,’ says HuffPost blogger Deborah Burnes, author of Look Great, Live Green.

Your skin is your body’s biggest organ and biologically is your body’s first line of defence. From offering a protective barrier against the world, to removing waste, to protecting us from injury and producing vitamin D, our skin is vital to our survival not only physically, but emotionally, too.

‘The next time you soak in a bathtub with chemical based products or slather on a chemical-laden lotion, think about that. Your skin has a great ability to absorb what you put on it,’ says Burnes.

Common senseWhen it comes to paleo skincare, there’s one simple rule: if it’s good enough to eat, it’s good enough to put on your skin. In an ideal world we’d moisturise with water – from the inside – exfoliate with the mild acids in yoghurt and moisturise with olive oil. Sticking to a completely natural, homemade, skincare routine can be time consuming and isn’t always convenient, though. (Have you ever had a clogged drain because of the coffee grounds you’ve been using to exfoliate? I have!)

You want the products you buy to be good enough to eat. But it’s not realistic, and not really recommended, to walk the aisles of your supermarket tasting moisturiser. The next best thing to raiding your pantry when you need to cleanse is choosing skincare brands made with pure, simple, ingredients. Choose organic wherever possible, and go for shorter ingredients lists. Less is more here.

GO YOUR OWN WAYIf you’d prefer to use homemade products, here are three easy ideas:

For dry, sensitive skin

In winter skin can easily be dried out by heating. This spritz cools, soothes, protects with antioxidants and moisturisers.

Make a cup of green tea and brew for 5 minutes. Take out the tea bag, pop in a spritzer, and refrigerate. Spritz on dry, sensitive, skin as needed.

To exfoliate

Dry, flaky skin can improve after exfoliation. This oat-ey yoghurt scrub takes a minute to make. The oats exfoliate manually while the lactic acid is a natural gentle exfoliator.

Mix half a cup of yoghurt together with a quarter cup of oats. Apply to your face, neck, and décolleté. Allow to dry and wash off – in the shower. (Warning: this one is messy!)

To gently cleanse

Oil cleansing is a timelessly popular way to remove dirt and makeup. It’s very simple and works for all skin types.

Soak a face cloth in hot water. Warm some oil (jojoba, olive, almond, or any other of your choice) in your hands before gently massaging it into your face. Then hold the warm face cloth against your face for a few minutes before using it to remove the oil with a little extra water, if necessary.

Natural beautyA few things you didn’t know about...

You don’t need harsh chemicals—or loads of time—to get shiny, healthy hair and glowing skin. Just go back to basics. Use these six tips to inspire you.

The best way to hydrate your skin and scalp is from within. Make sure you drink enough water. A general rule: if you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

Coconut oil isn’t just for eating. It’s an amazing moisturiser for face, body, and hair. Leave it on your hair overnight after washing and drying, or use as you would regular moisturiser.

Studies suggest that rooibos has very effective anti-cancer properties.

Look out for rooibos in your shampoo and moisturiser.

The simpler a beauty product, the better. When you read ingredients

lists on products, don’t only look out for chemicals to avoid, find products with few ingredients.

Treat dry skin and hair from the inside. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to help dry skin and brittle hair.

Your skin’s optimal pH level is 5.5. Healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic. Using harsh ingredients on your skin can interfere with its pH level, making it harder for your skin to fight environmental stresses.
