Auburn presents award-winning PetpaloozaABOUT THE DOG TROT

The Auburn Parks, Arts and Recreation Department continues to accept registrations for the Dog Trot Fun Run at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Auburn’s Game Farm Park, 3030 R St. SE.

Advanced registration is $23 per person; on-site registration is $25 per person. T-shirts are included while supplies last.

Dog Trot is a family-oriented fun run/walk event that takes place in conjunction with Pet-palooza.

Participants may choose between the 3K or the 5K routes. The course is flat, easy and enjoyable for all ages and ability levels. Strollers are welcome on the course; participants may walk/run with up to two dogs. Visit the City’s website, www.auburnwa.gov/petpalooza, for a complete list of rules.

The City of Auburn has contracted with BuDu Racing, which handles the day-of, “chip” timing.

Awards will be distributed to the top participant in six age groups: child (8 and under); tween (9-12 years); teen (13-19);

adult I (20-35); adult II (36-54) and senior (55 and older. In order to be eligible for an award, participants must compete with a dog.

Participants may register at the Parks, Arts & Recreation Of-fice, 910 Ninth St. SE.

The registration form and complete event rules/infor-

mation are listed on the city’s website.

ABOUT PETPALOOZAIt’s an event for pet lovers and

a special day for your four-legged family member or other furry friend. Auburn’s interna-tionally award-winning Pet-

palooza festival is at Game Farm Park on May 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It kicks off with the Dog Trot 3K/5K Fun Run.

The free event features live entertainment including, among others, The Parrot Lady and Northwest Animal Adventures. Petpalooza includes pony rides, camel rides, the “Unleashed” Pet Contest, an agility area, dem-onstrations and more than 150 vendors.

Vendors will include nonprofit organizations and rescues, such as the Auburn Valley Humane Society, Wolf Haven Interna-tional and Smidget Rescue.

You’ll also see a variety of local and regional handcrafted artwork, featuring an assortment of animal-related items.

Also to be seen are service vendors, such as veterinarians, groomers and trainers, such as Family Dog Training Center and All Dogs Training Services.

Attendees will see a variety of commercial vendors such as Pet Pros, Protec Pet Health and Sojos Pet Foods.

Offered throughout the event is a local competition of the 2015 Hyperflite Skyhoundz Disc Dog Championships. Hyperflite’s

sponsorship of the Skyhoundz Canine Disc World Champion-ship series is the largest disc-dog series in the world. There is no entry fee for competitors, and admission is free for all specta-tors (www.hyperflite.com/com-petition.html).

Back again is the widely popu-lar 20-by-40-foot petting zoo, a Kids’ AG-Ventureland Activity Area, GASCAR Crazy Animal Racing and Farmyard Follies Shows, all contracted through the Great American Animal Entertainment Co..

The petting zoo is a different kind of petting zoo. There are no barriers inside the enclosure, and all the animals run freely with the public. The zoo includes a wide variety of animals, such as wallabies, llamas and exotic goats.

The AG-Ventureland includes goat and cow milking, corn and bean play boxes, pony saddling and more.

The exciting GASCAR races is inter-species animal racing like you’ve never seen before. Goats, sheep, chickens, pigs and other surprise animals wear racing silks as they hoof and waddle

BY KATHY LANG

Family Dog Training Center

Thinking of taking Fido along as you visit a com-munity fair or festival? First consider your dog’s temperament.

Not all dogs are com-fortable in crowds. Those with fears or aggressive tendencies should be left at home. Work with a trainer to desensitize these canines until they are comfortable in chaotic environments.

Even the most reliable dogs need careful manage-ment.

Here’s your checklist for success:

Outfit your dog with a sturdy, non-retractable leash attached to a well-fitting collar or harness

with current ID, license and rabies tags. Bring your own water, a collapsible water bowl, plenty of treats and poop bags. Plan your dog’s potty breaks and take him away from the action to do his business.

Keep your dog close and under control at all times. Dogs that are al-lowed to pull or lead their owners through crowds are at greater risk of getting stepped on or bumped into by a stroller. Some adults and children are afraid of dogs; they will be more com-fortable if your dog is under control.

As you talk to vendors, stroll through booths, or stop to watch the entertainment, keep your dog at your side. Have him sit so he doesn’t jump up. Reward him with treats. When folks admire your well-mannered pet, have Fido sit for greeting. Take a moment to teach children the proper way to greet a dog: wait for the dog to sit; extend a hand for sniffing, and if the dog is friendly, lightly stroke its shoulder or side. Never pet a strange dog on top of the head, and always be calm.

Be your dog’s advocate. If you aren’t comfortable with certain people, nicely decline their request to in-teract with your dog. Never allow your dog to visit or sniff noses with another dog in this type of environ-ment. You don’t know if the other dog is healthy or has good dog skills; the last thing you want is a dog fight, or a sick dog.

Pay attention to the weather and ground tem-perature. The heat of the sun can make pavements too hot for dog paws. If it’s warm, give your dog frequent water breaks in the shade.

Ways to help your dog become pawsitively social
