Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement

We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service.

Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action.

As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming.

Weekly Reflection

Rekindling the fire within Today’s readings and prayers signal the beginning of the Church. The reading from Acts documents that on Pentecost the disciples “were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” Their proclamation of God’s word spread throughout the known world. Our commemoration of this great event calls us to cry out in the responsorial psalm, “Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.” We pray for renewal, for rebirth. We are called to be reborn in the Spirit -- to shake off any complacency and stagnation. We have received the gifts of the Holy Spirit at different times throughout our lives, initially at our Baptism and most dramatically at our Confirmation. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are found within us. Paul reminds us that when we strive to use the Spirit’s gifts, “the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control” are born and our world is renewed. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul writes that “there are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” It is our individual prayer that we be aware of our individual gifts and culti-vate them to bear fruit. This is God’s call to all regard-less of age. So we pray on this day of rebirth, this day of Pentecostal fire, to rec-ognize God’s gifts so “that the divine grace that was at work when the gospel was first proclaimed, will fill now once more the hearts of believ-ers” (Collect).

Did You Know?

Preventing Child Abuse is Everyone’s Responsibility

It is every adult’s moral responsibility to

protect possible victims by reporting suspected abuse or neglect to the responsible authorities. Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive, societal problem, and only rigorous and sustained efforts by all adults in every segment of society can help to protect children and youth. The State of California’s Office of Child Abuse Prevention website contains helpful information about how to report abusive behavior and provides contact information of local author-ities: http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/PG2289.htm. For par-ticular help you may call the Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Ministerio Hispano

In the Community Ministerio Hispano ¿Sabía Usted?
