Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement

We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service.

Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action.

As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming.

Weekly Reflection

The Triumph of the Cross

Today’s readings and prayers mark the conclusion of the Church’s liturgical calendar. We have celebrated the scripture narrative beginning with the awaiting for the Messiah and concluding with Jesus’ majestic return at the end of time. The second reading from Revela-tions records God’s summary of today’s celebration, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.” God is indeed King over all –transcending our human understanding of time and space. He has sent his beloved Son, who has come to redeem all from evil and death. Daniel re-minds us in the first reading that Christ’s “dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.” This is the very truth that Pilate is blind to in his exchange with Jesus in the gospel. Pilate is so engrossed in the political in-trigue of the day that he is deaf to Jesus’ explanation that “my kingdom does not belong to this world.” This conversation provokes our attention. How many times have we lost our reference to Christ’s kingship and be-come absorbed in the human interactions of power and influence. When we stop and consider power and those who have wielded authority, we realize none have en-dured or will endure. Human faults and limitations corrupt eve-ry attempt man has made to rule. Jesus alone can reconcile all things. The Preface reminds us that Jesus’ “offering himself on the altar of the Cross as a spot-less sacrifice” brings to his Father “an eternal and universal king-dom of justice, love, and peace.” This is the culminating celebration of our faith.

Roof Project Update

The planned start date for tearing off the roof has been moved to Friday, Nov. 27th. The City will not allow us to work at night so the work will be completed while school is out on vacation. The tear-off crew is anticipating 2 full days to complete the tear off – Friday and Saturday. The church will be closed during this process and will require us to move the 8:00 a.m. mass on Friday, and the 8:00 a.m. mass and 8:30 a.m. confessions on Saturday to Mul-cahy Center. Please note that we will not have a 6:30 a.m. mass on Friday. Thank you for your patience during this process and thank you to those who have already contributed. If you’d like to make a donation, envelopes are in the vestibule and a giving option is available online with recurring payments available . Please contact me if you’d like to make a pledge or discuss other giving oppor-tunities. Lauren Burns 805-642-7966 ext. 101 or [email protected].

“Spotlight” is a major motion picture opening in select markets on November 6 that tells the story of how the Boston Globe newspaper’s Spotlight Investiga-tive Unit uncovered the child sex abuse scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston in

2002. It will go into limited release on November 6 and national release on November 20. Vatican Radio has described the film as “honest” and “compelling,” saying that the Globe’s coverage of the scandal – for which it won a Pulitzer Prize – helped the Church in the United States “to accept fully the sin, to ad-mit it publicly and to pay the consequences.” It is possi-ble the film may open up old wounds, and we need to ex-press our care to the victim/survivors. If anyone ap-proaches you and says they were abused by clergy or anyone else, encourage them to report to the proper au-thorities and invite them to seek pastoral care through Suzanne Healy, Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, at (213) 637-7650. If anything, the film reminds us that the sex abuse scan-dal isn’t something to “put behind us,” but instead is something we need to keep in front of us at all times so we can stay vigilant and make sure it never happens again, and that we never deviate from our commitment to creating a safe environment for our children and young people. Please remember this is an opportunity to share the ongoing commitment and efforts by the Church and the many individuals who have worked tirelessly in the safe environment programs to protect children, heal those harmed by abuse and continue to educate our communi-ties on the importance of abuse prevention.

Reflections from Ventura Catholic Faith Community’s Faith in Action

Our community of faith is blessed with many gifts. Two of the most vital are our remarkable commitment to Catholic education and catechesis in all its forms and our rich tra-dition of Catholic social teaching. “ there is an urgent need to bring these two gifts together in a strengthened commitment to sharing our social teaching at every level of Catholic education and faith formation. Catholic social teaching is based on and inseparable from our understanding of human life and human dignity. Every human being is created in the image of God and redeemed by Jesus Christ, and therefore is invaluable and worthy of respect as a member of the human family. Every person, from the moment of conception to natural death, has inherent dignity and a right to life consistent with that dignity. Human dignity comes from God, not from any human quality or accomplishment. The above is a modified excerpt from Reflections of the U.S. Catholic Bishops “Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions”.

Assisted Suicide

Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Ses-sion, the CA legislature passed assisted sui-cide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally ill patients. Join a coali-tion of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organizations, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! On November 22, Christ the King Sunday, petitions will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote and can only sign once. Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? · Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide

for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society.

· Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide.

· Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Sui-cides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people in-creased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.
