Google Classroom. Note: My class sessions are 2 hours and 15 minutes every school day. We feature hands-on training, so my classroom-lecture time is limited to 30 minutes.

Description of Activity:

Content included several videos about manufacturing and jobs in manufacturing. Students were encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions about various working environments in machine shops, factories, and assembly lines. We did internet searches for current job opportunities at several local and regional companies including Acero Precision (precision machining, West Chester), DePuy Synthes (medical device manufacturing, West Chester), Southco (manufacturer of latches and access hardware, Concordville), CNH (agriculture and industrial machinery, New Holland), and AllFill (packaging machinery, Exton).

Student assignments:1. Watch the video “Experience Lycoming: History Making Engines.” Answer questions about Lycoming Engines on accompanying worksheet.2. Watch the video “How Lycoming Builds Aircraft Engines.” Answer questions about Lycoming Engines on accompanying worksheet.3. Interview a parent or guardian about experience in a manufacturing job. Write a brief essay about their experiences, thoughts, and opinions regarding manufacturing in USA.

What elements from your Manufacturing Externship were used in the preparation or delivery of the unit? (i.e. robot, PPTs provided, information gathered from discussions or tours, etc.)

1. The most important element from the Manufacturing Externship was inspiration. In the past I encouraged students to look at how our tasks are used in various industries, but now I am encouraging them to look at jobs in manufacturing.

2. I like Lycoming Engines, and the virtual tour of their facility was a great place to start talking about jobs in manufacturing.

3. Discussions at the externship about CNC process were particularly helpful.

How were students engaged with the unit? What hands-on activities occurred?

The Manufacturing Externship program at Penn College was supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1902379.

1. Students seemed to be fascinated by the amount of detail and quality that goes into Lycoming Engines.

2. The assignment where students asked a relative about manufacturing experiences was especially interesting. Most parents were encouraging; they either worked in manufacturing in the past or hold current positions in manufacturing. Only one parent expressed concern that her daughter was interested in manufacturing.

3. Our lab is centered around hands-on experiences. 80% of our time is dedicated to self-paced, student-centered education.

Explain connections that were created/discussed between manufacturing careers and higher education.

We discussed the importance of education in manufacturing. As a part of our program, we always talk about the amount of education necessary for specific jobs. Part of the lesson was to look up jobs on O*Net to see how much education is necessary for technicians and engineers. We also talk about specific school that offer associate and bachelor degrees in technology and engineering. Specific to this lesson, we discussed training for CNC operators and Manufacturing Engineers.

How did students respond to the unit? The response seemed to be very positive. The program I teach is Robotics and Mechatronics, so most of my students are in tune with technology relating to automation and electromechanical principles.

Were parents involved or aware of the unit? What was their response to the activities?

For the research/essay assignment most students interviewed a parent, and two interviewed other relatives. I was pleased with the results, and I am certain that 90% of parents were engaged and made aware of our emphasis on manufacturing.

A goal of this program is to make advanced manufacturing education and information available to high school students. As such, Penn College is attempting to build a repository of activities that can be used across the K-12 environment. In the subsequent pages, please provide additional information on the lesson/units you implemented so that others can implement similar activities in their classrooms. Please be sure to include any material lists, photos/evidence of student work (not of student participants), and any other relevant information required to implement in another school.
