Penguins Everywhere.
%^#*
I started off the project with some simple penguin doodles and then
four word charts. The first list was fifty words to physically describe
a penguin. The second list was a bit more challenging, fifty words to
describe the emotional attributes of the flightless bird. I mainly used
how the animals interact with eachother to create this list. The next two
were more fun, a list of words to describe the sounds penguins make
and what associations people make with them. The associations mainly
connected to the media portrayal of penguins and the stereotypes that
go with them. With each category I tried to make a few penguin ideas
to match the words listed.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
The next step was to brainstorm and connect all the words I listed before.
I seperated the words into five main categories, media portrayal, physical
appearence, environment, family interactions, and daily interactions.

After drawing the hundreds of penguins in
the first step, now it was time to minimize and
refine. From each section I took my favorite
three and cleaned them up. From there I went
through another round of critiques and cut
down to one from each cetegory.

Starting Logos.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
After all the initial penguins have been refined
and chosen, it was time to use what I learned to
start making logos. The logos were for a food
truck I have to do all the branding for. I had three
ideas for what kind of food truck I wanted to
create; first, the fancy cuisine theme. This logo
would play off the tuxedo-penguin connection
people make. The second idea was an artic
themed fish food truck. This logo would have
the penguin in its natural environment. The third
logo idea I had at this point was a island, tropi-
cal theme to play off the idea of penguins living
in the Galapogos Islands. Although this was a
bit more abstract than the first two I really liked
where this logo idea was heading.

IDEA 1
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
My first idea was an upscale fish food truck. The concept was
a two story food truck with a normal take-out style ground
floor and on the second floor there would be a small sit down
area for people to dine. This area would be very exclusive and
reservation only. I wanted to do something with a penguin in
a tuxedo for this brand exploration and I really wanted to
work out wine bottles specifically. The color scheme with this
food truck would be a simple black and white with a splash
of yellow thrown in around, much like the colors of a penguin.
IDEA 2
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
My second idea was more based on the environment of the
penguin and less on its appearence. Flipper was originally
going to be either an ice cream or fish themed food truck.
With this I really wanted to work with a penguin playing in
the snow doing various activities people associate with snow,
such as skiing. The color scheme with this food truck would
be a very cool, artic theme with a lot of hues of blue and
white. I really liked the idea of a fish pattern for around the
food truck but I struggled making a connection between fish
and ice cream.

IDEA 3
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
My third idea was a bit more abstract than the other two; I
wanted to go with an island theme. This would coorospond
with the fact that the most north penguins live is in the
Galapagos Islands. With this knowledge I wanted to create
an island, tropical theme and cover the truck with a beach
scene. Since my strongest aspect of this project is drawing
I thought creating this would really give my truck something
special with all the fun penguins. I also really liked this idea
because not many people have tropical food trucks.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
And then I scrapped everything and started over.
