Avon, Heathcote whitebait warningBY SHELLEY ROBINSON

Eat whitebait from the Avon and Heathcote Rivers at your own peril – it is like eating “sewage.”

Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said consum-ing whitebait caught from the city’s polluted waterways was ill-advised.

The whitebaiting season starts this Saturday and runs until No-vember 30.

Dr Humphrey said whitebait in the city’s rivers is “brown bait” with the potential to cause crippling stomach bugs, like giardia cysts and cryptosporidium.

“People catch it, put it in a bucket and freeze it. So it is frozen in its own sewage. Cooking doesn’t make a difference,” he said.

He said thawing whitebait blocks was likely to contaminate kitch-ens.

The news comes after the release

of a city council report revealed the worst waterways, strangled by con-taminants from rebuild, cracked sewers and faeces from dogs and waterfowl.

It is the first comprehensive report since the earthquakes, with 44 sites tested monthly last year.

Among the worst sites, were those in the east of the city.

Linwood Canal, which runs along Linwood Ave was tied for the

worst site with Haytons Stream at Retention Basin.

The Avon River at Bridge St, South New Brighton was tied for second worst along with 13 other sites.

All but 11 sites failed to meet regional council guidelines for Escherichia-coli with levels particularly high at the Horseshoe Lake discharge site and Dudley Creek.

A safe which was stolen from O’Sheas Public House in May has been found in a backyard.

About $1500 was in the safe when it was taken by two men who used a crowbar to break into the back door of the bar.

It was found by police at a Shirley house, close to O’Sheas.

The cash which was in it was gone and the safe was badly damaged.

One person was arrested at the address after police ob-

tained a search warrant.Bar owner Alan Stroud said

the man arrested was not one of the two which broke into the bar.

Cheques from the safe were found at the address along with the safe itself.

Mr Stroud said police found more cheques at a Beckenham address which lead police to the Shirley property where the safe was found.

The money belonged to O’Sheas social committee which had stored it in the safe

behind the bar.Mr Stroud put up a $100

bar tab for any information leading to the return of the safe.

The bar tab was never claimed.

Mr Stroud said the men who stole the safe would have known there was money in it, and suspected they had been at the bar previously and saw money going into it.

The intruders did not trip the alarm until they were leaving with the safe in hand.

The Gayhurst Rd bridge is finally opening on Friday.

The bridge was scheduled to be finished in mid-June but work to resurface the roads either side of the bridge have meant the bridge opening was delayed.

A community gathering is planned for Friday morning, starting at 10am. The public is welcome.

The bridge will be open to vehicles at noon.

Christchurch Central MP Nicky Wagner and Christ-church East candidate Jo Hayes will be there to cut the ribbon.

Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team executive general manager, Ian

Campbell and Burwood-Pega-sus ward city councillor, Glenn Livingstone will speak at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The celebration will in-clude members of the local community and children from the nearby pre-school.

Funding for the upgrades to the approaches on Gay-hurst Rd and Gloucester St

were signed off by the city council in early June and were expected to take two weeks once started.

They have now been completed which has allowed SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team to open the bridge.

It is the first fully rebuilt bridge to be completed in the city.

Bridge opening on Friday

READY: The Gayhurst Rd bridge has been finished and will open to traffic on Friday.

•From page 1Dr Humphrey said the main

source of faecal pollutants, outside of human waste from sewer over-flows, were dog and duck faeces.

Feeding mallard ducks on lawns and near river-ways, and failing to pick up after their dogs, meant faeces were swept into waterways.

“The Avon is a special river for whitebait because it is an incubator for the rest of Can-terbury river,” he said.

Eating fish from rivers, that do not have contaminated warning signs, was safe, he said.

“The difference is you wash them, gut them, fillet them, and cook them,” he said

Fish and Game environmental adviser Scott Pearson said eating one or two fish from the rivers was okay, but regularly eating fish from waterways may be less safe.

A recommendation on what to do with the asbestos-laden material sitting at the QE II site is expected to be made next month.

A report is due to be delivered to the Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board outlining options to safely, securely and permanently manage the asbestos.

City council recreation and sports unit manager, John Filsell, said this means a solution that will ensure the asbestos will not harm anyone.

“This can range from securely encapsulating the asbestos on site to removing it elsewhere. In both of these examples the way we go about undertaking them has to be in a manner that will not do anyone any harm.”

Parklands Residents Association committee member Paddy Bran-don said although it has taken a long time to get to this stage it was a positive it was finally happening.

“I’m quite relaxed about that, the key objective is to get it out of there and fit for public use.

“I think the positive thing is that the issue has been taken seriously. You have to give them (city council) credit they’re coming up with some options to get rid of it.”

“My wish would be to see the end of it by the end of September.”

The community board will make a recommendation to the city council on what option to take.

Mr Brandon said either option, removing it from the site of bury-ing it, was not an issue.

He said the residents associa-tion had been given expert advice regarding it being buried on site with no issues to worry about.

Community board member Linda Stewart (inset) said she would consider both options but

would need to be reassured there would be no leaching of material into groundwater.

“My concern now is about the environment because the waterways are very close and I don’t want it getting into Travis Wetland.”

She said a decision on what to do with the rubble which has sat

on the site since QE II’s demoli-tion in 2012 was overdue, but with two schools and a recreation centre planned for the site, it was understandable why it has taken so long.

Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ high schools plan to relocate to the site in 2018 as well as a city council-built recreation centre.

ACTION: The asbestos demolition material sitting at QE II could be moved or buried.

A new mega school and what

Aranui is about to become home to one of the most impressive schools in the country.

Four schools are closing and merging to form one super school – the Aranui Community Campus.

Aranui Primary, Avondale Pri-mary and Wainoni schools are all set to close next year with the new co-educational school catering for years 1-13 opening on the Aranui High School site, in Short-land St.

It will be the first of its kind in Christchurch with groundworks already under way.

There will be about 900 stu-dents merging into the one school in 2017 but has capacity to grow to a roll of 1800.

Latest statistics show Wainoni had a roll of 89 last year, Avondale 303, Aranui 157 and Aranui High 370.

Five new buildings totalling just over 5000m² of teaching space will make up the school and are being built where the current

playing fields are. When they have been com-

pleted, the old buildings will be demolished and new playing fields will be laid in place of them.

Ministry of Education spokes-woman Katrina Casey said the new school will have a range of new facilities.

“The school will benefit from specialist teaching spaces for science, trades, production and process, food technology and performing arts.”

There will be a gym, a 700-seat multi-purpose cultural space, library, student services and student health area as well as ad-ministration and staff facilities.”

The Aranui Community Campus is just a temporary name until a new one is found with a feedback period closing yesterday on a shortlist of names.

Those names are Haeata, Awa, Taikura and the Eastern Community Campus.

The new school will be built us-ing a private-public partnership.

What this means is that a private partner is responsible for designing, building, financing and maintaining the school property for the term of the contract (usu-ally 25 years from the opening of the school).

The $298 million contract has been given to Future Schools Partners to build and maintain four schools across New Zealand including the Aranui Community Campus.

The private partner will work with the ministry as well as the establishment board of trustees to

ensure the vision for the school is maintained.

The ministry pays the private partner once ev-ery three months, with this payment reduced if the school facilities do not meet the standards specified in the contract.

This effectively provides a 25-year guarantee on the buildings, unlike schools operating under traditional procurement models.

The Government retains own-

ership of the land and buildings throughout the life of the con-tract.

It is expected that this approach would fundamentally change how education is delivered in this community.

Aranui Community Trust Incorporated Society chairman Rob Davidson (left) said when the decision was made to close the four existing schools, it was met with a bit of dissatisfaction, but as the plans have grown the community has embraced the concept.

OPPORTUNITY: Sports teams like the Aranui High rugby league side will benefit from the new facilities including a gym at the new campus.

Construction of Aranui Community Campus starts next month and is expected to be finished for the start of the 2017 school year. Reporter Kyle Knowles takes a look at the school and what it will offer

“The community is quite excited and supportive of it now and it’s a great opportunity to create a first rate educational institute.”

Mr Davidson said through the principal appointee process they had someone apply from the North Island who was the principal of a year 1-13 school.

“She said there was a really positive environment at the school which reassured me hearing someone who had worked in that environment was positive about it.”

The ministry has been working with the city council and other relevant parties to identify facilities for the campus, such as

a swimming pool, library and specialist youth facilities.

One facility that is not on the master plan for the school, but is a priority, is a whare.

The establishment board has said it is fully committed to having a whare on the school site.

The whare on the current Aranui High School site cannot be moved due to asbestos issues.

A new whare will be a project led from outside the private partnership and may not be ready in time for the opening of the rest of the school in 2017.

Aranui resident and Burwood-Pegasus Community Board member, Tim Baker, said the road to the new school has been rocky but the end result will benefit the whole community.

“We have concerns about playgrounds and how many there will be as well as how the different

cultural aspects are going to incorporated into the school.

“The community had no input into the design of the school and I have an issue with the PPP personally.”

He said, however, when the school is finished it will be a great facility.

“The idea of the open plan and the modern learning environment is exciting.”

Mr Baker was also pleased with the year 1-13 model.

“I think that’s a great idea, more interactive activities between older and younger students, it makes sense.”

A satellite of Ferndale Special School will be co-located on the site and will provide special education for secondary age students.

Next week we profile the establishment board of trustees.

FLASH: An artist’s impression of what the new school will look like.

Haeata: It means dawn/day-light and new beginnings. The new campus faces the east and the rising sun, and the name signifies new beginnings for the east of Christchurch, and light shining on the school, our students and the community. The name se-lected for the school could be, for example, Haeata Campus, Haeata Community Campus, Haeata Kura or Haeata School.

Taikura: It means a coastal school or “tides of learning” (tai means tide or coast, and kura means school, learning, gathering and precious). The name signifies a collective (gathering/campus) of learning. The name selected for the school could be, for example, Taikura, Te Taikura, Taikura Community Campus or Ngā Tai o

Kura Campus.AWA: It means river. The

metaphor takes the idea of four separate and connected streams (representing the school commu-nities) coming together over time into a single larger body of water.

It represents a braided river, common in Canterbury, which by nature changes course over time. Furthermore, the acronym rep-resents the four schools closing: Aranui primary and high schools, Wainoni primary and Avondale primary. The name selected for the school could be; Te Awa School or Ngā Awa Campus.

Eastern Community Campus: It signifies a collaboration of edu-cation in the east of Christchurch, based around the strong local community.

Andy Kai Fong has been named the principal of the school.

Mr Kai Fong spent four years as principal at Hornby High between 2000 and 2004 and four years as assistant principal at Lincoln High School.

He is currently working as the head of secondary at Hong Kong’s Discovery College, which like Aranui, is a year 1-13 campus.

He says there is a need to leverage the community engagement and successes of the four schools that will be part of the Aranui Community Campus.

Neighbourhood Week is com-ing around for another year, and applications for funding are now open.

The annual event will run from October 23 to November 1 and is aimed at bringing people and communities together.

The New Brighton Community Garden participates in Neigh-bourhood Week and uses it as its big opening day of the year.

Administrator Joyce Bailey said they have been participating in the week for more than five years and it was fantastic to have a little bit of support each year to allow them to have a big open day.

“It’s wonderful, we appreciate it a lot more with the little bit of funding that comes with it. We are part of the community and the more exposure we get is great.”

They community garden had its 10-year anniversary in April and has more than 150 registered volunteers.

The Wainoni-Avonside Com-munity Services Trust also participates in Neighbourhood Week.

City council community facilities are available for hire for a small fee and groups can also book a park or reserve to hold it.

It can be a small or large get-together, but is mostly about getting to know people who live close to you.

Applications for funding close on August 28.

Funding applications can be made here http://www.ccc.govt.nz/culture-and-community/events-and-festivals/annual-events/neighbourhood-week/

New Brighton youths have raised more than $2600 for children in Bangladesh.

The money was raised for the World Vision 40hr Famine through a sleepover at Youth Alive Trust.

The famine challenge meant going without food for a day.

Youth Alive Trust co-ordinator Amber Paterson said the young people, who are part of the Rock Solid Club, took fundraising to new heights this year.

“Young people often get bad

media for being self-absorbed, but this is just another example of our local young people doing an awe-some thing for people they don’t even know.”

The funds raised through this

year’s famine will go towards establishing emergency feeding programmes, teaching families how to grow vegetables, and improving access to health and nutrition services.

$2600 for hungry childrenTOP EFFORT: Rock Solid Club members raised more than $2600 for starving children in Bangladesh.

The Queen is in her 64th year as the reign-ing monarch, which is about the same amount of time the Linwood/Avonside Plunket Mothers’ Club has been meeting.

They started their group in the 1950s and met two weeks ago to mark about 60 years of motherhood and annual meetings.

While the club has moved on from the Plunket rooms, they still meet at least once a year to reminisce and remember the crazy things they did to raise funds for Plunket including staging a massive mock wedding.

The ages of the group range from their mid-70s to the oldest, Doreen Jones, who is 89.

The women originally met once a month in the Plunket rooms at Woodham Park.

They used to hold sewing days, social gatherings and suppers to raise money for Plunket.

Three east Christchurch schools have helped out with a public planting day at Travis Wetland.

Last weekend, the Avon/Otakaro Cluster Group which included students from Shirley Boys’, Avonside Girls’ high schools, Waitakiri and Cotswold schools took part in the public planting day.

In 90min, about 350 trees and plants were established around Tra-

vis Wetlands and Dudley Creek.Led by Wellington-based

Oliver Vetter of Sustainable Coastlines, the objective was to develop a food source for indigenous wildlife as well as help to purify the wetland water by slowing run-off.

As the trees grow, they will eventually create shade and cool the water so that the existing whitebait spawning grounds are better protected.

Linwood schools could be in line to receive weekly youth develop-ment courses in 2016.

The Foundation for Youth De-velopment started up in Hornby, and after huge success, plan to raise enough funds to make the move east to Linwood.

FYD Canterbury regional man-ager, Noeline Allan was excited that a team would be given the chance to make a difference in Linwood’s “struggling” commu-nity.

“We will modify the pro-gramme in Hornby, rather than in

Linwood. As we do now, we will go into the schools, which is done on a class-by-class basis, weekly.

We’ve seen extremely good

results, all our work is monitored, and next year will be no different,” she said.

FYD still have a lot of ground to make up if they want to make the planned move a reality. The expected cost for having a team in Hornby and a team in Linwood, is around $160,000; a figure which Ms Allan has been working hard to raise.

“I’m currently working to raise the $160,000 to put in place two new KiwiCan programmes. We’re in dialogue with a lot of significant funders, a lot of fundraising is under way. This has been a major thrust for my work over the past two months.”

BY KYLE KNOWLES

A former New Brighton boy was on the beach when a great white shark attacked Australian surfer Mick Fanning.

Veteran surfer Iain ‘Ratso’ Buchanan, was only 50m away, in the judging tower in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, last month.

Buchanan grew up surfing along the New Brighton coastline and his parents’ home is still in Waimairi beach.

The head priority judge on the World Surf League saw the attack unfold.

“I pretty much just saw what you saw on TV, the tail came up behind him and it was pretty obvious what it was straight away.

It was pretty surreal watching it, thinking the worst was going to happen.”

Fanning was sitting in the water waiting for the start of the final in the J-Bay Open when the shark appeared.

He fended off the shark with his board as it bit through his leg rope.

He escaped without a scratch.Buchanan spoke to Fanning later

that night about the attack at a party for the surfers, staff and crew.

“He just expressed how bloody lucky he was and how he was just thanking his lucky stars. He seemed to be handling it okay but said he’d be having some nightmares.”

Just days before the close call

with Fanning, Buchanan was shark diving off the South Afri-can coast.

He said within two minutes of putting bait in the water there were great whites circling.

Buchanan said the captain of the boat was telling him sharks were intelligent creatures and would investigate something in the water, like a surfer.

He said the sharks would sit just below the surface of the water and if you were sitting on a surfboard in the water you wouldn’t be able to spot them.

Buchanan is a five-time New Zealand surfing champion and an ASP world grandmasters champion.

The New Brighton Museum is proud to present to the com-munity our monthly review of events, by Jennifer Eder.

The Golden Oldie movies for August are: Topper, 1937, on the 10th, starring Cary Grant; Secret Mission, 1942, on the 17th; Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, 1946, on the 24th; and The Loves of Joanna Godden, 1947, on the 31st. Come early for a cuppa and a chat, and the films start at 1.30pm. Admis-sion costs a $2 donation.

The museum continued its renovations in July, with the ad-dition of several new displays, including one for each school, and a corner dedicated to the New Brighton Pier.

We have also acquired two large bookcases, and filled them with books about New Brighton and Canterbury’s history for the public to peruse.

Did you know? New Brigh-ton had its own miniature rifle club? The rifle club’s earliest recorded meetings were in 1918, in the tramway sheds on the Esplanade, which is now

Marine Parade.Founding members include

Harry Nelson Hawker, the eldest son of the father of New Brighton, G. T. Hawker, and committee member of the New Brighton Library; soon to be Mayor Captain Alfred Owles; and George William Bishop, son of first New Brighton mayor R. C. Bishop, and first teacher and headmaster of New Brighton School.

In the 1920s, locals started a ladies’ club to rival the men’s club. However, only the men’s club was able to enjoy ‘smoke concerts’ at its annual meetings, smoking and talking politics while a band played.

The New Brighton Minia-ture Rifle Club moved to the Rawhiti Domain golf club building in 1952.

Learn more about the rifle club and its members at the New Brighton Museum.

The museum is open from 10am-noon Mondays, and ev-ery other day 1-3pm. We take bookings for school groups and community functions.

A new breastfeeding group has started up in New Brighton.

It will take place every Wednesday from 10am-noon at the Grace Vineyard Beach Campus, Seaview Rd.

With support from Youth Alive Trust and Rural Can-terbury Primary Health Or-ganisation, volunteer mothers who are trained breastfeeding peer supporters will offer help, advice and encouragement to mothers and babies through breastfeeding challenges.

Rural Canterbury PHO lactation consultant Ruth O’Donovan said: “Although there are breastfeeding groups in Aranui, Linwood and Shir-ley, many mothers do not have their own transport and there-

fore need a group that is within walking distance from their home.

“It is important to note that all mothers are welcome irre-spective of how they are feed-ing their baby.

“We encourage pregnant women to attend so they be-come familiar with possible breastfeeding challenges and to get a realistic perspective of breastfeeding.

Mothers do not necessarily need a breastfeeding problem to attend the group.

For more details on the daily breastfeeding support groups provided by Rural Canterbury, check out the Facebook page, Mother4Mother Breastfeeding Support.

For anyone having to get dentures fitted, it can seem a daunting prospect, and it’s natural to feel apprehensive about what lies ahead.

However, if you are in that situation, you will be put at your ease and the whole process will be made as smooth and trouble-free as possible when you have the work done by the friendly, experienced team at Denture South.

Clinical technician Andrew Johnson, who has owned and operated the business for 12 and a half years, has a team of professionals, including clinical and lab technicians, who provide a full range of denture services. These include first-time immediate dentures, full replacement dentures, partial plates and sports mouthguards.

Most clients are referred to Denture South by their dentist, Andrew says, and the technicians and dentist work as a team, ensuring their clients, particularly those having first-time dentures, are made to feel comfortable.

“There’s a lot of planning required, so when we first meet the client we explain

Friendly team makes denture fitting

the procedures and what they can expect. Then after the dentures have been fitted, we take extra care to make sure they are coping well,” Andrew says.

“We help them transition through the initial stages of having their new dentures. Then we follow up with them a week after the fitting, and it’s ongoing from there over the next six months. That follow-through is very important.”

There are two Denture South clinics catering for residents across the southern and western suburbs of Christchurch, one in Barrington St, and the other in Brynley St, Hornby. Both clinics have off-street parking.

Many Denture South clients come through word-of-mouth referral, an indication of the level of satisfaction that’s provided there. Friendly, approachable and highly skilled, the Denture South team enjoys offering that service, and helping people who need to have new dentures fitted feel as comfortable and confident as possible throughout the procedure and go on to manage their new teeth with ease.

EAT TALK SMILE

Canterbury’s leading company specialising in complete denture services.

Live life confidently with advanced dental and denture care.

[Edition datE] 3

The staff at Burwood Pharmacy pride themselves on their friendly, community-based approach and welcome all

customers, both new and existing, with a smile.

They are conveniently located on Parnwell St with heaps of free, on-road parking and are open throughout the week. They offer

a full range of pharmacy services and are

always happy to take the time to discuss any health concerns with their customers. Whether you want help to stop smoking, take advice on healthy weight and nutrition or need emergency contraception, their

sensible, practical and discreet approach will make you feel comfortable and confident when discussing your needs.

At this time of year, the coughs, colds and flu season is in full swing, and the team at Burwood Pharmacy can provide information on the most suitable treatments for all ages. And if you are lucky enough to be escaping the Christchurch winter for a holiday abroad they can provide products to keep you safe and well while you are on vacation.

They believe in providing that extra special service to their customers. They have a large range of over the counter medications and can support you with medicine management. They will help you understand what medications you are taking and what they are designed to do and any possible side effects to look out for, and they will make sure that any non-prescription medications will not affect your prescription drugs. For customers who need additional help, they offer free delivery within the local area, and they can put your regular medications into blister packs for even more convenience.

As well as their dispensary services, Burwood Pharmacy has a large selection of gifts and toiletries available. There is certainly something for everyone, and they provide a free gift wrapping service. They have a variety of cosmetics and their customer loyalty card means that if you want to purchase the same product again, the information has been recorded. The cards are a way for the team to say ‘thank you’ to customers for their loyalty as if you spend only $300, you receive a $20 gift voucher. Their popular annual shopping night is held in the spring and is full of specials when it’s time to start thinking about Christmas.

Call in to see them at 11 Parnwell St, Burwood, or ring 03 383 4814 for a relaxed and helpful chat about your pharmacy needs.

Aidanfield Christian School is a Year 1 to 10 school which continues to grow strongly, becoming well established in the Halswell area. We

enjoy spacious grounds, modern classrooms and being actively involved in supporting the wider Halswell community. Principal Mark Richardson says that the roll has continued to grow and we are likely to finish this year with a very healthy figure of over 250 students.

As a very diverse cultural and denominational group, we learn from and support each other through the learning journey. Innovative programmes are in place to best support our student learners in areas of academic achievement, character development and looking at exploring authentic purposes for each pupil. We have some parents who are non–church attending,

supporting the knowledge that there is a strong desire among parents for the values system that really good Christian schooling can consistently apply to life at school.

Aidanfield Christian School is owned by The Christian Schools Trust, which has a long history of providing top quality Christian education. The trust has invested heavily into Aidanfield Christian School and as a result all of the learning spaces are attractive learning environments.

A new school hall is currently under construction and planning is already underway for further classroom developments in 2016 as the school roll grows.

“Our community is demonstrating confidence in the learning that happens at Aidanfield Christian School,” says Mr Richardson.

Special expertise at Hornby HighIn their first years at Hornby High School,

year 7 and 8 students are supported by teachers with special expertise of the age level who enable them to transition

successfully from primary school into their middle schooling years. A unique curriculum has been designed especially for the year 7 to 9 students to provide the foundation for the senior qualification years. The core learning areas of reading, writing and maths are integrated with specialist subjects such as Science, Languages and the Arts to provide rich and varied topics. Innovative and flexible teaching methods are used to ensure students’ learning needs are individualised. Students have access to high quality digital devices which they use for both collaborative and independent learning.

Health and Physical Education are taught at

all levels, with the students participating in a wide range of fitness and skill-based learning activities and an award-winning sports programme. Students have opportunities for education outside the classroom with camps and cultural exchanges. Students work with specialist technology teachers in learning design processes in wood, electronics, fabric and food. There are opportunities to learn musical instruments, join the junior choir and participate in drama events.

The school values are an integral part of the learning programmes helping students to develop the skills and attitudes needed for personal and academic success. The middle years of schooling are important stages of learning in which students can discover their strengths and interests in subjects which will lead them to qualifications and career choices.

Cathedral Grammar, where the best of 135 years of teaching experience goes hand-in-hand with the

best of new and proven educative thinking – because only the best is good enough for your child!

Our classrooms have walls; our pupils have desks; our maths curriculum is a real foundation for life, not a failing numeracy project; and our literature programme is rich in the greatest children’s books – the best of the old and the new.

Alongside this, we have specialist science and art, wide-ranging history and geography reinforced by a comprehensive calendar of outdoor education and a world-class music programme taught by some of the top musicians in the city. From wearable arts to robotics to sport, whether taking to the stage or taking to the mountains, Grammar is always abuzz.

But don’t just take our word for it.Chris started in February. “I like

being at Grammar. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.” Chris’s mother Sharon adds, “As parents, we couldn’t be happier with

Cathedral Grammar as the choice for our son in Year 7. He has fitted right in; is nurtured, challenged and exceeding his own expectations.”

Dion and Vivien only joined Grammar in Term 3. When asked to give his first day a mark out of 10, Dion replied instantly: ‘452!’ Vivien feels her “education is better and I am far more challenged”.

Susan emailed after her daughter spent three terms in Year 4 when the family had to move to Christchurch unexpectedly. “To know Briar was enrolled in such an amazing school, where she was looked after, well-educated and accepted, took away a huge amount of stress! The education she received has been life-changing for her. She has become a much more motivated student and also a more moral citizen. She has been exposed to a much higher level of education and opportunity than I would have ever thought possible.”

To long-standing parent Reetah, “It’s of huge importance that Bruno and Milly view Grammar as their Turangawaewae – their place to stand, their place to speak and be

Tamariki School’s unique philosophy

We are different in many ways from other schools, as

we focus on supporting each child to learn the strategies of life and to grow in all areas - emotionally, socially, cognitively and more. We provide a meaningful education, and this is evidenced by the fact that past students send their own children to Tamariki.

Tamariki School was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in providing an environment that would support primary-aged children to develop the awareness and abilities needed to positively impact their own lives. The founders were influenced by the Playcentre movement, the teachings of Dr M Bevan-Brown, a local psychiatrist, and the experiences and writing of the educator A S Neill (founder of Summerhill School, UK).

A key principle at

Tamariki is that play enables children to deepen understanding about their world, themselves and others in a relaxed way. Another principle is community awareness, and frequent whole school meetings are used to discuss ideas and to reflect on how one person affects another.

We proudly use the Maori name that has been gifted to us, as we truly are a child-focused school and we welcome children of all cultural backgrounds.

heard, their place of belonging. They feel this is because the staff has supported and facilitated their learning, validated their opinions and made Grammar a place where they feel safe to express who they are. For that, the staff has my greatest respect and gratitude.”

If this is a perspective you’d like for your child, we’d love to meet you at Open Day on Tuesday, August 18. Alternatively, registrar Linda Marsh can arrange your tour to suit. Phone (03) 365.0385.

MERRIN SCHOOL INSPIRING STARS

Years 1 – 8

[Edition datE]

St Bernadette’s Catholic School is a hidden gem in Hornby. A place where children thrive in a values-based learning environment. Children are

supported to achieve their full potential and to experience success in a variety of situations. The school provides children with a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities.

The Special Catholic Character is woven through all areas of school life and is strengthened by a positive relationship with the parish. There are four values that also support the special character: compassion, excellence, responsibility and respect.

Kirkwood Intermediate School of Choice

Kirkwood is a state, co-educational intermediate school. Everything we do, everything we have and all of our plans for

the future are designed for children aged 10 to13 years old. These children are going through a real growth spurt – intellectually, emotionally and physically. The staff at Kirkwood are specialists with these Year 7 and 8 children, and recognise the very special attributes and challenges of this age group.

Kirkwood is an inclusive school with mixed ability classes and programmes to extend and enrich our children. We are also a very well-resourced school. We have eight

Become a Year 7-8 at Oaklands School

Oaklands School is a decile 9, full primary school in Halswell. As students move into Year 7-8, we aim to help them become

more resourceful, learn to communicate in a wide variety of ways and develop a sense of shared ownership in the life of the school.

They are encouraged to become independent learners who have the necessary skills to take on leadership roles within the school and in the wider community.

Research shows that if students feel a strong sense of belonging, they will have greater motivation and purpose in their daily engagement with staff and fellow students. They also learn to identify how they might contribute to the good of the community.

The focus for the Year 7 and 8s is on consolidating skills in literacy and numeracy along with encouraging students to develop the key competencies through our values programme. These are the skills they will need to be successful, lifelong learners.

In addition to these core areas, the Year 7-8 programme also covers Physical Education & Health, the Arts, Languages, Integrated Studies (Science, Social Studies, Technology), Careers and Te Reo Maori. They also participate in an annual leadership conference, fundraising activities towards the Year 8 Wellington camp, and in sports our Year 7-8s also participate in the Koru Games.

If you would like more information about our intermediate programmes, please contact Oaklands School on 03 322 8735.

specialist technology rooms, a dedicated art room, spacious grounds, a modern challenge course and hard court areas for netball, basketball and other games.

Our teaching resources are modern, our computer network is up-to-date and highly specified, and our classrooms are safe and vibrant places for children to work and learn.

Kirkwood is a very special school. Our children choose to come here. The children and their parents see something about our school that appeals to them, and I believe our reputation is second to none.

When the Merrin School students came back to Term 3, they also came back to a new learning environment.

Over the last holiday break several classrooms were altered to remove walls to make our learning environment bigger and better.

Merrin School now has open plan classrooms with the latest shaped tables and bean bags in recognition of the different learning styles that students prefer. This open plan environment allows the students to flow between our classes with our self regulated learning. We are one of a growing number of schools adopting this change in the new learning style. We have BYOD (bring your own device) that runs from Year Four through to Year Eight. This allows the students to do their research online without having to wait for free devices, and enables students to access online learning sites that they use at their own learning level instead of at a general class level.

South New Brighton’s Got Talent!Students from South New Brighton

School, a full primary school going to Year 8, are presently auditioning for their own ‘SNBS’s Got Talent’

competition. This is proving to be very popular, giving many students an opportunity to shine. It is bringing out a wide range of talents and abilities. The categories are: Solo and Group singing, dance, instrumental and ‘entertainment’.

The school has a senior rock band who had the wonderful opportunity to work for two days with Hera, a professional singer/songwriter. With her, they produced four amazing original songs. SNBS was also lucky enough to have Stan Walker (recording artist, winner of Australian Idol and judge of the The X Factor NZ) visit them after a student

had won an opportunity to attend the Under 20 FIFA World Cup with him in his role as Youth Ambassador. Stan had the students very excited and singing along with him. Both these fabulous opportunities motivated students to ‘have a go’ for an audition.

With the talents on display, there will be

‘The Unforgettables’ performing Riptide by Vance Joy.

no shortage for future rock band members. Following the earthquakes, the school doesn’t have a hall to use so finalists will have the opportunity to perform in front of the school in their outdoor Whanauhui, and they are sure some parents will be very surprised! South New Brighton School’s certainly got talent.

St Mark’s School in Opawa is enjoying a very successful year and has commenced a rebuilding programme which will further enrich the learning

environment for students and staff. Additional innovative teaching/learning areas include up-to-date Science, Music, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Physical Education facilities, a large multipurpose learning area and an Info Centre replacing the traditional library. These will complement our well-resourced school. Some will be available for use in

St Mark’s - a school with a special characterTerm 1 and others progressively during 2016.

Many students and their parents from throughout Christchurch choose to enroll at St Mark’s to take advantage of its special character as an integrated Anglican School and the strong “family values based” environment. We emphasise positive personal relationships and pastoral care.

Our students have enjoyed remarkable successes in academic, cultural and sporting areas this year. Teaching is child-centered, and the smaller class and school sizes enable

us to group students or provide personalised learning according to needs.

Each unit has two parking spaces, and about 114sqm of floor area, on two levels the options are there for the right buyer. Located so close to the boutique shopping of the Tannery, in an up and coming area, the demand is there for commercial and residential tenants alike. An easy drive in to town, and also to the beach for the up and coming summer evenings. These units are being sold separately, but don’t limit yourself to just the one unit.

Hailing from Dunedin,

Valley Bluegrass say they are the southernmost bluegrass band in the world. This may actually be true!

Bluegrass Music can be described as an infectious high energy blend of old time country, blues, ragtime, Celtic with a dash of rock n roll. These guys, with their traditional line-up of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro (guitar), and bass fiddle (upright bass), master it perfectly.

Since forming in 2013, Valley Bluegrass has been in hot demand playing festivals and featured concerts. And in keeping with the spirit of the music, they busk regularly at the Otago Farmer's Market - delighting customers and stall holders with their upbeat tunes and songs.

Catch them on their mini-tour around Christchurch this weekend - Friday 14th August, 7pm at Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn on Kilmore St; Saturday 15th August, 8pm at Gustav's in the Woolston Tannery; and at the Christchurch Folk Club in the Irish Society Hall, 29 Domain Tce, Spreydon on Sunday 16th August, 7.30pm.
