Koru Care Annual Charity Auction

The vintage guardians of New Zealand’s skies formed a winged guard of honour for the guests attending the Koru Care Annual

Charity Auction, as they fi led past to take their places at the dinner tables on July 19. The Air Force Museum’s Aircraft Hall was fi lled with music and the cacophony of the loud and lively bidding for the luxury items, in which was the smartest and biggest hanger party of the year.

Following the dinner, and with attendees emptier in the pocket than at the beginning of the evening, the counting could begin to eventually

enable Koru Care children to take their dream holiday to Disneyland. Canterbury people stepped out on a cold and rainy night and with the national carrier, Air New Zealand, celebrated the 30th Koru Care anniversary in style and with generosity.

Distance learning became per-sonal for two Marian College students after a recent trip to Wellington to meet their class and teacher for the first time.

Jovana Riordan and Georgia Harrison study year 12 eco-nomics as part of the school distance learning programme, a national initiative where stu-dents undertake lessons via Skype.

Jovana found the trip “really enjoyable, especially our visits to the Reserve Bank and Par-liament.”

For Georgia the high-light was meeting her 35 fel-low classmates as well as her Auckland-based teacher, in the flesh, for the first time.

Distance learning has prov-en to be an “interesting way of learning” for Jovana, an ex-perience she is keen to repeat with the year 13 economics paper she hopes to undertake next year.

“It’s been a fantastic oppor-tunity to be involved with lead-ing-edge education,” she said.

Georgia found the self-discipline required with distance learning had other benefits as well.

“My time management skills have really improved since I

started doing distance learn-ing at Marian, and it’s been great to have Jovana alongside me to bounce ideas off as well,” she said.

Hearing the life stories of a vari-ety of high achievers has moti-vated a group of Marian College year 12 students to continue to serve their local communities.

At the recent Sir Peter Blake Trust Emerging Leaders’ Con-ference, student leaders from throughout Christchurch heard what was possible when there was a dedication to achieve.

Marian College student Fran-ces Daly said the keynote speak-er, William Pike, was amazing to listen to.

“He talked about overcom-ing challenges and using it to turn his life into something posi-tive”.

Mr Pike suffered life-threaten-ing injuries and had his right leg amputated as a young climber, after being caught in a volcanic eruption on Mount Ruapehu in 2007.

In recent years he has estab-lished the William Pike Chal-lenge Award, New Zealand’s most popular outdoor education programme for primary school children.

Mr Pike’s story also left a strong impression on student Tessa Barrett-Walker.

“His message about having confidence and never underesti-mating your ability to be a leader was really relevant.

“At Marian leadership happens as a progression.  You get op-portunities to lead right through from year nine, so it builds your confidence and ability to make a change at our school and in our communities”.

The Emerging Leaders’ Con-ference was run by the Sir Peter Blake Trust at Christ’s College, and is designed to develop lead-ership skills in young people.

A memorial sculpture of Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku near the New Brighton Pier may be approved this week.

The sculpture would commemo-rate the visit of Kahanamoku to New Brighton nearly 100 years ago.

The New Brighton Pier, Foreshore and Promotion Society, hope to see the sculpture completed in time for the centenary.

The Olympic gold medal winning swimmer visited in February 1915, where he gave the first modern surf-ing demonstration recorded in New Zealand.

Society secretary, Madeline Find-ley, has met with city council staff to discuss the location of the sculpture.

She said that there was a lot of pa-perwork involved in getting approv-al for the site and sculpture plans ticked off by an engineer and city council staff.

She hoped that the society could get approval to start the project soon.

“We’re pretty confident that we’ll get the approval soon, and we have the funding in place ready to start.”

New Brighton artist Bon Suter has been commissioned to make the sculpture.

It is likely to be about 8m long, crafted from concrete which would be polished to give it a glazed shine.

Local craftspeople are already lined up to help with creating the frame, the concrete for the sculpture, while several people have volun-teered to sand and polish the piece.

The society hopes to place it in the grassed area to the south of the pier.

About $25,000 of funding has

been set aside by the society, and further funding is still being sought for lighting.

Extra funding would allow the so-ciety to light the sculpture.

• 5mins with Bon Suter, page 6 and 8

Surf legend site close to decision

BIG SURF: Olympic swimmer and the ‘father of modern surfing’, Duke Kahanamoku, gave the first recorded surfing demonstration in New Zealand at New Brighton almost 100 years ago.

• From page 1He said that many of the

ideas in the master plan de-pended on private investment, but many business owners he knows had lost confidence in the city council.

“If they’re planning to rail-road the same master plan that the community didn’t support, they are not going to get buy in from landowners.”

Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board deputy chairman Tim Baker said a lot of people who had said they would like to make submissions now didn’t want to.

Most said they would rather see the plan go ahead as it was than have it delayed any further.

Several people who made submissions were included in the city council Community Advisory Group, and felt that their thoughts had been heard through that process.

But others said they were disappointed they would not be able to speak, including Waimairi Beach resident Jill Summer.

“I can understand it has been a long time, but I still think it is a bit of a shame that people haven’t had the oppor-tunity to be heard.”

Burwood-Pegasus ward city councillors David East and Glenn Livingstone both supported the move not to

hold consultation.Cr East said it was impor-

tant to speed up the process, so items could be included in the city council long-term plan.

City councillor Yani Johan-son said he was surprised the community board did not want to hold hearings.

“I’m also mindful that in your ward there are a lot of groups like Maori and Paci-fica that are much more oral cultures, rather than written cultures, so it seems to me that you are missing an opportu-nity to engage with people.”

However, he supported the move not to hold hearings.

“I’m happy to support the local community board – they are the ones who will have to deal with the community over having hearings or not having hearings.”

Mr Baker said he stood by the decision.

“I think you’re right, we are missing an opportunity. But there has been massive consultation done already, and people that we’ve spoken to individually who were look-ing at making a submission 18 months ago now said they don’t wish to. So we’re pretty confident.”

The draft plan will need to be put to the city council again before it is approved.

BORN TO SURF: Duke lived in downtown Honolulu his whole life and became a beach boy at Waikiki. Today, there is a statue in Waikiki of Duke.

More than $1300 was raised at a classic car show in Burwood last week, towards the work of a re-tired couple who developed the red-zone land.

Brian and Colleen Fairbairn have spent hundreds of hours and more than $4000 of their own money to transform the land into a well-kept park.

The area they have cleared covers five or six hectares, about the area of five rugby fields.

Last week, about 500 people gathered at a classic car show there, to raise money for the couple.

Mr Fairbairn said that he was honoured by the donations, but

the thing he appreciated most was seeing the community use the land.

“Kids were playing in the mid-dle of the garden – you could hear them laughing and playing all day. That was what this was all about.”

Mr Fairbairn said that the donations would allow them to buy sprays for killing weeds, build more planting boxes and pay for petrol for their lawnmower.

More than $1000 has already been privately donated towards the couple’s work through a Givealittle page.

Canterbury Earthquake Re-covery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton personally praised

the work of the couple, saying they were a great example of community spirit.

But a CERA spokesman said he would not encourage people to do similar things in their own areas.

He said that there could be hazards in parts of the red zone that had not yet been cleared.

“If people want to do something similar to what Brian and Colleen are doing, they are best to contact CERA to discuss it.”

Mr Fairbairn said that staff from CERA had ordered him to stop when he started clearing the red-zoned land in Burwood.

He said he was told by staff that he would need a “red-zone

pass” in order to work on the land, but he ignored them.

He believed that the organisa-tion could be doing more to in-volve the community in its work.

But he acknowledged that CERA had “enough on their plate”.

“CERA has 500 hectares of land to look after. I have five, and that’s hard enough.”

Mr Sutton said that the organ-isation spent more than $3 mil-lion a year on maintenance of red zone land.

“If Brian and Colleen were not giving up their time to do this work, the full maintenance of these sites would be taken care of by CERA contractors, as it is right across the red zones.

So, tell me what you’re working on at the moment?

I’ve got an exhibition I’ll be hanging on Friday, out in Darfield. The exhibition will be a mix of paintings and sculp-ture. I’ll have five pieces in it from a bit of series, alongside the work of two other artists.

Last time we spoke you were looking for an engineer to help with your Duke Kahanamoku wave sculpture. Did you find one?

I’m still looking. I have just been ringing the council about it this morning, and I’ve already rang around a few of my friends, but no one seems to know any-one who could do it.

Why do you need an engi-neer to help with this piece?

Because it is extremely large, and it’s important that it is com-pletely safe.

Have you ever done anything of this scale before?

I’ve never done anything this large. It will be 8m long, or

maybe even 9m – we have not confirmed yet, because they haven’t yet confirmed the bud-get. Everything I’ve done so far has been on a volunteer basis.

How long have you worked as a sculptor?

I’ve been sculpting for around 30 years. It was while I was working on a movie, way back then, that I was inspired to start sculpting. At the beginning I al-ways did a lot of clay work, and I went to a pottery studio at Mt Pleasant to learn how to work clay. It was around that time that limestone came into fashion and I did a symposium focusing on limestone.

From then on I have hardly looked back. I love that process of taking away, rather than add-ing as is done in clay. Since then I’ve done a few ice sculptures, and some work overseas – I was sent with some other artists to our sister city in Adelaide to work on some projects there. I’ve done a few council commis-sions, including the large koru out the back of Stanmore Rd, which was quite a big challenge.

You mentioned that you were working on a movie 30 years ago. What were you doing?

My friend, Trixie, was a costume designer and I was her helper. It really wasn’t my thing.

So what was it that inspired you to start sculpting?

At the time I just wanted to find what I was, and what I wanted to do. The movie is called Illustrious Energy, and in it there were circus scenes with some amazing papier mache sculptures. I absolutely loved them. I had just returned from travelling the world for about 18 months and, looking back at my photos, they were all of sculptures.

Where did you travel? Or would it be easier to list where you didn’t go?

Probably. I went all through Asia and all through Europe, and

I came home via Sri Lanka where I stayed for three months. I made some amazing friends there who have remained friends – which is why I went to Hawaii this year, to create a commission for one of my friends.

After all your travel to exotic locations, what is it that keeps you coming back to South New Brighton?

I love living in South New Brighton. It’s being beside the beach. I’m a country girl – I grew up in Akaroa – so for me its like heaven. Sometimes I go for wanders down the beach, and I’m the only one out there.

Carving out a reputationSouth New Brighton artist Bon Suter is about to start work on a giant sculpture near the pier, to mark 100 years since the visit of Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku to the area. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about her work across the world, in movies, on people’s feet and on the dunes of New Brighton.

•From page 6I’ve heard legends of your

sculpture garden. How did it start?

I was working on some sculp-tures with a friend, a deaf and blind guy called Donald Gibson. I needed more space for the work, so I asked council if I could use the sand dunes opposite my house.

Since then I got several well-known sculptures from across the country, and one English man too, to create sculptures there, and I’ve developed a garden around them.

Do you get a lot of visitors stop by to see it?

I do get quite a lot, mainly over-seas visitors. Because I’ve chosen to live in south New Brighton, it’s the road to nowhere really, not many people come down this way. So it’s mostly tourists.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing?

I would still be working as a reflexologist, or I do like working with people with disabilities as well.

I worked for a few years in nurs-ing, but at that stage I had three little children, so I left nursing and studied alternative health. I started a clinic and worked for several years as a reflexologist, but I was the only one at that stage and I had so many people coming to me that I burnt myself out. So I decided to massage stone, not people’s feet!

Do you think you’d ever go back to it?

No. I still do it for free for my friends sometimes if they have

something ailing them. There’s always been that stereo-

type of the starving artist – how difficult is it to actually make a living from your work?

It’s very hard. You never ever get paid enough for the hours you put in to a piece. I’ve already put in about 100 hours for this wave, which I won’t be paid for, and I’ve spent a fair amount on materials. It will probably cost me more than I will get back.

So what is it that keeps you working as an artist?

The thing I love most is just the fact that I am my own boss and can do my own thing completely. I either do some gardening or get out and work on the sculptures. If it’s a lovely day, there’s nothing better than being out on the dunes.

You mentioned your three small children – they can’t be very small anymore. Do they still live nearby?

I’m incredibly lucky, because almost all my family live in South New Brighton. My children have

all grown up and live in South New Brighton, although one is in Bali and one in England at the mo-ment. They both still have houses here and plan to come back. The third had his house here too, but he’s living with me at the moment as his place was badly damaged in the quakes. It’s lovely to have them so close because I have three grandchildren now as well.

My sister’s here and my brother is in Woolston, so he’s not too far away.

That must be unusual these

days. Why do you think they’ve all stayed so close?

It think it’s just really nice to be so close to family, and it’s a beauti-ful place to live.

What are your favourite things to do in your free time – if you have free time.

I love walking. I love tramping and going out into the bush, and I love wandering the beach.

What about music? Is there anything you particularly like to listen to while you work?

I usually listen to the national radio programmes to be honest. I quite like classical and blues style, and I went to a concert in Lyttelton the other day which was wonderful – I love to listen to music live.

You’ve visited a lot of amazing spots around the world – is there anywhere you would still like to visit?

At the top of my bucket list is Is-tanbul. All of my friends who have been there say it is breathtaking.

As far as your work goes, is there anything you would still like to create or achieve?

This great big wave that I’ve been commissioned to build is like the ultimate for me. I’m so hon-oured to be asked to do it, and so happy that I can create something for the community that I love. There are all sorts of challenges to working with concrete, so this stuff really appeals. And it’s a collabora-tive project, which means I won’t be doing all the back-breaking work on my own.

FOODSlow-roasted Middle Eastern-style lamb legBeautifully slow-roasted lamb is a delight to share with family or dinner guests. Serve with flat bread moistened with a little harissa sauce or drizzle it over the lamb for some extra flavour. It keeps well in the refrigerator.

Lamb4 Tbsp Olive oil1 Leg of lamb3 cm Fresh ginger, crushed3 cloves Garlic, crushed1 Lemon, rind and juice1 bunch Fresh coriander, chopped2 cups Water

Spice mix1 tsp Ground cloves2 tsp Black pepper1 tsp Fennel seeds2 tsp Ground cumin1 tsp Ground cinnamon1 Tbsp Paprika1 tsp Salt

Salad and sauce2 Lebanese cucumber1 cup Plain unsweetened yoghurt1 tsp Flaky sea salt1 cup Mint leaves2 tsp Sumac powder120g Tomatoes, chopped20g Tomato paste20g Harissa paste1 Tbsp Olive oil

DirectionsScore the surface of the lamb with a sharp knife, making 2cm slits in the fat and skin.

Put the ginger, garlic, coriander, lemon rind and juice and oil in a small bowl and mix well. Add the spice mix ingredients and stir in.

Rub the marinade over the surface of the lamb, working it into the cuts. Leave it at room temperature for an hour or refrigerate overnight so the flavours are absorbed.

Preheat the oven to 150 deg C.Put the lamb into a roasting pan with 2

cups of water, cover with foil, then roast for about 3½ hours or until the meat is very tender.

Baste often with the liquid in the pan. Remove the foil, then increase the heat a little for 20-30 minutes so the skin becomes crisp. Remove from the oven and rest the meat before slicing.

Serve with Middle Eastern-style flat bread and the accompaniments listed below.

Cucumber, mint and yoghurt saladPeel the cucumber lightly and cut into thin strips. Place these in a small serving bowl and toss well with the yoghurt and salt. Add the mint leaves and gently toss through so that they are just mixed but not drowned by the yoghurt. Sprinkle the sumac over the top and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

Tomato and harissa sauceCombine the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, harissa paste, tablespoon of olive oil and salt.

y FoodCultivate a zest for citrusL

UCKILY, vitamin C-richcitrus fruit areabundant at this time ofyear. Sneezes and coldsare rife and citrus offer

a zesty boost to health, providing high levels of vitaminC, potassium, fibre plus folate—also known as folic acid— a Bgroup vitamin important for cellgrowth and development.Botanists have calculated

that the history of citrus fruit—native to China and SoutheastAsia— goes back 20millionyears. Early explorers to theEast discovered the tangy, juicy,

bright orange that quicklygained popularity in Europe, and— byway of ChristopherColumbus— in the NewWorld.Mandarins, oranges,

grapefruit, sanguinelli (bloodoranges), ugli fruit, lemons, limes and tangelos are but a fewof the citrus varieties now

cultivated worldwide. Newvarieties are constantly beingdiscovered and developed.I am hooked onNewZealand

navel oranges— they have suchgreat colour, flavour and juicethat theymake other varieties oforange look pale in comparison. They are also easy to peel andsegment. In general, about three

oranges will yield one cup ofjuice. Two oranges will provide acup of diced fruit. One orangehas about 10 segments andwillyield about four teaspoons ofgrated rind.

Limes grow in tropical andsubtropical climates. Most NewZealand limes are still importedfrom the Pacific Islands. However, many of us now growour own. Lime juice and limezest is addictive and is a great—and healthy— substitute for saltin dishes. Limes are also anintegral ingredient of appetisingAsian recipes. The kaffir lime, common in

Thai and Vietnamese cooking, issmall with a skin that’s yellow-green, knobbly andwrinkled. The flesh is usually dry: it’s therind that is used in cooking plus

the glossy, dark green leave, which have a unique doubleshape and look like two leavesjoined end to end.The kaffir limes I grew in

Auckland had dry, pale, uselessflesh. The kaffir limes I’m nowcultivating in the ‘‘top of thesouth’’ (sheltered from frosts)are very juicy— and this juice isexcellent in dressings andmarinades. However, the flesh isstill bitter and unusable. I storemy surplus crop of fruit in thefreezer ready to put extra zestinto soups, meatballs andsauces.

HEALTH

Keep an eye on the early birdsDON’T trust a “morning person” in the evening because people who are perky in the early hours are more likely to be dishonest later in the day, researchers say.

Psychologists from three United States universities study-ing how the internal body clocks of humans influence their ethical choices found that when a person’s energy levels are depleted they find it harder to resist dishonour-able temptations. The converse is true of “night owls”, who are more likely to behave unethically in the morning.

The study, titled The Morality of Larks and Owls, examined the behaviour of 200 people who were given problem-solving tests and games to complete at different times of day without being told that the scientists were actually studying their honesty.

Building on previous research suggesting people become more unethical as the day wears on, the researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University and the University of Washington examined the relationship between energy patterns and ethics.

They focused on the human

circadian rhythm, or body clock, which controls wakefulness and sleep and varies across individuals, meaning that some people natu-rally rise early, while others prefer to stay up late.

One part of the study was a dice-rolling test, which took place either early in the morning (7 to 8.30) or late at night (midnight to 1.30). The participants were asked to roll the dice and report the number they threw, knowing that they would be paid higher cash rewards for higher numbers.

The team found that larks in the night session reported higher rolls than those in the morning session, while owls in the morning session reported higher rolls than owls in the night session.

The results tallied with the hypothesis that morning people would behave less honestly in the evening, when they were most tired, whereas night owls would do so in the morning.

The findings undermined the commonly held idea that early risers are more honest than people who regularly stay up into the early hours. “They cast doubt on the stereotype that evening people

are somehow dissolute,” the re-searchers said.

A summary of findings from the study, published in the Harvard Business Review, said: “In contrast to the assumption that good people typically do good things, and bad people do bad things, there is mounting evidence that good people can be unethical and bad people can be ethical,

depending on the pressures of the moment.”

One of the study’s authors, Sunita Sah of Georgetown Univer-sity, said the findings had implica-tions for businesses that relied on employees working late night and early morning shifts, as it proved that some people would be better at making decisions at certain times of day than others.

The authors also suggested that future research could be carried out to establish whether certain “interventions”, such as a mid-day nap, might redress the balance and make early risers more honest later in the day.

The findings will be outlined in full in the journal Psychological Science later this year. — Indepen-dent

Morning people are likely to be dishonest later in the day, says a body clock study. Antonia Molloy investigates

Built just over one year ago, you can grab this opportunity with con dence and move into a basically new home. Built by

certi ed builders and with landscaping designed by Chris Goom, you will know that the platform for success is big and you will not be disappointed.

e house consists of 258m2 facing north on a large 766m2 section with school zoning for Christchurch Boys High, St Albans Primary and Heaton Intermediate. Designed for the family with three living spaces, including a home theatre room with surround sound speakers in the ceiling, so it’s just like you’re at the movies! e kitchen is awesome with a butler’s pantry, induction hob and a convection oven, so as you can see it’s been built with a great budget and features all the extras! Heating is simple and e cient with two separate ducted heat pump systems catering for living and bedroom spaces. Warm throughout were the instructions upon design. For the family, there are four bedrooms plus a study and two executive standard bathrooms with undertile heating. Take my word for it, this is a quality property both inside and out and I recommend your viewing. Having already purchased their next property unconditionally, my sellers are realistic and determined to sell on or even before auction day. Don’t make a mistake and miss this one!

Are you living with the pain of arthritis? If you are, you may benefit from an exercise programme. Appropriate

exercise can result in reduced pain, reduced stiffness, improved function and better overall wellbeing.

Arthritis New Zealand offers both land and water-based exercise classes in Christchurch. These are held at various times and venues across the city.

An exciting new option is the PEDAL Programme. This joint initiative between Arthritis New Zealand and Sport Canterbury is a an eight-week programme combining stationary cycling and skills for people with arthritis affecting their lower limbs. This free programme commences on Monday, August 4. For further information on any of these exercise programmes, phone 0800 663 463 toll- free, or visit www.arthritis.org.nz.

There are 530,000 New Zealanders living with arthritis and it’s one of the leading causes of disability in New Zealand. And while it is certainly true that many older people have arthritis, it is completely misleading to think of arthritis as being an older person’s disease because arthritis can occur to anyone at any age.

Exercisecan relievearthritis pain Numerous studies have shown

Red Yeast Rice (RYR) extract to be an e ective, safer option to maintain healthy cholesterol

levels in most people. RYR has long been used in China as a natural preservative, spice and food colouring and is what gives the famous Peking duck its red colour. It has also been used for over a 1000 years as a common Chinese medicine, especially for digestion and healthy blood circulation.

Although RYR contains a nutrient called monacolin K that is chemically similar to the man-made chemical used in statin drugs, a main di erence is it is a natural substance that the body knows how to handle.

Reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease naturally

Glucosamine & Chondroitin essential for JOINT HEALTH

JOINT HEALTH

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is also known as degenerative joint disease, and it is characterised by loss

of cartilage and joint degeneration causing pain, joint sti ness and reduced mobility.

An essential building block for cartilage is glucosamine. Healthy joints actually make their own glucosamine, but only produce cartilage when glucosamine is plentiful. Researchers have found taking su cient glucosamine appears to trigger the joints’ own production of glucosamine and formation of new cartilage in many cases. It has also been shown to reduce pain and increase joint mobility better than taking

pharmaceutical pain relievers.Chondroitin sulphate is a natural part of

cartilage and connective tissue. Researchers have found if they supply the body with extra chondroitin from shark cartilage, this helps by supplying nutrients for the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue. It acts like a uid magnet, drawing uids and nutrients into the cartilage, enabling it to grow and be replaced.

Glucosamine and chondroitin in su cient amounts appear to have a synergistic a ect and may speed the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue.

Not only this, but RYR has also been shown to lower lipoprotein(a), a damaging blood fat that can have 10 times greater risk factor for cardiovascular disease than high LDL cholesterol.

Statins are known to reduce Co-Q10 levels that can cause muscle pain, aching joints, low energy and cardiovascular problems. As a precaution and for extra cardiovascular protection, CO-Q10 is added to RYR formulas.

GARDENING

Is your garden ready for the summer season?

A bit of quick colour can do wonders, so fill bowls with flowering plants like petunias, geraniums or lobellias.

Container plants are popular but when it comes to potting mix, confusion reigns. Is potting mix really necessary? Won’t soil do the same job?

And is it true that potting mix can be dangerous to handle?

Here are some answers to these common questions:

Why should I use a qual-ity potting mix?

A quality potting mix provides the best grow-ing medium for container plants.

Quality potting mixes, unlike soil, maintain a prop-er balance between holding moisture and draining well.

This means that plant roots can have access to sufficient water without the risk of drowning or dying from lack of oxygen.

Soil, because its texture varies so greatly, isn’t always suitable to use in pots.

Potting mixes can be specifically formulated for special purposes and situations.

This means you can

provide plants with the most suitable conditions for healthy growth.

Tips for re-potting Start by watering thor-

oughly. Invert the pot and carefully remove the plant. Don’t pull it by the stem. Sometimes it helps to roll the pot on its side and squeeze gently to loosen the roots.

In extreme cases it may be necessary to break the old pot or cut it away from the root ball. Remove some of the old potting mix and check the roots for damage or disease. Trim these back to a healthy section.

Re-pot into (preferably) a slightly larger pot. Firm into place but don’t press too hard or you’ll risk damag-ing the roots. Leave at least 2cm of space at the top of the mix for watering. Water thoroughly.

This settles the mix into

place and removes air pock-ets. A few weeks later, feed with a fertiliser that suits container plants.

Don’t use dry, granular fertilisers – such as rose food – because there’s too great a risk of burn-ing roots. Instead stick to controlled release or liquid plant foods.

Is potting mix danger-ous?

Like soil and organic mat-ter, potting mixes may carry any one of a range of benefi-cial or harmful bacteria.

To avoid problems it’s best to follow some simple precautions when handling any of these materials.

Keep potting mix moist, avoid breathing dust from potting mix, wear gloves and, most importantly, wash your hands with soap and water when you’ve finished potting, or working with soil or organic matter.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEAT PUMPS

If you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best

to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation.

Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy-efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9 kilowatt of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma) benefits no other heating appliance can offer.

Ducted and multi-systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climate-controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems.

Enviro Master Ltd is your air conditioning and heat pump specialist and has been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now.

Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin.

This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump.

Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

We currently have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.

outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not eff ective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

We breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air everyday. It is, therefore, very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets

the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffi ness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation. However, as winter approaches, we start to shut up houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.
