FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Concerns have been raised over the safety of disabled athletes travelling to and from Cowles Stadium, with plans for a probation facility to go in nearby.

Special Olympics Canterbury, which runs events and training for the intellectually or physi-cally disabled, says it is worried athletes may be at risk because they are “particularly vulner-able” to “those who we envis-age” using the Department of Corrections facility, should it get the go ahead.

The Te Runanga o Nga Maata Waka, who are guardians of the Nga Hau E Wha National Marae, have applied for resource consent to build a centre, which will be leased to Corrections. It will manage offenders on com-munity sentences, or on orders from the courts or the parole board, and employ 70 staff.

There was a Corrections facil-ity at 601 Pages Rd before the

earthquakes, but due to the dam-age it sustained, has been running its community correction ser-vices out of three locations spread across the east, including at the marae.

Special Olympics Canter-bury made a submission on the resource consent. Eight submis-sions were received with seven against the proposal.

A hearing is scheduled for March 21.

Special Olympics Canterbury chairman Jeff Waters said ensur-ing the safety of the local com-munity, especially those more vulnerable, should be made a top priority.

“A number of our athletes are relatively independent, cycling and catching the bus by them-selves and they would be par-ticularly vulnerable,” he said.

Mr Waters said the club was

not directly against the facility, but thought procedures should be put in place to limit the risk put to the community.

“Number one is for them to limit the times that their clients are coming and going . . . if they limited the times to daylight hours, that would be a good start,” he said.

City councillor Glenn Livingstone (left) said concern on the resource consent was low compared to others in the past.

“As far as risk goes, I understand there’s often a perception of risk, and they may be real, but we need to see any risks on any given day and night . . . the facility will be there to offer community development,” he said.

Patience Ngara had just started primary school in Zimbabwe when she was told by her mother her grandfather had died.

Like two others in her family, her grandfather had died from a preventable illness – “something that could be easily fixed in a normal check up, like a flu”.

It was, said Miss Ngara, a terrible way for her grandfa-ther, who used to dance and sing with her, to die.

But in the rural northern part of Zimbabwe the closest hospital was 50km away and there was a severe lack of health care – there was no chemist.

Now living in Edgeware, the Canterbury University law student hopes to make these tragedies a thing of the past.

She started up her own business venture, called Tendai. Its aim is to bring drug stores into rural areas of Zimbabwe, to prevent more people dying.

“Some people would have to walk up to 25km just to get a Panadol, which we can get from the supermarket. But it is a really easily solved problem,” she said.

She knows hospitals are running out of medication, and are sometimes located in inaccessible areas.

On a recent visit back to Zimbabwe, her uncle became ill.

“They were unable to treat my uncle. Things like that scare me,” she said.

“What I’m hoping for is to partner with an organisation that has drug stores in other ar-eas. So far the organisations are struggling, as there are none in Zimbabwe, only in other parts of Africa,” she said.

“We want to do a lot of fun-draising for the start-up. Once we have those funds we can really start,” she said.

Ms Ngara is asking the public to help realise her dream. If you can help, email [email protected]

Christchurch Youth Council treasurer Sofie Hampton says the Government’s mental health budget cuts in Canterbury are going to have a big impact on young people. Have you or someone you know experienced difficulty getting help post-earthquake? Send your thoughts to [email protected]

Just before the fifth anniversary of the February 2011 earthquake (and just days after the Valentine’s Day aftershock), the Canterbury District Health Board has announced it will be losing thousands of dollars towards its mental health services.

That has made thousands of people speak out – staff who are overworked and underpaid, young people who are terrified about what might happen and parents who are scared for their children.

Our region has one of the highest suicide rates in New Zealand, and suicide-related calls to the police have doubled since 2011. With huge percentages of our nation’s medication prescriptions coming from Christchurch

(17 per cent of New Zealand’s anti-depressants, 13 per cent of New Zealand’s sedatives and 16 per cent of New Zealand’s anti-psychotics), it’s really a no brainer that Canterbury needs desperate help in restoring its services and supporting people.

It’s been proven that five years on from a major disaster people still need mental health services more than a city that wasn’t affected.

Our young people are struggling, and these support services cannot cope with the number of patients needing to be seen.

Young people are dying because all they desperately want is someone who understands them and has time for

them. Emergency waiting lists are at least three weeks long, and waiting to be seen in the emergency department will take you about six hours.

How does this impact our young people? Do they feel like anyone cares? Do they feel like they will get through

this? I’m honestly terrified of what will happen to services which already desperately need more help.

Instead of doing the logical thing, the Government is deciding to give up on us.

I hope this is reviewed and that young people are given the best chance at life here in Christchurch.

MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICERIt has been quite a busy week in Christchurch but without too many notable incidents.

The warm weather certainly makes any vegetation fire more likely to burn and more likely to spread but, thankfully, such calls have been rare.

What is evident is that there are those in the city who completely ignore the fire ban and who light rubbish, skips and couches in a single-fingered salute to authorities.

There were also four instances of kitchen fires in houses. On three of these occasions the occupants had left the house with a pot still on the stove. The advice is obvious.

A worker in Highsted Rd suffered an unusual entrapment last Friday when

she reached into the road sign cavity on the back of the work truck and her arm became stuck.

St Albans fire crew called in their col-leagues on the rescue tender from city station who utilised the hydraulic spread-ers to open the steel sided cavity enough to free her. Injuries are unknown.

The staff member at the airport who was heating up a roast in a microwave last Tuesday evening probably ended up acutely embarrassed when overheating caused a smoke alarm to activate.

This in turn caused fire trucks from the airport crash team, Harewood, Sockburn and St Albans to respond. So the system worked.

It’s just that like the kitchen fires report-ed above, by staying with the cooking, a big inconvenience for everyone might have been avoided.

“Tilly” a 5 year old, Lhaso Apso mix presented to me one weekend for vomiting, restlessness, not eating, drinking lots and just appearing flat. Nothing specific could be identified, apart from her being over weight and having a fever. She lives with a wonderful elderly lady who showers Tilly with love and food – mostly she lives on our diet, with occasional dog roll. She did have a tense abdomen and we noticed on getting a urine sample she passed many small streams. My thoughts initially were either a gastric complaint or urinary tract infection. Her urine was dilute ( she was drinking copiously) and there was a lot of blood present. I discharged Tilly on antibiotics and tramal pain relief and had her return in 3 days for another check up and urine test.

The next time I saw Tilly she appeared more painful to the touch, grunting on abdominal palpation. She was eating better and hadn’t been sick but she didn’t look well to me. Her urine was still bloody and dilute so I recommended we radiograph her abdomen. I also ran blood tests to check all her organs (especially liver and kidney) were functioning normally.

Once the radiograph was done it was very easy to diagnose Tilly’s problem of pain, blood in the urine, listlessness and drinking copiously. As you can see, the bladder stone present was humungous. It’s hard to imagine any animal coping pretty well with the daily rituals of life having this huge thing rocking around inside you. On the radiograph you can also see how thickened the bladder wall has become supporting this huge mass. Very easy to now understand why we have blood in the urine and why she passes small urinations often. Basically her bladder can’t hold much urine as its “full up”.

Small bladder stones ( uroliths) can be medically managed and dissolved effectively with prescription diets once the composition of the stone is known. This stone requires urgent surgical removal which Tilly’s owners were in full agreeance with. I came in to operate on my day off as I didn’t want Tilly to suffer with this stone any longer. She is so stoic and really her owners haven’t noticed changes with her until recently.

The surgery went superbly. She was an absolute star under the anaesthetic and on recovery. Her pain was managed through medications placed into her intravenous fluids and antibiotics were a must. She was discharged later that night.

My suspicion is that the stone is comprised of “Calcium Oxalate”, due to its size, hardness, opacity and the fact these stones are over represented in Lhaso Apso’s. We have sent the stone off to the Hills Science Diet analysis centre in Missouri, USA to determine what it is. This information is essential in managing Tilly’s

diet accordingly in the long term so this doesn’t happen again.

I love these surgeries in particular as I know I can make a huge difference to Tilly’s quality and quantity of life. They can’t thank you verbally but they definitely do in many other

ways. Animals know we help them. I feel priviledged so often to be there to help and heal them.

FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Burwood resident Veronica Henry has lived next door to the now closed Burwood School for over 50 years and is now fighting the Government to prevent it being completely demolished.

Mrs Henry found out in November that the Ministry of Education planned to demolish the school in the first half of this year.

But she wants it to stay because there is a lack of com-munity facilities following the February 22, 2011 earthquake.

Burwood School was closed due the Government post-earthquake education shake-up. It combined with the former Windsor School to form the new Waitakiri School, which opened at its new site this year.

Mrs Henry has pleaded with the Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board to get the city council to “register an interest” in the

school. This means it could lobby the ministry to keep part of the school for the community.

The board agreed to refer the issues Mrs Henry raised to the city council, and for council staff to register an interest in keeping Burwood School for the com-munity.

Mrs Henry was alerted to the potential demolition of the site after seeing a copy of the let-ter sent to the school about its future, last year.

The letter, dated November 5, 2015, said the maintenance of Burwood School would be ar-ranged by independent property experts Darroch until a decision was made by the ministry on the

school’s future.“At this stage, unless another

use is identified for the site, the intention is to demolish the buildings on the site in the first half of 2016. The long term in-tention is likely to be disposal of the site under the Public Works Act,” the letter said.

The ministry told the Pegasus Post that demolition was one of the options, but it is inves-tigating other options includ-ing keeping some or all of the buildings.

Ministry head of the education infrastructure service Kim Shan-non said: “After a school closes, we often keep the site and build-ings to be used for educational purposes. This is the case with the site of Burwood School. We are not intending to remove the buildings in the near future,” she said.

Mrs Henry said the school could be used for many com-munity activities including a market.

Eastern suburb residents will be able to have their say on the possible sale of part of QE II Park to the Government.

Last week, the Pegasus Post reported that the proposed location for the QE II replacement facility sparked accessibility issues for the Travis Medical Centre and the controversial Eastern Sports and Recreation Centre.

The proposal to sell 11.5ha of land to the Ministry of Education is going out for public consultation tomorrow.

The MoE wants to purchase the land in the southeast corner of QE II Park for use in the relocation of Avonside Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ high schools.

The proposal if passed, would see both schools sit alongside the recreation centre, which will be situated to the north of the MoE space.

The recreation facility is scheduled to open in 2018.

City councillors unanimously agreed on Thursday that a special consultative procedure on the proposal to sell the land should get under way.

Public consultation runs from tomorrow until midnight on Sunday, April 3. Hearings are scheduled for May, with a final decision on the proposal to fol-low that.

The MoE will also assess the environmental impacts of the school development as part of its consenting process.

Ms Powis helped celebrate a rebuild milestone this week as the recipient of the notice. Ms Powis, 69, has lived in Parklands for 26 years, and experienced major SCIRT work outside her home for the past two months. She was pleased to hear the work would be completed early this week. Hi Amanda, thanks for talking to me. Tell me a bit about yourself.

I found that in my own life photography has helped me deal with and properly handle bullying and mental health issues. I completed a diploma of contemporary photography in 2013, and I wanted to share my passion and help teach young people that if they don’t click with sports or music, there are other opportunities out there. I also wanted to provide a programme for youth that explores positive belief in self-worth.

This your first business?I have my own kind of

self-employed business called ‘Photos by Amanda’, which I’m now starting to get up and running again. Once I start turning a profit in that I’ll start putting about 20 per cent into the content for Triple R Youth. Research has proved that for a positive change in a kid’s mind, they need ongoing help and support. So for this venture I plan to have a 10-week programme and ongoing support after that.

So how did you go about setting the venture up?

My first step was to contact the Ministry of Education, but that proved a road block, as there was no research backing up what I was saying, no proof

that it will be successful. Even if it’s a school holiday programme for a year I would have to prove it has been successful. It’s all about gaining credibility.

And do you have an idea in mind of how that will be run?

My first mini workshop will be held at the White Elephant Trust on March 12. It’ll be held at 442 Tuam St. It’s a free work-shop for the participants to help me build the content. The plan is to do it through the next six months, and to have youth input throughout. So far I have five people attending, but I’d always like to see more. There will be a photography activity, a place to hang out, listen to music, and have a pizza lunch. There will be a few activities about getting to know each other as well.

That sounds great! Is that all ready to go now?

I’ll need help in facilitating the workshop and the resources that I need that I don’t have the funds for. I guess I’m looking for a funding partner that has the same ideas about youth as me.

Has this idea come from personal experiences?

I was bullied in high school, from age 13 onwards, and I actually left due to being bullied. I didn’t really get into sports or music, but I really enjoyed taking photos. That makes me feel like there is a huge gap for a workshop like this. I’ve

put in some of my own money towards this venture because I believe in it.

Did others at the Live the Dream business accelerator feel the same?

My target age group is a bit younger than the others at Live the Dream. I’m aiming to help 12 to 15-year-olds, which is an age that is generally accepted to be before they have formed their own opinions about themselves.

Would you ever publish works of your own?

Yes, I would probably consid-er doing a book of my photos. I specialise in portrait art, which is anything like weddings, maternity, families, graduations – all sorts. My Facebook page, showcases some of the work I’ve done. Two of my photogra-phy sessions were exhibited in 2014. The first one was called self worth, and the second do-mestic violence. They were both exhibited in a group photography session in Matchbox Studios in Wel-lington, which is one of the main ones in Wellington.

And did they go down quite well with the audience? Receive any feedback?

I had a lot of feedback about how raw the exhibit was and how it made people think about my works. One person asked if I would sell my work, but those two particular series had me

in them, so I didn’t want to sell them off if they were just going to be hung up on a wall. If it was going towards a women’s refuge centre or something then possibly.

Has your partner helped you along the way?

I’ve had a bit of trouble in past relationships and he came in at the right time, right place. He deals really well with my condition, which is called fibromyalgia. It’s a condition that makes you feel like you have the flu 24/7, in constant pain. I was diagnosed in March last year. It’s not curable, it’s in the same group as arthritis. So

that has made my life hell for a while, but it’s about learning to manage that. He’ll help me out of bed if I’m sore or give me a massage and things like that, which is great.

Man that’s pretty horrible. Sorry to hear about that.

I just figure there’s always someone worse off. I’ve been struggling since I was 18, but wasn’t diagnosed until last year. At the time I was diagnosed, my friend and I were about to travel to the United States for nine weeks. The trip was already planned, but it was hard going through what type of medication would work and what wouldn’t while overseas.

Yeah, I can imagine. So have you done a lot of travel then?

Ah, I’ve been to Brisbane, where I’ve got heaps of family. I’ve also been to the US, Canada, and Hawaii.

If you had to pick one place to live, where would it be?

I’d still have to say New Zealand because of my condition – I can get help here. But if I lived in a dream it’d be Canada.

The designs for Haeata Community Campus have been released, but there are concerns there will not be enough playgrounds.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board member Tim Baker has raised concern that there will only be one playground at a school with an expected roll of 1200 year one to 13 students, with the capacity for 1800.

Mr Baker said the Ministry of Education will be burdening the board of trustees if they do not come through with another playground.

“If the ministry is stubborn enough to say no to two play-grounds, then the board of trust-ees would have to spend a lot of money that they wouldn’t have on things that should already be there,” he said.

Wainoni School, Aranui Primary School, Aranui High School and Avondale Primary School will be closed at the end of the year to make way for Haeata Community Campus, one of four super schools in a

$298 million contract the Min-istry of Education have with Future School Partners.

Haeata is currently being built on the site of Aranui High.

Mr Baker said unless there is a plan for separate play times, there needs to be more than one playground.

“It looks all right, but it’s still not good enough to have that one playground unless they plan

to have two separate play times, which wouldn’t be practical,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Min-istry of Education said there is “no specific plans” in place regarding playgrounds or play equipment at this stage.

Mr Baker said: “There should be one for the younger kids and one for the older kids. Second-ary school students wouldn’t really worry about playgrounds, they’d probably want obstacle courses and exercise courses.”

The school is scheduled to officially open its doors in time for the start of the next school-ing year.

Only five days after this stunning mural was put up on the side of New Brighton Fresh, it was hit with graffiti.

But within three hours, the city council’s graffiti team turned up to repair the damage (right).

The artwork was defaced on Thursday. The Pegasus Post has chosen to blur out the tag so the vandal does not get peer recognition.

New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen said council’s graffiti team keep “upping their game” which was good to see.

Mr Zaanen did not know the name of the artist who did

the mural, but it was done on February 20.

He said instances of graffiti were dropping in the area due to the community taking “ownership for their patch,” he said.

BEFORE: A tagger defaced this mural outside New Brighton Fresh.

GOOD OLD MUD: Eve from the New Brighton Scout Group was one of 400 Christchurch Scouts who recently gathered for an afternoon full of mud. Activities on the day included a giant mud slide, a battle field, a King of the Hill game, tug of war, mud bungee, mud pits, a slippery pole and a mud-filled obstacle course. The Scouts and their families were there for four hours, which ended up with a sausage sizzle and drinks being shared around. The Scouts gather every year for activities organised by the Scout zone.

GROUND BREAKING: The pupils at Linwood North were the first to break the ground last week for the school’s new hall. Staff and pupils gathered last Friday for the ceremony. The original hall at Linwood North was badly damaged during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and was demolished. Repairs to the school library building will take place during the construction of the replacement hall. Labour Party MP for eastern Christchurch Poto Williams was also in attendance on the day. The construction will run until October.

For spare parts that regularly need

replacing, they provide a wide selection of brake disc pads, brake shoes and brake seal kits, Century batteries, lighting switches, wiper blades, spark plugs, bulbs and tail and head lights. Bigger ticket items include CV and universal joints, wheel bearings, drive shafts and hanger bearings.

To make working on a car as easy as possible, the team at Stanmore Road Auto Spares also stock Powerbuilt tools, including jacks and ramps, and they are suppliers of Valvoline oils and products, Penrite oils and Aegis oil.

They can even help keep a car looking good, stocking paint and car cleaning products and accessories.

It’s not just mechanical systems they can help with. They have spare parts for electrical systems and stock audio CD players, speakers, amps and leads.

In fact, they have, or can find, almost everything needed to keep a car running safely and efficiently. Open seven days a week with plenty of free parking at the rear, find them at 245 Stanmore Rd or call 03 389 4555.

Queenspark School remembered the fifth anniversary of the February 22, 2011, earthquake by having a ‘river of flowers’ on a path.

Each family was asked to bring a flower to the school and place it along a school path, along with a personal note or memory.

A spokesperson for the school said it was a moving day for the pupils, because they could express how their fami-lies felt about the earthquakes.

The North Beach Beavers had won the New Zealand Surf Boat Series before they had a chance to get into their speedos for the final day.

Because they had already won the first three events, the Beavers are uncatchable for the final event, to be held at Piha Beach, Auckland.

The previous three were held in Lyall Bay, Whangamata and Waihi

respectively.The team led the open

men’s division with 60 points after the first three rounds. The first three events of the four count towards the final point scores.

This means they are uncatchable on the final day, and meant they had already won the open men’s division.

Beavers member Rob McCaig said he was

‘stoked’ to learn the team had won.

“This is the second biggest surf boat event to the nationals. We won three of the four surf boats event for the 2015/16 season so therefore are the New Zealand Surf Boat Series champions too,” he said.

The team will fly to Piha on Thursday, March 17, and the final races will take place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

BIG WIN: The North Beach Beavers won the New Zealand Surf Boat series before the final day.

GOLDEN FEELING: Shirley Boys’ High student Ryan Fraser with his gold medal and International Ice Hockey Federation Trophy, won with the New Zealand under-18 team in South Africa recently. Fraser, a defensive player, was one of eight players selected from Canterbury with others from Queenstown, Alexandra, Dunedin, Auckland as well as two Canadian ex-pats making up the team of 20. The tournament consisted of teams from New Zealand, Hong Kong and South Africa, with the Kiwis playing Hong Kong and South Africa twice each. They were undefeated in their four games played, had only nine goals scored against them and netted 30 themselves. From their win, New Zealand has now been promoted to the top division for their age group, where they will play teams from Bulgaria, Mexico, Australia, Israel, Turkey and Taipei next year.

Canterbury’s most exciting tertiary option is coming

In a world where the only constant is change, sometimes you need to do a bit of

metamorphosising of your own. Right now, CPIT and Aoraki are doing just that. Rather than being spread across two very good organisations, the

best of both have come together to form one great one. One that’s smarter, more streamlined and with

a broader, more relevant offering to today’s job market. And tomorrow’s. Further exciting

developments will be released soon. In the meantime, study information is

The Avonside Girls’ High School dragon boating team are able to take their squad of 26 members to Adelaide for the world championships, thanks to a large grant.

The team recently won Jetstar’s Flying Start grant, meaning the team has gained $15,000 for flights, and an-other $15,000 cash.

The team are the current na-tional champions and now has the boost needed to take them to the world stage.

AGHS dragon boating coach Evan Roper said the

26-girl team will now be able to compete at the world championships, and have been inspiring to a communi-ty that has suffered for quite some time.

“The girls have been fun-draising any way they can, but, because our community has been so hard-hit money has been hard to come by, so the grant is a very welcome boost,” he said.

The team will travel later in the month to Adelaide for the competition which will run from April 1 to 7.

WINNERS: The Avonside Girls’ High School dragon boating team with Jetstar cabin crew Sapphire Twyman and Stunzer Taiulu. Head of New Zealand Jetstar Grant Kerr stands in the middle.

Flying start to dragon boat world champs

Chisnallwood Intermediate cricketer Harry Webely was given a pair of top-order Aus-tralian batsman David Warner’s gloves to keep last Monday.

Harry and the rest of Chisnallwood’s cricket team were treated by Christchurch Metro Cricket Association to a free trip to the third day of the second five day test match between the Blackcaps and Austra-lia.

The young team took full advantage of the cricket, the weather, and the day off school, getting there early enough to see the Australians warming up in the batting nets.

They met some key Australian players, including batting partners Warner and Us-man Khawaja.

The boys watched the game, played some backyard cricket and saw the Blackcaps fight back to bowl out Australia.

The Coastal Spirit men’s premier team welcomed their new coach to the sidelines when they cruised to victory in successive weeks against Nomads and Selwyn.

The team got their pre-season off to the best start with an 8-0 thrashing of divi-sion two side Nomads, before travelling to Foster Park to see off Selwyn 6-2 last Saturday.

First team coach Ekow Quainoo was named as the new coach at the end of last season, and led the side to victory in his first games in charge.

Being a former Rangers and then Coastal player himself, Quainoo said he

was thankful he had already earned the respect of the players.

“I think I’m lucky because I already had the players’ respect being a past player myself. I’ve played at the club for years – being a Rangers player at 12-years-old. I’m really looking forward to the season,” he said.

Coastal will travel to Dunedin this weekend to take on Caversham AFC and Green Island FC the week after.

Their season will kick off on March 19 against Universities at Avonhead Park. Registrations for the club are still open – for more information, go to their website: coastalspirit.co.nz

Strengthen your Spine, avoid back pain

Whether it’s from gardening, lifting something heavy, or twisting awkwardly, most of us will experience low back

pain during our lifetime and it can certainly slow us down.

An exciting and effective way of resolving and preventing low back or neck pain is Dynamic Spines, a programme run by Muscle People in Christchurch City and Bishopdale. As physiotherapist and director of Muscle People, Laurie Moore, explains: “Spinal strength and stability is the focus of the programme, concentrating on the deep core muscles in the trunk.”

The programme is designed to move you beyond pain to a place where you feel confident about taking part in dynamic activities, and significantly reduce recurrence of back pain, she says.

Led by physiotherapists, the weekly exercise programme is conducted for small groups, with core stability and spinal muscle control being addressed. Participants experience clear progression each week, which will cross over to their everyday life.

“More than 80 per cent of New Zealanders suffer from a significant episode of low back pain during their life,” Laurie says. “Of these, 84 per cent are likely to have a recurrence of back pain within a year. Research shows

that those that undergo a specific spinal strengthening programme are almost three times better off.”

The benefits of completing the Dynamic Spines programme:

A Muscle People client who has completed the Dynamic Spines programmes, Julie, says: “The course has been life-changing. I suffered from severe neck pain and was fearful of any movement. This programme has strengthened up my neck muscles, making me feel confident and like a new woman.”

Another participant, Tor, says: After partaking in the Dynamic Spines group exercise programme I definitely feel stronger all over – thigh muscles, arms, general increased stamina. This has helped with my gardening work, with less lower back niggles.”

Before you join the Dynamic Spines programme, a physiotherapist will assess your individual needs. The programme is then split into two levels. Laurie explains:

“The first level is all about learning to locate and then strengthen the appropriate muscles. The physiotherapists will help each person to achieve this based on their individual diagnosis and ability.

“The second level focuses on turning those learned skills into habitual movements and improving strength. Home exercises are also an integral part of the programme.

The Dynamic Spines programme is designed for men and women of all ages and fitness levels, who have back or neck pain, or with core or postural weakness.

For more information phone Muscle People at their city clinic (03) 961 0236 or in Bishopdale on (03) 360 3606, or visit musclepeople.co.nz.

You shouldn’t miss this - nor would I 83 Norwood St, BeckenhamAuction: February 18, 20164 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 living room | 1 dining room | 2-car garage | 2 off-street parks | Listing #: BE192516

An opportunity to buy a unique property in Norwood St. Designed with flair and to fit with the Beckenham community, this is a

brand-new home just waiting for a new family to move in.

Finished to a high standard with a large open plan living/dining/kitchen area leading on to a sunny patio for the family and friends’ barbecues this summer. Upstairs there are four roomy bedrooms, the master having a well-appointed en suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. The main bathroom is spacious, designed with family in mind. All bedrooms enjoy sun and views across the city. A good-sized double garage will safely store your cars for you, and there is room for off-street parking as well.

Ideally located close to the Beckenham shops, walking distance to local primary schools and the bus routes, you may indeed not need to take your car out of the garage at all! The Port Hills with the abundance of walking and cycling tracks is only a short distance away, and the Beckenham Library just around the corner. Don’t hesitate, don’t delay brand-new homes in the Beckenham Loop are rare indeed.

Open Homes: Saturday and Sunday, 2.45pm to 3.30pm. To arrange a private viewing of this property call, Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) now on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.
