Our Peer Mediation Journey
Mid Calder Primary SchoolWest Lothian
Why Peer Mediation?Miss Burton wanted to help the Primary 7 pupils carry out their Playground Duties.
In 2015 Primary 7 took on Responsible Roles:- Safe Security- Playful Pals- Magical Mediators
Each group had training the term before they started P7 and the Magical Mediators had a 2 day training programme from Carol Hope with St. Ninian’s Primary School.
Peer Mediation Training
The ProcessWe use assembly time to share information about our service with the
school.
We have a rota so when know who is on duty in which playground.
We have our own designated room for Peer Mediation so the meeting can be confidential.
If pupils are having a dispute in the playground they ask a Magical Mediator for help. Also Pupil Support Workers can recommend they speak to us
We keep a record of who uses the service but we do not sure this with anyone.
We have regular check-ins with Miss Burton.
5 Step Mediation Process• Step 1: Welcome and Introduction to Ground Rules.
• Step 2: Getting the story.
• Step 3: finding out a bit more.
• Step 4: Exploring options.
• Step 5: Reaching Agreement or not.
TrainingWe had to fill out an application form. When we were in P6 the Primary 7 Magical Mediators put together a training programme for us.
They showed us a video of a peer mediation taking place. They taught us the steps involved in a mediation. We also played some community builders together. They gave us tips on how to be an effective Peer Mediator.
ImpactPupils can solve their own problems without the help of adults.
We have fewer reports of bullying in the playground. It has developed our leadership and communication skills.
We can use mediation skills in our everyday life.
What next? We want to improve our Peer Mediation room by making posters.
We are going to help other schools in our cluster start Peer Mediation in their schools.
We will train the P6s in May.
Thank you for listening
