November 27, 2012 Regular Meeting of the Board:nf 18. Public Question Period

Michelle Large referred to a CBC website report that a local public school board has passed a motion to join school boards in seeking a review or reversal of Bill 115. She asked whether Peel DSB trustees have made a similar motion regarding Bill 115, and the reasons if a motion has not yet been passed. Michelle Large requested that the Board pass a motion, and she reported that the Simcoe County DSB is expected to vote on a similar motion tomorrow. Vice-Chair Nurse responded. John Richmond, from Mississauga Secondary School, expressed his disappointment with the Board’s decision to have security guards at his school and other secondary schools. He stated that students do not understand the need, and are asking questions about the presence of security guards. He commented that this will cost the Board approximately $25,000 to $30,000 per month, which could have been directed to providing 100 to 200 computer devices for schools, or equipping two new computer labs per month. He stated that students are aware that the teachers have been fully engaged with students. He requested that the Board consider reversing the decision to bring security guards to secondary schools. Vice-Chair Nurse, Director of Education, Tony Pontes, and Scott Moreash, Coordinating Superintendent responded. Lesley Utting-Polchak from Turner Fenton Secondary School stated that students at her school had also asked similar questions about the security guards and teachers have provided clarification. She asked about the possibility of security guards having identification other than security uniforms, stating that this will help to ease students’ concerns. She remarked that students have negative perceptions about uniforms. Scott Moreash responded.
