Caribou Math Competition

The Math competition season has started at Dolphin!

The first event in the series of Caribou Math online competitions (with 153 participants in our school) showed some great results. We are getting ready for the next competition on November 18th, 2015. Congratulations to: Ryan M. in grade 6 - 7th place in the world Linda Z. in grade 7 - 4th place in the world Jeffrey L. in grade 8 - 12th place in the world All the math competitions at Dolphin are open to the entire school population.

Terry Fox Run

The Terry Fox Run will be held during the morning of Friday November 20th.

As per Dolphin tradition, stu-dents are encouraged to do-nate a Toonie for Terry in sup-port of Cancer Reseach. This year, however, students will be able to put their donations to work by using their Toonie to place a vote for a teacher they think will win our first annual Terry Fox Tricycle Race!

During periods 1 and 2 on the day of the run, students will have the opportunity to watch their teach-ers compete in a tricycle racing tournament. Additional-ly, raffle tickets will be sold prior for to the run offering students the opportunity to pie a teacher in the face! Dolphin is looking forward to a fun and exciting event - so get your toonies in and let's help continue Terry's fight to find a cure for Cancer!

House League Flag Football Tournament:

Congratulations to all stu-dents that participated in Dolphin's annual House League Flag Football Tourna-ment. The final game was a match-up between two teams that took very differ-ent paths to get to the Championship. House Bar-racuda stormed it's way through the round-robin and playoffs, winning 4 straight games. House Mar-lin, on the other hand, fin-

ished the round-robin 4th out of the tournament’s 5 teams and narrowly survived a playoff play-in game just to advance to the semi-finals. The Cham-pionship was an offensive nail-biter that saw huge catches and back and forth touchdowns. In the end, House Barracuda came up just short, missing a touchdown opportunity on the game's final play, which secured the Championship and 1000 points for House Marlin.

Mr. Manzon would like to thank all players and spectators for their ex-cellent behavior throughout the tour-nament!

Intramural Flag Football Results:

Congratulations to the following Intramural Flag Football Champions:

Tuesday Division: The Brampton Broncos

Thursday Division: The Oompah Loompahs

Friday Division: The Shark Catchers

The Dolphin Library Learning Commons

Library LC is off to a great start with lots of books in circulation and more to join the shelves in a few weeks! Our library boasts a large collection of children’s fiction, graphic novels and picture books, non-fiction materials and teacher re-sources, all housed under the beautiful canopy of our forest-themed mural. This year we are adding a large selection of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit material with a particular focus on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the recom-mendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We are also creating a reading nook where students can relax and enjoy a book or a magazine, a Reading Wall where students can share their reading experiences, and a Visual Resources database for teachers. The Library LC continues to be a very busy place, so come and join in on the action and help us cele-brate literacy! If there are any parents or volunteers interested in helping out in the Library Learning Commons, please feel free to con-tact Mr. Steeves at 905-826-4247, or by e-mail at [email protected]. Novel Ideas – The Importance of Daily Reading

“My proper education consisted of the liberty to read whatever I cared to. I read indiscriminately and all the time, with my eyes hanging out...” - Dylan Thomas

At Dolphin, we encourage our students to develop a lifelong love of books and reading. Not only is it a desirable way to spend leisure time, it is in fact a vital part of academic success. Numerous international studies have found that the single

most important predictor of academic success is the amount of time students spend reading books. At Dolphin, many teachers offer dedicated times for independent reading, often occurring

during home room periods in the morning, or during class time. As parents, your support to encourage reading for pleas-ure at home in the evenings and on weekends can help your child benefit from the many dividends a lifelong love of read-ing can bring. As Dr. Seuss, who summed it up best, wrote in his book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

WINTER CONCERT

Dolphin's Musicians are working hard to prepare for the upcoming Winter Concert which will take place Wednes-day, December 9, 2015 at 7p.m. in the gym. We look forward to seeing many parents, family and friends in the audience!

Performers will receive an information letter at the end of November to outline the procedures for the event, these letters will include details for final rehearsals and performance attire. We will have a second concert presentation to Dolphin students and staff during the regular school hours of Thursday, December 10. If your child is a member of a Dolphin band or choir and cannot attend one of these concert performances, please ad-vise Mrs. Hynds or Mrs. Suidan with a note or phone message before the end of November.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC - Time to Practice!

Students who are learning to play an instrument here at Dolphin need to practice at home in order to build their muscle strength, endurance and overall skill as a musi-cian! It is recommended that students practice a mini-mum of one hour per week, divided into three sessions of twenty minutes each. Those students who make the commitment to a regular at-home practice routine will notice remarkable im-provement in his/her overall musicianship and ability to keep up with the class!

Practice Tips:

1. Choose a rehearsal space that is away from distrac-tions. Computers, television, smartphones and siblings can have a very negative impact on your focus!

2. Begin with long, slow whole notes. Focus on getting a strong, full and rich sound out of your instrument.

3. Play a scale! If you are a beginner and don't know a full scale yet, start on your lowest note and move step by step until you reach your highest note. Make sure you adjust your wind speed and tighten your embou-chure to hit the high notes clearly! Your high notes should sound just as clear and strong as your low notes.

4. Practice the songs from the method book that your class was assigned for homework.

5. If you are in band, practice your band songs! Make sure you practice the hard sections slowly - don't just skim over them and hope nobody realizes there are mis-takes! Go slow, figure out the tricky parts, and then you can increase your speed.

6. Use a pencil to write note names, accidental remind-ers, or tricky counting passages if you need to!

7. Always finish your rehearsal by going through a piece that is fun for you to play, and that makes you sound great! This will boost your confidence and help to keep you motivated for the next practice session.

8. If you are struggling, ask for help! Check the remedi-al schedule posted on Mrs. Suidan's door. Find a friend who can come in with you to practice, it is so much more fun to make music with a buddy!

Choose Action on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Nov. 16 to 22, 2015. This year, we ask the Peel community to #ChooseAction to Change the World. The Peel board would like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the promis-es and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you take a moment to share your #ChooseAction moments on social media. Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the programs vary, their mes-sages are consistent. Students are taught to: define bullying identify forms of bullying identify the shifting roles in bullying relationships,

for example the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or the trusted advocate

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2012. For more information, visit: www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/ or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html.

With blood, sweat and tears they trained everyday With little time to rest and no chance to play They trained not for sport nor concert or show Rather they trained for what most would not know One by one, they were sent on a flight And came out of camps repurposed to fight All ran to defend and all gave up all, and more It’s a bizarre concept – I know, it’s war You’d think that humanity would have violence outlawed But in a turn of events two sides were called Opposing leaders sent their armed forces With people, vehicles, cannons and horses The many lines of people who ran to the front Were the same who trained and felt the brunt Though both sides were human, they prepared for gore It’s a bizarre concept – I know, it’s war The men took their positions – behind trenches and walls Then both armies prepared for their commander’s calls They soon started firing, throwing death at each other Their only goal at this point being to battle and smother They kept blasting their cannons and driving their tanks Whilst people kept falling at frontlines and flanks It suddenly ended with far too much death An unfortunate many took their last breath But the survivors who sacrificed much of their health Had to wake up the next day to attack with more stealth And this saddening cycle of losing lives Repeated everyday with whoever survives With every new week, killing was more of a chore It’s a bizarre concept – I know, it’s war Every new battle brought new engineered terror But every new battle had the same underlying error Not only were there machines made just to kill But their insane production saw resources to fill Just to fight others, all materials were spent In the bigger picture, metal was barely a dent For the governments of fighting nations had to pay To spend their economies on innovation made to slay The result was that citizens who really had no part Suffered even more while already falling apart

Distraction of war made other dangers spark Famines, outbreaks and shortages as a mark With mass atrocities against civilians of peace Everyone was unsafe from violence increase All the while, strong conflict continued to pour It’s a bizarre concept – I know, it’s war When the long fights ended after several years, The remaining survivors returned with much tears They ran straight to their family, friends and peers Citizens of all places celebrated peace with cheers Amidst all the happiness was the sad fact of the brawl That so many that went did not come back at all Survivors were traumatized for the rest of their life Many more disabled despite going under the knife But fights will not stop, there will always be more It’s a bizarre concept – I know, it’s war All of us now feel that all wars were long ago Faraway events for those peace does not know But this is false ignorance, a simplification covered in grime Realize that without our defenders, there’d be war all the time The games we find fun are ones where you fight In movies we watch, even the good gladly smite The gun games we play, the action movies we follow Won’t give the merciless feeling, of being so hollow There is no way that one, from the comfort of their home Can recreate the real horrors felt on the frontlines they roam It is definitely not easy, to defend your whole land With the people inside relying on you to make a stand The peace, security and freedom that we have today Are thanks to those who defended all the way We honour the soldiers who fought in war; The ones who gave their all and came out very sore For the millions of Canadians who are still in the army We hope for the best and wish much rest And though we may now relax in peace We must re-member those who made danger cease.

A Bizarre Concept In honour of those who died for us

Social Change - Wali Shah

In October, Dolphin had the pleasure to hear inspi-rational speaker and advocate for social change Wali Shah. Wali is a Peel graduate from Cawthra Secondary School that shared his journey with stu-dents from a troubled time in his life to changing his circumstances through hard work and his gift of spoken word and rap. He spoke about the power of his mentor, his social science high school teach-er, that helped him navigate to where he is today using his messages for positive change. Dolphin students thoroughly enjoyed listening to his story that provoked much positive discussion among our students.

The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months.

Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.

Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening.

Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.

Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.

Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus.

Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus.

Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult.

Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is. Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.
