wELCOME TO PECOS, TEXAS! Forthose new to Pecos, you might havemissed some things. For one, Pecoswas the birthplace of the rodeo in

1883, and the tradition is celebrated annually in the summerwith the West of the Pecos Rodeo at Buck Jackson Arena.

The story of how the rodeo got its start is pretty simple. Pecosstood at the junction of several cattle drive and wagon trails. TheGoodnight-Loving, Butterfield, and Chisholm Trails passedthrough Pecos, all because of the availability of easy naturalcrossing points on the Pecos River. After 1881, the rail road alsopassed through here. With so much traffic regularly coming

through Pecos, it was only natural for the many cowboys on traildrives to demonstrate their skills and try to be the best at whatthey did. Bragging rights for being the best led to directcompetition, and thus was born the rodeo, right here in Pecos.Learn more on page 30.

One of the main attractions here is the West of the PecosMuseum. It occupies two historic buildings, the Johnson-HeardSaloon and the Orient Hotel built respectively in 1896 and1904. The saloon boasts a talking bartender and the twobuildings house more than 50 rooms displaying scenes of life inthe 1800s. Learn more on page 12. Also, drop by the MemoryLane Antique Car Museum for a step back in time.

The weather in this region is sopredictable that the military chose it for itsPecos Army Air Field because the areaaveraged 360 days per year that flying waspossible. No other site offered such wideflexibility, weather-wise. It was thelocation of the country's largest bombertraining center during World War IIbecause of the weather and the flat

Welcome to Pecos, Texas a growing town that has made

its way on the map!

Historically we are proud to be Home of the World’s

first Rodeo and are world famous for our Pecos Sweet

Cantaloupes. While these things continue to be an

important part of Pecos, our community has more to

offer.

In 2014 our Pecos Area Chamber of Commerce took

all the things that make our town unique and introduced

our new branding that represents our history as well as

our present and future.

In our branding the imbedded spur and rowel not only

stand for our history but a sun, a sign of promise, of

hope, cooperation and growth.

Whether your stay in our community is long or short

my wish is that you leave having experienced these things

during your stay.

As a tourist you will find great information on Pecos

and our surrounding area at the Chamber as well as

experience a bit of Pecos hospitality with the helpful staff.

Along with promoting our town, the Chamber and its

committees host several events throughout the year

including our Annual Chamber Banquet, West of the

Pecos Rodeo, Night In Old Pecos/Cantaloupe Festival

and Fall Fair.

Executive Director Lupe Davis and her staff work

diligently to promote local business growth, serve the

community and network with many organizations and

civic groups for a better Pecos. Our organization consists

of 151 members and is led by our board of directors.

The board meets monthly to compose policies and

programs to increase business and community

opportunities for positive progress for Pecos. Learn how

Texas and barbecue have a long and satisfying

relationship. And anyone who knows barbecue

knows some of the best is found in Pecos. If

you’re visiting West Texas from another state - or

country - make a stop in Pecos for the Mexican

food - and the barbecue.

Try smoked ribs, beef brisket with spicy BBQ

sauce, green chile–cheddar pozole and all the

fixings at Pody’s BBQ (1330 S. Cedar, 432-448-

4635. Open Tue–Sat 11–9) or drop by the Old

Mill BBQ (1380 S. Eddy, 432-447-6106. Open

Mon-Fri 6:30am-8pm, Sat 7-2) where you can

order the Brisket and Hotlink plate or St. Louis

Ribs.

Don’t leave West Texas without a taste for true

Texas BBQ.

The Pecos Cantaloupe is famous nationwide

for its unique and delicious flavor imparted by the

potassium rich soil and abundant sunshine in the

area. First grown in 1917, the melons were sold to

dining cars of the Texas & Pacific Railway and

promoted as “Pecos” cantaloupes gaining a loyal

following among the satisfied diners on the train.

Find your own Pecos cantaloupe in the summer

months at roadside stands and Texas grocery

stores. Also, join the fun at the Little Miss

Cantaloupe Pageant each June and the

Cantaloupe Fly-in each August. See page 17 for

more information.

Tex-Mex Food in Pecos

MEXICAN FOOD SEASONED WITHHERITAGE

Tex-Mex food is a wonderful traditiondating back to the Spanish occupationof the southern United States. In thiscuisine, with a character all its own, youget the blending of influences from OldMexico and the Tejano heritage ofNative Americans, who adapted theirlifestyles to the Spanish. Today's Tex-Mex food is a marvelous combination offlavors and menu items that represent atrue regional cuisine like no other.

Predominant seasonings that lendtheir strengths to Tex-Mex food includechili powder, garlic, and cumin. Theirtypically abundant use gives this food adistinct difference from moststraightforward Mexican cuisine. Assuch, Tex-Mex is a treat found nowhereelse. And some of the best Tex-Mexfood that will ever grace your palate canbe found in Pecos, Texas. Of the manyreasons to prioritize a stop in Pecos, thefood is probably number one. Localresidents know a good thing when theysee it — or in this case, taste it.

If you have never eaten a chilerelleno, you have no idea what you aremissing. This is a mild poblano pepperstuffed with a delicious cheese and

meat mixture, and then coated in an eggbatter and deep fried. It is unforgettable.

Trademark dishes in this cuisineinclude fajitas and the ever-popular chilicon carne. Generous measures ofcheese are coupled with beef and beansfor true Tex-Mex flavor distinct frompurely Mexican traditions. Be sure tolook for any of a variety of enchiladas inred sauce with sour cream andguacamole.

Not that you can't get great Tex-Mexfood elsewhere, but Pecos just might bethe heart and soul of the region when itcomes to this food. More than a dozenfine restaurants in Pecos offer some ofthe best Tex-Mex food you will ever find.

History of Pecos

Pecos, Texas, originally located on thebanks of the Pecos River gained its namefrom this famous meandering water course.Pecos is a Native-American word meaning“crooked”. The regions prehistoric history is evident

in pictographs and in the Jumano peoplewho irrigated crops from San SolomonSpring near Balmorhea. Three Jumano’s metthe expedition of Antonio de Espejo nearToyah Lake in 1583 and Espejo’s diary notesthese people lived along the Pecos River.Settlers of Mexican descent farmed fromearly times this same area irrigating fromsurface water. Anglo farmers arrived in 1871and the availability of several river fordswithin 30 miles made this a strategic locationfor commerce and a crossroads for cattle andwagon trains. The Texas and Pacific Railroad arrived in

1881 linking Pecos with El Paso to the Westand Fort Worth to the East and allowedsettlement and further development of the

ranching industry andagriculture in the fertilePecos River valley. Thesweet Pecos cantaloupewas introduced andgained worldwide fameand is still grown in theregion.Pecos has been sustained through the years

because of the railroad, its strategic locationon Interstate Highway 20, agriculture and oiland gas exploration. And as home of theWorld’s First Rodeo, Pecos draws the toprodeo performers and fans each summer forthe West of the Pecos Rodeo.

The history of Pecos is closely linked tothe Pecos River. Early inhabitants foundboth a steady water supply and severaleasy crossing points in this area. The riverspans 700 miles from the Sangre de Cristomountains northeast of Santa Fe, NewMexico to its ending at the Rio GrandeRivers near Langtry, Texas.

Early travelers to the area describedthe river as having a fast current and beingfrom 60 to 100 feet wide and seven to tenfeet deep. This made crossing the riverdifficult except in a few places. Today, while flooding still occurs (most recently in2014) dams and other diversions havediminished its regular flow considerably.

According to the legend, Pecos Billwas born in Texas in the 1830s. Pecos Billwas traveling in a covered wagon as aninfant when he fell out unnoticed by therest of his family near the Pecos River(thus his nickname). He was taken in andraised by a pack of coyotes. Years later hewas found by his real brother, whomanaged to convince him he was not acoyote. Pecos Bill taught gophers to digholes for fence posts, rode mountain lionsand cyclones and roped huge herds withhis lariat - which was a snake. He marriedSlewfoot Sue and lived happily ever after.

The date was 1883 -- July 4, to be exact. Itwas on that date in the small West Texastown of Pecos that a "top cowboy" wasnamed in local competition and a rodeotradition was born. Pecos was the trade center of the area's

cattle empire at the time, the place wherecowboys congregated on payday to spendtheir time and their cash and to brag a little,or a lot, about their exploits and their skills. The first rodeo may have been an informaltest of skills, a good-natured local contest topick the top ropers and riders from the hugeand competitive area ranches. But, there wascash money posted for the winners -- $25 fortop spot, and a $15 second prize -- andbarbecue was to be provided for spectatorsand contestants alike. That first rodeo drew quite a crowd,

approximately 1,000 people. And the topcowboy turned out to be Morgan Livingstonof the NA Ranch, with Trav Windham of theLazy Y taking home the second prize. HenrySlack, who may have been the youngestparticipant, noted that it wasn't a "wild andwooly" contest, but that it was conducted ina "quiet and orderly manner." Slack gave up

the cowboy life for business, but remained anavid supporter of the rodeo, and either led orrode in local rodeo parades when they wereinstituted in the 1930s. He died in 1944.The rodeo tradition continues to this day:

The West of the Pecos Rodeo has grown intoa four day event, including bull riding, saddlebronc riding, steer wrestling and tie downroping, along with family-oriented events likethe children's boot scramble and wild cowmilking. The celebration, now held in June, also includes a traditional parade and an OldTimers Reunion. The times may have changed, and Pecos

may not be the cattle drive capital of theWest any longer, but the tradition continues. And, if anyone should dispute the Pecosclaim of being the birthplace of the rodeo, local residents simply point to authentication

by Encyclopedia Britannica in response todocumentation provided by the localnewspaper. Pecos is named as the host of "thefirst public cowboy contest wherein prizeswere awarded to the winners of bronco ridingand steer roping." Today, the rodeo is a non-profit, board

directed organization that aims to preservethis annual event for years to come. Plan toattend on June 24-27, 2015. Learn more atPecosRodeo.com.
