Letter from the DirectorIn 2011, the Lynden Chamber of Commerce will

be challenging Chamber members, their team members, and the community to focus on health. Not only each individual’s physical health, but mentally, financially and as a business. A vibrant and healthy community is dependent on the health of the businesses and people within. As the Chamber, we will applaud and honor the exceptional while encouraging, assisting, and lifting up the challenged.

As Executive Director of the Lynden Chamber of Commerce, I am blessed to interact with business owners that selflessly give of their time and treasure as a way to maintain and improve this corner of the Great Northwest many call home, and look forward to helping our members move the community forward.

It is not by accident that in the pages you are about to peruse, the best businesses in the Lynden area have chosen to offer their services. This community directory, like so much of what is accomplished in Lynden, is not done without the participation of these and other Lynden Chamber of Commerce members. It is the love of community that these businesses demonstrate daily that is so challenging to demonstrate within the pages of this fine publication.

Leuckels find the good life on Lynden linksby Mark Reimers of The Lynden Tribune

Move from the Midwest prompted by jobNot everyone in Lynden grew up here . Some

came and stayed here by choice .Sitting in his kitchen overlooking the Lynden

Homestead Golf Course with his wife Joyce, Dave Leuckel remembers planning a career as a mortician as a young man . But when his employer in Van Buren, Mo ., didn’t agree to his buyout offer, he turned to selling insurance for the Mutual of Omaha company .

It was a good career and a good company to work for .

Thirty years later, in 1994, while working in the Seattle area for the same company, Leuckel was offered a buyout during a time of downsizing .

He decided to take the opportunity to retire .Living at the time on Mercer Island, Dave kept

up the home while Joyce continued to work .Then, while traveling home from skiing at

Whistler in British Columbia in 1999, Dave and Joyce decided to take a detour through Lynden . Dave had been looking for a home that was close to a golf course, since that was where he liked to spend his free time once the household chores were complete .

Not only did they eventually find their house on the Lynden links, but the Leuckels discovered a town they could fall in love with .

“The Lynden community is friendly and warm,” Dave said . “I haven’t met anyone yet who I didn’t like .”

The Leuckels, both in their 70s, have enjoyed getting to know their neighbors on the Homestead seventh hole, some of whom are also retirees . Joyce has found ample opportunities to connect with the community through ongoing volunteer work .

In addition, they appreciate the closeness of all the things they need and value .

Even though Dave hasn’t skied in two years, the couple has spent many days on the ski slopes of many a mountain, and Lynden is closer to Whistler than Seattle .

And the move north hasn’t slowed Dave’s faithful attendance at Seattle Seahawks’ games at Qwest Field .

So avid a football fan is Dave that he was able to win several tickets to the 2006 Super Bowl during the Seahawks’ playoff run that season .

Add safe and sane drivers, honest people and close proximity to a quality hospital, and the Leuckels have all the reasons they need to keep living in Lynden .

One recent scare helped the couple appreciate their life here all the more . Dave experienced a stroke while on the course . Thankfully, those around him figured out he was in trouble very quickly and an ambulance was able to drive him straight from the fairway to PeaceHealth St . Joseph Medical Center . The quality of local healthcare is important in terms of Dave’s ongoing battle with heart problems .

But he’s staying on the golf course, too . In fact, Dave’s love of the links might be the biggest reason for their continued Lynden living . Since he professes to playing at least 200 rounds of golf per year, he’s getting his money’s worth out of his membership in the local club .

Lynden operates with a mayor-council form of government . The part-time mayor (Scott Korthuis since 2010) is assisted by a full-time city administrator (Bill Verwolf since October 2001) and professionals who head the city’s public works, parks, planning, finance, police, and fire departments .

The City Council’s seven members receive compensation on a per-meeting basis . The mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms in odd-numbered years .

Lynden recently increased emphasis on maintenance of its major arterials . Construction projects are planned for 2011 and the next several years . Plans for Lynden’s future development are also being reviewed and updated continually .

The Lynden School District had a total enrollment of approximately 2,622 full-time equivalent students at the start of the 2010-2011 school year . The district has 159 classroom teachers at five schools: Lynden High School (grades 9-12), Lynden Middle School (grades 6-8), Vossbeck Elementary School (K-5),Isom Elementary School (K-5), and Fisher Elementary School (K-5) .

Local actors thrill theatergoers year-round with musicals, comedies, and dramas . The Lynden Performing Arts Guild typically presents four productions each year at the Claire vg Thomas Theatre, located in the Dutch Village mall and named after a renowned pianist and longtime supporter of the arts .

The Northwest Washington Theatre Group also holds four performances annually . The group performs in Lynden Middle School’s Judson Hall Auditorium, named after the “mother of Lynden” Phoebe Judson .

Lynden High School also performs their productions in historic Judson Hall . In 2011 LHS will perform “Hot Rod”, a unique adaptation of the beloved play “Grease” .

In 2011 the Lynden Christian High School Drama department will perform Gershwin’s musical “Crazy for You” . The school features a 590 seat auditorium, built in 2004 . In addition to the theatrical performances, the auditorium also hosts band, orchestra, and choral concerts, as well as community events .

Parks and TrailsLynden City Park is a peaceful stop along Lynden’s

Originally the homestead of Hans and Lida Berthusen, Berthusen Park was gifted to the city of Lynden in 1944 . With covered picnic areas and a network of trails through acres of old-growth forest, the park is now the backdrop for year-round family and church gatherings .

Harold Kooy’s vision from single grocery store to entire complex

What would Lynden be without the Fairway Center?

What started out in 1960 as the daring idea of a young Harold Kooy has become, across 50 years, a pivotal piece of the Lynden economy .

Of course, Kooy didn’t visualize all that exists today . Back then, he was just opening a new store, Harold’s IGA Foodliner, on the western edge of town, offering Lynden shoppers plenty of car parking space outside and — a new concept inside the store — shopping carts!

Kooy had been a partner in the City Market downtown, where clerks still got food items down from high shelves for customers and delivery boys carted the goods home . But he foresaw a different way of doing business . It was about easy-access shopping centers giving customers plenty of free choice and flexibility .

“I was just in the transition,” says the 85-year-old today . “It was just the right time .”

He was “full of pep” then, as he puts it .And he had another big advantage: the backing

of his father-in-law, Art Oordt, who owned property in an ideal location . The first Foodliner was a conversion of the Oordt Bros . Hatchery building .

Working hard as a team, Harold and Sarah Kooy quickly proved any doubters wrong, and within five years they were ready to build a new 10,000-square-foot structure for their grocery store . That allowed other businesses to occupy the old hatchery space, and the idea of a shopping center was becoming reality .

From the start, Mr . Oordt wanted a convenient coffee shop on the west side of town . His wish was granted, and the Fairway Cafe has been a fixture at the same spot ever since .

A few other early ones were Thiessen’s Shoe Repair,

Jansen’s Floral, a dental office, Lloyd’s Electronics and Edward’s Draperies .

The growth occurred in phases . In 1971, spaces were created for 17 businesses in an L shape along Front Street and around the corner onto 17th . New arrivals included The Gent’s Den, Big Scoop, Coast to Coast Stores, Ralph’s Fairway Floors, John Kooy Realty, a Sears office, a discount center, a beauty salon and a dry cleaners/laundromat .

The final remains of chicken coops on the 10 acres disappeared as the Fairway Center continued to circle around to the back in 1973 with the addition of the larger Safeway and Sprouse-Reitz stores . A self-standing Peoples Bank branch was built at the southeast corner of the complex . By now, there were at least 20 lessees .

“All the expansion was built after leases were signed,” Kooy said, a sign of how he wanted all his deals to be solid .

Eventually, the center went full circle with the addition of a large Ennen’s Mark-N-Pak grocery and several more smaller spaces to the northwest, as 18th Street was built to access them .

He just kept growing with the demand, Kooy said .He was happy to be creating a thriving place for all

those businesses and their employees and customers, but he tried to offer advice “only if they asked me,” he said .

With so much to manage and maintain for close to 30 tenants, Kooy gave up his original Foodliner to become a JC Penney store . The comings and goings of national chain stores has presented challenges at times, but seldom is there a vacancy at the homegrown Fairway Center, even today .

Speaking of challenges, a big one occurred when a fast-spreading fire wiped out three businesses in November 1998 . Quickly, Kooy rebuilt from the rubble and had everyone back in operation .

The center has gone through several visual transformations, the major one bringing a full Dutch-front design .

The crowning piece could be considered the arrival of a Dutch-style windmill towering over Front Street in 2007 .

Byron Kooy oversees today’s operation of the


21-tenant Fairway Center, which includes the large North County Christ the King Church on the north side .

It may be tough to keep up his dad’s pace of “running a hundred miles an hour” in developing the center, but Byron sees plenty to keep him busy now in preserving the success story .

“We are blessed to have many years of success and are grateful to the community for continuing to shop locally, which helps support the family-owned businesses in the Fairway Center,” Byron said .

Many people could endorse the picture of Harold Kooy as an energetic and enthusiastic entrepreneur . Reflecting on it himself, the founder talks about what he sees as elements of retailing success, all of which were favorable in his case: location, timing, advertising, merchandising, good tenants .

He said he is thankful for it all: “The Lord has been good to us .”

He also realizes that “it’s a whole different ball game now .”

In the stairway leading up to Fairway Center’s

windmill office are many framed photos of newspaper pages chronicling the stages of Fairway Center development . “It really is something when you think about it”, Harold reminisces . “I was just doing it . It’s kind of hard to believe .”

************Dean Hendricks, with 40 years of connection

to the Fairway Center, said he has always had a good working relationship with the Kooys .

As recently as a few years ago, when Harold was past age 80, the landlord was still willing to climb up on a ladder to clear snow from the roof of his store, Hendricks said as illustration .

Owner of Ace Hardware today, Hendricks first came to Fairway working as a teenager for Jude Vander Hoek’s Coast to Coast store in 1971 . Since then, the business has gone through a location change, a name change and a co-ownership change, but it’s all happened within the confines of the Fairway Center .

Now, Ace Hardware is exactly where the new Harold’s IGA Foodliner opened in 1965 .

AgricultureIn the midst of 102,584 acres of farmland in

Whatcom County, Lynden is the center for many agricultural products and services . The shipment and processing of milk alone results in approximately 150 jobs . Several major farm equipment manufacturers and dealerships and feed and fertilizer businesses thrive here .

Nothing beats the setting at the Lynden KOA. Plus, the amenities sure are nice too.

As the Lynden KOA campground continues to pull in national awards, it is the success in drawing in repeat regional campers that keeps the 20-acre oasis within Lynden ticking .

“The biggest draw is the setting with lush green lawns, trees and landscaping,” said Ed Martin, part of the family that owns and operates the campground . “Coming out of Canada or Seattle, you feel 100 million miles away from home .”

Whether they are tent campers or motor home drivers, the Lynden KOA has options for them . The roughly 125 sites offer everything from grassy spots for tents to full water, electric and sewer hookups . There also are 12 log cabins available for rental .

While the natural environment is a major factor in drawing people, the setting also helps the Lynden KOA offer a variety of amenities to keep the campers happy .

Martin said the quiet, family-filled nature of the campground helps draw moms and dads with small children all the way up to retirees (don’t expect the rowdy 21-year-old campers here!) .

The Lynden KOA boasts a swimming pool, three small fishing ponds stocked with trout and bass, paddle boats for one of the ponds, a playground, mini-putt, a coffee shop and a general store .

During the peak summer season, a calendar of events keeps camp life hopping, with events for the kids — letting their parents go relax by the pool — or the adults .

From bingo and dancing to games and tractor rides, the Lynden KOA

caters to those making it a destination stop .

“For the type of campers we have, it really works out well,” Martin said .

With two types of campgrounds out there — the stopover, overnight campground and a destination — Lynden certainly caters as a destination, giving the campers every reason to stay on site and just relax .

The Martin family took over the campground about 33 years ago . At that time, it had been built as a campground about four years prior and was a part of the KOA system since day one .

Ed’s mom, Shirley Martin, is the head of the campground, but she shares the workload nicely among the family .

Ed and his wife Bobbie stay plenty involved . Ed’s brother, Marty Martin, and their two sisters, Vicki Lockhart and Terry Huizenga, also have key roles . Even the nieces and nephews stay busy in the summer, with one niece, in particular, Michele Bovenkamp, playing a large part .

Over the course of the peak season — Memorial Day to Labor Day — the campground will employ around 15 workers anywhere from teenagers to retirees .

The family’s attention to detail and dedication to service recently earned

the Lynden facility two coveted KOA awards, the Founders Award and the Award of Excellence .

Ed said the family really desires the excellence rating, since it is awarded based on customer satisfaction and on-site inspections .

The Lynden KOA has also been named the top Franchise of the Year, out of 500 and 550 campgrounds, in the past .

Ed said the goal is to develop repeat customers . “If you come here once, it is more than likely we will see you again,” he said .

Numerous families have been coming to the Lynden KOA since the Martins took it over .

Some of those families even hail from just a mile down the road . “It seems strange, even to us,” Ed said . But, as a kid, he remembers neighbors camping at the Lynden KOA, since it affords a parent the opportunity to attend to a farm or other responsibilities part of the day, but still have the away-from-home feeling .

The Lynden KOA season starts to pick up in March and has a progressive build-up right to the grand-daddy weekend, Labor Day . The campground usually runs at capacity during all holiday weekends and also during the week of the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden every August .

American Bicentennial Project . Housed in a historic building built in 1911, the museum immediately became a destination, thanks in part to generous donations from Lynden and Whatcom County citizens of artifacts, documents, photos, and other memories from their pioneer forefathers .

Today it encompasses a collection of 25,000 objects displayed in 5 galleries that cover over 28,000 square feet . Life-size contextual recreations of a pioneer homestead and historic business fronts provide a realistic look into the life of turn of the century Lynden and Whatcom County . Visitors can look into scenes from the past and discover the lifestyles and stories of those that built our community .

The museum also has the only regular exhibit on the development of Transportation from Horse to Horse power . Visitors and community members alike can explore the amazing Fred Polinder Buggy Collection, a collection of 49 unique horse drawn vehicles (the largest publicly displayed collection West of the Mississippi) and view an annually changing exhibit on the history of the automobile that features new vintage autos every spring .

In addition many opportunities exist at the museum that enrich the lives of locals . The museum serves as a resource center through its public archives, holds educational programs for local schools and is regularly staffed by dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers . It also offers special tours and community events throughout the year . Over 800 spectators will gather in October to witness demonstrators and historic re-enactors recreate life in Whatcom County a century past . Finally, the museum offers a cozy gift shop full of great deals and unique local items .

The Northwest Washington Fair’s focus on its rural roots hasn’t prevented the six-day event from becoming one of the biggest exhibitions in the state . Attendance at the fair topped 216,000 in 2010 .

The 2011 fair, scheduled for August 15-20, celebrates the 101st anniversary of the fair’s existence and features internationally recognized performers, “walk around” entertainers, and musicians .

The fair enjoys widespread participation from artists, quilters, and landscapers . Still, agriculture is the heart of the fair . Some of the country’s top dairies bring their cows each year to the exhibition, while majestic draft horse wagon hitches are a featured highlight of the event . Hundreds of FFA and 4-H youth fill barns with pigs, sheep, goats, chicks, rabbits, dogs, cats, and more .

The Lynden PRCA Rodeo, held the weekend following the Northwest Washington Fair, features bull riding, roping, barrel racing, and several other popular events . Reserved seating tickets go on sale annually in June .
