PECHS LIBRARY NEWSLETTER
Happy
St. Patrick’s
Day!
Thanks to all who responded to my survey about the Sustained
Silent Reading (SSR) or Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) pro-
gram. I only had three “no” responses and many “yes” (with sev-
eral encouraging messages—thank you)! Looks like we might
start this on a voluntary basis, but we will need to work out the
particulars and provide books to those teachers who want to
participate. As April is National Library Week and National
DEAR month, we will see if we can try this on a trial basis. I will
keep you posted….

COMPULSION: HEIRS OF WATSON ISLAND BY: MARTINA BOONE
GENRE: SOUTHERN GOTHIC/MYSTERY # OF PAGES: 433
I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Boone speak at the Longwood Children’s Book
Festival in October 2015, and my interest in her writing was piqued. Over the
Christmas break, I read the first book in her Heirs of Watson Island series, Com-
pulsion, and now understand all the glowing reviews this series has received.
Crafted in the Southern Gothic style, complete with a little romance and mystery
(and a touch of the paranormal), this book takes you to coastal South Carolina
where you meet Barrie Watson (who, after her mother’s death, has come to live
with her Aunt Pru), Seven and Eight Beaufort, and the mysterious Fire Carrier.
Like a true Southern Gothic, the decaying Watson mansion has a life of its own,
and the Watsons and Beauforts have family secrets that are revealed. Barrie is attracted to Eight, but
will the ancient island curse keep them apart? This is the first in a three-part young adult series!
