Employer’s Council Discusses Employee Handbooks at Monthly Meeting

Human resource practitioners, business-owners and managers from many

organizations gathered Tuesday, July 19 from 12-1 p.m. at the ISU Extension Office, 1514 Isett Avenue to discuss “Employee Handbooks: Where to Start”.

The July 19 meeting featured Linda Reedy, PHR, Human Resource Professional with MRA. Reedy gave

helpful tips and pointers for developing your own employee handbook along with enhancing and updating handbooks already in place.

Employer’s Council monthly meetings provide networking opportunities and the chance to learn about a range of human resource-related topics. Future meetings will include representatives from the Iowa Workforce Development, nationally-recognized HR training experts from MRA, local HR professionals and attorneys. Companies large and small can benefit from these sessions and are

open to any Muscatine-area employer. Membership in GMCCI is not required for attendance, though reservations will be requested for each meeting.

Lunch is provided for a suggested donation of $5. Please take note of the next meeting to be held on Tuesday, August 16, entitled “The Interview Process: How Job Descriptions Play a Part”. RSVP your attendance to Shea Eitman at GMCCI via email at [email protected] or call GMCCI at 263-8895.

Allsteel Winner of 2011 Award for Excellence in RecyclingAs a vital part of Iowa's recycling community, Allsteel has been chosen to receive a 2011 Award for Excellence in Recycling presented by Iowa Recycling Association. Today, Allsteel has created an environmentally-

aware culture that reviews product packaging, both incoming packages and those delivered to customers. This effort decreases consumption of energy, lowers costs, and reduces the harmful impact on the environment. Allsteel has been recycling steel and aluminum since their doors opened, and began recycling cardboard years ago. The company has aggressively pursued recycling, even finding buyers for their leftover fabrics. Allsteel bales and sells their fabric cuts to a manufacturer of shoddy, the foamy cushion fabric that lines the exposed parts of car trunks. In 2010, Allsteel recycled a total of 7,271 tons of material, up from 6,544 tons in 2009. This is an 11% increase from an already stellar recycler.

Beyond the far-reaching recycling fostered by City Carton Recycling, Allsteel also facilitates widespread reuse of otherwise wasted products. For example, Allsteel works with its suppliers to use returnable packaging rather than recyclable packaging. They are now utilizing wooden crates from an overseas manufacturer to use as returnable containers with other suppliers and even using these crates for sending finished goods to job sites, saving packaging materials and labor. A partnership with one of their suppliers allows Allsteel to return any Styrofoam (a nearly impossible to recycle material), which the supplier grinds up to make new Styrofoam. Allsteel also sends Styrofoam from other suppliers, like other HNI manufacturing facilities and their Corporate Headquarters, to be ground up by this company.

Additionally, nearly all plastic bags sent by suppliers are being reused for a different purpose rather than just recycled. Instead of sending barrels of waste powder paint to the landfill, Allsteel utilizes the material to paint internal parts on several product lines, reducing the waste by nearly

half. The remainder is mixed with other materials to create a saleable product. In this way, all of the powder paint is kept out of the landfill. Another instance of reuse is Allsteel’s handling of wood fiber. In 2010, Allsteel began working with one of their suppliers to take the supplier’s waste wood fiber, grinding it in their facility, and selling the product for fuel. The material had previously been sent to landfill, which means that this partnership reduced overall waste by 325 tons per year. In the same spirit of community and cooperation, Allsteel has plans to work with the Muscatine campus of HNI to reduce their landfill waste by 1000 tons over the next five years.

To recycle, the Allsteel facility utilizes colored barrels, coded by content (landfill material, plastics, paper, and cardboard, among other materials) to sort their materials. A small group of dedicated Goodwill Industries members pick up the recyclables and transport them to centralized locations. The materials are then baled or compacted and taken to City Carton Recyclers located at the Muscatine Transfer Station for recycling.

PatriART and Independence Day CelebrationsThe Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to our members and community supporters for another successful Independence Day Celebration. GMCCI coordinates PatriART’s celebrations of cultural and entertainment along with the members of our Muscatine Cultural Alliance committee. This year funding was obtained from the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine for PatriART publicity and for the Civil War Encampment at Muscatine Art Center. With these funds the Fiery Trial was also presented with the help of the

Rotary Club of Muscatine.

GMCCI is grateful to the organizations and donors that have helped make eleven days of family entertainment successful. Each year GMCCI budgets $20,000 for fireworks, event insurance, and other necessities for the events. Those hard dollars donated are put towards these events. The real value of these events are provided courtesy of GMCCI staff time and the hundreds of hours that volunteers provide managing, coordinating and synchronizing the activities during this year’s eleven days of PatriART and 4th of July celebrations.

Ribbon Cutting for New Family Foundations LocationRepresentatives from GMCCI along with the staff of Family Foundations conducted a ribbon cutting for their new location, located at 312 Iowa Avenue (lower level of MCSA Building), on Thursday, July 21.

Family Foundations of Iowa, Inc., is a Christian counseling center providing biblical truth and psycho-social insights that ministers to hurting persons and helps them move to a personal wholeness, interpersonal competence, mental stability, and spiritual maturity. The staff at Family Foundations of Iowa, Inc. strives to provide "professional services within a non-denominational Christian framework".

“When Family Foundations first came to Muscatine we could hear the need for an additional location near the downtown area. The community embraced and welcomed us and worked diligently to get us into the MCSA building. We are now here and able to help people that need our assistance.”Sandra Siemens, President, Family Foundations of Iowa, Inc.

GMCCI welcomes Family Foundations newest location and congratulates President, Sandra Siemens, and her staff on their successful opening of another location within the Muscatine community. They also serve clients from their Oakview Drive office in Muscatine along

The President’s Corner by Bill Phelen This month’s President’s Corner will cover two very important initiatives that are or will soon be underway at GMCCI, the launching of the new www.muscatine.com website and the installment of a TRC program.

Starting in mid-August GMCCI

will initiate a “soft launch” of its new website. This new website has been developed after much research and discussion with many chambers and development organizations throughout the country.

The new website, www.muscatine.com will provide GMCCI and our members with a great many services and opportunities for business promotion. The new site will concentrate on three areas; Economic Development, Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. These three areas have been selected to best enable anyone seeking information and to gain that information as quickly as possible.

The Economic Development section will allow both local and non-local business developers and property developers seeking to expand current Muscatine businesses, or anyone looking for potential locations for new businesses, to find the

necessary information needed in their decision process. It will demonstrate that Muscatine is a community of business, and is interested in growing its business base whenever possible.

The Chamber of Commerce section will provide Chamber members with events and program information, along with an easy on-line registration process. It will provide both visitors and potential new residents with a great deal of information about the community, activities and organizations within the community and how and whom to contact for more information.

The Tourism section will provide those potential visitors to our great community the information they will need about the many activities and amenities (soccer, baseball, parks, riverfront, shopping, eating and hotels) in our area, and how best they can be reached.

As I said before, we will be starting a soft launch in August, with a goal of having any and all “bugs” worked out as soon as possible. Our website will continue to grow, be enhanced, and increase in value to our members and the entire community. We know you will find it valuable.

Now, what in the world is a TRC? The acronym stands for Total Resource Campaign. The purpose for such an activity is very straight forward. GMCCI wants to make it much easier for our members, both current and potential, to

get more return on their investment in the Chamber.

A Total Resource Campaign markets sponsorships of your chamber’s programs, events, publications and electronic media, as well as recruits new members. In an organized few weeks, volunteers raise the funding for your Chamber’s programs for the entire year.

How many times have you said, “If the Chamber would only approach my business once a year, for our membership dues, our Annual Meeting and Musca-Fu-Da registrations, and the contributions that WE really want to support, it would make a lot more sense, and would allow me to put everything into my business’ annual budget?”

We have heard you, and that is exactly what we are going to do. But even better than that, we are going to create an annual program that allows your business to not only be approached on an annual basis, but the TRC program allows your business and its volunteers to have fun and win prizes while doing so.

Please watch the newsletter and our promotional emails for more information regarding both our new website and our upcoming TRC campaign.

Again, thank you for supporting GMCCI as we strive to become even better at supporting our members throughout Muscatine and the surrounding areas.

with their Kimberly Road location in Bettendorf.

CVB Busy with Summer EventsPreservation Iowa - Turning Clamshells Into Pearl Buttons

Preservation Iowa is set to hold a two-day conference in Muscatine the first weekend in August. Members of the group are planning to discuss the key issues affecting preservation at the local, state and regional level. In addition, participants will also tour West Hill, the McKee Button facility, and other historically-significant attractions, like the Pine Creek Grist Mill and the Muscatine Art Center. Organizers of the event are expecting approximately 100 participants to attend. For more information, visit PreservationIowa.org.

Muscatine Charity Bass Tournament

Avid local fishermen, Eric Bastin and Rob Stroda, have organized a charity bass fishing tournament in support of The City of Hope, an independent biomedical research and patient care center dedicated to the treatment and cures for cancer, diabetes, and other

life-threatening illnesses. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 20, with the launch at “safe light”. Event organizers are expecting 150 boats with close to 300 fisherman competing for over $12,000 in prize money. As with other fishing tournaments, it is expected that participating anglers will “pre-fish” the area, which will expand the positive financial impact of this tournament on the area. For more information, visit MuscatineCharityTournament.com, or visit Muscatine Charity Bass Tournament’s Facebook Page.

Train Festival 2011 - Wrap Up

The Muscatine CVB welcomed hundreds of guests to Muscatine’s Riverside Park on Sunday, July 24. Our visitors arrived aboard either the luxurious Celebration Belle or the vintage passenger train, an excursion offered by the organizers of Train Festival 2011. Upon disembarking, visitors were encouraged to catch a ride on the Muscabus to one of the many points in historic downtown. The Muscatine

History & Industry Center welcomed many guests during the event, allowing them to better understand the story of how Muscatine became the “Pearl Button Capital of the World”.

Other visitors chose to visit several shops downtown, or relax at Pearl City Station while listening to the band Just 4 Fun. In addition, visitors were greeted by a surprise guest, The Muscatine River Monster, who delighted the CVB’s guests with many great photo opportunities.

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

Dear Chamber Members, Leadership Muscatine is kicking-off its 24th year and we are looking for people with drive and ability who want to enhance their community leadership skills, and are interested in serving in a leadership capacity in Muscatine! Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GMCCI) and Muscatine Community College (MCC) co-sponsor Leadership Muscatine. Since its beginning in 1988, over 500 participants have graduated. A significant proportions of the class members are actively involved in improving the quality of life in Muscatine. Participation in the program requires a serious time commitment. Fourteen sessions plus a group project requires between 75 and 95 hours (over a seven-month period) to successfully complete the program. Participants, whether new to Muscatine or lifelong residents, will gain a better understanding of the many different organizations and their leaders that work to make Muscatine an exceptional community. Class members will build strong friendships with other future leaders and be challenged to get involved to make a positive impact on our community. The 2011-2012 Leadership Muscatine class will begin their experience with orientation the first part of October, and will continue with two sessions per month concluding in the Spring of 2012. Individuals from the community will be selected on the basis of meeting the following criteria:

Leadership Experience: The individual has been a leader in some capacity in Muscatine or other communities. Community References: The individual submits a minimum of two references that state why the person is a qualified candidate for Leadership Muscatine.

Tuition for the program is $450.00. Partial scholarships are also available by contacting the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine. Please help us by giving the application forms to your associates who you feel would be good candidates for this program and encourage them to apply. The deadline for applications is extended to Wednesday, September 14th. If you have any questions about this program, please call Jane Daufeldt at (563) 263-8895 or [email protected] . Thank you for your support of the Leadership Muscatine program, as we develop tomorrow’s leaders today! Sincerely, ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
