• My name is Ian Disley the Practice Manager for Chrysalis Health and Well Being Services. • With 20 years experience of delivering life skills training and performance coaching to both individuals, teams and businesses. • I have a variety of coaching and counselling qualifications and a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the Association for Coaching.

• This seminar has been designed to give team leaders, coaches, managers, supervisors and aspiring managers… • For a greater understanding of the impact of stress in the workplace and provide some skills to support staff and improve performance in the workplace….
Main aim for the seminar…
• The aim of this seminar is to help you empower those you are responsible for, by providing you some skills to ‘pass on’ to others.• Equally if we protect ourselves before distressing situations occur, we will also be more likely to manage distress when it comes our way..

Why Workplace Stress?
Some facts…..
• Work-related stress, depression or anxiety is defined as a harmful reaction people have to undue pressures and demands placed on them at work. The 2014/15 Labour Force Survey showed that in Great Britain (HSE website);• 9.9 million days were lost to work related stress in
2014/15. • stress accounted for 35% of all work related ill
health cases and 43% of all working days lost due to ill health in 2014/15
What is the impact of Workplace Stress?
• Low motivation• Lower Morale• Leads to mistakes• Lower productivity• Underperformance• Poor decision making• More pressure on remaining staff

• Increased performance and productivity• Reduced levels of sickness absence and associated costs• More engagement from your staff, better morale• Improved interpersonal working relationships• A greater ability to handle the demands of work

• Why do we wear helmets and harnesses? • Should we put the helmet on before we climb or afterwards? Why?• What if we don’t have protection?• Equally if we look after ourselves before distressing situations occur, we will be protected from workplace stress when it comes our way..

• How do you know if someone is Depressed?
– Low Moods– Unhappy– Tearful

• Don’t act immediately. Pause.
• Notice your breath as you breathe in and out.
• Imagine a balloon the belly
Take a Breath
• What are the thoughts and feelings? • What are the words that the mind is saying? • Are they facts or opinions? • What unhelpful thinking habits are being used? (e.g. mind-reading,
Observe
• See the situation as an outside observer. What would a fly on the wall see? Is there another way of looking at it? • What would someone else see and make of it? What advice would I give to someone else? • How important is it right now, and will it be in 6 months?
Pull Back: Put in some Perspective
• Do what works, what is most helpful. • Will it be effective and appropriate? • Is it in keeping with your values and principles? • What will be the consequences of the action?• What is best and most helpful for this situation?

Vision - 5 things you can see…
• Visit a museum, watch a film or documentary, go to an art gallery, share your experiences.
• Visualise a beautiful place, find a safe place in the mind.
• Encourage cycle to work programs, team walks, away days and fun days
Hearing - 4 things you can hear….
• Put on relaxing or inspiring music• Listen to sounds of nature• Pay attention to sounds around you,
wherever you are
Touch - 3 things you can touch…
• Massage your hands with lotion, stroke a beloved pet, or give someone a cuddle
• Prepare a bubble bath, wear nice clothes• Swim at the local pool or in the sea• Hold and feel a grounding object such as a
smooth pebble or crystal• Notice and pay attention to how these things
feel on your skin.
Smell/Taste - 2 things to smell or taste….
• Think about your favourite smell, spray perfume, flowers
• Use essential oils such as lavender, scented candles
• Notice the pleasing smells of the environment such as flowers, coffee, bake a cake or bread
• Eat a little of your favourite food, savour each moment, eat slowly and mindfully
• Drink soothing drink like hot chocolate or herbal tea
