ALTHOUGH the Nelson Man-dela Bay metro police waslaunched after great anticipa-tion last Friday, the municipalworkers union Samwu reck-
ons it was all just an illusion.
“The Nelson Mandela Bay metro policeare still just a name, and really just an idea
that costs a lot of money and equipment, butis without a workforce,” said Mqondisi No-dongwe, regional secretary of Samwu, afterthe opening ceremony.On the sidelines, a woman in a traffic uni-
form was shouting, “The metro police areour future, but they (the metro manage-ment) must settle with us, and stand beforeus and say what the Metro Police entails!”Nodongwe supported the woman’s out-
burst and said it was because so far there
has been no communication between work-ers and management.“Our members (that include traffic offi-
cers and officers of the safety and securitydirectorate) do not know what their newwork entails. They were simply called lastweek and handed letters of transfer (to themetro police unit).”He said that although the new jobs to
most mean a higher rank and much bettersalary, all the posts are marked as acting
positions.“Why would our members want to swap
a permanent job for an acting job?“And it is no secret that there is nomoney
or budget for operating costs of the metropolice. How will our members’ salaries bepaid? Will they all be fired from their newacting jobs when the money runs out?”asked Nodongwe.

DIE Nelson Mandelabaai-metro (NMBM)moet dringend waterbeperkings toepas.
Dié opdrag kom van die provinsiale depar-tement van water en sanitasie en geld vir ste-delike en nywerheidsgebiede.
Die NMBM het al in Maart vanjaar opdraggekry om 15% beperkings in te stel, maar hetgevra dat dit heroorweeg word.
Die departement het egter in April die me-tro se voorlegging hieroor verwerp.
Volgens die voorlegging, onderteken deurJohann Mettler, waarnemende stadsbestuur-der, het die metro se waterverbruik skerp ge-styg weens onder meer die skuif van sowat10 000 gesinne van informele na formele be-huising. Dit het glo tot ’n sewevoudige toena-
me in waterverbruik gelei.Mettler het ook onaanvaarbare hoë water-
verliese, baie hoër temperature – veral in dieafgelope ses maande – en die gebrek aan fi-nansiering wat die Nooitgedachtprojek ver-traag as faktore vir die hoë verbruik uitgelig.
Maar volgens Andrew Lucas, waarnemen-de hoof van die provinsiale departement, ver-teenwoordig die verskuiwing van die 10 000gesinne na nuwe huise slegs 4% van die stadse waterverbruik, en nie sewevoudig soosdeur die NMBM beweer word nie.
Die “baie swak verklaring” deur dieNMBM dat hulle waterbeperkings – wat al ’njaar lank agterstallig is – sal toepas, is gladnie oortuigend nie, het Lucas bygevoeg.
“Die metro het reeds die toekenning vanuithierdie damme binne die bestek van negemaande oorskry, en daar is nog ’n volle drie
maande van hierdie waterjaar oor. Dit be-dreig die bestaan van ander gebruikers, soosdie landboubedryf, wat ook afhanklik is vandie Kouga- en Mpofuskemas,” aldus Lucas.
Kupido Baron, woordvoerder van dieNMBM, het bevestig dat die metro ’n kennis-gewing ontvang het. Hy het gesê samespre-kings tussen die departement en NMBM se-nior bestuur sal vandeesweek plaasvind.
Die departement het ook gesê hy gaan dieGamtoos-besproeiingsraad versoek om geenwater uit die Kougadam na die Loeriedamvry te laat voordat die NMBM goedkeuringgekry het vir bykomende tydelike toeken-nings nie.
Pierre Joubert, hoofbestuurder van dieGamtoos-besproeiingsraad, het gesê hy hetnog nie so ’n versoek van die departementontvang nie.

DESPITE being a new mother and havingdoctors tell her that her child has a heartcondition, her instinct told her it was morethan a condition of the heart.
Ntombi Ndlovu’s daughter, Michelle Si-yanda Ndlovu (7), was diagnosed with arare condition called 22q11.2 deletion syn-drome, which is caused by the deletion ofa small piece of chromosome 22.
Michelle, who was born in Johannesburgand currently resides in Port Elizabeth,was six months old when she was diag-nosed with this rare condition.
“We noticed when she was 5 days old thather breathing wasn’t normal. We took herback to the hospital and were told that shehas a heart problem and needs to undergoan open heart operation.
“It was very frustrating not to knowwhat was wrong with my daughter. Weknew it was something with the heart butshe was only diagnosed when she was sixmonths,” said Ntombi.
She added that her daughter’s conditionis very rare and many doctors are notaware of it, which is why she is holding anevent on May 22, with the intention of in-forming others about 22q11.2 deletion syn-drome. The awareness event is also to ac-knowledge 22q at the Zoo WorldwideAwareness Day, which also takes place onMay 22, where 22q families worldwide cele-brate a fun-filled awareness day at the zoo.
“22q11.2 deletion syndrome causes manymedical problems such as heart defects,cleft palate, low calcium, thyroid, seizures,feeding difficulties, developmental delay,learning disability, weak immune system,chronic constipation, hearing loss, spineproblems, etc.
“There is no cure for 22q11.2 deletion syn-drome; there are only ways to manage theproblems it causes like a heart operation
and several medications,” she said.Ntombi added that while the condition is
rare, it could actually be more commonthan many think because some people withthe condition have few signs and symp-toms.
“It’s very sad and frustrating for me asa parent that doctors, nurses and othermedical professionals do not know aboutthis syndrome which is so prevalent amongkids. Every time I take my daughter to thehospital I have to tell the doctors about hersyndrome. I have learnt to educate myselfmore about my daughter’s condition.”
“It’s a long and rough road, but we thankGod for her. She’s an adorable loving childand she has made me a better and strongerperson. We may spend most of our time atdoctors’ appointments and face challengesbut she is worth every moment.”
Ntombi said she has been interactingwith international hospitals about herdaughter’s condition.
“I’ve been communicating with GeneticsAssistants at The Children’s Hospital ofPhiladelphia in the USA. They have beensending me information about 22q11.2 dele-tion syndrome.
“In 2011 we organised an awareness dayin Kimberley. It was the first time SouthAfrica joined other countries raisingawareness of this nature.
“We relocated to PE last year, and I stillhave the same passion to launch the aware-ness campaign here in PE.”
Ntombi added that she is inviting all par-ents of children with genetic disorders,community members and professionalswith special interests to join her on May22.
“My goal is to create awareness amongthe community, spread awareness about22q11.2 deletion syndrome, to create an op-portunity for parents of children with ge-netic disorders to meet each other and de-velop support relationships.”
“We also welcome parents who have chil-dren with disabilities. They don’t have tobe ashamed or scared that the communitywill judge them. This is my way of puttingtogether a support group. Their child mayhave a different condition but the challen-ges are still the same.”
The awareness event on May 22 will beheld at Holmeleigh Farmyard from 10am to12:30pm. Entrance is free and a light lunchwill be served.

JAMES Reid (Team Spur) and Mariske Strauss(Novus OMX Pro Team) displayed their athlet-ic dominance when they raced against some ofthe country’s top mountain bike enthusiasts atSettlers Park Nature Reserve in the fourthround of the Stihl 2016 SA XCO Cup Series inPort Elizabeth on Saturday, May 14.
Riders faced 4,2km laps with an elevation of170m, suiting those with the strongest legs onthe day.
With lots of climbing and a technical rocksection called “Boulder Bash” that tested theskills of many, the track gave the contendersone last chance to score valuable points in thisOlympic year.
Elite Women’s Winner, Mariske Strauss,who had led the bunch from the beginning,said, “It was a crazy track, but an awesometrack. We need more of these in South Africa.There aren’t many tracks like these with asteep technical section – it’s great preparationfor racing in Europe,” she said.
Elite Men’s winner, Reid, also led the chargefrom the get-go. “What a race out there – superchallenging,” he said.
“The back story to this race was that AlanHatherly (Kargo Pro MTB Team), Philip Buys(Scott Factory Racing powered by LCB) andmyself are fighting for Olympic spots. So fromthe gun the three of us really fed it to each other– it really was no holds barred.”
The Junior competition, which formed part
of the UCI Junior World Series, saw Tim Meierand Danielle Strydom take top honours in theMen’s and Women’s races respectively.
