ODETTE KEMP

Daar is baie aartappels be-mark.

“Vanaf Januarie tot April vanjaar is 5,67 mil-joen10 kg-sakkiesminder, of 17%minder, opdienasionale varsproduktemarkte verkoop as indie ooreenstemmende tydperk verlede jaar.

“Markpryse was gevolglik 93% hoër vir hier-die tydperk.

Tenopsigtevandie2016-bemarkingsjaarword

A HOLIDAY visit to a high-end visu-al effects company in New York ledto a dream job offer in Chicago forPort Elizabeth graphic designer,Udesh Chetty.

While on holiday in New York Citya couple of years ago, Chetty visitedhis then future company’s office indowntown Manhattan where he metsome heads of department and dis-cussed work opportunities.

A few months later, he received aphone call from their office in Chica-go, offering him a job.

Chetty is now the visual effects su-pervisor at Chicago’s The Mill, oneof the biggest post-production hous-es in the world.

Since completing his BTech inGraphic Design at Nelson MandelaMetropolitan University in 2003,Chetty has worked primarily on tele-vision commercials as a visual ef-fects artist and supervisor.

In 2014, he won a craft gold LoerieAward for his visual effects work onPrudential’s “South Pole” TV com-mercial directed by Velocity Films –it was the only visual effects craftgold awarded that year.

The prestigious Loerie awards arepresented annually to honour the fin-est brand communications special-ists across Africa and the MiddleEast, in fields including video, digitalmedia, design and advertising.

Chetty’s accolade made his reloca-tion process and the transition into

his new job at The Mill much easier.“Besides having work published

and having won internationallyrecognized awards in my visual ef-fects work, having a BTech degreewas also helpful,” said Chetty.

NMMU lecturer and head of theApplied Design department, MikeSwanepoel, said he remembers Chet-

ty, who received a mark of 100% forhis BTech practical portfolio, as a dil-igent and talented student.

“He was a talented illustrator andthis served him well in constructingcharacters and scenes within the 3Denvironment,” he said.

Swanepoel continued to expresshow proud he is of Chetty’s success.

“It is always rewarding as lectur-ers to see our students succeed, espe-cially on an international stage.”

Before moving to Chicago, Chettyworked as a graphic designer andmotion graphics artist at SearleStreetPostProduction inCapeTown.

Some of his work includes the Jeep‘4x4ever’ TV commercial, Alfa Ro-meo’s ‘If emotion made a car’ com-mercial, and the Cadillac Escalade‘The Herd’ TV commercial.

Chetty creates digital pop art, ex-ploring visual parodies and narra-tives through illustration, 3D render-ing, and photo manipulation. He doesthis using among other apps, Auto-desk Flame, a software applicationwhich allows artists to manipulatedigital film footage.

When asked to advise those hopingto make it in the industry, he saidnewbies in the industry needed tospend more time dedicated to theirart.

“A vocation in the arts, like anyother field, requires a lot of time, ded-ication and passion in order to attainyour goals. Constantly learning andcreating inyour spare timedefinitelygives you the edge in a professionalenvironment,” he said.

The new Chair forms part ofthe South African Research Chair Ini-tiative (SARChI), established by theDepartmentofScienceandTechnology(DST) inpartnershipwiththeNationalResearchFoundation (NRF). It is joint-ly funded by the NRF and the UK’sNewton Fund.Oceanographer Prof Mike Roberts,

whospent 26yearsworkingasa seniorresearcher in the Department of Envi-ronmental Affairs’ Oceans and Coastsdivision, is the incumbent of the newChair, which is being formallylaunched at the 2016GoingGlobal con-ference in Cape Town.NMMUDeputyVice-Chancellor: Re-

search and Engagement Prof AndrewLeitch – who gave a talk at the confer-ence on how this Chair fits intoNMMU’s marine and maritime agen-da, one of the major flagship focuspoints of the University – said, “This isthe first jointChairbetween theUnitedKingdom and South Africa. We areproudtobepartneringwiththeUniver-sity of Southampton and the NOC,which are both top ranked as theworld’s premier research institutes inmarine and ocean science. NMMU hasmarine research expertise going backmore than 30 years in our Institute forCoastal andMarine Research, and thislong track record will support the

Chair’s establishment.”NMMUis involved ineachof thevar-

iousWorking Groups defined by Oper-ationPhakisa todevelopSouthAfrica’sBlueEconomy–theChairwillalsoplaya key role in Operation Phakisa, withits focus on marine food security andaquaculture. NMMU also hosts theSouth African International MaritimeInstitute (SAIMI).The launchof theChairwasattended

by Science and Technology MinisterNaledi Pandor and the British High

Commissioner, Dame Judith Macgre-gor.As part of the Chair’s research plan,

Roberts, who will equally divide histimebetweenNMMU,theUniversityofSouthampton and the NOC, will focuson developing the Western IndianOceans Upwelling Research Initiative(WIOURI) a flagship project of theUNESCO International Indian OceanExpedition 2 (IIOE2), which waslaunched in December 2015.“Upwelling is the process that takes

nutrients from the bottom of the oceanandbrings them to the surface.”Essen-tially, this processprovides food for thebottom end of the food chain – phyto-plankton, zoo plankton, and so on –which ultimately provides food for fishand top predators. How this links with food security is

that, in parallel with global climatechange, theocean’supwellingsystemischanging, which will affect all levels ofthe food chain.“The Western Indian Ocean [which

stretches fromCape Town toOman] isunique in that there are around 2-bil-lion people living on islands who de-pend on artisanal fishing [small traderather than commercial fishing] fortheir livelihoods.”Changes in the ocean will directly

impact on their livelihood.A large part of the Chair’s workwill

be collecting data using high-tech in-struments and creating ocean modelsfrom this data.Roberts said the Eastern Indian

Oceans Upwelling Research Initiative(EIOURI), supported by Australia, In-dia andChina, waswell developed, butlittle research had yet been conductedthrough WIOURI.He said the linkwith the University

of Southampton created an “innova-tion bridge” between Southampton’sworld-class facilitiesandSouthAfrica, which was ideally positioned to con-duct WIOURI research. On May 11, several postgraduate

NMMU students will be leaving forSouthampton University, to “acquireskills not available in South Africa”.“By dropping these students into a

world class facility, we are immediate-ly creating a centre of excellence atNMMU.”Roberts said NMMU’s first research

trip, to collect data offMadagascar, willtake place in November.

AFTER witnessing first-hand the effects ofsevere family trauma, Rene van Tonder, who is a mother of three, decided to opena school where she could assist pupils withacademic demands while working throughthe emotional trauma they have experi-enced.

Newly opened Grey Park Academy is sit-uated in Walmer and caters for learnersfrom Grade 1 to 12.The school’s aim is to assist children who

have experienced some form of trauma, incoping with not only that trauma, but theacademic demands that have to be met, ir-respective of the emotional impact.Van Tonder, who studied a B.Ed with psy-

chologymajors, said the reason she decidedto start Grey Park Academy was due to herfamily experiencing the emotional impactof having to deal with loss.“In 2014, my husband was diagnosed with

terminal cancer. The doctors gave him 3 to6 months to live. My son was in Grade 11

and my youngest daughter in Grade 3. Myeldest daughter was 20.“The impact of such a diagnosis is inde-

scribably hard to put in words. The bottomliterally drops out of your world and youare floated into an alien world of despair, anger, hopelessness – a distraughtness ofunimaginable proportions hits you,” vanTonder said.“Each family member tries to cope in

their own way. The pillar of our household, the one who could have carried us throughany trauma, became the trauma and wefloundered in our abnormal worlds whiletrying to be as normal as possible. Wepacked up house and moved to PE.“February 2015, my husband passed

away. Our devastation was complete andwe were hit with a new set of emotions. Myson was in matric. When I surfaced frommy daze in September, I realized that therecord exams were 2 weeks away. My sonfell into a very dark depression and it fellto me to get up at three in the morning, learn his work and teach it to him. By thegrace of God alone, he passed matric,” she

said.Van Tonder added that her experience

made her realise that no matter what lifethrows at pupils, they are expected to beokay, to pull through on the academicswhich are compulsory at least until the ageof 16.She mentioned that parents may be fight-

ing their own emotional battle after a di-vorce or death and not necessarily be in aposition to support their child emotionally.“No matter how you look at it, the child

needs to cope with the trauma and some-how pull through on academics. It is my de-sire to not only assist children who havewalked a cancer path or lost a parent, orany trauma – rape, abuse, divorce, alcohol-ism. The emotional trauma is the same.“The outcome can have detrimental ef-

fects on a child. And if they fail a year be-cause of a system that is just rotating onits daily axis and leaving them behind, thechild is set up for even further problems,”she said. The environment at Grey Park Academy

ensures that the pupil is able to learn what

is required on an academic level. Emotion-al support, understanding and any otherprofessional help are provided as well.“I offer the child as well as the parents

a support structure to lean on. I have en-countered a few sad stories as I have mar-keted myself at the schools and psycholo-gists – there is a definitive need for the typeof service I am offering,” van Tonder added.Grey Park Academy classes are kept

small and offer personal attention. Theschool is passionate about assisting eachpupil to achieve their full potential despitewhat life throws at them. The school has normal hours from 8am

to 1:30pm. Parents are kept informed abouttheir child’s progress and are encouragedto be involved in their children’s educa-tion.Post matric students who need to im-

prove their results or change direction incareer and require to take on a new subject, are also accommodated. For more info about Grey Park Academy,

ROUND four of the Stihl 2016 SA XCOCup Series takes place this year at Set-tlers’ Park in Port Elizabeth on Satur-day, May 14.

Eastern Cape Bike Mountain BikeCommissioner, Charl Joubert, said,“Although it will be very much thesame as last year’s track, there are a fewchanges and new instalments, includ-ing a brand new rock garden.”

The upgraded course has 4.2-kilome-tre laps and an elevation of 170 metres.Joubert also mentioned that the courseis very different to the other XCO Na-tional Cup tracks. “In the Baakens Val-ley, there is plenty of beautiful vegeta-tion surrounding the trails, and not toomuch dust,” he added.

“It won’t be as technically challeng-

ing as the 2015 PE XCO track; howeverit will still be technical. There is a lotof climbing involved though, and thiswill definitely require a lot of poweringdown and a lot of strength. It’s definite-ly going to suit the stronger riders,”said Joubert.

Although the UCI Category 1 ratingapplies to Pro-Elites only, the Juniorswill be able to earn series points, as wellas UCI points for their own UCI JuniorWorld Series at some of the Cup Seriesevents.

Entries have closed but late entrieswill be accepted at registration, with anominal charge of R50 in addition to theentry fee.

Despite rare condition, Tianté (2) is rayof sunshineZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL

HER condition is taxing and taking care of heris a daily challenge, but she is never seen as aburden to her loving family.

Little Tianté Scott (2) of Bloemendal has beendiagnosed with Rett Syndrome - a genetic post-natalneurologicaldisordersorare thatsheisbe-lieved to be only the 18th person diagnosed inthe country, and possibly the only one in PortElizabeth.

Rett Syndrome’s most prominent features in-clude small hands and feet, repetitive wringingof the hands and or putting hands into themouth.

Sufferers also typically have symptoms suchas gastrointestinal problems, breathing difficul-ties and seizures. They are also unable to talkand rarely are able to walk.

Tianté,who is in thecareofhergrandparents,Marlene and Roland Scott, while her motherKim works during the day, was diagnosed inSeptember2015afterabrainscanandbloodtestswere done. Before this confirmation, the familythought that the toddler was just slow in reach-ing her milestones because she had been bornprematurely.

“She was a normal baby until she was a yearand two months old. She played with toys andenjoyedbeing inherwalkingring. After that shestarted falling behind in reaching milestonesand refused to touchanything.Thenwerealizedsomethingwasverywrong, andtookher for test-ing,” explained Marlene.

to eat anything besides soft baby foods and can-not hold her own bottle.

“She also has a sleeping disorder - whichmeans she can be wide awake in the middle ofthe night or not be able to sleep at all. We haveto watch her the whole time because when shetries to crawl, she will bump into things. Shedoesn’t like touching toys and theonly thing sheis interested in is watching movies. Then she isat her happiest,” explained Marlene.

Marlene and Roland have nothing but praisefortheneurodepartmentoftheDoraNginzahos-pital,where theyhave to spenda lot of timewithTianté.

“Sometimes it’s hard because when she startscrying she is unable to stop for hours - shedoesn’t like being out of her comfort zone. Butthe staff are always friendly and understand-ing,” said Roland.

Marlene and Tianté will be going to the RedCross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town in Au-gust for a check-up. At this visit Tianté mightreceive a special standing framewhichwill helpto keep her in an upright position, and helpstraighten her legs.

“Shortly after Tianté was diagnosed last year, her mother and I went with her to Red Crosswhere they assessed Tianté and also providedcounselling, where they told us there is nothingthat canbedone to cureher condition. Basicallytheonly thingwecando is tomake sure that sheis comfortable,” said Marlene.

It was very difficult for the family to hear andaccept that their babygirl could either reach theage of 30 or 40, or possibly die at any moment.

“It’s tough...but what can we do? This child isablessing tous andweare still grateful, becausethere are people out there with much biggerproblems than ours. We love her so much andwe still give thanks toGod andwe take eachdayas it comes.”

‘AS the Koekie Crumbles’ and‘Careful’ will be staged from May18 to 22, at The Little Theatre.

These two adult-content,thought-provoking plays werepenned by the late Fiona Coyne, afamiliar face on SATV as TheWeakest Link presenter.Coyne’s works have been per-

formed worldwide and these twocomedy gems incorporate hu-mour, pathos and brilliant insightinto human relationships. Thispromises to be an evening of good, solidentertainment inthetheatre.‘As the Koekie Crumbles’ is tra-

ditionally a one-woman show andin this instance, the five roles willbe in the very capable hands ofNiqui Cloete-Barrass, who movesjust as easily frombeingoneof thetop cabaret performers in the city,to straight roles on the PEMADSstage. She is well remembered forher outstanding performance inanother one-woman show, Shirl-ey Valentine.‘As the Koekie Crumbles’ is set

in Kenya, with some very recog-nisable, fun characters, whocouldhave stepped straight out ofWhite Mischief or Out of Africaand into the late 80’s in Kenya.‘Careful’ was the final play

penned by Fiona Coyne and waswritten for the Dublin Gay Festi-val, where Roy Sargeant’s out-standing production, starring Di-ane Wilson, received great criti-cal acclaim and was nominatedfor twoawards. Itwentontoenjoy

very successful runs in South Af-rica.‘Careful’ follows the developing

and, at times acerbic, relationshipbetween an ageing actress and agay theatre critic. These two roleswill be played by stalwarts, Yolan-de Farrow and Caren Bestbier. Both productions will be direct-

ed by Linda-Louise Swain, mov-ing from her successful onstagetheatrical career at PEMADS, tothe directorial seat.Tickets cost R60 and will be on

sale through Computicket. Theshows run from May 18 to 20 at7:30pm and on May 21 to 22 at2:30pm.PEMADS patrons may book

their seats at theOperaHouseout-let ofComputicket, if theyproducetheir membership card. Ticketswill also be on sale at the LittleTheatre box office prior to eachperformance.A cash barwill be available and

AT a time where South Africa is facingdamagingeffectsofdroughtonfoodpri-ces,ever-greater levelsof foodinsecuri-ty as a result of inflation and increasesto cost of living due to rising petrolcosts, theissueofhungrychildrenisin-evitably set to rise.

Research carried out by the Univer-sity of Stellenbosch Nutritional Infor-mationCentre (NICUS)has shown that inSouth Africa, one in five children do nothave breakfast every day.

Children who attend their lessons hungry, lack attentiveness to their school work and asa result, find the process of learning new workextremely difficult.

“Afteranightof fasting, breakfast is requiredto topupglucose stores for thedayahead. In ad-dition to providing energy, breakfast helps achild tomeet theirdailynutrient requirements.Optimal functioning and performance requireadequate nutrition,” said Kelly Francis, regis-tered dietician, on behalf of Kellogg’s Breakfastfor Better Days™ Initiative.

Many households do not always have accessto breakfast andmany children are forced to gowithout.Asaresult, thesechildrenaredeficientin the vital vitamins and minerals needed forhealthy growth, and the energy required to dotheir best in their studies or for physical activi-ties. For this reason, Kellogg’s has collaboratedwith the Department of Basic Education on animportantcommunitydrivenhungerreliefpro-gramme, the Kellogg’s Breakfast for BetterDays™ initiative which makes sure that chil-drenattendingschoolstart theirdayswithafullstomach.

TRADITIONALLY the first European race of theF1 season sees a raft of updatesmade to the cars.It’snodifferentin2016,asteamslooktotakeacru-cial step forward at Spain’s Circuit deCatalunya.

Red Bull Racing dropped the bombshell a fewdays after the Russian Grand Prix that DannilKvyat and Max Verstappen would swop seats.

Ostensibly, the move appears to have beenmade following Kvyat’s attempt at playingbumper carswithSebastianVettel inRussia butthere’s a fair bit more at play than that.Forone,RussiandriverKvyathasn’tbeenthat

impressive in theRedBull alongsideDaniel Ric-ciardo. Then, there’s that incident with the Fer-rari in Russia. However, neither of these twothings is enough to warrant a demotion to thejunior team. Drivers go through indifferentpatches and make mistakes but they aren’tdropped at the first sign of strife, usually.

RomainGrosjean’s troublesome season at Lo-tus and Pastor Maldonado’s F1 career are testa-ment to the fact that teams usually stick it out.But not in Kvyat’s case.

The incident in Russia is nothing more thananexcuse topromoteVerstappen fromToroRos-so into the senior team. While the teenagedDutch driver may be singing Red Bull’s praisesand swearing that he’s never looked elsewherefor a drive, we know better.

It’s only his second F1 season, but it’s obviousthat Verstappen has big potential. This makeshimahotcommodity forother teamsandthere’snobetterwaytokeephimclosethantomovehimto the senior team. Well played Red Bull.Whatadifference12monthscanmake. In 2015

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg arrived at the SpanishGPunder pressure. This time aroundhe arrivesat the fifth round of the season with four race

wins under the belt and a dominant lead overteammate Lewis Hamilton in the standings.Nowthequestionshifts from“CanNicodoit?”

to “Can he keep doing it?” The German is con-vinced thatHamiltonwill hit back soonandhe’slikely right. However, it’s also a great mentalspace for Rosberg to operate in - take it one raceandonelapatatimeanddon’t takeit forgranted.Besides a bit of brooding on the Russian GP

podium, Hamilton has appeared decidedlychilled, evenapathetic, to his dreadful run so farin 2016. But don’t be fooled by his supposedly in-different approach. The reigning champ morethanhas the skill to hit backhard and just needsto find the sweet-spot for it to be unleashed. From the Ferrari garage the hope is that the

performance deficit in the last race was specificto thecircuit. It could’vebeengiven that theRus-sian circuit is power dominant. But though theymay be closer in Spain it will extremely toughto beat the Silver Arrows around Catalunya.McLaren, already vastly improved in 2016, is

planning to introduce a significant upgrade totheir car this weekend. They hope that a newfloor, wings, and bits of other bodywork will beenoughtopropel theminto the top ten inqualify-ing and a solid points score with both cars. The Haas F1 Teamwill run the upgraded Fer-

rari engine, introduced in Russia, in Spain. TheRenault team will run an updated version oftheir front andrearwings in thehopesofuppingtheir game in a tight mid-field battle.Seven drivers on the current grid have won

the Spanish GP and thanks to its status as a testvenue everyone knows his way around theseparts.Butas familiaras theyarewiththeCircuitdeCatalunya it doesn’t do anything to lessen thechallenge.

NOT ONLY did the Sharks produce easilytheir best performance of the season by beat-ing the Hurricanes 32-15 at Kings Park lastweekend – but demonstrated, too, that theyhave two of South Africa’s best flyhalves intothe bargain.

There really is very little to choose betweenthese twovery fineNo. 10s. They arePatLam-bie, finally back from injury and looking asgood as ever – even if only in a secondary rolethatmust have reminded theNewZealandershowmuchrespecthedeserves.Theother,nat-urally, is Garth April, who has been holdingdown, with great efficiency, the Sharks fly-half role with surprising aplomb. We know all about Lambie and his rapid

rise to the top echelon of our halfback talent– this 25-year-old established Springbok whohas shown class ever since leaving Michael-house School in the KZN Midlands. April isa surprise package: a 23-year-oldwho just lastyear was as yet undiscovered and playingclub rugby in the Eastern Cape.

What a country this is for flyhalf talent. Intime these two could set up a rivalry such asthat between Dawie de Villiers and the mer-curial Jannie Barnard setting the South Afri-can rugby world alight with their rivalry. Then along came the Diggers darling, GeraldBosch.

So to the Lambie and April rivalry. Howwill they fare in thebattle for flyhalf suprema-cy ahead? Here’s a thought: perhaps theywon’t need to. Keith Oxlee, until he estab-lishedhimself as “supremo”had toworkhardto reach and maintain his position as the No.1. Lambie strikes one as a member of the Ox-leekind–anallroundplayerof of the topeche-

lon: amaster distributor, an excellent and ac-curate goal and touchline kicker, a defenderalways tobe countedon. Seemingly,April hasall these gifts, too – in abundance. The twomight evenbeplayed together;April at centreand Lambie, a player who strikes one as theslightly more astute, at No. 10. As the sayinggoes, bothplayershave it – that special ability– “in spades”. Time will tell.Whatever the future holds for the Sharks:

includingbothwithApril at centre,AndreEs-terhuizen or Paul Jordaan, preferably the lat-ter, could be retained and “benched”. Thingsthen would certainly be looking up for theSharks, perhaps even the Springboks. To return to theKings Park game; themeri-

torious defeat inflicted on the Hurricanes –not generally expected, it should be noted –has shifted the Sharks to eighth place on theoverall log after 10 matches, directly behindthe Bulls in sixth place and the Lions in sev-enth, both from nine matches. Until halftimeit was 8-all, JP Pietersen, with his first try, bringing to scores toparity. Itwasnosurprisewhen the ever-alert Pietersen pickedup a sec-ond try (andMan of theMatch) as the Sharksbegan to take control in a secondhalf that pro-duced some fine rugby – the Hurricanes try-ing desperately to play catch-up, but to noavail against a KZN side playing their bestrugby of the season. Here at home thePEKings, doing their best

to play catch-up, found themselves oncemoreon thereceivingendof 34-18defeat at five triesto two. In an often ragged game the Kingscould simply not stay the pace and after lead-ing at halftime it was mostly downhill for thehome side.

FORD released its new Ranger at the end oflast year, just a fewmonths before theFebrua-ry launch of one of its biggest competitors, theToyota Hilux.

And the competition is stiff, with the Ran-ger baggingmany prestige local awards in re-cent months, while the Hilux topped the salesin March and April.

Ford’s Ranger and Everest were recentlyannounced as winners in the 2016 Drive Out/WegRy 4x4 of the Year Awards. In theseawards the New Ford Ranger was announcedDouble Cab of the Year with the all-new FordEverest taking top award for the SUV seg-ment.This follows close on theheels of theRanger

beingnamed one ofCarMagazine’sBest Buysfor 2016 winning the best double cab bakkietitle for a fifth year in a row.

The generous size of the Ranger’s cabin, high specification level, refinement and ridecomfort, as well as the rugged looks and per-formance, were all praised by the Car editori-al team. You justhave to goonanyschool run, rugby

or festival day and just see how many doublecabs are parked there in themiddle of the con-crete jungle.

It’s used on the school run, office run, forholidays and has become the family car formany.

And toaccommodate thosewho like todriveabakkie, without feeling that they are drivinga bakkie, the new Ranger is laden with com-fort and convenience features, not tomentionthe fact that the test model had an automatictransmission – making up for what I believethe worst thing about driving a bakkie is –changing those gears.

And then there is the rear camera – which(in my opinion) should be compulsory for allbakkies used on the school run.The refreshed line-up of Rangers, which

have been available in SA since Novemberlast year, comprises 33 models including Sin-

gle Cab, Super Cab, Double Cab andWildtrak. The new Ranger is produced at Ford’s Sil-

vertonAssemblyPlant inPretoriaandexport-ed to 148 markets in Africa and Europe. TheDuratorq TDCi engines are manufactured atthe Struandale Engine Plant in PE.

ExteriorThe new design gives the Ranger a bolder,

more sophisticated appearance and the testmodel was the double cab variety. For those who like to drive on the wildside

the Ranger has 800mm water wading depthand 230mm of ground clearance.

InteriorFord has gone to a lot of trouble with high

tech features, suchas theFordSync2 infotain-ment system with an eight-inch touchscreen(on thehigher specmodels) to create a car likeinterior and make you forget you are sittinginside a bakkie.SYNC®2, the latest generation of Ford’s in-

car connectivity system, is standard on thenew Ranger XLT andWildtrak models. Usingnatural voice commands, the driver can con-trol the car’s climate controls, entertainmentsystem and phone functions. The new Ranger also features a 240-volt

power socket that can be used to power yourlaptop or cellphone. The Ranger line-up features Electronic Sta-

bilityProgram(ESP)andABSasstandard fea-tures on all but the Base model (where ABSis an option). In addition, the top-specification new Ran-

ger Wildtrak offers a wide range of first-in-class driver aids including Lane KeepingAlert and Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive CruiseControl with Forward Alert, Tyre PressureMonitoring System, Driver ImpairmentMon-itor, as well as Front and Rear Park Assist. The Wildtrak can be specified in 3.2 TDCi

4x2 manual or automatic, or the range-top-ping 4x4 Automatic.

EngineThe Ranger range is powered by the latest-

generation Duratorq TDCi engine and Durat-ec petrol engine.Ford engineers fine-tuned the suspension

of the new version for additional comfort andbetter handling.

One of the other ways of taking the bakkieout of a bakkie for the way it is used thesedays, the Ranger has an electric power-assist-ed steering (EPAS) system. This allows forlight and manageable steering for low-speedmanoeuvring – very useful in shopping cen-tre parking lots and tight spaces on the schoolrun –while out on the open road andat higherspeed the EPAS ensures precise steering.

Ford’s 3.2-litreDuratorqTDCi five-cylinderdiesel engine tops the range. According toFord, the upgrades include a new exhaust gasrecirculation system that helps improve fuelefficiency by up to 18 percent, while still pro-ducing 147kW of power and 470Nm of torque.

The 2.2-litre four-cylinder Duratorq TDCihas also been upgraded for better perform-ance and efficiency. The peak outputs of thehigh-power derivative climb from 110kW onthe previous model, to 118kW while torque isboosted by 10Nm to 385Nm.

An economical mid-power 2.2 DuratorqTDCi engine is also available in certain mod-els, producing 88kW and 285Nm.

The new Ranger is also available withFord’s 2.5-litre Duratec petrol engine, provid-ing 122kW of power and 226Nm of torque.

Depending on model derivative, the newRanger is equipped with a six-speed manualor automatic transmission, or a five-speedmanual on the mid-output diesel and petrolversions.

The prices for the New Ranger double cabs range fromR290 900 to R597 900. The vehicle test driven wasthe 3.2 TDCi XLT 4X4 Automatic which retails forR567 900.

Will I buy a Ranger if I could afford it?I still prefer SUV’s so I would rather go for the 7seaterFord Everest which is the SUV version of the Ranger. But if it has to be a bakkie, then the Ranger is definitelyloaded with high tech, comfort and convenience featureswhich will make yousoon forget that it is a bakkie andthat you will sometimes have to sacrifice tight parkingspaces.
