Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We are far more dependent than we like to think. We think of ourselves as individualistic, independent, and self-sufficient. But in reality, we are not! For car trouble, we go to a mechanic. For legal problems, we go to a lawyer. For physical problems, we go to a doctor. But where do we go when our hearts are broken, when our minds are confused, when our spirits are low? To whom can we go but Christ the Lord!!! We see the power of words to change the course of history in our first reading from Joshua 24:1-2, 15-17,

18, when Joshua spoke to the children of Israel. He put before them a choice: “Decide today whom you will serve. But for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” That challenge brought the people to their knees in service to the Lord God. In our Gospel from John 6:60-69, Jesus spoke of himself as the Living Bread, which offended many of his followers. All this talk about Living Bread that comes down from heaven was a little bit too much for some of his followers. From that time on, many of his disciples broke away. But some stayed. There was no other place or person to go for the words of eternal life.

We are so desperate for answers, that any answer is better the NO answer at all. People seem to hang on to absurdities for fear of the emptiness and silence of not knowing. But Christians have found an answer in Jesus Christ that holds strong against doubts and the heart’s heaviest grief. Jesus has the words of life because he is the Word of God. Blessings, Fr. Ray

Living Stewardship Now What are you doing to be an example of Christ to your family, friends, fellow

parishioners and people in your community? Are you walking the walk or just talking the talk?

August 26, Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests time, talent and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something! May we be mindful of God’s gifts to us and renew our commitment to serve Him with grateful hearts. We are blessed to have many, many ways for parishioners to share our gifts with others while serving the Lord with grateful hearts. Today, you have a Ministry Directory in your pew or at the 4 entrances to the Church. You will note that our ministries fall under one of the four pillars listed below.

Where will you chose to serve the Lord? Hospitality Prayer Sharing Teaching

Blanket Buddies – Sept 15 distribution Greetings all Blanket Buddies! It’s that time of year to share our handiwork with those in need before the weather turns cold. The distribution will take place on Saturday, September 15, from 8:30

AM until 1:00 PM (or until the last agency has collected their blankets, whichever comes first). We’ll meet in the Multipurpose room to count, bag, and distribute what we’ve collected. I’ll provide donuts and coffee. Please bring your blankets to the parish office or church sacristy and mark them with “Blanket Buddies.” Anyone can donate: new blankets of any size, yarn, fabric for quilting, time, or money for new blankets. We’ll make good use of everything we receive! Pick up a brochure in the main vestibules of the church for more information.

Blessings to each of you! Olga

FOOD FOR FRIENDS SUNDAY NEXT COLLECTION:

WEEKEND OF August 25th-26th

Thank you, again, St. Joan of Arc Parishioners, for your continued generosity and support of Food for Friends. Your abundant donations provide physical, emotional and spiritual nourishment to many people throughout the area by way of the seven charitable organizations that we support. St. Joan’s parishioners make an extraordinary difference in their lives! 201 bags of groceries were donated in the July collection. Our recipients are very grateful!

Suggestion lists are attached to the bag, indicating special needs for the month, such as cereal, canned goods, flour, corn meal, peanut butter, oil, pasta, and soups, along with other items suitable for school lunches. Grocery store gift cards or cash donations are also welcome.

May the Lord continually pour out His blessings on you for your generosity to Food for Friends!
