The biblical exam- ples of the importance of fellowship and Christian care and community are numerous. Jesus wasn’t a lone crusader: he gathered the group of 12 disciples around him, and there are many references to a larger community of followers that was part of his ministry. Fellowship was an important part of the early church, and the challenges of maintaining that sense of fellowship and community were a frequent theme in Paul’s letters. Practically, Meeting House members frequently reflect on the challenges of making and building connections within our congregation. We work, live, attend schools, and play all over the DC area, meaning that our lives don’t often overlap outside Sunday morning. In this high turnover area, we are constantly welcoming new members and saying good-bye to old. Some people are better than others at striking up conversa- tions with “strangers.” And with many people pulled in many different directions, we often don’t give the time needed to cultivate relationships within this community. But those connections and relationships are vital as we undertake this journey of faith. We need fellow travelers to support us, to challenge us, to bring new insights, and to encourage us to keep the faith. Not every encounter with another Meeting House member will be a deep and profound moment of faith, but we become a stronger community of faith together as we build and strengthen these relationships. As we settle into this new year, we encourage you to take steps to strengthen your connection with this congregation and the people who compose it. Church NewsWelcome Additions! As most folks reading this will know, Ann and her husband Terry are about to welcome a new addition totheir home. Sometime around President’s Day a childwill be born and, while they won’t be laying the child ina manger, I am sure she will be properly adored. Whoknows, there may even be choirs of “angels” to help leadthe celebration.

Additions like this require some adjustment time so Annwill be taking three months maternity leave beginning inmid-February. After that, she plans to reduce her workload at the Meeting House to 60% to give her greaterflexibility as she takes on the new demands of mother-hood. As Ann scales back her hours, ensuring that theneeds of the Meeting House continue to be met willrequire an addition to the Meeting House staff.

I am pleased to announce thatthat addition will be someone wealready know and love – LindaLanam. As many of you alreadyknow, Linda is a retired corporateattorney and a recent honor grad-uate from Virginia TheologicalSeminary, where she serves as ateaching assistant in OldTestament and manages theirWriting Center. Linda is a formermoderator of our Board ofDeacons and she is currently amember of the Session serving onthe Worship Ministry. She hasalso served the Meeting House asa liturgist and lay reader and by helping to plan and execute our summer evening worship services. We arecalling her position “Pastoral Assistant.” She will be aprimary resource person for the Board of Deacons andshare in the other pastoral work of the church as needed.Fortunately for us, Linda has agreed to do this for asmall stipend paid for by the savings brought about byAnn’s reduced work load. This is a non-ordained positionresponsible to the Session through the PersonnelCommittee. Dr. Joyce Mercer, Professor of PracticalTheology at VTS, will continue to serve as our part-time Parish Associate for Older Adult Ministry. Her primary work is in the area of visitation with anemphasis on our home-bound members.

I hope you will join me in welcoming these wonderfuladditions to the Meeting House family!Rocky

Lent Begins February 22The liturgical season of Lent is a 40-day period of peni-tence and reflection beginning on Ash Wednesday andending with Easter. Sundays falling within this period arenot counted as part of Lent. In medieval times, the rulesof Lent were severe: strict fasting was required and onlyone meal a day could be eaten; marriages could not becelebrated; and dancing and entertainment were forbid-den too. After the Reformation, observing Lent as a mat-ter of personal piety persisted in milder forms. TodayLent is a time of self-examination and preparation forEaster. It is a time to draw closer to God through scripture reading and prayer. You are invited to a LentenPilgrimage as you prepare for the gift and miracle ofEaster. You will find (on the church’s website) links toLenten devotional literature. Also available are a limitednumber of copies of “A Lenten Pilgrimage”, a collectionof devotions written by Ruth Huizenga Everhart. Theyare available for purchase in the church office ($2.00).

Lent begins with an Ash Wednesday service to be held inthe sanctuary at 7 pm on February 22. Dinner will beavailable in Fellowship Hall, $10/adults; $5/ages 5-12;$30 maximum/family. Reservations for dinner arerequired by noon Monday, February 20.

Middle SchoolSki Retreat 2012!On Saturday January 14,2012 a group of 16 middleschool youth and 4 adultsgathered in the MeetingHouse parking lot andheaded for Harrisonburg, VA for the annual ski retreat. It was a wonderfulweekend filled with fun and fellowship. We stayed two nights in WilsonCottage at Massanetta Springs Conference Center, just a 20 minute drivefrom great skiing at Massanutten Resort. The youth, with a little help fromthe adults! – prepared all their own meals…including pizza with freshdough! The theme of the weekend was “Lost and Found”. Our discussionsand Bibly study Saturday night and Sunday morning focused around theparables of the lost sheep and coin. We talked about how God loves each oneof us even when we stray and the importance of seeking relationship withGod throughout our lives. With the help of David Pratt’s guitar playing, wehad some quality singing time throughout the week as well. After a time ofprayer and worship, we of course saved time for skiing all day on Sundayand had a lot of fun and games throughout the retreat. Children’s Ministry

In Heritage Hall…Creeds and ConfessionsFebruary 5 is the conclusion of the class with MadelineJervis.

Who’s Who in the Burying Ground? February 12There are some 300 individuals interred in theChurchyard Burying Ground at the Old PresbyterianMeeting House (OPMH). Among them are severalwho played important roles in the early history ofAlexandria. Hugh Van Horn will share their stories. He will also offer a brief history of the ChurchyardBurying Ground itself and sketch current efforts to pre-serve it. Hugh chairs the Meeting House History andArchives Committee and is a member of the Committeefor the Churchyard Burying Ground.

The Church in the Middle AgesFebruary 19, 26, March 4, and 11Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor, cap-tured the church and put a lock on the use of the mind. With state protection the church took on the form ofthe state with bishops, and a pope, assuming authorityto tell believers what to believe and not to believe. ButMuhammad appeared and took another view of God.The church split into East and West creating theEastern Orthodox Church. The Renaissance reintro-duced rational thinking and the Reformation.

This class is led by Dr. William Phillippe, honorablyretired Teaching Elder.

In Fellowship Hall…Sunday Morning Bible StudyOn Feb. 12, we will begin an 11-week class (throughApril 29) on “The Psalms: Prayers, Praise and Poetry.”The class will meet in Fellowship Hall from 9:40 to10:40 am. For centuries, the Psalms have been essentialto the life of the church, e.g., in worship, prayer andmeditation. How do these ancient poems speak to us asChristians today? We will use the study book Psalms byJerome F.D. Creach, part of the Interpretation BibleStudies series published by PCUSA Westminster JohnKnox Press. The books will be available in the class for$10. Senior Pastor Rocky Laha will lead the first class.Linda Lanam, Lee Posey, Tom Roberts and HalCollums will rotate leading the other classes.

In Westminster Hall…What’s A Presbyterian? Continues February 5, 12, & 19. Two sessions willexamine worship and sacraments and Presbyterianchurch governance. The final session focuses on the lifeand work of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, andthere will be an opportunity for those who would liketo join the church to do so.

Adult Education

The JourneyThe next rotation of workshops in The Journey willexplore the story of The Good Samaritan. The GoodSamaritan is perhaps the most touching parable thatJesus ever taught. The story begins with the lawyer’strick question, “What is the greatest commandment?”As Jesus answers with a story, he teaches us to love andserve one another no matter how we differ in appear-ance and beliefs. Workshop choices will include Art,Service and Games. The rotation will begin on Sunday,February 5, with all the children in grades 1-5 gatheringin Fellowship Hall for a movie to introduce the story.

The events will vary in sizeand will include Big Participation Days like ServiceSunday, On Ramp Events that give you a chance to takepart in one of our recurring volunteer opportunities andsee if it is a good fit. Information Sessions about partic-ular issues, and Planning Sessions where you can helpshape our mission work. Many of our Mission Connectevents will have a local focus, but we will also haveactivities with a regional, national and global focus. While many of our events are appropriate for age 12and older, we will also offer intergenerational events andactivities for families and younger children. We hope that this “connectional” approach to missionwork will help Meeting House members and friends getto know each other better while doing good work in ourcommunity. The current list of upcoming events forFebruary and March appears below (additional eventsmay be added).
